Glenn Beck at ZOA Dinner: ’18 Months to Save World, I Know How to Do It’

zoa 2011 dinner honorees

ZOA 2011 dinner honorees

Mort Klein and ZOA provide endless enjoyment for anyone with an acute political satiric sense.  Take their latest fundraising gala last night covered by Haaretz.  There was so much to delight in, I hardly know where to start.  Why don’t we begin with the Bar Ilan University professor, who boasted that his Orthodox institution was the only remaining university in Israel that was “Zionist.”  Wouldn’t that be something like Alan Dershowitz bragging that Harvard was the only remaining Christian university left in America?  But that wasn’t the worst.  The good professor complained about his academic colleagues at Tel Aviv and Hebrew Universities:

“There are many Bolshevik post-Zionists at these universities, who pack their faculties with similar-minded lecturers. The Israeli universities are overflowing with post-Modernists who undermine not only Zionism but academic truth itself.”

Did you notice the equation between Zionism and “academic truth” the good professor makes?  Last I checked, the finest universities had no specific ideological or political orientation.  In fact, most truly good academics will tell you that an institution which holds to one is betraying the values of free inquiry that are critical to academia.  This guy is no junior lecturer either.  He’s Ephraim Inbar, the director of the Begin-Sadat Center.  Can you imagine how this hack got Anwar Sadat’s name associated with his think tank?  The poor Egyptian leader must be turning over in his grave.

But why stop there?  There were so many other wonders to behold at this wingnut fest.  How ’bout Republican settler advocate Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who denounced the concept of Palestinian statehood (“A Palestinian state? What is that, anyway?”) in receiving the “coveted” “Dr. Irving & Cherna Moskowitz Award for Promoting Strong US-Settler [er, Israel] Relations.”

Michele Bachmann was on hand to receive the “Dr. Miriam & Sheldon Adelson Defender of Israel Award.”  This is what constitutes “defending Israel” in the twisted minds of the ZOA and the 800 ardent wingnut supporters who flocked to this event:

[She] pledged to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem “on the day that I am sworn into office” and…assert[ed] that “Israel will never be up for grabs – not one inch, not one acre, not one square foot will ever be on the chopping block.”

…Asserting that Iranian President Ahmadinejad was “striving for a second Holocaust” Bachman said that “once again millions of Jews are at the precipice of losing their lives today”. She called for the US Navy to impose a complete naval blockade on Iran, for the US to deploy comprehensive ballistic missile systems “on land, sea, air and in space” and for the Pentagon to prepare “war plans” in order to counter Iran’s nuclear threat.

Ahmadinejad, she said, “will seek to use nuclear weapons against the US as well – and the US will learn what it is to be Israel if it does not act quickly.” She said that the US Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State and CIA director must all support this “freedom policy” and that those in the bureaucracy who fail to do so – “especially in the State Department” – should be replaced.

I really liked that touch of deploying nuclear missiles against Iran even in space.  I didn’t even know we maintain nuclear warheads in outer space.  Just think, it’s not bad enough we’re going to destroy earth’s atmosphere by dropping the Big One on the Aye-ranians, Bachmann wants to send radiation into outer space as well for the next millennium or so.  I found it especially ironic that this nuclear attack on Iran enjoyed the moniker “freedom policy.”  I suppose if you want to “liberate” half the inhabitants of earth of their lives and to pollute their environment for centuries you could call it that.

Then of course, there was the piece de la resistance, Glenn Beck. who fulminated that the situation in today’s world was far worse than in Hitler’s day:

…Because today the world is “aiding and abetting” the ranting of madmen who are out to destroy Israel and the Jewish people.

Somehow he forget Hitler’s appeaser, Neville Chamberlain.  Speaking of which, you knew you couldn’t escape a Beckian rhetorical assault without a brutish “historical” analogy between the left and Nazis.  So he equated the Brownshirts and Occupy Wall Street.  Not to mention OWS facilitates rape because it doesn’t denounce the sexual violence that allegedly takes place at their meeting sites.

Do you think there’ll be an ADL alert taking these a-historical numbskulls to task for abusing the Holocaust for partisan political purposes?  Unlikely.

The best line of the night, by far, was this one:

…”There is an 18 month window” left in which to save the world – “and I believe I know how to do it”. He pledged to announce on December 8 where he is headed – “there is a vacuum and I intend to stand in its place”, he said – but gave no details what he was referring to.

