StandWithUs: On the Side of the [Financial] Angels

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Eli Clifton has written a terrific piece of investigative journalism uncovering the financial sugar daddies and mommies of StandWithUs, the pro-Israel “truth squad.”  He notes the irony that SWU and others like Lenny Ben David, the former political enforcer for Aipac, have called J Street to task for accepting funding from Arabs, while SWU itself accepts funding from wealthy American Jews who support the worst forms of racist attack on Muslims:

…An IPS investigation into the tax records of the donors to StandWithUs, which professes to be ideologically neutral, found a web of funders who support organizations that have been accused of anti-Muslim propaganda and encouraging a militant Israeli and U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. Some of these organizations have tied the origins of Palestinian nationalism to Nazi ideology, and suggested that a vast Muslim conspiracy — in a similar vein to the anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion — is mobilizing to undermine the U.S. constitution and impose Sharia law.

SWU’s annual budget is around $3.4 million.

Among such donors are Susan Wexner, heiress to the Wexner family clothing empire, who contributed $850,000 between 2005-2008:

Wexner also made contributions to the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA), and the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD).

…Critics say [MEMRI] is a propaganda outlet, and accuse it of mistranslation and overstating the prevalence of anti-Semitism in Middle East media.

Independently, I have verified that Wexner contributed $600,000 to an Israeli group aiding the settlers of Gush Katif, many of refuse to resettle permanently in protest of their forced evacuation from Gaza.  She’s also one of those who believes there’s no left or right when it comes to Israel, but that there is only one morally correct position–being pro-Israel.

Returning to MEMRI, Roz Rothstein’s defense is touching, if self-serving and inaccurate:

“MEMRI is used by every news publication on the planet. People don’t look at MEMRI as right-wing. It’s just verbatim Arabic translation. They’ve never been cited for inaccurate translation.”

In 2007, CNN correspondent Atika Shubert and Arabic translators accused MEMRI of mistranslating portions of a Palestinian children’s television program.

“Media watchdog MEMRI translates one caller as saying — quote — ‘We will annihilate the Jews,”’ said Shubert. “But, according to several Arabic speakers used by CNN, the caller actually says ‘The Jews are killing us.”’

Wexner also supports CAMERA, a group which lies about the record of Palestinian Canon Naim Ateek, a leading Catholic anti-Occupation cleric:

CAMERA, another media watchdog group, has caught criticism for denying reliable reports of settlement expansions, leading the executive director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Donald Wagner, to describe CAMERA as “a well-known source of extremist pro-Israel propaganda that is routinely challenged by Israeli and international human rights and peace organizations for its consistent misrepresentation of the facts in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

She has also supported the leading neocon think-tank, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies:

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies is a policy institute “founded shortly after 9/11 by a group of visionary philanthropists and policymakers to support the defense of democratic societies under assault by terrorism and militant Islamism,” according to its website.

However, the group has frequently been cited for pushing a hawkish U.S. foreign policy in Iraq and Iran, and the Christian Science Monitor called it one of the “top neocon think tanks.

Another top SWU donor is the wealthy Los Angeles funder and Aipac powerhouse, Larry Hochberg, who’s given $400,000 to SWU:

Larry and Andrew Hochberg contributed over 400,000 dollars to StandWithUs since 2005 and also contributed to FDD and Honest Reporting, another watchdog group that monitors the media and “exposes cases of bias” against Israel.

Much like MEMRI, Honest Reporting has come under attack for taking words and phrases out of context and for producing the documentary “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West.”

Twenty-eight million copies of the film were distributed by direct mail and newspaper inserts before the U.S. presidential election last November.

Honest Reporting, Aish Hatorah and Clarion Fund share a cozy ideological relationship (two brothers run all three groups) supporting extremist settlements, Islamophobic films like Obsession and Third Jihad, and Judaizing East Jerusalem.  They were also involved in lobbying for John McCain’s presidential candidacy through one of their websites.  To this day, no one has been able to uncover who contributed well over $15-million to manufacture and disseminate these DVDs.

SWU’s third-largest donors are Lawrence and Susan Post who:

Contributed just under 70,000 dollars to StandWithUs since 2005 and contributed to MEMRI and Christians United For Israel (CUFI), a U.S. “pro-Israel” Christian organization founded and chaired by controversial pastor John Hagee.

Rothstein has the chutzpah to blow smoke up our rear ends with this disingenuousness:

Asked if the philanthropy of their donors reflected a right-wing political leaning by StandWithUs, Rothstein rejected the idea.

“I don’t think it’s fair since our tent is pretty broad,” she said. “Some people call us ‘left of center, others call us ‘right of center’ and some call us ‘center.’”

“We see it as our job to help people understand that the founding document of Hamas calls for the elimination of Israel,” Rothstein added. “If J Street is interested in negotiating with Hamas — who are absolute fundamentalists and violent — it’s like a phony dream to want to sit down with someone who is intending to kill you.”

