  1. Putin didn’t cobble together anything. The lunatic fringe was always there.

The government of Israel has to do what’s in Israel’s best interest, which is to keep Iran out of Syria and Lebanon. If that means soft peddling Russian aggression, than so be it. Maybe if Iran vacated Lebanon and Syria, the same way Israel vacated the Sinai, South Lebanon and Gaza, than the government of Israel wouldn’t be forced to cozy up to dictators.

“The one who tells the stories rules the world”. Hopi proverb

    1. @ Shelly: Ah, but you think the “lunatic fringe” refers to the global right and left. But in Israel’s case it refers to much of its politics, governed by messianists, Judeo-fascists, and Arab haters. If that ain’t a lunatic fringe, I don’t know what is.

Yours is is a perfect example of cynical Israeli realpolitik, in which moral considerations have no part. While the rest of the world integrates such considerations (albeit in piecemeal fashion) into its foreign policy, Israel not only ignores them, but disdains them.

BTW, Iran will vacate Lebanon and Syria when Israel vacates the Golan Heights, frees the Occupied Territories and stops attacking Syria. You don’t get something for nothing. A cynical “realist” should understand that. But then again, Israel may be cynical, but is sure ain’t a realist.

      1. @Richard

the “lunatic fringe” refers to the global right and left. But in Israel’s case it refers to much of its politics, governed by messianists, Judeo-fascists, and Arab haters.”

A little over a year ago, the United States was governed by the lunatic fringe, or, have you forgotten.

Cynical, Richard, is Iran fighting Israel over Palestinians rights, while rolling around in bed with the genocidal and anti-Muslim Chinese Communist party.

“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”

      2. “…Iran will vacate Lebanon and Syria when Israel etc…”
And this information you received from… ???

        1. @ Eli Gal: Actually, Iran adheres scrupulously to international agreements it signs including JCPOA. It is Israel which treats such agreements as toilet paper to be used only when necessary or convenient. So if Israel agreed to withdrawal and non-intervention Iran would certainly follow suit. Keep in mind the rise of Hezbollah and Iran’s role in Lebanon only happened AFTER Israel’s invasion of Southern Lebanon. No invasion, no Hezbollah. Hence the quickest way to get Iran out of Lebanon and Syria is for Israel to get outa Dodge. Stop invading Lebanon and Gaza, return the Golan and stop bombing Syria.

          1. Richard says:

Iran adheres scrupulously to international agreements it signs including JCPOA

            ROFL.
            Are you joking?

The International Court of Justice(ICJ) has recognized the validity of the 1955 Treaty of Amity in cases involving Iran and the U.S., even after the 1979 Iranian revolution.

In the first post-revolution case, decided in 1980 at the height of the hostage crisis (United States Diplomatic and Consular Staff in Tehran, the United States invoked the 1955 Treaty of Amity against Iran.
The United States successfully argued that Iran, which did not show up for the proceedings, violated its obligations under the Treaty of Amity by failing to protect U.S. diplomatic and consular staff, as well as other U.S. nationals kidnapped during the Iranian revolution.

And BTW, Richard, why is Iran so concerned with the Palestinian’s
rights to self-determination, while disregarding the rights to self-determination of Kurds and Baluchis?

“When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.” – Cherokee

          2. @Shelly: You answered & rebutted your own claim. When a party refuses to accept jurisdiction in a case, a default judgment is meaningless & does not constitute any sort of “agreement.” Thus Iran never agreed to anything in your case.

However, Iran scrupulously adhered to JCPOA protocols even after Trump abandoned the agreement the US had signed.

As for Iran’s approach to its own ethnic minorities, pure Whataboutism. Iran’s treatment of its minorities is not the subject of this blog. Not to mention if we were to grant that your nonsense was valid, Iran would have every right to demand that Israel treat its own minority Palestinian citizens equally instead of as a lower class of human.

Stay on topic and do not distract attention from the subject of the post & blog in general. No further comments in this thread.

        1. @ Dan Lev: You’re regurgitating another commenter who published the same garbage at almost the same time. Is this tag-team hasbara? Direct your hasbara handlers to clarify who’s posting which propaganda here so you don’t repeat yourself.