Almost brings to mind Jesus doesn’t it?  Though the analogy might not have gone over so well if it’d been raised last night.  What’s he going to run for?  God?  Please tell me he’s going to run for president.  Please God.  That’s all the Republicans need.  If I thought Obama deserved a second term, I’d be doing a happy dance if Beck threw his Stetson (oh excuse me, that’s Rick Perry territory) in the ring.

Returning to Beck’s statement above, if he “stands” in that vacuum all the way through December 8th he’s liable to suffocate, either from lack of oxygen or the oppressive weight of his own megalomania.  That is assuming he’s humanoid.  If he’s made of the divine, all bets are off.

I bet you didn’t know that the Beck-man was such a chum of Nelson Mandela, did you?  How else to explain this invocation of the great African liberator?

“To claim that there is apartheid [in Israel] when there is none is to diminish Nelson Mandela and all those like him.”

In honoring Glenn Beck, who’s been known to let loose some anti-Semitic ejaculations on his show, ZOA repeated its tradition of honoring such haters.  In 2005, it similarly honored Pat Robertson.

The fact that ZOA has named awards after two of the richest, most racist and chauvinistic American Jews means they’re getting oodles of cash from Moskowitz and Adelson.  I’ll give my own Tikun Olam award to anyone who comes up with the goods on these fat cats supporters of Greater Judea.  I’d love to be able tell you how much they’ve given to the Mort Klein Settlermania Roadshow.

Bibi Threatens Licenses of Israeli Media Which Publish List of Wealthiest Israeli Politicians

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011
Silvan Shalom Judy Nir Mozes

Silvan Shalom who, thanks to his wife, Judy Nir Mozes, is Israel's wealthiest pol at over$40-million

forbes wealthiest israeli politicians

Banned Forbes article on Israel's wealthiest politicians

UPDATE: Apologies to Dvorit Shargel, who broke this story yesterday.  She deserves credit for it and kol hakovod la.  I’ve updated my post to include references to her excellent research.  She’s also helped me correct some errors that crept into previous versions of the post.

Tonight another major breaking story fresh from the Land of Milk, Honey and the Filthy Rich as reported by a confidential authoritative Israeli source.  A few days ago, Forbes Israel published a list of the wealthiest members of the Knesset.  No sooner was the article published than it picked up mentions at the Mako and Globes financial websites.  But those reports quickly disappeared from the web though thanks to the wonder of Google it still lives on here (Shhh!).  I’ll unravel this mystery further on.

The wealthiest on the list was deputy prime minister Silvan Shalom, whose wife, Judy Nir Mozes, is a part-owner (12%) of Yediot Achronot.   He’s worth over $40-million which, on the scale of your average Knesset member, is gargantuan wealth.  Most of his lucre comes from his wife’s family.  Her brother manages Yediot and her sister is controlling shareholder in El Al.  Others at the top of the list include Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman ($25-million), Defense Minister Ehud Barak (nearly $20-million), Meir Sheetrit ($14-million), and the man himself, Bibi Netanyahu (coming in at a paltry $9-million).

Coming from the U.S. these numbers sound like peanuts, but you’ll have to trust me that this is simply unfathomable riches for an Israeli politician.  And of course, it makes you wonder what sorts of deals and under the table arrangements they might’ve made when they were ministers in order to amass such riches, given that Ehud Olmert amassed much of his fortune from similar deals when he was minister of industry.

There are no public disclosure laws in Israel compelling politicians to disclose their personal wealth and list their specific assets so that the public can determine whether they have conflicts of interest in their voting.  Hence, Israeli media rarely if ever report this data.  That’s what makes the list such political dynamite.

Shalom and his wife went ballistic and immediately called Bibi and threatened that if the prime minister didn’t stop publication, Shalom would vote against an Iran attack in the security cabinet, of which he’s a member and which must approve any proposed attack on Iran.  The supreme irony here is that Shalom was willing to sell the souls of the thousands of Iranians who would die from an Israeli attack on behalf of protecting his wealth and privilege from the prying eyes of the Israeli electorate.

In light of the J14 social justice movement‘s popularity in Israel, and its success in bringing issues of income disparity to the fore, Shalom’s back-room maneuvering appears obscene.  Israel has one of the widest gaps between rich and poor in the world (fifth largest among developed nations).  Shalom is the 1% but he doesn’t want the other 99% to know.  For shame.

If this story had a national security angle, Shalom could’ve expected the military censor would suppress it.  But given that it doesn’t, he had to resort to naked extortion to get his way.  To help conceal the far more damaging story that Bibi had threatened to pull the broadcast licenses of an media outlet that published the story, Shalom told his lawyer to draft a letter to the media outlets threatening them with libel suits up the yazoo if they didn’t cease and desist coverage of the story.  That makes it a far more devious conspiracy by which the government allowed the media to say they couldn’t publish because of threat of a lawsuit, when the real reason they couldn’t do so was threat of revocation of their licenses.