Some, like me call SWU what it is: far right pro-Israel.  As for Hamas, J Street isn’t “interested in negotiating with Hamas.”  But it does, along with Israeli military and intelligence analysts like Ephraim Halevy and Lt. Gen. Shlomo Brom and many others see a pragmatic purpose to Israel remaining open to talk to Hamas.  In fact, an Israeli poll found that Israelis themselves were willing to have their government talk to Hamas if it would help free Gilad Shalit or guarantee a ceasefire.  Which means that SWU is a Likudist, far-right phenomenon.  No one should be confused by Roz Rothstein’s smokescreen.  She ain’t just pro-Israel.  She’s pro-Likud and pro-settler.  And Eli Clifton’s investigation puts a few more nails in the group’s ideological coffin.

Eli also makes clear that each of these and other donors could have contributed much more than the amounts he discovered if they gave through donor directed funds or other means which would have concealed their specific connection to the contribution.

Gay Porno Hasbara

Youve come a long way, Israel baby--welcome gay porno (Lucas Entertainment)

You've come a long way, Israel baby--welcome gay porno (Lucas Entertainment)

If Tablet Magazine is to be believed, the Jewish world has come a long way baby because the gay porno industry has made the first pornographic film with an all-Israeli/all-Jewish cast.  As strange and disturbing as I find this article on many levels, it is this passage which disturbs me most:

This week, Michael Lucas is making what he calls “a bold move to promote Israeli culture and tourism.” His website extols the virtues of a country rich with natural wonders, intriguing museums, liberal politics, and friendly locals. More than a biblical theme park, Lucas’s Israel is a tourist destination, a place where lovely beaches beckon and muscle-bound men have sex with each other.

Lucas—a porn actor and director, and founder of the New York-based gay porn production company Lucas Entertainment—sees his new film Men of Israel as a tool, if you will, to promote tourism, at least among gay men.

Make no mistake, this is not a one-off promotion by an odd-ball Jewish gay pornographer.  This is part of an orchestrated hasbara campaign spearheaded by groups like Stand With Us, who promoted Israel during the latter’s Gay Pride Festival as a natural ally of gays around the world.  The angle for SWU (and there always IS an angle with groups like this) is to trumpet the alleged homophobia of Palestinian/Arab society compared to the alleged freedom and tolerance of “western” Israel towards a gay lifestyle.  Never mind that Israel is less tolerant of gays than the average western country.  That matters little for the hasbaraniks of SWU.

Articles like the one in Tablet make clear the danger of choosing such bedfellows for Israel.  Remember the last major ‘heartthrob’ Israel embraced?  Those evangelicals like John Hagee, who supports a nuclear attack against Iran and claims the Holocaust was a message from God to Jews to become Zionists?

Does anyone in their right mind think that Israel will benefit from a close association with the gay porn industry?  And what was the Tablet editor who commissioned this article thinking?  This is a newsworthy story?  Bizarre, disturbing–yes.  But newsworthy?  But hey, I’m not complaining.  This blog thrives off chronicling the bad judgment of some of my fellow Jews.

Interesting to note that the film has been promoted by those connoisseurs of the gay lifestyle, Jeffrey Goldberg and James Kirchick (who Eric Alterman’s calls Marty Peretz’s “mini-me”). Goldberg takes the typically hasbarist line of comparing Israel’s supposedly tolerant attitude toward gays with the Arab world’s supposedly homophobic approach (I Bet Ahmadinejad Wouldn’t Let This Happen in Iran). This is why Goldberg is the Israeli foreign ministry’s favorite “liberal” (I use the term VERY loosely) Jewish journalist.

J Street: Wanted for Treason

Treason hunter, Allyson Rowen Taylor

Treason hunter, Allyson Rowen Taylor

It looks like Jeremy Ben Ami may have a wanted poster in his future.  The rightist pro-Israel truth squads are on his trail.  They’ve practically placed a bounty on his head though they haven’t gone so far as to say: Wanted Dead or Alive!

Those idle pranksters Allyson Rowen Taylor (formerly associate director of Stand With Us) and Lori Lowenthal Marcus (one of Mort Klein’s ZOA acolytes) have announced to the world (or no one in particular) that they’re so jealous of J Street’s enormous success (and attendance yesterday at a White House meeting with Pres. Obama) that they’re forming a shadow group to hector J Street.  Their group is going to be called Z Street for reasons no one understands and about which no one cares. The headline of their public announcement read: “Z Street is launched, Will end J Street Treason.”