As I said to him, the subject of this post and this blog is not Iranian minorities. The subject is Israel’s relations (or lack thereof) with the world, including its regional neighbors.

Concerning Syria and the Kurds: “give their land back?” I didn’t realize there was an independent Kurdistan whose lands Syria conquered (as Israel conquered Syrian land). So you want Syria to return land that is, and has always been Syrian, back to a non-existent Kurdistan? BTW, the Kurds’ main enemy in Syria is not Syria, but Turkey.

Iran or Syria owe Israel nothing concerning its treatment of its own citizens. Israel on the other hand has much to answer for in terms of invading its foreign neighbors & violating their sovereignty thousands of time. I’d worry more about that than your red-herring claims about Syria or Iran.

Take my warning about staying on topic and not repeating claims of other hasbara commenters, seriously. No further comments in this thread.

  2. RE: “Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine has made for some strange bedfellows. Say what you will about the Russian dictator, he’s accomplished something remarkable, uniting what I’ll call the anti-imperialist left and the Trumpist right in an alliance, which has upset the calculus of American politics.” ~ R. S.

MY COMMENT: This is quite true, but I nevertheless think Victoria “F##k the EU” Nuland deserves some of the credit.

  3. As somebody who has long opposed our government installing and supporting right-wing fascist dictatorships around the world, getting involved in all these wars and spending trillions of dollars on a bloated military budget, I stand against what Putin is doing in Ukraine. Having said that, it seems to me that there are some lefties(not very many) who see Putin as some kind of socialist or communist or from that tradition. Putin is no socialist or communist. He is simply a brutal fascist thug. And besides, communism never really existed in any country including the former Soviet Union. What they had there was STATE CAPITALISM. Communism as envisioned by Karl Marx was to be an economic system in which everything was to be owned by everybody. No private property or businesses, as everybody would have ownership. And so as I have long opposed what our government has been doing around the world, I stand against what Putin does.

  4. Israel lost its moral compass long ago. Keeping open the festering sore of the Palestinian occupation forces Israel to further compromise decency and morality, not being able to take a strong stand and offer needed aid to Ukrainians including the many Jews there. Israel is so compromised and rabid about Iran.

Zelensky: “I expected greater support from Prime Minister [Naftali] Bennett,” he said at a press conference.
“I saw a nice picture of Jews wrapped in [Ukrainian] flags by the Western Wall,” said Zelensky, who is Jewish. “They prayed for us, and I thank them for it. Our relations with the Israeli leadership are not bad, but they are being tested in a time of need. I did not feel that the Israeli prime minister is wrapped in our flag.”

  5. “When a party refuses to accept jurisdiction in a case, a default judgment is meaningless & does not constitute any sort of “agreement.”

    Gobbledygook.

Iran is an original signatory to the International Court of Justice and there is compulsory jurisdiction. Iran could not have raised a ‘lack of jurisdiction’ defense.

  6. Ukraine has officially filed a lawsuit against the Russian Federation in the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this on Twitter, Ukrinform reports.

“Ukraine has submitted its application against Russia to the ICJ. Russia must be held accountable for manipulating the notion of genocide to justify aggression,” Zelensky said.

He called on the court to order Russia to cease military activity now and expect trials to start next week.

    1. Apologies, I was not being Islamophobic. Somebody above mentioned that Electronic Intifada owner Abunima was backing Putin.
Here is a Pakistani media lamenting this very fact

https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/937614-losing-the-muslim-world-to-putinLosing the Muslim World to PutinPutin is no friend to Muslims, or to the Global South. But the Western liberal order that he is competing with may still come in second in a popularity contest against him
      and this:

      1. @ Pooja: You are using the same IP address which another commenter named “Priya” used here. You probably post on so many sites for your troll mill you can’t keep your identity straight. This is inauthentic behavior. It violates my comment rules. You are now banned.

I always check sources offered by islamophobes (and Hasbarists) like you. You either don’t read the sources you use; or misread them as you did here. You omitted this from the sub-title of the article:

Putin is no friend to Muslims…

        ‘Nuff said.

        I was not being Islamophobic.

Sure you were. You are an Islamophobe whether you admit it or not. And a Hindutva to boot. Hater of Muslims. Shame on you.
