Dick Cheney–meet John Edwards. The meeting that never was. (credit: AP/C-SPAN/Yahoo!News)
Dick Cheney has problems. We all know about the bad heart. But we didn’t find out about the fading memory until he prevaricated his way through the recent vice presidential debate. In Meeting Was Not First for Cheney, Edwards, the New York Times reveals his seriously impaired grasp of past events by noting that the two met not once, not twice, but at least three times in the past three years.
Here’s the lying lie from the liar who told it at the debate:
I am the president of Senate, the presiding officer. I’m up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they’re in session. The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight.”
Whoa, hold on there Mr. VP. What about the Senate prayer breakfast in 2001 where you not only sat next to Edwards, thanked him by name in your remarks to the audience and were photographed smiling flanked by Edwards and none other than your boss, George Bush? Or how about the time when Edwards accompanied Elizabeth Dole to her swearing in ceremony as a new U.S. senator from North Carolina over which you presided? Or how about the time that Tim Russert says (on the Wednesday Today Show) you met during a taping of Meet the Press? By the way, Today Show and Meet the Press staff–couldn’t you at least provide a link to Russert’s actual remarks so that bloggers can link to them?
You know, if it was a single instance I’d give Cheney the benefit of the doubt and say he misspoke. But when you produce a record like this it just shows that Cheney and his fellow frauds don’t give a crap about the truth. For them, reality is a set of events to be molded to their particular political needs and ideological perspective.
We find further proof of this in the lame response from the Bush-Cheney campaign:
“Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt described the prayer breakfast photo as evidence of an “inconsequential meeting.”
—Concord Monitor
I didn’t hear Cheney say he’d never met Edwards at a “consequential” meeting. I heard him say he’d never met Edwards period.
Republicans, get your facts straight ’cause if you keep slippin’ and slidin’ through the truth like this, the facts (like this one) are gonna jump up and bite you in the ass!
