  1. The slaughtering in Hama took place in February 1982, and according to various sources much more than 10.000 were killed.
Robert Fisk estimates 20.000 killed, The Economist 30.000 and the Syrian Human Right Committee between 30.000 and 40.000.
Michel Seurat, a French sociologist who has made extensive research into the subject comes to the conclusion of minimum 20.000 killed. Seurat was taken hostage in Lebanon in 1985, and later executed.

  2. I’d take all the estimates with a grain of salt. This is often the case with massive atrocities and the fact that this author or that author gives a figure means nothing unless they state in detail what the number is based on. Patrick Seale in his book on Asad says government sympathizers put the number as low as 3000 and critics as many as 20,000 or more and he himself guesses a number between 5000 and 10,000 while admitting it’s a guess.

10,000 gives the right order of magnitude.

    1. I meant my previous post to be a reply to Deir Yassin’s post about the number of deaths at Hama in 1982, but I must not have hit the reply button.
