Adelson Promotes Outsourcing U.S. Jobs to China

Thursday, October 28th, 2010
sheldon adelson

Mr. Adelson: how many terms are you buying for Bibi? (Leila Navidi)

In case you ever needed an example of a wealthy, powerful corporate titan who can thumb his nose at many of the commonly accepted notions in contemporary American political life and get away with it, let’s take Shelly Adelson.

As recently as a year ago or so his entire gambling empire hung in the balance.  His Las Vegas property was hurting due to the ailing U.S. economy, China had sharply curtailed visas for its high-roller citizens to lose their wads of cash at his Macao casinos, he put a major development there in the deep freeze.  But somehow, with some deft renegotiation of outstanding loans and thanks ironically to the Obama administrations bringing the U.S. economy back from the brink, Shelly is sitting pretty once again.

But the man truly has balls.  Think Progress reveals that among the lies the Chamber of Commerce has told about its foreign affiliates is that only American firms are members, when in truth foreign firms belong to them as well.  And at least 80 foreign firms are participating in the Chamber’s $75-million blitzkrieg attack on the Democratic Congress.  A case in point is the Chinese-American Chamber, which worked closely with the Chinese government and the American Chamber to create a series of business seminars, which taught the basics of outsourcing American jobs to China.  Shelly Adelson, no doubt owing many favors and much wealth to his Chinese masters, hosted a series of such workshops in Florida.  You remember that sucking sound that Ross Perot noted during a presidential debate?  The sound of U.S. jobs leaving this country and going abroad?  Well, that’s Shelly Adelson sucking those jobs and sending them off to his pals in China.  Can you think of any two issues less popular in the American electorate than outsourcing and China?  Yet there’s Shelly standing tall on behalf of things most Americans hate.

Many of the companies donating to the Chamber’s slash and burn ad campaigns are foreign outsourcing companies who will benefit from the continuing job drain from this country.  1.4 million American jobs have been outsourced since 1994 in the nine states in which the Chamber is spendning most heavily in this election cycle.

I’ve just been perusing the Adelson Foundation 2008 990 Report and it contains a few eye-openers.  Among the far-right philanthropy which he supported was: $28-million to Birthright (down substantially from previous years);  $1.6 million to the Shalem Foundation, his Likudist think tank which also employs/ed Michael Oren and Natan Sharansky; $250,000 to Mort Klein’s pro-settler Zionist Organization of America; $150,000 for Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET) which has promoted the Obsession anti-jihadi film; $100,000 to the “American Islamic Conference” (an error, which should read “American Islamic Congress“), a group of anti-jihadi neocon Muslims on whose board sit Zuhdi Jasser and Kahleel Muhammed (both of whom were featured in the Clarion Fund anti-jihadi films), and Hillel Fradkin of the Hudson Institute; $70,000 to CAMERA, a pro-Israel media advocacy group.

It should be noted that Shelly Adelson has many other ways of supporting his far-right pro-Israel goals and this foundation is only one of them.  So it doesn’t reflect the millions he’s sinking into Yisrael HaYom, the Likudist tabloid also known as Bibiton.  Nor does it reflect the enormous sums (by Israeli standards) he’s investing in Bibi Netanyahu’s election campaigns.

I wanted to return to the libertarian-inspired Donors Capital Fund founded by the Koch family, which is pouring tens of millions into the onslaught against the Democratic Congress this election cycle, which Pam Martens exposed in Counterpunch as the source of an $18-million 2008 donation to Clarion Fund.  This, in turn funded the 28-million strong DVD drop during the presidential campaign of the anti-jihad film, Obsession.

I’ve just been reviewing some of the other far-right pro-Israel gifts from DCF that year and it too is eye-opening: $25,000 to self-same American Islamic Congress, $750,000 for Daniel Pipes’ Middle East Forum, $300,000 for the pro-Israel media advocacy group MEMRI, and $155,000 to the neo-liberal, free-marketeer Friends of the Israel Center for Social and Economic Progress.

