Brit Tzedek v’Shalom–Jewish Alliance for Justice and Peace has created a striking and powerful initiative calling for the Bush Administration to encourage Israeli settlers to abandon their West Bank and Gaza settlements and return to residences within the Green Line. Such a policy would not only reinforce our stated commitment to restrict settlement expansion, it would help roll back Palestinian resentment at continued Israeli settlement incursion within or near Palestinian population centers, a cause of enormous hatred between the two peoples. Witness Hebron’s Jewish quarter, where 400 settlers live behind walls and barbed wire, protected by thousands of Israeli troops and surrounded by tens of thousands of Hebron Palestinians who hate them.
The Call, as the initiative is named advises the U.S. government to end any financial support for the Israeli government that aids, either directly or indirectly, Israeli efforts to expand or maintain settlements. It calls for such monies to be redirected to resettle Israelis from the Territories to homes within the Green Line.
