If Denny Hastert doesn’t resign before Election Day, he certainly won’t be Speaker of the House after the election. No Republican will. So Hastert is history whichever way he turns.
Even the Washington Times called for him to resign. You know when your own lieutenants like Tom Reynolds and John Boehner start pointing fingers at you that your days are numbered. Looks like the rats are looking for a scapegoat before they jump off the sinking ship. And Hastert’s it.
Do I hear the word ‘denial?’
In regard to calls for Mr. Hastert’s resignation, Mr. [Vin] Weber said, “The president is not going to toss overboard a guy who has been a good, faithful ally of his.”
Wanna bet?
Of course, all the Republican leaders are hypocrites because they all knew about the incident. When you’re a senior leader of the Party merely reporting such a potentially damaging incident to your boss is simply not enough. That’s why you’re a leader. You’re supposed to go beyond, to think things through, to anticipate potential problems and address them before they become problems. If I were a Repubican Congressman I’d want to throw the whole passel of ’em out with the trash. Get new blood not tainted by Abramoff or Foley. Of course, they won’t do that. The tried and the true trumps the unknown every time. Well, you get what you vote for and Republicans will get the leadership they deserve by voting for the tainted and the war horses.