Clearly, there was at least one major Jewish donor to DCF in 2008 who funded much of this grantmaking.  In the past I considered Adelson as a suspect and he still is near the top of the list, but given her recently exposed funding of the Park51 anti-Muslim campaign, Robert Spencer’s Jihad Watch, Pam Geller’s Atlas Shrugged, and David Horowitz, I have to consider Joyce Chernick as a very likely possible suspect.  She has the means clearly, along with an obsession with funding the anti-jihadi world in grants I’ve listed here.  She could easily be our culprit.

Israel Lobby Loonies Stalk J Street

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Love that kosher sushi--that makes it worth the trip

Tomorrow, J Street will be celebrating its merger with Brit Tzedek and the launch of its local grassroots initiative with meetings all over the U.S. The main event will be held at Penn Hillel and will be videocast all over the country to the other gatherings. It will feature J Street director, Jeremy Ben Ami. For the loony Israel lobby right, it’s too much to bear. Not only is J Street going from strength to strength, a university Hillel is hosting the traitors.

That mobilized the forces of ZOA and Z Street (what dya think the “Z” stands for?) into a full bore stalking expedition.  Not to be outdone, they’re scheduling not one, but TWO counter meetings at Penn Hillel which are deliberately timed to compete (that’s called stalking).  It’s going to be something like biur chometz in which they’ll go through the building with a fine-tooth comb ridding it of any bit of J Street defilement.  Maybe they’ll even host an exorcism if they feel the building has been mortally compromised.

Penn Hillel has been under such assault that it felt compelled to release a statement explaining its decision to offer a rental space to J Street.

You can see the graphic for the Z Street event displayed here, which will feature former Aipac hack, Mitchell Bard, author of the Jewish Virtual Pro-Israel Library.  Bard also directs the ACE program which funds pro-Israel academic positions on willing campuses thanks to the help of the Schusterman Foundation, which also pays Mitch a cool 125G’s for his trouble.

The ZOA has brought one of its staff hit men to conduct a full bore witch hunt entitled, Is J Street Bad for Israel? The question mark seems superfluous.  This event is co-sponsored by Hillel while the J Street event is not.  But the mere idea of J Street inside a Jewish building seems to have the loony right in fits of apoplexy.

Many Jewish peace activists chuckle at the antics of lunatics like Mort Klein who has been shrying about left wing Jewish perfidy for decades.  But the truth is that Klein and ZOA have the support of the cream of the Jewish fat-cat funding world.  If you review this press release you’ll see that no less than Ronald Lauder, Mort Zuckerman and James Tisch will headline this year’s fundraising dinner.  Itamar Marcus, former Israeli intelligence officer and current director of the Palestinian media smear outfit, Palestine Media Watch, will also be honored with an award actually named after Ben Hecht (!) for his hatchet work.

White House Meeting with Jewish Leaders: Mort Klein’s ZOA Out in Cold

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Poor Mort Klein must be foaming at the mouth.  Used to being routinely invited to high level White House briefings under previous presidents, Pres. Obama left him out in the cold yesterday when he met with leaders of 14 Jewish groups.  The last time Obama staffers met with a similar group they did include Klein, who fulminated about his extremist pro-Israel agenda.  Apparently, he wore out his welcome and may not see the inside of the White House for some time.

Malcolm Hoenlein WAS invited to the meeting and attempted to fill Klein’s shoes with his negativity, none of which Pres. Obama was having.  Malcolm ought to watch out–he may be the leader left off the list for the next meeting.

A correspondent for Rupert Murdoch’s otherwise strongly pro-Israel Australian notes:

Mr Obama yesterday held his first meeting with US Jewish leaders – a meeting that marked a possible changing of the guard of Jewish leadership in the US.

Groups which under George W. Bush enjoyed good access to the White House – including the Lubavitch movement and the Zionist Organisation of America – were not included on the keenly contested list, while more liberal groups such as Americans for Peace Now and the newly formed J Street Lobby met Mr Obama.