Here’s some of the hot-air of Shalom’s lawyer:

Lies without foundation.  falsehoods, perversions of truth at the very least, and libel against my client and his spouse, contrary to the law and the prohibition against slander.

The threat clearly was full of sound and fury and signifying nothing.  The article could in no way be construed as slander and the fact that the numbers are true was a perfect defense against the libel charge.  If there had only been this legal threat, some of the media might have been willing to defy it and publish.  But along with the regulatory threat, no one was willing to brave Shalom’s fury (and that of the others named, who cannot have been very happy either).

A small diversion: according to Dvorit, Judy Nir Mozes told a real sob story to the Israeli financial paper, The Marker, claiming that she really wasn’t rich at all and that her wealth was solely on paper.  Sounds like a story she uses frequently to downplay her power and status.  She further amplified her husband’s concern for the poor and downtrodden youth of Israel in this self-serving tweet (subsequently deleted):

Four years ago, Silvan founded the Israeli Youth Gathering.  As someone who worked four jobs, completed four university degrees, lived in rental apartments until he took to wife a well-established bride.  For this reason, he has never ceased trying to improve the living conditions of Israeli youth regarding housing, jobs and military service.

This, by the way, is the same Nir Mozes who tried to get Danny Ayalon’s personal secretary fired when he was ambassador to the U.S., because the woman hadn’t arranged a meeting for the imperious Israeli with Madonna when she traveled to Israel for one of her Kabbalah retreats.  Then she had Ayalon’s wife investigated because she spent state funds to re-decorate her home.  All this from a woman worth nearly $40 million according to Forbes Israel.  I don’t know if that will bring me under suspicion as well for the crime of slander.  But if publishing the wealth of a public figure is libel, then what kind of country is Israel, where the law is used by the rich and powerful to suppress knowledge and public debate among the populace?

Bibi got Shalom’s message too.  He’d been lobbying hard recently among his cabinet for approval for such an attack.  He needed Shalom’s vote.  Hence, word went forth from the prime minister’s office to the Israeli media that anyone who dared to publish the list would “end up like Channel 10.”  That’s a TV station which owes the government millions in licensing fees, which it can’t pay.  Bibi has been supremely unhappy with some investigative reports of the channel’s news staff, including one that exposed 30 instances of serious violations of Knesset ethics laws in Bibi’s foreign travels.  Unless Channel 10 fired the reporter responsible for the report, Bibi let it be known that the debts would not be forgiven and it would lose its license in months.  If it fired Drucker, the government would go easy and the debts would miraculously disappear.

An Israeli reporter told me a few hours ago that in fact, Bibi has already decided to cancel Channel 10′s license.  Everyone in the Israeli media knows this.  Therefore, a threat by Bibi to do them what he did to Channel 10 would resonate strongly.  Some readers have criticized this theory on the grounds that there would be no legal basis to deny a license.  But given the history of Channel 10 and its imminent demise, Bibi wouldn’t need a real legal basis to attack a broadcast license.  Merely the threat to do might be enough to make a media outlet cave.  This reminds me more of the Godfather or naked loansharking than a democratic government.  But in Bibiworld, that’s how things are done.

I’m sorry to say that so far no Israeli media outlet has been willing to jeopardize itself and report the full story.  Which is yet another reason why Tikun Olam exists (remember that Paypal button, folks).  We go where few Israeli reporters can, or dare to tread.  I say this more out of sorrow than criticism, because there are many honorable journalists there.  I know this because some of them have published remarkably fair profiles of my work.

But I also understand that when a Mafiosi character like Bibi has you by the balls, what can you do?  You have to weigh what is more important–retaining your ability to exist as a viable media property, or standing up for press freedom and democracy by doing the bold thing and in the process losing your newspaper or TV station.  There are few, if any, Uri Avnerys (who was almost beaten to death by veterans of the Kibya massacre, which he’d exposed) or Hadashots in Israeli journalism today, who are willing to stake their newspaper on a principle.  I suppose the investments are simply too big to risk on such high ethical standards.

Those who call Israel a democracy need to know that it is in name only.  Press freedom is only skin deep.  This is the case not because reporters aren’t doing their jobs, but because the people don’t demand accountability from their politicians, because editors cave in to such extortionate demands from them, and because the courts do not rein in such violations, and because there is no Bill of Rights nor constitution to inscribe such rights into law.

