   Considering where Bibi’s coming from, it’s not a shock. I suppose the US could try to pressure him to the point where his coalition collapses and new elections are forced, but that would take time, and as time goes on, it drains the credibility out of any particular set of negotiations (particularly if continued land invasions by Israeli settlers are on-going).

   If so, that’s definitely a winning formula. Keep the Palestinian land you’ve stolen from them and on top of that not offer even inferior Israeli land in the Negev in exchange. This is really a new low in chutzpah, but certainly shouldn’t surprise us coming from this government.

   That is a new low. Next he’ll be asking for “breathing space” in the form of land set aside for Israeli settlement while negotiations are on-going.

   Israel has day after day a more “creative” legislative system. State won’t prosecute officers filmed beating Palestinians. “Mild” slapping and humiliating is now blessed by the Israeli court. Well it is if the victims are Arabs and slapped by Jews. With high certainty not vice versa.

   If Israel makes the Gaza probe will they find enough brave inspectors and judges to make a real inquiry. Certainly everybody in Israel understands after the Goldstein report’s reception that if something really negative is found the team will encounter an extremely hostile reaction. Also the Israeli government and army have already so many times said that nothing criminal happened so that contrary findings would put the Israeli “system” in an impossible position. At this stage nothing aggravating can be allowed to be found. If nothing is found nobody outside Israel will take the probe seriously.

   The US will no doubt back Israel’s efforts at self-exonerations and trumpet them as “honest” and “courageous.” Baloney. This is just another avenue by which Irael will escape being held accountable for its crimes, and the abysmal treatment of the Palestinian people will continue to be administered by “the most moral army in the world.”

   If only they had the courage and the honesty to take an honest look at themselves and conduct the kind of investigation the UN has directed them to perform. But we could only hope for that if Israel was truly interested in peace; they want only to maintain the status quo, which involves the undying insistence that the world perceive them as “defending themselves” as they continue to murder and abuse Palestinians.

     Probably true. Of course we aren’t doing such a good job investigating our own war crimes either. But I actually think the liberal press in the US is harder on our own country than it is on Israel–I’d expect the NYT editorial page to give its stamp of approval to any coat of whitewash Israel applies to itself, whereas that isn’t necessarily the case on the torture scandal.
