Aussie Dave Exposed

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

UPDATE: The judgments I made in this post were based on a hoax perpetrated by David Lange aka Aussie Dave.  Unfortunately, I didn’t detect that he was playing me and I published a fraudulent identity Lange had created.  Thankfully though, after he published a post bragging about the deception, an ace researcher uncovered Lange’s real identity which I posted about here.

For those who have a long memory here, one of my earliest prolonged blogging battles was with a far-right wing Islamophobic Australian-Israeli blogger who used the pseudonym, Aussie Dave and wrote an especially putrid blog, Israellycool. Originally, I went head to head with him over his Jewish blogging contest which he organized under the sponsorship of the Jerusalem Post. In taking him to task for the far right wing nature of the vast majority of the blogs nominated, I earned his eternal enmity. He’s now organizing a new version of the contest, the Pro-Israel Blog-Off, for only the farthest right of pro-Israel blogs.  To ensure the Zionist ideological kashrut of the project, the judges include the CEO of the pro-Israel media advocacy group, Honest Reporting (“Honest” should be in square quotes) and “the Embassy of Israel in Dublin.”  Don’t ask how an entire embassy can judge a blogging contest.  The nominees are a very veritable hate-fest of the right-wing Anglo-Israeli blog world including CIF Watch, Elders of Ziyon, My Right Word, etc.

Ever since the days of his first contest, he’s taken every chance he could to attempt (invariably unsuccessfully) to shame, embarrass, humiliate or insult me. I won’t go into the specifics since they’re so puerile and sophomoric.  Davey has threatened to sue me and warned me that he was a lawyer. But somehow, being the bully he is, he talked a good game never following through. I’ve always wondered why he refused to reveal his real identity, especially since he’d published my home address, phone number and my wife’s employer name and work phone at his blog. It seemed especially hypocritical under the circumstances.

David Loeb's Facebook profile

Now, due to a sloppy error on his part (thanks to an eagle-eyed Israeli who finds him as repellant as I, who caught it), Aussie Dave has exposed his real identity. And since I believe that hypocrites deserve their comeuppance and that their dark secrets deserve to see the light, I’m exposing him for what and who he is: David Loeb, 23 Rashi Street Beit-Shemesh, Israel. In his Facebook profile he notes some sort of affiliation with Virgin Megastores, which may mean he works there. If anyone knows, I’d like to find out.

Commenters note that Loeb has featured a picture of a U.S. basketball player for his profile photo which makes that as fake as the rest of him and his blog is.  He also might’ve considered that featuring his blog’s URL in his Facebook profile would be another dead giveaway to his real identity.

The last straw that determined my decision to expose him was his feeble attempt to link me to a couple from my home city sharing my last name, who were charged with welfare fraud. Loeb hoped at the very least that the cheat might be my brother or some other close relative. It’s bad enough when they implicate me personally in their scummy revenge fantasies. But when they attempt to ensnare innocent family members, that goes too far.

So Dave, I’m throwing you the coming out party you so richly deserve. Enjoy your moment the sun. Now that you’ve been outed you won’t have any more protection than the rest of us, who blog under our own name, have. I daren’t believe it will make you any more responsible or any less bilious. You and leopards, after all, cannot change your spots.

NOTE ABOUT CHANGES TO COMMENTING: I’ve been innundated by spam lately and disappointed that the Akismet anti-spam plugin, which had been doing a great job, began to perform so shoddily.  I’ve implemented a new system that requires commenters to check boxes before their comment is sent to the queue.  I didn’t want to implement a Captcha plugin because I thought that was too intrusive.  I hope this is a reasonable compromise.  If you find anything hinky about the changes or the way the new plugin works, let me know.

Israeli Hasbara Minister Edelstein Patrols Park Slope’s Mean Streets on Lookout for BDS and Delegitimizers

Sunday, December 11th, 2011
yuli edelstein & avi posnick

Israeli minister Yuli Edelstein (l.) & Standwithus' Avi Posnick (r.) at Park Slope food coop patrolling Brooklyn's mean streets

…We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas…would carry on the struggle…

Winston Churchill

yuli edelstein

Edelstein "buys Israel"

The residents of upscale Park Slope (Brooklyn) will no doubt feel reassured that Israel’s Hasbara Minister, Yuli Edelstein, traveled all the way from the State of the Jews to defend the good citizens from the depredations of the BDS movement seeking to turn the neighborhood’s food coop into a Judenrein bastion of the Delegitimizers.

