  1. “I wonder if with all the so-called investigations underway in Israel to study the lessons of this war whether Israelis will ever hear this short simple analysis of what started the whole mess: IDF negligence.”

Boy talk about blaming the victim. Hezbollah attacks Israel, but it was Israel fault for not being ready. You can’t be serious.

  2. Hezbollah attacks Israel, but it was Israel fault for not being ready. You can’t be serious.

You don’t appear to know the first thing about military defense. If you leave your enemy a gaping hole through which to attack you, then you’re guilty of lack of preparedness–otherwise known as negligence.

Read the evidence in the post fella. It’s all there for you to see. And much of this has already been confirmed in the Israeli media (albeit more spottily) if you don’t trust this particular source. If the IDF hadn’t made the stupid mistakes it did, Hezbollah wouldn’t have been able to exploit them. Of course, Hezbollah is guilty of the attack. I’ve never said otherwise here. But if the IDF hadn’t had its guard way down, the kidnapping & subsequent mayhem wouldn’t have happened.

Hezbollah is a creature of opportunity. Give it an opportunity & it will attack. The only way to stop this fr. happening is to withdraw fr. Shebaa Farms & negotiate a peace deal w. Lebanon–something Olmert refuses to do (except for bogus rhetoric proclaiming his willingness to sign a peace deal w/o returning Shebaa).

  3. I didn’t claim Israel could not of been better prepared. What I took issue with was your claim that it is Israel’s not being prepared that caused this problem . By your logic what caused France to be overrun by Germany was their being mistakenly dependent on the Maginot Line to defend themselves. France was overrun but the cause was not their lack of preperation but Germany’s aggression.
Israel pulled back to the internationally recognized boarder. There is no point in Israel signing a peace deal with Lebanon until Hezbolloah ( who seeks not just Sheeba Farms but the dismantling of Israel) is disarmed. If Sheeba Farms was still part of Syria would Hezbolloah attack Syria to get it back? Would they even claim that it was part of Lebanon?

Your assertion that Hezbollah is a “creature of opportunity.” who will attack at any oppertunity is racist and dehumanizing. I am surprized to here that kind of rethoric from someone who claims to be a progressive.

  4. By your logic what caused France to be overrun by Germany was their being mistakenly dependent on the Maginot Line to defend themselves. France was overrun but the cause was not their lack of preperation [sic] but Germany’s aggression.

If the French had not been so stupid as to rely on a fixed defense that could be broken so easily by the Germans, then France would not have fallen in however few days it took for Germany to overrun them.

Similarly, if the IDF patrol had been in contact w. its home base, not within sight of Hezbollah emplacements & generally more in touch w. its surroundings, they wouldn’t have ended up being kidnapped. There would’ve been no need for a rescue attempt & 8 soldiers would not have been killed.

There is no point in Israel signing a peace deal with Lebanon until Hezbolloah ( who seeks not just Sheeba Farms but the dismantling of Israel) is disarmed.

I am so glad you don’t run Israeli foreign policy (though an nincompoop named Olmert does now). Hezbollah was a direct outgrowth of Israel’s 18 yr occupation of southern Lebanon. No 1982 invasion & subsequent occupation, no Hezbollah. Similarly, if Israel was willing to give Lebanon what it needed to make peace (territorial integrity viz. Shebaa Farms), then there could be peace. Hezbollah will not disarm BEFORE these goals are achieved. It will disarm in the course of that negotiation when both as sides prove their sincerity & bona fides to ea. other. Yr. view is that first the Arabs do what Israel wants & then maybe Israel does what they want. Not the way international negotiations work. Nor the way an eventual Lebanon-Israel peace deal will work (whether you want it to or not).

If Shebaa Farms were part of Lebanon or Syria, then Lebanon would make peace w. Israel. If Israel was willing to return the Golan similarly Syria would make peace. Very simple.

Your assertion that Hezbollah is a “creature of opportunity.” who will attack at any oppertunity [sic] is racist and dehumanizing

It’s nothing of the sort. George Washington was a creature of opportunity. What do you think the Battle of Trenton was? A masquerade ball? He saw the Hessians were unprepared & poorly defended. He attacked. He whipped their asses. He allowed the Revolutionary Forces to continue their struggle for freedom. That’s what Hezbollah did in its attack as well. It’s what any good guerrilla insurgency does. ‘Racist’ my ass.

  5. “If the French had not been so stupid as to rely on a fixed defense that could be broken so easily by the Germans, then France would not have fallen in however few days it took for Germany to overrun them.”

The question wasn’t whether France would have fallen the question was who was at fault for the conflict starting. The Germans attacted France, Hezbollah attacked Israel.

If Shebaa Farms were part of Lebanon or Syria, then Lebanon would make peace w. Israel.

Lebanon didn’t attack Israel Hezbollah did. Would Hezbollah make peace with Israel???? You didn’t answer my question I asked “If Sheeba Farms was still part of Syria would Hezbolloah attack Syria to get it back? Would they even claim that it was part of Lebanon?”
    Yes or no????

Besides Hezbollah didn’t attack Israel to get back Sheeba Farms they attacked it capture hostages that could be exchanged for prisoners.

  6. the question was who was at fault for the conflict starting.

Ah, now we get into a complex discussion. Did Hezbollah start the Lebanon war? Of course it did? If you ever thought I was claiming otherwise you were sorely mistaken. But no skirmish within a war exists in a vacuum.

Hezbollah was created because there had been no organized Lebanese resistance to Israel’s 1982 invasion & occupation of southern Lebanon. Despite yr nattering about Hezbollah wanting to exterminate Israel, what Hezbollah really wants is both Israel’s return of Shebaa Farms and Lebanese prisoners. Israel has shown absolutely no interest not only in complying with either of those expectations, but even discussing them.

It is this context that the kidnapping took place. Do I blame Hezbollah for being the proximate cause of the summer war? Yes. Do I blame Israel for refusing to addressing the underlying causes of Hezbollah’s grievance? You bet. Plenty of blame to go around as I always say about this conflict.

Regarding Shebaa Farms & your inane question: how do I know how Hezbollah would react if Israel did something hypothetically which you & I both know that it refuses to do & will refuse until the U.S. or UN or both, hit it over the head with a 2×4 & tells it to do it (that is, return Shebaa Farms). It doesn’t much matter who Israel returns Shebaa Farms to. The key thing is to do it. When Israel does this it will have given both Syria & Hezbollah one less reason to support hostilities against it & brought the conflict that much closer to resolution.

Hezbollah didn’t attack Israel to get back Sheeba Farms [sic] they attacked it capture hostages that could be exchanged for prisoners.

Then you haven’t been reading what Nasrallah said in practically every speech he delivered during the war. Exchanging prisoners & the return of Shebaa are inextricably intertwined in his mind. If you don’t think having Israel continue to sit on Arab land is something that sticks in Hezbollah’s (& Syria’s) craw, then you know nothing about the Mideast conflict.
