  1. ‘After 40 years of occupation, it is time for all of us to be liberated.’

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the waterspout,
Down come the rain and washed the spider out,
Out come the sun and dried up all the rain,
And the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again.

    (Carly Simon version.)

Well, full marks for sheer tenacity and persistence on the part of the spider but there’s still the unanswered question. Does the spider ever manage to exit this very damp passageway? Or is he simply content to be shuttled, eternally, within its narrow confines?

Eventually, even the humblest spider must stumble upon the alternative; that there’s a much easier ascent to be had on the outside of the waterspout. There, a lot less rain is to be encountered and most of that should miss the spider entirely.

Of course, spiders are not the same as men. But, after more years than 40, we should by now be able to get ourselves out of the wettest of drainpipes – even if that means we have to spin our own very special web to do so.

  2. Dear Richard,
I’m sorry to hear that you recieve so much opposition from all facets of religion. I myself am an American-muslim and i wanted to make my and my communitie’s support for you endevors known. You’re doing a great thing and the Muslim-American community is behind you, as well, im sure, as the moderate elements of all other religions, who simply want peace in the middle east,
    Keep up the good work,
    Rick

  3. Writing for peace, especially the kind Gershon Baskin promotes, is not an easy thing to do. It is especially not easy, on the internet, and even more so on the jpost website. Educating for peace is one of the most important things any of us bloggers can do. Maybe when we convince our Zionist friends, as both you and gershon pointed out so eloquently, that there is no military solution, the Palestinians will start taking the same way too about their need to let go of the armed struggle. Here’s hoping.

  4. Given that my name is being taken in vain, I might as well point out that Gershon Baskin is arguing against a strawman in my case, because (1) I think the wall should be built along the Green Line, and (2) I believe that all the settlements should be evacuated except as specifically agreed to in a bilateral peace agreement. In other words, my support for the wall is conditioned upon it being a border with nothing Israeli on the other side, and also on it not choking the Palestinians.

  5. My memory could be mistaken but in the post of yours which I read quite some time ago & which I commented on at yr blog I don’t at all recall yr saying that you supported the Wall following the Green Line. I don’t know whether I’m mistaken or whether your views have changed. At any rate, I agree w. you that Israel can do whatever it wants with territory on its side of the border.

  6. Yes, they are living here but they had never talked about a ‘palestinian’ state. It is laughable that they even refer to themselves using this name because this is the name that the Romans renamed Judea with. When Pakistan was created there was an exchange of populations. There is nothing wrong with that. They can live in ‘Palestine’ – the eastern half – it’s called Jordan today. And the fact that they want to make their ‘country’ Judenrein shows that what motivates them is less the fact that they want a country and more the fact that they hate Jews.

    1. Can you tell us what gives you the right to “laugh” at Palestinians choosing to refer to themselves as “Palestinian.” Are you Palestinian? If not, I think what you’ve done is the height of arrogance. It would be like me laughing at the name “Israel.” The name, btw comes from the ancient Philistine tribe/kingdom.

And there is quite a bit wrong with forced expulsion & massacres of tens of millions as happened in the India Pakistan 1948 madness. Advocating population expulsion of either Israeli Jews or Palestinians is a major comment rule violation here. Read the rules if you intend to publish another comment here.

Your comments are racist and false concerning what Palestinians believe. This is not a debating society or point scoring venue for you. Come back when & if you want to engage in reasoned discourse instead of propaganda.
