Recently, Bibi Netanyahu designated one of the most controversial and extremist ex-military figures as the Shin Bet chief. David Zini was an IDF general before he was cashiered, drummed out of the military for serving as a conduit to the prime minister for secret consultations with Netanyahu and insubordination. He is by far the most extremist intelligence chief ever to serve in this role…and you can imagine how extreme previous figures have been. He has publicly espoused political views radical even by the standards of the IDF:
…”The judicial system is a dictatorship that controls the entire country”)…Former Shin Bet chiefs “got confused” when they considered themselves as bound by law because they “are first and foremost subordinate to the prime minister”). Zini also praises religious extremism (“Messianism is not a dirty word”) and opposes ending the war in the Gaza Strip based on that same messianic worldview (“This is an eternal war”)…Zini’s statements “make it clear that military service is a tool for realizing a messianic worldview…”
Here’s another bit of chilling Judeo-Taliban rhetoric delivered at a memorial ceremony for fallen soldiers. These are the words of a stone-cold killer steeped in apocalyptic mania:
“We must remember that our enemies are the enemies of the Holy One, blessed be he, and our defenders are his defenders, and any attempt to separate the two is tied to the afflictions of exile.”
Zini has never served in an intelligence role. He has little or no experience in any of the fields of Shin Bet operation: counter-intelligence, Jewish terrorism, etc. In fact, his only qualification is his undying devotion to one person: Bibi Netanyahu. If Bibi is Israel’s Hitler, Zini is its Hermann Goering. If Bibi is Israel’s Trump, Zini is its Stephen Miller. The alter ego of the boss, always attentive to the sound of his master’s voice.
Ironically, Netanyahu considered him for the role of his chief military attache, but rejected him because he was “too messianic.” Which is ironic considering that the prime minister has made his bed with Israel’s most violent messianist political parties.
Here in the US, we have seen the destruction wrought by a dictator and his willing enablers. We’ve known of and experienced Trump himself in his first term. But the toadies of his second term are orders of magnitude worse than their predecessors: willing to execute citizens in cold blood, incite insurrection against a duly-elected government, and dismantle wide swaths of the government. Zini is eager to serve the same role on Netanyahu’s behalf.
We can expect several developments from his tenure: the dismantling of the unit investigating settler terrorism, avid support for settler violence, including the ethnic cleansing of wide swaths of the Palestinian West Bank. The elimination of any vestige of Palestinian existence. The gradual encirclement and compression of Palestinian existence into a few pockets like Ramallah. He will also collaborate closely with police minister, Itamar Ben Gvir in these missions.
The Shin Bet will become part of the criminal apparatus. Already steeped in torture and thuggery masquerading as fighting terrorism, it will become the Israeli Gestapo: an intelligence operation targeting even internal enemies such as anti-Netanyahu Jews.
A former top Likud MK applauded Zini’s appointment with a chilling prediction:
“[With]…Zini [as] head of the Shin Bet, the agency will turn into a secret police force [that will go after] the [anti-government protesters] on Tel Aviv’s Kaplan Street and all other forces of destruction. The party would be over.”
Brother’s arrest for smuggling under gag order
Tikun Olam can now report, in defiance of a Shin Bet gag order (prohibiting Israeli media from reporting the story) that Zini’s brother, Bezalel, is under investigation for smuggling “forbidden goods” from Israel into Gaza.” UPDATE: The gag has been lifted. Zini is charged with smuggling cigarettes into Gaza. How ironic that the brother of the messianist genocidal Shin Bet chief, is a petty thief. These are dual use materials that could have a military use for Palestinians. He founded a vigilante terror group operating in Gaza whose goal is to complete the destruction of the few houses, buildings and infrastructure not already toppled by the IDF:
A particularly salient group is the “Uriah Force.” It consists of 10-15 heavy equipment operators, no different from other such groups. But this one has been in Gaza for…almost a year, and operates in changing settings, most recently in Khan Yunis. A name repeatedly mentioned in this context is Bezalel Zini, the brother of the person slated to be the next Shin Bet chief, Maj. Gen. (res.) David Zini.
The militia’s name is unintentionally ironic, as Uriah was a soldier sent to certain death in battle by King David. That in turn enabled him to take the warrior’s wife, Bathsheba, as his own wife.
It’s not clear whether the smuggling charges against Zini relate to the construction equipment he brought into Gaza; or whether it involved something of a more criminal nature.

Zini recruited “volunteers” largely composed of violent settlers, and procured heavy construction equipment to bulldoze these structures:
These people are mobilized on social media, mainly from settlements, with some of them well known as extremist right-wing settlers…A senior officer [said] there were soldiers and civilians who looked like the so-called “hilltop youth.” The entire purpose of this group was “to destroy Gaza…”
The IDF is aware of the problematic nature of the work of the Uriah Force. It’s in effect made a arrangement of convenience:
“The problem with the Uriah Force is that they aren’t necessarily people with experience in this kind of work. They don’t belong to any framework, and, in many cases, it’s like having a Falangist militia running around. We’re familiar with this situation and understand that it’s wrong, but everyone prefers to ignore it.”
The current phase of the war in Gaza has largely been privatized by contractors hired to do the engineering work formerly done by the IDF. Ill-equipped division commanders who need this work done, turn to the private contractors to do it for them. Thus, there is a tacit understanding and unofficial collaboration between them. However, this situation is complicated even further by lax security, which has led to the killing of a bulldozer operator by a Palestinian fighter.
Zini’s militia employs a notorious practice of forcing Palestinians to be human shields:
…The Uriah Force has employed…the “platform procedure”…that’s…prohibited by international laws of war.“It involves putting protective gear on a Palestinian and sending him into a tunnel that has just been exposed, to see if there’s anything there,” said this source. This includes explosive charges, terrorists or anything else that could endanger lives.
The gag order has been lifted this evening.
The indictment will be in a day or two, the press onlr mentions ciggarette smuggling – but suggests it was sold to hamas to resell and thus there may be a charge of helping the enemy at war time – which carries a possible life sentence
Zini is a nasty piece of work by any standards. And as you said, for him to be worse than the others in the Netanyahu government (or maybe I should say “politburo”) is something of an achievement – albeit of the most ignoble and repugnant kind. And while I’m not one to espouse “bad seed” theories, there certainly seems to be something awful about the toxic environment in which he and his brother were brought up that one should be corrupt and evil in the political sphere while his brother is motivated by financial gain. I wonder if the brother is helping local vigilantes or just selling to the hgihest bidder. Either way he’s rotten to the core. Reddit and Quora seem to have exploded with criticism of these vile men.
