  1. What can I say? It’s a heartbreaker. To the Arab side, it’s “see? They kill us for the sport of it.”

I just hope that some Israeli veterans of this war will have a change of heart from witnessing so much mindless destruction.

I don’t know how Lebanon is going to forgive Israel after this war. There were many in Lebanon before July 12 who were ready for peace, open doors. THere had been many more in the 90s, but Israel’s actions over the last ten years in Lebanon (Qana ’96, bombing the Beirut power station and killing 7 firefighters who tried to put out the flames, etc.) had reduced the number of people willing to be friends.

Maybe if Israel tried to help rebuild what she broke? Spent money on hospitals and new roads and schools, instead of bombs? Ah me, just a pipe dream.

Laila, Laila, you’re far too kind-hearted a person when you attribute such humanity & fellow-feeling to Israel. Look how much “rebuilding” Israel has engaged in in Gaza.

But your idea is actually interesting in terms of a lawsuit by Lebanon before the International Court of Justice in which it seeks reparations fr. Israel for the death & destruction. I think such a suit would be a brilliant stroke. I’m fairly certain nothing like this has been done before. But international law is expanding its scope day by day & this type of legal theory, if it prevailed in a case, could be a significant deterrent force for Israel & other military powers (like the U.S.?) contemplating the destruction of an enemy country.

Since Israel’s political leadership often emanates from the IDF, who knows, perhaps the next Yitzchak Rabin is now fighting off Hezbollah anti-tank rockets in south Lebanon & thinking what an utter waste the whole mess is. Perhaps that person will take their place one day as the leader with the vision to remove Israel from this entire mess it’s gotten itself into w. its neighbors. That’s my pipe dream I guess.