This could be one of the reasons why the ZOA’s Lori Lowenthal Marcus is creating a new right-wing group that plans to shadow (read, “smear”) J Street.  Even she sees the handwriting on the political wall.  The jealousy is palpable.

For those of you keeping score at home: Lubavitch and ZOA–out.  Peace Now, J Street, Israel Policy Forum–in.

H/t to Sol Salbe.

J Street: Wanted for Treason

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009
Treason hunter, Allyson Rowen Taylor

Treason hunter, Allyson Rowen Taylor

It looks like Jeremy Ben Ami may have a wanted poster in his future.  The rightist pro-Israel truth squads are on his trail.  They’ve practically placed a bounty on his head though they haven’t gone so far as to say: Wanted Dead or Alive!

Those idle pranksters Allyson Rowen Taylor (formerly associate director of Stand With Us) and Lori Lowenthal Marcus (one of Mort Klein’s ZOA acolytes) have announced to the world (or no one in particular) that they’re so jealous of J Street’s enormous success (and attendance yesterday at a White House meeting with Pres. Obama) that they’re forming a shadow group to hector J Street.  Their group is going to be called Z Street for reasons no one understands and about which no one cares. The headline of their public announcement read: “Z Street is launched, Will end J Street Treason.”

When J Street holds its first big national conference in October, Allyson and will be there on a street corner in D.C. with her fellow screaming harpies telling the world of J Street’s treason against the Jewish people.  This “treason” meme is interesting.  Readers of my blog will note that Allyson’s bosom buddy is Rachel Neuwirth.  The latter’s website asserts that (presumably) the founders of J Street, yours truly, and Israeli Jewish peace activists would be prosecuted at Nuremberg-like tribunals for crimes against the Jewish people:

It is the radical Jewish left that contributed to the immense moral and political corruption that pervades the Israeli government…The destructive influence of this Jewish “fifth column” has caused hundreds of thousands of patriotic Israelis, who had their fill of this corruption, to emigrate to other countries.

These individuals have long forfeited their claim to be considered legitimately Jewish and to live freely in the Jewish State of Israel…These Jewish “fifth columnists” are consciously malevolent and know full well what they are doing. They should each stand trial before a Nuremberg-style tribunal on the charge of perpetrating war crimes against the Jewish people and for crimes against humanity. Those found guilty should be given a near-term date to emigrate voluntarily, forfeiting only their real property, or face physical expulsion minus all their assets. This would be extremely lenient considering that many victims of their treasonous actions have been killed and wounded. Just as they vigorously supported the expulsion of Jews from Gaza, even under brutal conditions, in the name of peace and security, they cannot now object to their own removal, also, in the name of peace and security.

So I guess we should ask Allyson whether she has that in mind for poor Jeremy.  Maybe he should move his assets to an offshore account just in case Allyson and the Jewish Furies come after him.

And just in case you doubt Allyson’s bona fides as a pro-Israel activist, she was the one responsible for Urban Outfitters pulling those pro-terrorist keffiyehs from its catalogue a few years ago.  A few choice words from her gets corporate CEOs who are in bed with terrorists to sit up and take notice.  So, Jeremy beware.  She slays dragons!

But let’s get to the core of Z Street’s “mission,” such as it is:

“No more appeasement, no more negotiating with terrorists, no more enabling cowards who fear offending more than they fear another Holocaust.”

With enemies like this, J Street comes out smelling like a rose.

And these people are nothing if not grandiose:

Operating under the aegis of Taylor’s non-profit organization “People Against Hate Speech,” Z STREET has obtained permits for a huge rally in front of the White House on October 27th – the same week that the rabidly anti-Zionist J Street holds its first annual meeting in the nation’s capital.

If I were J Street I’d be quaking in my boots at the expectation of hordes of pro-Israel ranters running through the halls of the conference venue shouting about treason, appeasement and causing “another Holocaust.”

And just in case you ever doubted the need for yet another rightist pro-Israeli propaganda group (Stand With Us wasn’t enough, Allyson?), here’s proof aplenty:

There are many who ignore global threats to Israel’s existence, including the threatened dismemberment of Israel by her domestic and foreign enemies; Z STREET will become a leading-edge organization for educating and informing all Americans about the need for, and the facts that support, the Zionist mandate.

