  1. The more I think about this whole timing, the more it smells to me like election politics in Israel.

The Israeli Obama (of the female variety) needed to seem strong and Israel needed its revenge.

So a pound (or a couple thousand) Palestinian flesh was grinded.

More than that, the fervor with which you and others have looked upon T. Livni as some sort of a more left wing, more sane, more peaceful and generally Obama-like was/is a misunderstanding – just like calling Obama left wing or believing in this hope and change thing.

(sorry for the url, too lazy to shorturl it):

“Sharon saw something he liked in Livni – perhaps toughness, perhaps intelligence, perhaps integrity – and gave her political career a huge lift by appointing her minister of regional cooperation, and then promoting her again and again to more significant portfolios, culminating with Justice and then Foreign Affairs.

Livni, for her part, stood loyally by Sharon’s side during his battles in the cabinet and in the Likud ”

    La dee dah, snip.

“So Livni, to a large degree, is a Sharon protégé. Not coincidentally, as she now runs for prime minister she is surrounded by some of the same advisers who counseled Sharon: Reuven Adler, Eyal Arad, Uri Shani and Yisrael Maimon.”

Just like Obama is part of the same machine that produced Clinton, bush sr, and so his advisors reflect that.

Laa dee dum, snip snip and…

“According to Livni, Israel – when it feels it has accomplished its military goals (and she has never defined exactly what they would be) – should simply cease fire, leave Gaza without any agreements, and warn that if the Palestinians dare fire one more rocket on Israel, the IDF would go in with even greater force.

Sound familiar? It should. It’s the same logic that was behind Sharon’s unilateral disengagement from Gaza in 2005.”

    And um yeah last quote:
“Listen to Livni in 2009 and what you hear is vintage Sharon from 2005.”

    I rest my case.

Welcome to the realists’ club, Mr. Silverstein, it is time to let go of the naivete, open your eyes and see the world for what it truly is.

A piece of excrement, but it’s the best we got – so we must do what we can to make it better.

But first, we need to think logically, and let go of the illusions.

    Salut!

  2. Richard:

“If Israel doesn’t actually lift the ceasefire

That’s got to be a typo, you meant “siege”, right?
