  1. “If the quiet holds, there will not be any problem dramatically increasing aid like food and medicine.

It interesting how Israel is portraying that the aid like food and medicine is Israeli. All the help is paid by non Israelis.

If Palestinians would be clever they would stop their local economy and refuse to have UN, EU, US and Arab aid and force the occupying force to pay their livelihood costs. Which they under international laws would have to take care. Israel hardly could, because its international reputation not for its love of fellow humans life, let millions of people to starve. If Israel alone would be forced to pay the costs of millions of Palestinians we would certainly have peace in a year or two. Israel simply could not afford that.

The problem has been that Israel has been de facto earning with this occupation. USA pays the costs of weapons, guarding costs and wars of the Palestinians bantustans and ghettos, EU, Arabs, UN and others take care of the Palestinian infrastructure and livelihood costs. And by destroying every 5 years the infrastructure Israel has managed to create a financial perpetual motion machine which provides healthy profits and demand to its wholesale and domestic production industry who is selling goods to UN and others.

Since no one had been able to force Israel to even stop slaughtering and mutilating innocent children and civilians, I think this statement misses reality.

Sara Roy, Harvard political economist, is regarded as a foremost authority and researcher on the economy of Gaza.

In Dec 08, after the beginning of the latest siege on Gaza she wrote:
    “If Gaza Falls…
The Israel blockade of Gaza has resulted in impoverishment, hunger and unemployment rates of nearly 50 percent. Such policies are based on two fundamental goals: to ensure that Palestinians are seen as a humanitarian rather than a political problem, and to foist Gaza onto Egypt.”
    article: http://www.stwr.org/middle-east/if-gaza-falls.html

In an earlier article in Oct 2006, she wrote an acclaimed article on the role of international aid and the pauperization of Gaza’s economy.
    Excerpt:
The pauperization of Gaza’s economy is not accidental but deliberate, the result of continuous restrictive Israeli policies (primarily closure), particularly since the start of the current uprising six years ago, and more recently of the international aid embargo imposed on Palestinians after the election and installation of the democratically elected Hamas-led government earlier this year.

The 30 year process of integrating Gaza’s economy into Israel’s had made the local economy deeply dependent.
As a result, when the border was closed in 1993, self-sustainment was no longer possible-the means were simply not there. Decades of expropriation and deinstitutionalization had long ago robbed Palestine of its potential for development, ensuring that no viable economic (and hence political) structure could emerge.

  3. Israel is responsible (along with Egypt) for the well being of Gazans so long as they maintain control over what goes in and out, whether they have troops physically inside Gaza or not. It was this fact that Israel had ceased to have troops in Gaza while imposing a blockade that enabled them to pretend they had no responsibility for the suffering they inflicted. As always, this seemed like a compelling argument to the supporters of Israeli militarism in the US.

  4. Israel can only choose among options.

If the left NEGLECTS to propose viable options, then our truth-telling is ranting and heckling rather than dissent.

  5. “If Israel alone would be forced to pay the costs of millions of Palestinians we would certainly have peace in a year or two. Israel simply could not afford that.”
Since no one had been able to force Israel to even stop slaughtering and mutilating innocent children and civilians, I think this statement misses reality.

Of course it misses the reality because it has not been the reality. Does UN feed the Tibetans or people of Kashmir in that extent Israel has managed the international community to take care? No.

The Israel to policy has without doubt been letting the Palestinian lift their heads little over the ground, then destroying all the civil infrastructure they have managed to build with foreigners money and help. Israel only earns. We have seen this happening so many times.

The best peaceful option for the international community would be finally to understand that the strategy of present decades doesn’t work. Only by forcing Israel de facto to pay all the costs of their slave Palestinians would produce the solution and fast. Israel simply could not provide the big non productive Haredi minority and the occupied Palestinians.

Bibi has promised to Palestinians not a sovereign state but an economic peace. It would be really interesting to know what he means with that idiotic term. A chance for Palestinians lift their head little again before Israel destroys all again for the “10th” time.

My God we non-Israelis are stupid that we allow and pay to see this stupidity to go on. What it helps if Europeans and Arabs give now one billion to rebuild Gaza and then hundreds of millions to feed and educate people of Gaza and then Israel uses 100 million US money to guard the ghetto and lastly 250 million of US money to destroy everything. We are idiots.

  6. I can certainly understand the Norwegian FM:

With more than a hint of exasperation, Norway’s foreign minister, Jonas Gahr Stoere, summed up the general view of donors last week: “Shall we give once more for the construction of something which is being destroyed, re-constructed and destroyed?”

    http://thenational.ae/article/20090118/FOREIGN/573500826/1011

Since Israel will never agree to foot the reconstruction bill, could we please put the onus on the US to use the aid otherwise earmarked for poor starving Israel for this purpose? Ok, I’ll stop smoking that weed already.

@ellen: there have been numerous proposals by the Israeli right to foist Gaza upon Egypt and the West Bank upon Jordan, like here: http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/templateC05.php?CID=2934
I don’t think any of that will fly – Jordan would have to be insane to erect what would understandably be seen as a Quisling regime in the WB. And Israel won’t lightly resign Gaza’s vast resources of natural gas (http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=11787) to a player with incomparably more clout than the Palestinians.