When J Street holds its first big national conference in October, Allyson and will be there on a street corner in D.C. with her fellow screaming harpies telling the world of J Street’s treason against the Jewish people.  This “treason” meme is interesting.  Readers of my blog will note that Allyson’s bosom buddy is Rachel Neuwirth.  The latter’s website asserts that (presumably) the founders of J Street, yours truly, and Israeli Jewish peace activists would be prosecuted at Nuremberg-like tribunals for crimes against the Jewish people:

It is the radical Jewish left that contributed to the immense moral and political corruption that pervades the Israeli government…The destructive influence of this Jewish “fifth column” has caused hundreds of thousands of patriotic Israelis, who had their fill of this corruption, to emigrate to other countries.

These individuals have long forfeited their claim to be considered legitimately Jewish and to live freely in the Jewish State of Israel…These Jewish “fifth columnists” are consciously malevolent and know full well what they are doing. They should each stand trial before a Nuremberg-style tribunal on the charge of perpetrating war crimes against the Jewish people and for crimes against humanity. Those found guilty should be given a near-term date to emigrate voluntarily, forfeiting only their real property, or face physical expulsion minus all their assets. This would be extremely lenient considering that many victims of their treasonous actions have been killed and wounded. Just as they vigorously supported the expulsion of Jews from Gaza, even under brutal conditions, in the name of peace and security, they cannot now object to their own removal, also, in the name of peace and security.

So I guess we should ask Allyson whether she has that in mind for poor Jeremy.  Maybe he should move his assets to an offshore account just in case Allyson and the Jewish Furies come after him.

And just in case you doubt Allyson’s bona fides as a pro-Israel activist, she was the one responsible for Urban Outfitters pulling those pro-terrorist keffiyehs from its catalogue a few years ago.  A few choice words from her gets corporate CEOs who are in bed with terrorists to sit up and take notice.  So, Jeremy beware.  She slays dragons!

But let’s get to the core of Z Street’s “mission,” such as it is:

“No more appeasement, no more negotiating with terrorists, no more enabling cowards who fear offending more than they fear another Holocaust.”

With enemies like this, J Street comes out smelling like a rose.

And these people are nothing if not grandiose:

Operating under the aegis of Taylor’s non-profit organization “People Against Hate Speech,” Z STREET has obtained permits for a huge rally in front of the White House on October 27th – the same week that the rabidly anti-Zionist J Street holds its first annual meeting in the nation’s capital.

If I were J Street I’d be quaking in my boots at the expectation of hordes of pro-Israel ranters running through the halls of the conference venue shouting about treason, appeasement and causing “another Holocaust.”

And just in case you ever doubted the need for yet another rightist pro-Israeli propaganda group (Stand With Us wasn’t enough, Allyson?), here’s proof aplenty:

There are many who ignore global threats to Israel’s existence, including the threatened dismemberment of Israel by her domestic and foreign enemies; Z STREET will become a leading-edge organization for educating and informing all Americans about the need for, and the facts that support, the Zionist mandate.

I’d link to Z Street’s website but the thought of sending even one reader their way is too much to bear.

iPride: Stand With Us’ Pro-Israel Gay Fraud

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Stand With Us is the new Chabad. The difference is that while Chabad inveigles secular Jews to return to their religion, SWU evangelizes a pro-Israel message to Jewish gays otherwise ignorant on the subject. For those not in the know, SWU is a militantly pro-Israel propaganda group here in the U.S. A member of the board of its local Seattle chapter sent me an e-mail saying I should be publicly spanked for my views. And this guy is also a board member of my synagogue, and a social worker at the local Jewish old age home, if you can believe it!

The Jerusalem Post features a mind-boggling story about a new SWU program tied to Israel’s Gay Pride rally which will bring thousands of Jews from abroad to mingle with Israel’s gay community. Roz Rothstein and her fellow SWU Politburo members must’ve thought: “Hey, what better time to convert some of those ignorant, sexually-starved Galut gays to pro-Israelism than this??” Out of this came iPride, which is meant to join the notion of gay pride with pro-Israel pride.

As part of the campaign, SWU is taking a page from the Aipac playbook, bringing 15 key gay opinion-molders to Israel for a round of indoctrination in the guise of studying Israel’s gay culture:

A group of prominent gay opinion-shapers from around the world are to visit Israel to grapple with the country’s sexuality issues on a five-day seminar centering around Tel Aviv’s gay pride parade, scheduled for Friday.

iPride, a project created by international Israel advocacy organization Stand With Us, will begin on Wednesday and focus on showing participants a side to Israel that does not revolve around “conflict” in the traditional military sense.

Instead, the group will hear from speakers discussing the issue of sexuality within Israeli institutions such as government, the IDF and Israeli film, and discover more about Israel’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

The event will bring together around 15 magazine editors, reporters, academics and activists from Harvard, Berlin, the UK, Spain and Italy, including Queer Eye for the Straight Guy presenter Brian Kelly. Speakers at the seminar will include influential figures from Israel’s LGBT community, such as Meretz MK Nitzan Horowitz and movie producer and Kochav Nolad (“A Star is Born”) TV judge Gal Uchovsky.

