  1. The poll shows that Israelis want new negotiations with the Palestinians. I’m afraid that the precious time will be wasted and a new wave of terror attacks will come around.
The problem with a unity government is that Hamas still refuses to recognize Israel. The Israeli public will not be in favor of negotiating with such a government. It would also be hard for me. As long as they don’t recognize Israel, Olmert can rest assure. He can continue doing nothing in that field.
A recognition of Isreal by Hamas can lead to a demand for new talks. Till then, nothing.

    Anyway,

    Shana Tova !

I can understand their hesitation & yours in trusting such a Palestinian government as a partner in such negotiations. But 45% of your fellow countryment ARE willing to negotiate with a nationa unity government that includes Hamas. Perhaps you are among the 43% who would not.

And I would point out to you something that many Israeli commentators have mentioned: that Israel did not compel the PLO to recognize Israel BEFORE it began negotiating w. it in Oslo in the 1990s. That recognition came as a result of the negotiations, but was not a precondition. Why should Hamas be held to a diff. standard than Fatah was?

But we do have to wait to see how things turn out. Abbas promises that the government will recognize Israel & Hamas says it won’t. Abbas has so far bested them in political manuvering & may do so again & carry out his promise.

  3. I heard on the radio news a few hrs. ago that Abbas said while visiting Egypt that the negotiations for the national unity government “are back to zero.” Apparently, Hamas has really cooked their own goose by repudiating the agreement it signed w. Abbas to form the new coalition.

I don’t see what choice Hamas ultimately has. Either they accede to Abbas eventually & bite the bullet or he calls new elections & Fatah comes back to power.
