If you’re like me, you’re starting to wonder why the California Recall is looking more and more like the 2000 Bush-Gore race in Florida.
Republicans realized that they’d lose the 2000 presidential election unless Bush could “win” Florida by hook or by crook. And he won it thanks to a pliant Supreme Court. In California, Republicans lost the last gubernatorial race big time. But they must’ve figured that since they could steal a presidential race, why not try to steal a governor’s seat as well; and the most powerful governor’s seat in the nation, at that.
I mistakenly thought that if Bush won and didn’t govern from the center that he would find Congress and the American people up in arms and the nation would be ungovernable. Thanks to some political skill and the extraordinary assistance of Muslim terrorists, Bush has proven me wrong. He governs from the far right, but somehow manages to pull the rest of the nation along with him.
But I think that if Arnold wins in California he will not have the same luck. I do not believe he has the same political skills or instincts as George Bush. Any Republican who wins the Recall will find a sullen, recalcitrant Legislature, both of whose Houses are Democratically-controlled. California will be ungovernable until the next regularly scheduled election, which the Democrats will win if they put forward a credible candidate without the name Davis.