The idea is to improve Israel’s image across the globe, according to Noa Meir, coordinator of iPride.

In addition to the gay Israel mission, SWU has created a fellowship program to groom Israeli leaders of tomorrow to be mouthpieces in the campaign on behalf of Israel’s image at home and abroad:

Meir is participating in the Stand With Us fellowship program, which recruits 20 people on the Tel Aviv University campus and 150 students from around Israel in an effort to groom the country’s future leaders.

Why is SWU doing this? Because they truly want to paint Israel as a shining example of western liberalism and sexual tolerance? Maybe, though I’ve never before known SWU to take any role in issues of gay rights. I think rather, there is a more sinister motive that goes a lot farther in explaining the group’s motivation.

ipride-nakba don't ask don't tellThese gay pro-Israel Manchurian Candidates will not merely speak nicely of Israel, they will also, at key junctures, help Israel advance its policy agenda abroad. A perfect example is the current campaign to smear Iranian democracy in the run up to tomorrow’s presidential election. The Israeli foreign ministry is staging mock executions of women and gays out side Iranian embassies in order to point out that the country is a sham democracy and absolutely medieval compared to the west. All this helps Israel soften public sentiment for war. Two key constituencies Israel seeks to draw on board are gays and feminists who they’d love to see leading these demonstrations.

So the SWU project is perfectly timed to that end. Another thing should be pointed out here. SWU, as with other pro-Israel lobbying groups like the Israel Project and Aipac, is not simply a movement of good-hearted volunteers dedicated to Israel. It is a group of professional propagandists whose agenda is closely coordinated with the Israeli diplomatic, military and intelligence communities.

To give you an idea how they fudge when it comes to their true mission, here is what they write at the iPride website about “who we are:”

iPride is an Israeli project under the auspices of StandWithUS – an international, non-profit organization that promotes a better understanding of Israel, through examination of diverse issues.

The StandWithUs fellowship gives Israeli students the opportunity to be active in areas that are close to their hearts, and promote social activism on various levels.

This is rhetoric meant to pull the wool over the eyes of unsuspecting Jewish gays unschooled in the ways of hasbara. It’s precisely the same as the Chabadnik who stops you on Venice Beach and asks you if you’ve laid tefillin that day. They begin with the soft pitch. Later they get to the hard stuff.

iPride supposedly doesn’t touch the hard stuff (has v’halilah) like the Israeli-Arab conflict. Where is the need? They can program that once they’ve reeled you in as a convert:

Although the event deliberately avoids the Israeli-Palestinian issue, the idea for the project was partly inspired by reactions to Operation Cast Lead – specifically one incident in San Francisco which saw a gay group identifying with the Palestinian cause and publicly calling to “free the gays in Israel.”

“We know that gays around the world are liberal usually and they tend to identify with the Palestinians,” explained Meir, “and we find it a bit ironic because you can’t really be gay in the Palestinian territories.”

Meir’s gonna have to tell that to the tens of thousands of gay Palestinians. Tell me: just what the hell does this guy know about Palestinians, gay or otherwise? Gornisht, that’s what.

Let’s close with this delightful paean to the fraudulent dream of Israeli multiculturalism:

“We’re hoping to show that Israel is a liberal country, a multicultural, pluralistic country,” emphasized Meir. “That is a side of Israel we are very proud of and that we think should be shown around the world.

“Unfortunately it’s a side that doesn’t get enough attention… As far as a lot of people are concerned, Israel is Gaza and the West Bank and tanks, and they don’t see the beautiful culture and the liberal side.”

Let me ask one itty-bitty question: how can Jewish gays be truly free at the expense of 20% of the inhabitants who are even less free than they?  Not to mention the 700,000 expelled in 1948? Can gays celebrate their alleged freedom to be themselves when millions of other Israelis and Palestinians are disenfranchised? I hope everyone reading this will ponder Michael Levin’s masterful poster above.

Judge Strikes Seattle Initiative-97 From Ballot

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Seattle’s Initiative 97, which called for divestment of the city’s pension fund from U.S. companies benefiting from Israel’s Occupation and settlement building, received a severe legal blow today.  A Superior Court judge agreed with lawyers hired by Stand With Us, a national pro-Israel advocacy group, who claimed the initiative violated state law by interfering with fiscal decisions legally vested in the city pension board, and not with voters.  The e mail from Divest from War was aptly titled “A Sad Day for Grassroots Democracy in Seattle.”

I-97’s supporters argued that state law did not preclude the voters from having a say.  In addition, they argued that democracy would best be served by allowing the voters to have their say based on the merits of the arguments for or against the proposal.