You even have the exceedingly odd case of one media outlet, Channel 10, partly owned by Ronald Lauder, exposing the sins of the owner of another, Sheldon Adelson of Yisrael HaYom.  Adleson, with the connivance of Lauder, dictated Channel 10′s apology which was read on air by a station staff member, thus causing the resignation of the station’s chief executive and producer of the show which aired the expose.  In this day and age, there simply couldn’t be an Israeli version of the Pentagon Papers.  Things are too cozy among owners and pols, and principles like freedom of the press are too porous.

Bibitours Scandal: Offer to Save Israel’s Channel 10 if it Fires Political Reporter

Sunday, November 6th, 2011
raviv drucker

Mafia don, Bibi Netanyahu, makes Channel 10 offer it cannot refuse to fire Raviv Drucker (Ohad Romano)

Channel 10′s political reporter, Raviv Drucker, has been a major thorn in the side of Bibi Netanyahu, with his reporting that between his prime ministerships he took multiple foreign trips on the dime of major corporate donors in violation of government ethics guidelines.  Bibi was so enraged by the reports that he sued the reporter and Channel 10 for libel.  So far, all well and good.  Drucker and his employer were only doing what good political reporters are supposed to do: afflict the comfortable.

But there’s a major wrinkle, in that Channel 10, which recently offered an abject apology to Sheldon Adelson for a documentary the station aired that recounted all the sleazy ways in which he operates, owes the state $10 million in royalties and fees.  That puts Channel 10 between a rock and a hard place.  If it can’t repay the debt by December it is in danger of going under.

That’s where Bibi comes in: the station received word that the State would work with the station to ease the repayment schedule and work out the debt if it fired Drucker or put him on unpaid leave.  Bibi’s boys also demanded that the State Controller replace the chief investigator (Hebrew) probing this brewing scandal, which has come to be known as “Bibitours” (in an echo of Ehud Olmert’s travel scandal (Hebrew) that was focussed on his travel agency, Rishon Tours).  Though he’s a tough guy, Bibi isn’t yet a tyrant with the ability to muscle anyone out of his way.

The prime minister’s urgent need to punish and dismiss anyone involved with uncovering details of this case indicates Bibi thinks it could be damaging to him.  This in turn should make it even more attractive a story to any good investigative journalist left in Israel.

In any other democratic nation, such news would result in a major scandal, heads rolled and possibly a prime minister losing his job.  After all, this is outright extortion, the way the mafia works rather than a democratic government.  But in Israel, I’m afraid, business as usual.  Freedom of the press is a principle honored in the breach, if at all.

Last June, Drucker received Israel’s Sokolov Prize for Journalism (awarded by the city of Tel Aviv) for the excellence of his reporting.  This is what mafia chieftains like Bibi do to the best and brightest.  They cut them down to size when they are a threat.  I suppose Drucker is lucky he doesn’t get run over by a car or murdered by a bomb as they do in some countries.

Here is Drucker’s report:

I should point out that I have an interest in seeing Channel 10 survive, since its show Tzinor Layla features my stories irregularly and not many Israeli media outlets are beating down my doors to include my reporting in their coverage.

Anatot: Yisrael HaYom Smears Palestinian Farmer, Calling Him Convicted Rapist

Thursday, October 6th, 2011
yassine refai after anatot settler attack

Yassine Refai, after his skull was smashed by Anatot settlers, requiring visit to Hadasshah hospital

The story of the Anatot pogrom took on a new and even more bizarre twist when Yisrael HaYom, Sheldon Adelson’s vanity newspaper created to boost the political power of Bibi Netanyahu and the Israeli far-right, published a patently false report (page 13) claiming that Yassine Abed Abu Salah Al-Refai, the Palestinian farmer whose cause originally brought peace activists to Anatot to defend his right to farm his land, was a three-time convicted rapist who’d spent 18 years in Israeli jails.  The article also claims without providing any evidence that the Palestinian takes pictures of the Israeli children of Anatot and throws rocks at them.

The only problems according to Israeli blogger, Esti Segel?  First, the story claimed Yassine was originally from Gaza and gained Israeli citizenship through collaboration with the Shin Bet (an almost certain death sentence in Palestinian circles–you see where this is going).  The article also claims he’s married to a Jewish woman.  Actually, he’s a native of the village of Anata where his grandfather was mukthar and founded the village of Anata.  In fact, settlers disinterred the bones of his grandfather from their burial place.