I’d link to Z Street’s website but the thought of sending even one reader their way is too much to bear.

Obama Expects Full Settlement Freeze and Two-State Position by July

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

On the eve of his departure for the Middle East, Pres. Obama has laid down a further demand of the Netanyahu government.  He expects a new Israeli “plan” (read, settlement freeze and two-state position) by July:

United States President Barack Obama intends to give Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu four to six weeks to provide an “updated position” regarding construction in West Bank settlements and the two-state principle.

While in Saudi Arabia, Obama will ask King Abdullah to give a green light to moderate Gulf states to resume diplomatic contacts with Israel.  The new Israeli position would be the quid pro quo.

Rhetorical question: why is it that no previous U.S. administration was able to come anywhere near this clear and forthright an approach to U.S.-Israel relations?  I know, I know.  There are lots of reasons for this.  But as I watch this unfold I marvel that it took so long to break this logjam and that no previous president was able to do it.  I realize that Obama has not “done it” yet.  But he’s a damn sight closer than anyone has been in the past three or four decades and I give him a lot of credit for that.

Obama Transition Team Meets With Jewish Peace Groups: ‘Times They Are a Changin’

Friday, December 19th, 2008

There was a time when Administrations seeking to gauge the political temperature of the political community might call in a Steven Rosen, Malcolm Hoenlein, or Abe Foxman and feel confident that what they heard represented the communal consensus.  And invariably, the tune they sang was straight pro-Israel and slanted toward Likud.

Thank God, that’s no longer the case.  When Dan Shapiro, Obama’s Jewish liaison, decided the transition team should hear from the Jewish leadership, he included the usual suspects.  But it was also important to hear from J Street, Peace Now, Israel Policy Forum and Brit Tzedek (ZOA was also included and JTA’s Ron Kampeas gave him far too much copy as usual).  Some of these groups have never been so close to presidential power.  It’s practically unheard of, and confirms the new-found clout of Jewish peace groups.

One of my informants who knows a thing or two about such events claims the meeting was a relatively useless dog and pony show.  Getting representatives of 29 groups into one room guarantees almost nothing useful will be said or done.  While I certainly concede he is right, I still think it means that access to the White House will no longer be denied to the peace lobby.

Another Jewish editor pointed out to me an even more signifcant aspect of this meeting I wasn’t aware of: in the past, the Conference of Presidents was seen as the Jewish “umbrella” network under whose auspices these meetings always took place.  No longer.  The Conference had no part in the meeting except as one of the 29 invitees.  Consequently, Malcolm Hoenlein refused to attend due to “scheduling difficulties.” Could it be this might be Obama’s “payback” for Hoenlein’s attempt to foist Sarah Palin on the Jewish community as a major speaker at an anti-Iran rally outside the UN just before the election?

I understand Mort Klein had a full-fledged hissing and grunting attack about the enemies of Israel with whom he was sitting in the room.  He even complained the roster of invitees couldn’t possibly be balanced since the Obama people hadn’t invited one of his kissin’ cousin right wing groups, Americans for a Safe Israel.

I am hoping that a more moderate Administration Middle East approach translates into a more pragmatic legislative agenda regarding Israel relations and less bellicose proposals championed by Aipac’s supporters.

No one’s claiming that Aipac or other Israel lobby groups won’t be heard since they command powerful megaphones.  But they don’t own the PA system as they used to.  It’s a new day.

Hebron and Hoenlein: Silence of the Jewish Lamb

Friday, December 12th, 2008

The Forward notes in an article today that the largest U.S. Jewish umbrella group, the Conference of Presidents, refused to support the government’s eviction of extremist settlers from Hebron’s House of Contention.  The Conference also tellingly refused to condemn the subsequent settler riots against Palestinians and Israeli police:

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, an umbrella body of 51 Jewish groups, has not issued a statement about the evacuation of settlers and their supporters from a disputed house in the West Bank town December 4 followed by settler violence against Hebron’s Palestinian residents.