A supporter of the initiative said:

“This is a blow to grassroots democracy in the city of Seattle,” says campaign volunteer and Phinney Neighbors for Peace member Karen Jones. “This ruling says that there is one aspect of city operations that is not subject to legislative oversight, giving too much power to the pension board. However, this campaign is in no way over.”

In effect, Stand With Us, a stridently partisan pro-Israel group, sought to stifle the democratic voice of the people.  It didn’t even want to allow the issue to come before them.  Given the fact that the people of Seattle likely might have rejected the initiative, the opposing side’s strategy appears quite desperate and cynical.  Not only that, documents presented at a public meeting show that SWU and the Jewish community were prepared to spend up to $85,000 to defeat the initiative, a remarkable amount of money for a race that had no commercial interests involved.

Currently, I-97’s supporters are contemplating whether to appeal to the State Supreme Court.  Since their lawyer has taken the case pro bono, they and he must carefully consider their options before going forward.  The well-funded coffers of I-97’s opponents pose no such problem for the other side.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the campaign against I-97 were the deliberate, preposterous lies which claimed that the legislation was “anti-Israel” and that, if passed, it would harm Israel’s ability to defend itself from Palestinian terror.  Partisans willingly obscured the fact that the campaign was FOR Israel by being AGAINST the Occupation.  In the eyes of the opponents, any criticism of Israeli policy–including the Occupation–was, ipso facto, anti-Israel–an odd proposition, but one extremely common to pro-Israel partisans like SWU.

I was also disappointed that a popular progressive Seattle political blog like Horse’s Ass and its author, David Goldstein, was absent from the debate.  Several e-mails to him went unanswered after he had initially expressed some interest in the issue.

I-97 Opponents Plan $150,000 Campaign

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

[Update: Rob Jacobs correctly noted in a comment below that my original title was in error.  it is not Stand With Us that is spending $150,000 to defeat I-97, but rather that amount will be spent to defeat it by those who oppose it (including, but not limited to SWU.]

Opponents of Seattle’s anti-Occupation divestment measure, I-97, announced that they plan to spend $150,000 to fight it in court and on the ballot.  Though I’m no expert in local politics, this seems an extraordinary amount of money to spend for a local Seattle measure.  Of this, $80-90,000 will be spent on hiring an attorney (I’m trying to identify who this is) to represent the group (presumably in court challenges) and the remainder to hire the political consultants, Gogerty Stark Marriott.  Among the latter’s clients have been such conservative corporate clients as Walmart and Weyerhaeuser.  They also represented AT&T in its attempts to topple net neutrality regulations under consideration in Congress.

I recently wrote an op-ed for the local Seattle Jewish newspaper, JTNews, in which I predicted that opponents of the Israel Occupation divestment inititiave, I-97, would pull out all the stops, twisting the meaning of the measure to be anti-Israel.  They’ve gone one better.  In a message to supporters, Stand With Us, the right-wing pro-Israel group leading the campaign, falsely characterizes the Initiative:

…(I-97)…is a Trojan horse, an anti-Israel initiative cloaked as an anti-Iraq War initiative. While proponents claim that I-97 “Divests from War,” two-thirds of the Initiative focuses on divestment from Israel. It would penalize Israel for protecting Israeli civilians from terrorist attacks and Qassam missiles. And it would penalize only Israel and not the Palestinian leadership or Hamas for shooting Qassam missiles at civilian neighborhoods or sending suicide bombers into pizzerias and shopping malls.

Of course, I-97 has nothing whatsoever to do with defending Israel, Qassam rockets or suicide attacks.  I-97 is about the Occupation, period.  It calls for divesting municipal pension funds from U.S. companies that profit from the Israeli Occupation.  At that, only two companies have been mentioned as potential targets: Motorola and Caterpillar.  So much for “penalizing Israel for protecting civilians from terror.”

When you place such a campaign in the hands of right-wing extremists like SWU, you get mendacious, apocalyptic rhetoric like this.  The only question is whether the lies fan the flames of opposition to the measure or whether voters see through the histrionics and are repelled by it.  My hope is for the latter to happen.

I wonder whether the Jewish federation, which is an enthusiastic participant in the opposition campaign, has signed on for such extremist rhetoric.  I, for one, hope that they let the wingnuts rule the roost on this one.  The more extreme the rhetoric the easier it will be to discredit them.

In a side note, Allyson Rowen Taylor, an L.A.-based pro-Israel extremist credits herself as a “founder” of Stand With Us.  It’s interesting to note that she has written that former President Jimmy Carter “clarly [sic] is in cahoots with the radical Islamofacists.”  She’s accused Israel’s major universities, without providing any evidence of course, of supporting faculty members who are “anti-Israel radicals…openly call[ing] for Israel to be annihilated.”