Refai holds Israeli citizenship by virtue of the fact that half the village is included in the municipal district of Jerusalem (East Jerusalem was annexed shortly after the 1967 War).  He has a legal deed to his land from the Ottoman authorities and which Israeli courts and even the settlers of Anatot concede is valid.  Second, the story claimed the last imprisonment began in 1995 and was an 14-year sentence, which would make his release date 2009.  However, the dispute with Anatot, Israeli activists who document such matters verify, began four years ago in 2007.  They have accompanied the farmer to his land at Anatot in that year and others and know he was not in prison as the article claims.

And even if he received early release, the fact that he was a three-time convicted sexual felon would’ve been known far earlier to the settlers who undoubtedly would’ve used it against him in previous legal proceedings that were brought.  They didn’t.  The story only came up now, after the settlers went on a rampage and needed something, anything to deflect criticism from their OWN sexually aberrant acts.  This only goes to show that when Israeli Jews sexually abuse women it’s somehow excusable as long as the cause which it serves is “just,” but when Arabs do the same (and even when they don’t) it’s a tool to exploit to smear and humiliate them and their cause in the eyes of the world.

All that one can say on behalf of this tissue of lies is that they at least allowed Rifai a few words at the conclusion of the story after the damage had been done (not just to the farmer, but to Yisrael HaYom itself).  He said the entire story is a lie and fabrication.  Those are the only true things in the whole story.

It is no accident that whichever source Bibiton relied on in producing this mess deliberately chose to identify a Palestinian guilty of sexual predation.  Because that’s much akin to what the settlers of Anatot inflicted on the Israeli Solidarity activists who came to Yassine’s aid.  Because Anatot’s residents were guilty of sexual abuse, they needed to manufacture a Palestinian guilty of similar crimes who could deflect criticism from their own heinous acts.  It’s quite devious and could’ve been quite successful in blunting criticism of the pogrom had not a diligent Israeli blogger done her homework to expose the lies.

Here’s what I think happened.  The reporter was contacted by a settler resident of Anatot.  Probably one of the Border Police residents who had access to the prison records of Palestinians.  He found a convict with a name that was similar to Rifai’s.  He didn’t bother doing any research to confirm that the record he discovered was the same as the farmer in question.  The information was leaked to Bibiton, which also did no due diligence and published it as truth.

I’d like to think that at least the originator of this lie had some thin reason to associate Rifai with these charges.  The thought that they made the story up out of whole cloth is even more depressing (though certainly possible).

This is beyond despicable and should earn the newspaper an award as the most disgusting piece of charah (“shit”) published in an Israeli newspaper this year.  I doubt it will draw a word of criticism from anyone in the Israeli media (may I be proven wrong).  Though thank God Esti Segel published her own due diligence, which an Israeli activist brought to my attention.

Finally, a commenter at Esti’s blog has the final, hilarious satiric word on Yisrael HaYom.  Hint: there is a play on words below, in which he calls the newspaper, Yisrael Ayom (“Awful Israel”):

I protest in the name of the readers of the wonderful Yisrael Ayom.  We’re speaking of a media source that is unique and innovative, whose like there never was in the whole world.  A newspaper possessing a cosmic bond with the consciousness of Israel’s prime minister (with the proper oversight of Sara Tra-la-la [satiric reference to Sara Netanyahu]).  We’re privileged to learn every morning what our beloved prime minister dreamt the night before.  Shame on those who slander it.

Unfortunately, you learn with a number of Israeli publications and reporters not to trust anything until you can verify it independently.  Israeli readers, especially those of the right-wing media are often not even aware that what they read is utterly lacking in credibility.  I’ll have to ask my Israeli friends what the Hebrew equivalent of “buyer beware” is.  It holds true about too much Israeli journalism.

Adelson, Lauder Compel Israel’s Channel 10 to Apologize for Unflattering Profile of Gambling Tycoon

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Israel’s Channel 10 is considered one of the most bold and independent among the nation’s TV channels.  It’s the one which airs Tzinor Layla, where I’ve appeared several times.  As part of its reporting, it aired an extremely unflattering profile (segment begins at 20:30 of video) of gambling tycoon and Likud Party sugar daddy Sheldon Adelson.  Libel laws in Israel are less protective of free speech than in this country and Adelson threatened to sue.  Lawyers for both parties sat down to negotiate a settlement.  When they presented a draft to Adelson he tore it up and wrote his own.

I’ve watched the report and while it’s extremely unflattering, if he threatened a lawsuit in the U.S. in my unlawyerly opinion he’d be laughed out of court.