Moreover, Daily Alert, the Presidents Conference’s Internet newsletters of Middle East-related published articles, did not refer to the incidents at all during the week after they occurred. Daily Alert is sent via e-mail to tens of thousands of free subscribers and is displayed on Web site of the Presidents Conference.

…Calls seeking comment from the Presidents Conference’s executive vice president, Malcolm Hoenlein, and its chair, Harold Tanner, were not returned.

The Forward does not note that Aipac too has refused to issue any statement, though JTA earlier reported on Aipac’s silence by claiming the group generally doesn’t make public statements about internal Israeli policy (isn’t that a laugh, considering how aggressively interventionist their approach is regarding promoting Israeli interests within a U.S. political context).  To my mind, even if this is true, it does not excuse its silence on such an important issue regarding Israeli democracy.

Through the Forward’s goading, the flagship Orthodox organization  and ZOA both made “on the one hand-on the other hand” statements which basically cancelled out anything positive that might be gleaned from them:

On the right, the Zionist Organization of America, which had opened a symbolic office in the Hebron building to show support for the settlers, remained silent for a week before issuing a long statement December 10. The ZOA expressed regret that the Israeli authorities, especially Defense Minister and Labor Party leader Ehud Barak, decided to forcibly expel the militants. The group, however, stressed that it did not condone the ensuing violence.

Though the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America did not issue a statement, it aired similar views. In an e-mail to the Forward, the union’s public policy director, Nathan Diament, stated that despite its feeling that the evacuation was unwarranted, and its objection to Olmert’s use of the word “pogrom,” the O.U. leadership “does not believe this justifies Israelis attacking IDF soldiers, and it certainly does not justify acts of harassment or violence against Palestinians.”

The article quotes a non-plussed Eric Yoffie wondering why the Conference doesn’t get up off its tush and say something since so many of its constituent groups have denounced the violence.  To this I respond, why don’t the Reform movement and other liberal groups quit the group?  If you wait for the Conference to reform itself so it truly represents American Jewry you’ll be waiting for the Messiah.  And even then, Malcolm Hoenlein would find some reason to delay.

As I read The Forward’s overall coverage of the Hebron affair (with multiple stories covering seemingly every aspect of the incident) I was filled with admiration.  Larry Cohler-Esses recently became the assistant managing editor and while it’s very possible the coverage might’ve been similar without him there–I believe his presence really “took it up a notch.”  It went from very good previously to superb now.

One especially good story detailed the ideological leaders of the extremist settlers, focussing on Daniella Weiss.  This statement from her was chilling:

“They [the settler rioters] are not afraid of prison, they are not afraid of trials, they just express loyalty to the land,” she told the Forward.

This perfectly reflects the political pathology of the extremist settlers.  The state is something to be reviled.  Laws are meaningless.  All that matters is the mystical concept of “the land.”  This is the irredeemable contradiction between such mystical theocratic mumbo-jumbo and the State of Israel as we know it.  There can never be any commonality between the two.  All that is possible is war.

The article goes on to quote another of the movement’s leading “thinkers,” Rabbi Dov Wolpe:

As far as Wolpe is concerned, the government comprises those who “sit here and represent the terrorists.” President Shimon Peres “is representing the position of the terrorists,” he said.

The third settler leader profiled, Baruch Marzel, explains the new “price tag” policy thus:

A government official who orders a settler evacuation, he said, commits a crime against your people [and] they have to pay a price, and [with] a heavy price they will think twice about committing the crime.”

How is it possible to govern a country with such an attitude?  Any action by said government that violates Marzel’s “conscience” becomes not just politically objectionable, but a crime.

Interestingly, Marzel twists the aspiration of liberal western democracy for tolerance and against racism into a concept that is useful to him:

Marzel argues it is the government that is racist for hampering Jewish settlement. The Hebron evacuation, he told the Forward, was “pure racism. It is…part of the move by the liberal leftist people of Israel against those loyal to the land.”

