  1. You feign surprise (or if not you’re incredibly naive) that any government could use universities and establishment of higher learning as recruitment grounds. Indeed, Oxford and Cambridge universities in England were once the stomping ground for the KGB to recruit their agents if you refer to the Philby debacle. This is hardly surprising stop-press news for anybody.

      1. Then you display a particularly naïve and sanguine lack of awareness of how security services work. חג שמח

        1. @ Gefilte: And you’re the big intelligence expert. Expertise you learned how? And from whom?

No, I’m afraid it’s you who falsely seeks to conflate Israeli secret police with intelligence agencies in democratic states. It’s is certainly true that the CIA, NSA, GCHQ and other intelligence agencies engage in egregious violations of individual rights. But on nothing like the scale of Israeli spooks. And I know quite well how intelligence agencies work on both sides

      2. Israel uses the academy to further the conflict as it yeald huge profits for many ex-generals. Killing and torture of Palestinians is just a side issue.

      3. ‘@Gefilte: Nonsense. MI6 didn’t have as job fair at Cambridge to recruit spies publically.’

Ahem. Gefilte was implying the KGB held job fairs at Cambridge.

        1. @ Colin:

Gefilte was implying the KGB held job fairs at Cambridge.

Now that’s a thought: why not CIA job fairs in Moscow, FSB job fairs in Washington, Shabak job fairs in Ramallah. The more the merrier.

  2. I think a critical point is that surely most prospective university graduates in Israel are quite aware of what the Shin Bet does — torture, ‘extra-judicial killings,’ blackmail. For Shin Bet to then publically appear and solicit recruits is to implicitly assert that all these things are fine.

Of course, such behavior has happened in democracies as well — but usually in response to events. CIA recruits don’t join the agency intending to pursue a career torturing people — post 9/11, it certainly happened, but that at least hopefully wasn’t what John Q. Agent had in mind when he signed up in 1983. To cite another example, some may recall the scene in ‘Battle of Algiers’ where the French paratroop colonel outlines precisely how his unit is going to combat the insurgency. One shot shows a young officer swallowing uneasily as he realizes just what he is going to be called upon to do.

I doubt if that’s what he had in mind when he enlisted — and this is what I see as a significant moral difference here. The Israeli recruits must be perfectly aware of what they’re signing up for.