None of that mattered to Adelson. He had an ace in the hole.  The station’s main shareholder is Ronald Lauder, a fellow right-wing pro-Israel Republican and Likud supporter.  Lauder told station management they had to air the apology.  It is scheduled for airing Friday night at 8PM.

The TV channel’s cave-in has caused a mass protest among station personnel.  The news director resigned.  The editor of program also resigned.  The program presenter is considering following suit.  One wonders whether Channel 10′s brand can survive after losing such key personnel.

I’d like to support Channel 10 in whatever way we can.  If readers can dig up any e mail address or corporate phone numbers of companies owned by Lauder either in the U.S. or Israel, I’d be grateful.  Let’s innundate him with support for his brave employees, upholding values of a free press and free speech:

Estée Lauder Inc.
Corporate Headquarters
767 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10153
212-572-4200

I’d also like you to send messages of support to Channel 10 CEO Yossi Warshavsky (here’s the station’s Facebook profile). It’s possible the money-bags may yet relent when faced both with an employee revolt and mass public support for station personnel and journalistic integrity.

Sheldon Adelson is one of the most imperious, controlling and extremist of American Jews.  He is prepared to buy speech in Israel not just to support his causes, but to overwhelm any political opposition to his views.  He is Bibi Netanyahu’s biggest donor and supporter.  He is his patron. He is so right-wing he can’t stand Aipac and that tells you something.  Don’t let Adelson bully Channel 10 into submission.

If anyone can edit and preserve the segment in a suitable video file format in case legal proceedings force Channel 10 to remove it, that’d be great.

After watching the video, I found one portion especially interesting. At one point the Israeli lottery, Mifal HaPayis, intended to build a casino in Mitzpeh Ramon, whose proceeds would benefit the State. Adelson had a competing plan to develop a casino (which was never built) as a private venture in Eilat. The developer of the Mifal HaPayis project recounts how Adelson approached him, asking him to abandon his project in favor of Adelson’s. When he refused, Adelson approached then the Treasury Minister, Bibi Netanyahu. In that one meeting, Bibi changed his view 180 degrees from supporting Mifal HaPayis to supporting Adelson.

The interviewer asked the developer whether he believes that today Adelson could still get Bibi to do something based on a single meeting. Laughing derisively, the man says you wouldn’t even need a meeting: “He could get Bibi to do something by fax, even by SMS!”

About his investment in Yisrael HaYom, he has the chutzpah to say with a straight face:

Our goal is to become the most credible source of information in Israel…I started Israel HaYom to get a fair and balanced view. Competitors complain that it’s a front for Bibi. That’s not true at all.

Yisrael HaYom is even less credible in an Israeli context than Rupert Murdoch is in Britain or New York.

IDF Recruits Congolese to Enforce Occupation, Do Israel’s Dirty Work

Thursday, May 26th, 2011
mkomo twins

Mkomo twins, former Congolese refugees, now enforcing Israel's Occupation of Palestinians (Oren Nachshon)

Not to be outdone by Muammar Qaddafi’s mercenary African army, the IDF too recruits Africans to put the screws to West Bank Palestinians.  Two Congolese twins enlisted in the IDF and were assigned to the Kfir brigade, whose mission is to patrol the West Bank.  Kfir is known as one of the most brutal of IDF units because it operates the checkpoints, performs the late night searches, and generally does the dirtiest work of Occupation.

Yisrael HaYom, Israel’s right-wing daily funded by Sheldon Adelson, proudly profiled the military induction ceremony at the Western Wall for Regis and Jess Mkomo, 21 year-old twins who are Congolese refugees.  Their mother of course is extraordinarily proud of them, saying that they were babies of 4 years when they arrived in Israel and that the country had turned them into ‘real men.’  Men with guns that is.  Which they will undoubtedly use as all the other members of their brigade do to harass Palestinians under Occupation.

She continues:

It does me good to see that the nation believes in them and relies on them and gives them a chance.  It’s also a great honor to the [Congolese] community as this is the first time anyone has [been allowed to] enlist.  This is a good example how the children of foreign workers and refugees can contribute a lot to the nation.

Regis also talks proudly of this opportunity to serve his adopted country:

I am on the way to becoming a soldier and I will fight on behalf of the nation.  I don’t feel different either in the army or in terms of my citizenship.  Israel is my home.  I lived here all my life.