Though I don’t believe she is directly involved in the Seattle campaign, the hate-filled Rowen Taylor symbolically represents the real Stand With Us with whom the local Seattle Jewish community has thrown in its lot.  Rowen Taylor is also Rachel Neuwirth’s best friend and ideological soulmate.  Readers will recall that Neuwirth called a UCLA Hillel rabbi a “kapo.”  Neuwirth recently filed an appeal of her loss in her libel claim against me to the California State Court of Appeals.

Locally, Stand With Us also brags that two local legislative districts considered endorsing the initiative and both voted it down.  What the message neglects to say is that, according to a supporter present at one of the meetings, SWU actually packed the room with opponents who did not live in the district; and on a voice vote they drowned out the actual local residents who supported it.

I’m sorry to report that Brit Tzedek and most other liberal Jewish peace groups, oppose I-97.  Since I’m a member of Brit Tzedek, I have to say that I’m most disappointed in the group’s political timidity.  I think the utterly catastrophic situation which the Occupation has imposed on both the Palestinians and Israel calls for drastic measures instead of calculation and caution.  I’m pleased to say that Jewish Voice for Peace supports it.

Clinton L.A. Jewish Fundraiser Says Obama ‘Movement Will Destroy Us’

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
Daphna ZimanDaphna Ziman, Israeli native and top L.A. Jewish Clinton fundraiser

Brad Greenberg, who writes the GodBlog for the L.A. Jewish Journal wrote to me today about the strange case of local Jewish philanthropist and Clinton bundler, Daphna Ziman, who has taken to the airwaves to denounce the Obama campaign as “a movement that will destroy us [the Jews].” It all starts innocently enough with an African American fraternity dinner at which Ziman was honored for her work supporting African-American foster children.

The keynote was delivered by Rev. Eric Lee, director of the local Southern Christian Leadership Conference chapter. That’s when all hell broke loose. Here’s how Ziman characterized the speech in an e mail which became a viral sensation thanks to its dissemination via the 50,000 member e mail list of militantly pro-Israel group Stand With Us:

I have to tell you of an experience I had last night that was so anti semitic [sic] and frightening:

…He [Rev. Lee] began his speech by thanking Jesus for Obama, who is going to be the leader of the world. He continued by referring to other leaders Like Dr. King, being that this was the moment of celebrating Dr. King’s spirit on the anniversary of his assasination [sic], and Malcolm X.

It was right after the mention of Malcolm X that he looked right at me and started talking about the African American children who are suffering because of the JEWS [in the entertainment industry] that have featured them as rapists and murderers.

He spoke of a Jewish Rabbi, and then corrected himself to say “What other kind of Rabbis are there, but JEWS”. He told how this Rabbi came to him to say that he would like to bring the AA community and the Jewish community together. ” NO, NO, NO,!!!!” he shouted into the crowd, we are not going to come together. “The Jews have made money on us in the music business and we are the entertainers, and they are economically enslaving us.”

…He continued as to how now the salvation has come and the gates have open for African Americans to come together behind Barack Obama, because now is the time to show them.(meaning thejews). He continued to speak about ‘ White supremecy’ [sic] vs the talents and visionaries in the core of African Americans. He demeaned being given freedom, by saying “To what?” to a country that kills women and children.

I could no longer be polite and sit in front of the crowd, so I walked out.

I cried for me and my family, who have tried so hard to help the African American community, because we adopted children from the same realities and wanted to give back to other children and people. We have been completely color blind, for us it was only helping those children in need.

I cried for our beloved country and the division that Barack Obama has caused with his Rev. Wright opening the gates to ‘hate’ against the Jews and whites. I grew up so looking at America as the land of Freedom.

I was honored to receive my citizenship accompanied by members of the Kennedy family. Now, I’m afraid for Israel because Barack sat there for 20 years listening and not standing up for what’s right, why would he standup for Israel?

I cried for the Jewish community who are so blind that they can’t see that there’s a movement here that will destroy us. I cried because for the first time in my life I was afraid of the future.

I cried for our world that is moving backwards and not forward. Everyday, I see children so lost, and so deserving of hope and love. I look into their eyes, knowing that it is their lives that are in our hands. I’m crying now, so I’m going to stop writing because it is so painful.

I don’t know Daphna Ziman. I wasn’t at the dinner. But judging by the histrionics in her account it sounds to me like an extremely emotional, overwrought person who perhaps unconsciously, perhaps unintentionally sees her opportunity to create another Rev. Wright moment for the Obama campaign. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. She’s a true believer in the Clinton cause. She truly sees Obama as a mortal danger to America and Israel. She feels she’s doing her duty by bringing this incident to the attention of a few hundred thousand of her Jewish best friends.

Unfortunately, what we have here are the Obamaphobic Jewish gremlins again let loose to wreak havoc on a presidential campaign. I hate to use such a Christian motif but for the love of God someone’s got to drive a stake through the heart of such nonsense. Forget about the impact it has on the Obama campaign. It’s even worse for the Clinton campaign. Here you have one of her major California bundlers practically on the warpath over an event with no direct connection at all to Obama. To call this a stretch is to use utmost understatement.

