  1. My problems with Mr. Carter have less to do with his supposed anti-semitism and more to do with his over-weaning ambitions and his penchant for self-aggrandisment. This sort of oppurtunism is not conducive to logical thought or objectivity. Alan Dershowitz is the other side of the same coin. Another over-reaching irrelvancy trading on the misery of Israelis for the purposes of self-promotion.

  2. A politician who is ambitious and has a penchant for self-aggrandizement! Shocking! Perhaps that’s why Jimmy Carter is an international statesman and you and I, Shoded Yam, are blog commenters.

  3. @Shoded Yam: Comparing Der Dersh with Jimmy Carter & claiming the latter has the same overweening ambition or need for self-aggrandizement as the former does a grave injustice to Jimmy Carter. There are a lot of things an ex president can do with his time. None of them has chosen to spend it as Carter has. I say nothing but bravo to him. He has almost nothing in common with Dershowitz except that they are both homo sapiens.

  4. Mr. Burns,

“…A politician who is ambitious and has a penchant for self-aggrandizement!”

Lets remember that we’re discussing a single term president who was bounced from office by a B-list actor because of his ineptitude and that of his administration, all of his good intentions and altruism notwithstanding. We’re talking about a President who bungled the situation in Iran, presided over a nightmare economy, mishandled the American response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and gave the CIA the go ahead to initiate the arming and training of the mujhadien, who knew full well what the future repercussions of those actions might be. This is a man, who if it weren’t for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, would still be swingin’ a hammer for habitat for humanity and monitoring elections in Central America. Now as laudable as these activities might be, they won’t put you on the front page of the New York Times and it won’t sell books. Not every ex-president feels the need to self-promote after he leaves office. Not every ex-President feels compelled to justify his presidency for going on 30 years after the fact. If Mr. Carter had actually been a successful President, we would’ve heard alot less from him, and I dare say he might not have had to work as hard at it.

“…Perhaps that’s why Jimmy Carter is an international statesman and you and I, Shoded Yam, are blog commenters.”

Blog commenting is what I do to blow off steam. It doesn’t define me. Comparisons are irrelevant as I’m not under the delusion that any of my comments have world-shaking consequences, and I’m not trying to sell books.

    Richard,

    In regards to;

“…Comparing Der Dersh with Jimmy Carter & claiming the latter has the same overweening ambition or need for self-aggrandizement as the former does a grave injustice to Jimmy Carter”

What gives you the impression that Mr. Carter is any different from the rest of the mercanary bastards that make up the establishment? Look, we’re not talking about Mother Theresa here. The man is a Tri-Lateral stooge with connections to the Rockefellers and the Military-Industrial complex going back almost 50 years.

“…There are a lot of things an ex president can do with his time. None of them has chosen to spend it as Carter has.”

Not all of them felt the need to engage in the sort of damage control that would’ve required 30 years of sack cloth and ashes. I’ll grant you that more of them probably should’ve.

  5. @Shoded Yam:

Not every ex-president feels the need to self-promote after he leaves office. Not every ex-President feels compelled to justify his presidency for going on 30 years after the fact.

No, some presidents accept $500,000 speaker fees. They don’t need to self-promote. What is Carter self-promoting? Peace and social justice? Democracy? Please. Yr criticism is totally unfounded.

Was Carter’s presidency disappointing? Sure. But he was a better president than any number of other 20th century American presidents even with his weaknesses. And his performance since he left office has been superb. Or have you forgotten the Nobel committee thought rather highly of his work (thankfully you weren’t a committee member at the time).

As for presidents justifying their presidencies 30 years after the fact–clearly, you should be seeing the new Frost/Nixon movie to refresh yr memory on that score. Presidents ALWAYS refight the battles of their presidency & justify their decisions. Why do you think they have presidential libraries and what do you think the programming there deals with?

What gives you the impression that Mr. Carter is any different from the rest of the mercanary bastards that make up the establishment?

It’s clear as day to me what the diff. is. Unfortunately, your heart seems hardened for some reason.
