“Today we witnessed a landmark event in the history of Iraq: Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced to death by the Iraqi High Tribunal,” Mr. Bush said…“Saddam Hussein’s trial is a milestone in the Iraqi people’s efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law.”
—NY Times
…There have frequently been developments in Iraq over the past two years that Mr. Bush has proclaimed as turning points, only to see them followed by renewed violence and further deterioration.
And while these announcements of Iraqi milestones have at times produced a lift for Mr. Bush in the polls, the gains have tended to be fleeting.
George’s war against Iraq has more milestones that a cat has lives. How ’bout when we whupped the Eye-rakis’ asses from here to kingdom come. You called that Mission Accomplished. Or how ’bout capturing Saddam to begin with? That was supposed to be a major milestone, wasn’t it? Or how ’bout killing Zarqawi? We were really turning a corner over that one, weren’t we? I think instead of ‘milestones,’ you should call them millstones because that’s what all this breathy, chest-pounding does for your political reputation. It just adds another millstone round your neck because each milestone/landmark event brings you no closer to the end of this disastrous occupation.