To make matters even worse, Ziman has chosen to publicize her charges in an interview with neo-con Pajamas Media blogger Roger Simon. I should add that Pajamas Media’s chief funder, Aubrey Chernick, is a major supporter of Stand With Us, the group which put the “V” in viral in promoting Ziman’s assault on Obama.

One of the more laughably self-serving statements in Ziman’s video is:

“This is not about politics for me. This was not about anything else. This is about my people.

The odd thing about this is she probably does sincerely believe it’s not about politics. But just because she believes it, doesn’t mean it’s true. Does she think that Pajamas Media wants to promote her story out of pure love for the Jewish people?? ‘Course not. It’s political, baby. You better believe it.

I just came across this from the Wilshire & Washington blog which blows the lid off Ziman’s protestations of disinterest in politics. She has written an “essay” called The Road to the White House is Paved by a Distorted Media in which she writes the following:

Well, I have many questions that I dare ask Barack (must not mention middle name or else) Obama.
1. Were you born Barry Dunham or Barack Hussein Obama?
2. Did you change your name? When? Where? And Why?
3. Was there a naming ceremony? Where? Under what circumstances?
4 .Why are we not allowed to mention your middle name?

It occurred to me that the identity of a potential Commander and Chief is rather important…

What we have here is a loose cannon. And this isn’t the first or even second time she’s done something similar as Newsweek reported one of her earlier forays into smearing Obama for being soft on Israel.

Returning to the speech, Rev. Lee emphatically denies Ziman’s charges:

“None of those words are what I said. Not a single word. My goodness,” Lee said. “I look at the Jewish community as allies in our quest for advancement. For me, it doesn’t do any good to indict anybody. I just need help in changing the characterization of African Americans through the entertainment industry, and whoever can help me is fine. And without question there are a lot of influential members of the Jewish community that may be able to help us with that.”

…In fact, disputing her description, Lee noted that he and members of the SCLC are scheduled to take part in a black-Jewish seder organized by the American Jewish Committee on April 17 at Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Eli Lipmen, the AJC’s L.A. spokesman, said Lee has been a friend of the Jewish community.

“Absolutely,” Lipmen said. “SCLC is a respected organization in the community and we have worked with them in the past.”

Lee said his speech began by faulting the black community for its own failings: “I indicted the African American community more so for spending $930 billion and not having control of any industries and for having such a high dropout rate and having 40 percent of our children in foster care.”

Lee said he referenced a conversation he had with an unidentified rabbi, during which he said the two communities needed to address the negative characterization of blacks on TV and in movies “for a genuine collaboration to take place.”

“Black leaders have gone to black entertainment leaders and said, ‘Take the “n” word out of your music and take the “b” word out of your music,’” Lee said in an interview. “And so, my thinking is — in building a relationship, and reconnecting, as it were, like when Dr. King was alive in the civil rights movement — is that our friends and allies in the Jewish community who have influence in the entertainment community can help us in changing the depiction of African Americans.”

In case any of you have been under a bushel for the past few decades, I must tell you that we Jews can get very touchy about certain subjects. We’re petrified about anti-Semitism because we endured so much suffering at the hands of evil ones like Hitler. We sometimes see enemies even where they aren’t because our antennae are so focused on nuances of words, phrases and thoughts that might be anti-Semitic. We have had so many enemies we tend to see them even where they may not be.

Further, Israel is a nation under siege. That makes some of us even more sensitive to such issues. Daphna Ziman has a very extreme case of anti-Semitism-itis. Such a condition does neither Jews nor anyone we come into contact with any good. It turns us into cartoon versions of Jews like Abe Foxman. And it can really hurt presidential candidates we support when we call their opponents racists and anti-Semites.

In fairness, I should add that Rev. Lee released a public statement in response to Ziman’s charges and it doesn’t do him any favors:

…The Black Power Movement emerged after the assassination of Dr. King and it was a direct response to the negative characterizations of African Americans through the silver screen, TV and the music industry, industries that are perceived to be influenced by many in the Jewish community. I then stated to the Rabbis that the Black Power Movement was our effort to define for ourselves our own identity rather than be defined by anyone else. I then indicated in my presentation that I told the Rabbis’ that before a genuine coalition could be rebuilt between our communities, there would have to be dialogue and efforts made to deal with the negative characterizations of African Americans.

It appears to me that Lee is a tone-deaf African-American minister who hasn’t yet learned how to speak in a nuanced fashion about the issues he wants to address. He verges on anti-Semitism without quite coming right out and saying anything that is explicitly so. Slightly troubling? Maybe.

But to take offense in the ‘chewing the scenery’ way Ziman did indicates a person who herself has some problem negotiating life’s byways with a sense of balance and proportion.