His brother Jess says that he knew almost all his life that he wanted to be a combat solider so he could “defend the nation and defend his mother.”  One of the leaders of the Israeli Congolese community notes that:

African refugees generally have a negative connotation within Israel, but that this proves that we have a good side and a desire to contribute to the State of Israel.  This is a great honor for us.

I wonder whether after beating a Palestinian boy, or speaking harshly to a Palestinian grandmother any hint of the savage irony of their situation will creep into their consciousness.  These boys were plucked from the chaos of the Congo and brought to a different and better life in Israel.  All well and good.  But what does the State do to them (an enterprise they participate in gratefully)?  It turns them into the same sort of brutal soldiers who forced their family into exile in the Congo in the first place.  All of which proves that Israel itself, a nation born at least partly out of the suffering of the Holocaust, can lose its bearings and sense of historical irony.

I only hope that the Mkomo twins will remember this verse from Exodus in the course of their military service while policing the West Bank:

Remember the stranger, for you too were strangers in the land of Egypt.

Palestinians are today’s Israelites, the stranger seeking justice and freedom after decades of bondage under Occupation.  It is a terrible irony that boys who themselves were refugees less than two decades ago will now be enforcing Israel’s will against another degraded people.  What have we done?

Palestinian Attempts to Buy Bankrupt East Jerusalem Real Estate Project, Debtholders and Residents Scandalized

Sunday, January 9th, 2011
nof tzion protest

Rightist protestors' placards: 'Nof Tzion is our (Jewish) home.' 'Jerusalem is Jewish, not Palestinian.' 'Don't sell Jerusalem to Palestinians.'

The East Jerusalem real estate  project known as Nof Tzion has been in deep financial difficult for months.  Then along came a white knight who offered to buy it, invest in it and pay off the outstanding loans of debt holders (at 60 agurot on the shekel).  The buyer’s attorney was Dov Weisglass, former confidant of Ariel Sharon.  All appeared to be glatt kosher.  That is, until the debt holders and residents of Nof Tzion discovered who the lead investor of the Cyprus-based venture was:, Basher Al-Masri, a Palestinian businessman.  Then all hell broke loose:

“This is an essential test of Zionism,” a Nof Zion resident said.  ”It would be the first time that Jewish land would be sold to a Palestinian.”

The irony seems lost to her that the founding of what became Israel was based on the purchase of land (back in the days when Jews actually bought land from Palestinians rather than stealing it) from what were then known as “Arabs.”  What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander, no?  And what does she mean by “Jewish” land?  How can a piece of land be intrinsically Jewish or anything else?  Did God say when he created it that only a Jew could ever own it?

At any rate, pure business, which is what this should deal should be if Israel is based on a capitalist rather than a Jewish cronyist model, seems to have taken a back seat to Jewish jingoism.  Another complicating factor was that one of the partners in the failed venture is the brother of Jerusalem’s nationalist, anti-Palestinian mayor.  It would look bad to the mayor and his political backers for a Jewish venture to be sold to a Palestinian.  A decisive vote on accepting the Palestinian offer has been postponed. And now there are rumors of an American-Jewish white knight whose aim is to torpedo the Palestinian offer.

Whatever racialist motives there were for delaying a vote and proceeding with Al-Masri’s offer weren’t reflected in the buyer’s own statement of his interest and intent:

This is business.  I’m no politician.  But rather a businessman of Palestinian nationality who knows how to work.  If my business benefits my own people, then I feel even better.

What alarms the Jewish investors and residents is that Al-Masri plans to complete the construction of the remaining 300 units in the complex and sell them to middle-class Palestinian buyers.  The Palestinian portion of the development would be separated physically, according to the description offered by Ynet, from the Jewish portion.  One of the fears being bruited about is that if Al-Masri does take over the project he will refuse to sell to Jews out of Palestinian nationalist motives.

No one yet knows the identity of the Jewish investor-spoiler who’s trying to take the project out from under Al-Masri.  There is a rumor that it may be Sheldon Adelson, though I don’t know how much weight to give to it.  Of course, Irving Moskowitz is another possibility though I believe he lives in Israel now and I’m not sure I’d describe him as “American” as the article described the mystery man.

If the Palestinian offer is spurned then I think it becomes impossible to say that Jerusalem isn’t an apartheid city.  If parts of the city are inalienably Jewish and may not be purchased by a Palestinian even under the terms of Israel’s capitalist system, then what else can you call it?