Much like the KKK, Marzel deliberately seeks to create racist provocation within Israel.  Here he comments on why he will march with his followers in an Israeli Arab village:

“We have a cancer in our body capable of destroying the State of Israel: people who support terrorism, Hamas, the PLO [Palestine Liberation Organization], and these people are in the heart of Israel, a force capable of destroying Israel from the inside. I am going [in order] to tell these people — the Land of Israel is ours.”

If Olmert, Barak or Livni think these people can be dealt with or finessed or ignored, they are sadly mistaken.  There will, at some point, have to be a showdown.  The State must supersede them and impose itself on them or there will be disaster.

And let them call it by whatever names they wish.  Those who reject Israeli democracy must never be allowed to realize the Jewish ayatollah-riddled state with which they would replace it.

Mort Klein and the No-State Solution

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Mort Klein is at it again.  His latest outrage is to ridicule the two-state solution in overtly racist terms according to this YouTube video. Note also the outright lies contained in Klein’s timorous high-pitched whiny rant:

What is this “two-state solution?” You all understand that by using that phrase we all intuitively understand that the Arabs refuse to accept Israel as a Jewish state. That’s why we call it a two-state solution, because really it’s a 23rd Arab state solution. But in fact the Arab world and the Palestinian Authority doesn’t accept Israel’s right to exist. They haven’t since it began. They haven’t since Oslo. They don’t to this very day.

…Has any population been less suited for statehood? Their culture, the whole Palestinian-Arab culture is drenched in violence, and murder and hatred. God forbid such a state comes into reality. The former head of the CIA Jim Woolsey warns that it might be decades before they might be ready.

And when we look at Gaza, it gives us a very good idea of what a Palestinian state will look like with armed gangs, and kidnapping and anarchy and the rest. We dare not establish such a state.

Only a deluded true believer like Klein would ignore decades of history which prove that the PA has already accepted Israel’s existence. That Saudi Arabia proposed doing so in 2002 while Sharon ignored their proposal. That Syria is proposing just such a thing in return for the Golan.

It’s also humorous that Klein uses that true blue neocon Jim Woolsey as the arbiter of when the Palestinians will be ready to create an independent state. Other than being an ideological soulmate, what credentials does Woolsey bring to the table that give him any credibility in this field?

As for Gaza, Klein once again is in cloud-cuckoo land. Hamas, no matter how much we may dislike its politics and violent history, has actually created law and order in Gaza where none existed under Dahlan and the Fatah thugs. It is convenient for Klein to confuse Fatah’s mafia like behavior with Jewish abhorrence of Hamas’ militancy as if there is no difference between them. That’s what political-intellectual bullies do. In fact, in a number of ways Mort Klein reminds me of a slightly more muted, slightly more sophisticated, slightly less apocalyptic version of Meir Kahane. But make no mistake, both their views will lead us and Israel to the same place. That is, off a cliff.

That’s why I call Klein’s rant against the two-state solution the “no-state solution.” Because it means there will be no Palestinian state and possibly no Jewish state as well. Or at least no Israel as we know it, since the bloodshed that ensues from Klein’s take no prisoners/scorched earth approach will make Israel untenable and unviable as an ongoing national enterprise.

So who has honored this embarrassment to the Jewish people? JTA of course. Yup, there’s Mort’s byline in the October 13th edition saying, what else, that Palestinians don’t deserve their own state. What does that tell you about the editorial judgment of JTA’s editors that they honor a Jewish racist with his very own byline?

One of the more humorous lines from Klein’s piece is:

It is simply a flat-earth statement to describe Judea, Samaria and Gaza as occupied.

If anyone holds “flat earth” views of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict it would be Mort Klein. Kudos to JTA for letting Mort spread his poison under their auspices. And remember–this is the same guy who put out a press release which JTA quoted claiming Desmond Tutu likened Israel to the Nazis, which turned out to be a fraud. So what does the news agency do in the face of such reprobate behavior? It gives him another chance to spout his utter nonsense and lies. This makes JTA a laughingstock as a serious news organization.
