A number of readers (and even some provocateurs) were curious if, and when I would tell the story of my relationship with Shamai Leibowitz and why he leaked, and I published material from secret U.S. surveillance of Israeli diplomats who were escalating hostilities with Iran while also lobbying Pres.-elect Obama to be allowed to “finish the job” of Operation Cast Lead. I’ve finally done so at Truthout. It contains extensive excerpts from blog posts I wrote at the time which outline specific semi-covert interventions by Israeli diplomats in U.S. political life, which advanced Israel’s national interest (at least as portrayed by this far right government) in demonizing Iran and continuing the Gaza war.

It’s a good thing you published this material again (I missed it the first time) and the timing is impeccable. I pray that this relevant work gets widely circulated.
I, for one, am really grateful for your efforts, Richard, especially in trying to shed as much light as possible on this idiotic escalation with Iran.
And this also shows us so clearly the heroism of Shamai Leibowitz, who paid an awesome price for his bravery.

After I reading & re-reading your piece on Truthout today I distributed it everyone I know on the ‘net.
As Mary said your TIMING could not have been more perfect, what with the nonsense B-film script about the supposed assassination plot against Saudi official by Iran…Israel is desperately trying to convince the world that another war is essential…so that they wont have to “fear” their neighbors…There is an easier way–if they’d only cease attacking their neighbors, murdering Palestinians, oppressing “citizens” who are not Jews, harassing, arresting, imprisoning, beating, terrorizing everyone around them…there may still be a slim chance at reconciliation. But unfortunately it seems as if the israeli govt ‘leadership’ and chief rabbis have chosen to go mad simultaneously. Thank you Richard for that exceptionally well done and timely report on Shemai Liebowitz’s courage and integrity…and your role in getting the information out.

Meri Dagan was right. It’s hard to believe how arrogant and out of touch the Israeli rightists are, if Netanyahu had had his way, it would have been the beginning of the end for Israel.
There is no way Israel could start a war with Iran that did not end in long term serious consequences.
I think Netanyahu banks on America always supporting him, he has too much faith in Congress, and it’s invincibility. This chapter will end soon too. But the’re too blind to that.
