  1. Hi Richard,
Not only is the simplistic image of China as a villain problematic, it ignores China’s vulnerabilities. In other words, the seemingly unending rise to power has an Achilles heel.
If you have seen those pictures of vast cities being built -without occupants- you might wonder if a real estate crash is on the horizon. Unwavering support for North Korea from generations past has created an inextricable problem for the current leadership. Xinjiang’s Uighur issue may yet explode. Ad nauseam, etc.
We do not like to teach the nuances of history or politics in American schools, preferring to leave this to the phony curriculum of “American exceptionalism.”
Demagogues like Bannon rise to the fore, and the only emotional salve is to wave the flag.

  2. Poor Richard, I do not think you really understand what Bannon is saying. China is a rising power and it will become a major player in the future. Not just that but the US must adjust its policies towards China accordingly. I do not think that Bannon is calling for war with China but that the US should recognize that China is a major player. My take is that it is time for the US to just step aside and let China be China (that is their destiny). In the meantime it is time for the US to stop exporting US jobs to China (it is not sensible for the US to empower China as it has over the last 3 decades).. China is rising and the US is declining. Such is history.

There is no need for the US to go to war with China over this new reality. Right now the US should try to protect its own interests and understand that we can protect the jobs of the American people. World war is not necessary to do that.

    1. @ ToivoS: A primary rule here is that you read carefully both the quoted text from other sources in the post AND read the articles linked in the post. If you’d done that you’d know that Bannon explicitly said that the U.S. would go to war with China in the next 5-10 years. If you’d done that you wouldn’t waste both our time.

      1. Richard

Here is a more recent link to Bannon’s trip to Hong Kong

        https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/13/steve-bannon-heaps-praise-on-xi-jinping-during-stalking-horse-hong-kong-trip

I have read Bannon’s stuff for some time and I have interpreted his words about the danger of war with China — not that he is advocating such a war. At that level I agree with him in that there is a danger of war, not that I would support such a war. Richard you should read your sources more carefully.

        1. @ ToivoS: Stop insulting my intelligence. I don’t give a crap how you “interpret” his words. The words are right there before you, speak for themselves, & don’t need interpretation:

“We’re going to war in the South China Sea in five to 10 years.”

You are done in this thread.