Lee’s allies must’ve told him that his “explanation” was less than satisfying, which is why he released a more forthright apology which stated in part:

I unequivocally denounce any anti-Semitic sentiments, statements and behavior and assure you that such hatred is not reflective of my character and my work. Specifically, I do not believe, and the SCLC does not subscribe to the belief, that Jews control the entertainment industries or are responsible for negative characterizations of African Americans.

The fact is that Lee did in fact get very close to saying what he claims he doesn’t believe. Let this be a lesson to him that sentiments perhaps widely accepted in certain segments of the African-American community will get him into deep doo-doo once they see the light of day in the outside world.

Finally, I think that Hillary Clinton has been done a deep disservice by Daphna Ziman. The latter’s attack on Obama was deeply offensive and not something the Clinton campaign should countenance. If Rev. Lee can be big enough to apologize to Ziman for any comments he made that might be construed as offensive, then the Clinton campaign should direct Ziman to apologize for any comments she made about Obama that could be construed as counter-productive. If Ziman is not willing to make such an apology then Clinton should distance herself from her. No senior Clinton Jewish supporter should have the right to claim that the Obama campaign will destroy the Jewish community or hurt Israel. This should be treif

Charles Johnson Axed from Pajamas Media Management

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Charles Johnson (Little Green Footballs founder) and Roger Simon created Pajamas Media together in a self-congratulatory media frenzy several years ago. There was much talk about how PJM would become THE address for the conservative blog world. Readers and advertisers would pour in. Jewish entrepreneurs Aubrey Chernick and Jim Koshland sank $7 million into the venture with big expectations. They also recruited a few liberal bloggers like David Corn and Marc Cooper to give them a veneer of bi-partisanship though I note that both of them are gone.

I don’t know enough about their business model (Dennis would say “what business model?!”) to say whether the project succeeded or failed. Alexa ranks the site 51,000 which, while being semi-respectable doesn’t come near ranking of the liberal media news sites Huffington Post (3,000) or Talking Points Memo (21,000), the conservative Drudge Report (1,000), or the centrist Politico (12,000). But the truth is that aside from Michelle Malkin and Little Green Footballs they never attracted the big name right-wing bloggers that might’ve brought them the readers they expected.

From Dennis the Peasant, the blogger scourge of the PJM enterprise, comes the welcome news that Johnson has stepped down (or been booted) from PJM management responsibilities. Dennis speculates that Johnson’s wild-eyed antics as political bomb-thrower have not endeared him to the VC investors Chernick and Koshland:

I have a feeling that it has finally started to dawn on those same venture capitalists that Little Green Footballs, and therefore Chaz, wasn’t exactly enhancing their reputations amongst the sane folk of the world. If you know what I mean. Charles and LGF have always been out there, it’s just that now they’re both so far out there that it can’t really be ignored anymore.

This begs the question if LGF and Johnson embarrass PJM why do they continue to carry his blog at all? Why not just sever ties cleanly? Could it be that LGF’s Alexa ranking of 25,000 has a lot to do with that? Most PJM bloggers rank far lower than PJM itself. LGF and Michelle Malkin are among the only bloggers with a higher ranking than PJM, much higher. So I’m guessing that PJM can’t afford to lose the readers than LGF provides to pump up the site stats for advertisers.

The only thing that would make me happier to know that Johnson has been booted from the PJM pantheon is to read PJM’s death notice.

Now a word on Chernick and Koshland. Chernick is worth approximately $845 million (according to the L.A. Business Journal 2007 listings) after selling his Candle Corp. computer company to IBM and starting a disaster preparedness company, NC4. He also started a venture capital firm, Ignition Capital LLC. Pajamas Media is clearly very small potatoes for Chernick.

As of 2000, he was a trustee of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, an AIPAC-affiliated pro-Israel think tank. He is listed as a “Visionary Partner” in Stand With Us’s 2007 fundraising diner program. SWU is a stridently pro-Israel advocacy group which, among other things, features Rachel Neuwirth harpie-buddy Alyson Rowen Taylor among its staff. Chernick was the dinner chair for the American Freedom Alliance, a group devoted to fighting anti-Americanism including among Muslims. Safe to say that Chernick harbors strong right-wing pro-Israel views. I think my original suspicion that PJM deliberately chose to feature harshly pro-Israel blogs among its founding partners is borne out in Chernick’s own personal views on Israeli politics.

Jim Koshland is a partner in DLA Piper, the Silicon Valley venture capital firm. He is a scion of San Francisco’s wealthiest Jewish family which founded Levi Strauss. Though the Koshlands are known for having liberal politics, I’m guessing that Chernick is the guiding force behind the PJM investment. Personally, I don’t see what Koshland gets out of associating with this project except an opportunity to partner with Chernick in future deals.