Taglit-Birthright and Birthright Unplugged to Merge

New itineraries for revamped Birthright tours

One of the more riveting and unexpected announcements of this year’s General Assembly (GA) of Jewish federations is that the Taglit-Birthright program has decided to merge with Birthright Unplugged and welcome Jewish and Palestinian youth together to return to their ethnic roots in the Holy Land.  The group, to be renamed Birthright for All (Taglit Le’Kulanu), will adopt the slogan:

Israelis And Palestinians. Two People, One Future.

The new group is the inspiration of Youth Against Delegitimization (YAD), which is sponsored by the Jewish Council of North America (JCNA).  YAD believes that the real way to ensure Israel’s legitimacy is by embracing its identity as a nation of Jews, Muslim and Christians.  Hence the decision to add Palestinian youth and staff to the trips.

It is rumored that hedge fund titan and purported Israel-hater George Soros and Palestinian entrepreneur Sam Bahour engineered a coup, wresting control of Taglit from Sheldon Adelson and Michael Steinhardt, its current neocon funders.  When Soros promised the board that he would triple funding and bring an extra 100,000 Diaspora Jewish youth to Israel, it voted to endorse the radical shift in the group’s mission.

The struggle for control of the group has initiated a free-for-all among other right wing funders, with a rumor that Dr. Irwin Mieskeit, noted bingo king and hospital reseller, is angry at the loss of Birthright as a re-education tool for Diaspora Jewish youth.  He is rumored to be considering founding a competing group to be called, My Birthright Not Yours, which will only visit sites sacred to the settler movement.  Included in this group’s tours will be paramilitary training, personal audiences with Mossad hitmen, briefings with IDF commandos preparing them for their next targeted killing assignment.  Parents of tour participants will even be offered shares in Dr. Mieskeit’s real estate projects which are miraculously transforming East Jerusalem into a Jewish city once again.

In comments offered jointly to Arutz Sheva and New York Jewish Press, Mieskeit is reported to have said about the new group:

A bruch on them, we can never support this Birthright fraud nor an effort to bring a more balanced view of Israel.  Who needs balance?  We know right from wrong.  We’re right, they’re wrong.  With those Birthright shmegegees, the next thing you know they’ll be talking about Nakba and Palestinian suffering, wah, wah, wah.  Crocodile tears.  That’s what it is.

Look, let’s be honest.  A little Holocaust trauma goes a long way when you’re trying to steal the land of another people.  I’m not above making Jewish girls cry if it helps me buy the Shepherd Hotel for a song and a dance.

Birthright tours under the old regime were noted for making shidduchs and producing new Jewish couples to take their place proudly on the stage of Jewish history.  Dr. Mieskeit invoked a hidden fear of many Jews thinking about sending their children on intimate tours with Palestinians:

We’ve already got enough Jews marrying out.  Do we need those Palestinian boys shtupping our girls, knocking them up and producing little half-breed Jewrab babies?

Returning to Birthright for All–now, for the first time the program will be open to Palestinian youth as well, enabling them to rediscover their connections to the land of their forebears.  Instead of avoiding the Territories as previous Birthright tours did religiously, the new tours will include travel throughout Israel and the Territories.  In a first, the new Birthright proposes to visit both settlements and their next door neighbor Palestinian villages.  While a Birthright for All spokesperson said that tour participants may help with the Palestinian olive harvest, insurance and legal liability will prevent any of the young people from participating in the pogroms sponsored by the settler youth.

Here is a statement from the new organization about its goals:

Taglit Lekulanu will introduce a more realistic perspective on Israel by exposing participants to both Jewish and Palestinian narratives. The trip will be open to Palestinian and Jewish Americans and staffed by both Jews and Palestinians.

The trip will bear witness to the occupation, spending a morning with MachsomWatch at West Bank checkpoints and taking tours around the Separation Wall and Hebron. There will also be meetings with Palestinian human rights activists and a visit to Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem.

Inside Israel, meetings with IDF officers and Jewish Agency representatives will be complemented by meetings with Israeli anti-occupation activists and civil rights organizers struggling for equal rights for Israel’s Palestinian citizens. Participants will also visit unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev and learn about the social struggle of Arab Jews. And of course there will be time to explore Tel Aviv’s famed nightlife and shopping.

Make sure they tell ‘em about all the real estate opportunities available in Jaffo through evicting poor Arabs from their run down apartments, tearing ‘em down, and turning ‘em into luxury condos for white Jews.  This way they can realize their Zionist dreams of rebuilding the homeland while making a handsome profit at the expense of the lowly and downtrodden Arab usurpers.  That oughta keep ‘em comin’ back for more…

Note: Events related above may or may not take liberties with fact.  They certainly bear a greater resemblance to truth, at least as I see it.