Readers of this blog will know that the Israeli government, its U.S.-based diplomatic personnel, and its water-carriers in this country, Standwithus, have joined in a lawfare-style campaign to harass and intimidate the Olympia food coop, which endorsed BDS a few months ago and removed nine Israeli products from its shelves.  Channel 10′s Tzinor Layla interviewed deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon about the lawsuit and he confirmed that it was part of a concerted campaign by the government to fight BDS even if it meant taking American companies to court to do so.  SWU’s website even documented the effort to target Olympia and Park Slope and any other company that dared to entertain thoughts of divesting their shelves of Israeli products.  In the Pacific NW the SWU campaign is directed by the Israeli consul general, Akiva Tor and SWU director, Rob Jacobs.

In Park Slope, the SWU operative is Avi Posnick.  He is a Long Island native and Yeshiva University graduate who rose through the SWU campus program.  He seems to derive from the Orthodox Jewish community’s pro-Israel nationalist nexus.

Though an article in the local JTNews here in Seattle intimated that in the Olympia lawsuit the complainants were being represented pro bono, Ayalon’s interview statements inferred that either the government was funding the lawyer’s fees or it was helping to arrange for those fees to be paid by related parties (possibly wealthy American Jewish pro-Israel donors).

Why was Yuli Edelstein walking Park Slope’s mean streets seeking out anti-Israel villains to combat?  Because the food coop offered (but did not sponsor) its facilities for a program, Images of Palestine, about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  SWU no doubt got wind of the program from anti-BDS coop members patrolling the organization’s bulletin boards and website for any hint of delegitimization.

Palestinian activist Phan Nguyen received this e-mail from a coop member who attended the education program:

“Afterwards a crowd of men formed a circle and chatted with Barbara Mazor [a prominent anti-BDS person at the Co-op].  Most but not all were in business suits & yarmulkes [and] had not attended our talk.  At peak, there were 15 people in a sidewalk clump outside the coop.  After chatting happily and amicably for nearly an hour, several of them broke off and piled into a scary new black SUV with a driver, followed by a late-model black sedan with two security types in it.  When asked who the VIP was, one of the remaining men on the sidewalk first joked that it was ‘your man, Barack Obama,’ and refused to say more.  But eventually another of them claimed convincingly that the VIP was ‘somebody from the embassy,’ which I assume means the consulate.”

Actually, the intimidating crowd was composed of Israel’s Minister of Hasbara, Yuli Edelstein, an ultra-nationalist settler and Standwithus’ local director, Avi Posnick.  They knew what others residents of Park Slope could barely discern, that if you didn’t fight this evil on the beaches, in the hills and alleys and on the stoops in a house-by-house campaign to rid your neighborhood, you would fall down a slippery slope into the clutches of the Israel haters and delegitimizers.

Barbar Mazor knows this.  That’s why, no doubt, if there is ever a vote in favor of BDS at the food coop, she and Avi Posnick will join together with New York’s Israeli consul general to sue the coop for having the unmitigated chutzpah to express their political opinions about the Israeli Occupation.  She’s such a pro-Israel groupie, and so impressed by her brush with greatness that she entitled her post about the encounter, The Minister and Me.

The Jewish Forward recently profiled SWU on its 10th anniversary and noted that if it receives any direct funding from the Israeli government it should be registering as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Act.  Of course, it hasn’t done so.  But whether or not there is direct financial funding, the two entities are virtually joined at the hip.  There is virtually no difference or separation between the two.  This is an issue that requires further research.

Haaretz’s trusty government stenographer, Barak Ravid, recounted the event inaccurately in an article recently:

One example is the story of “Park Slope Food Co-op,” a Jewish supermarket located in Brooklyn, situated in one of the most “Jewish” areas in the United States. Every week, hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists assemble near the entrance, where one can purchase Israeli goods such as Bamba, Milky, and hummus, and call for a general boycott of the store.

As Phan notes in his e-mail to me, there’s nothing “Jewish” about the coop since it’s open to membership for anyone, even an Arab or, God forbid, a Palestinian.  Yes, Park Slope is considered a Jewish neighborhood though it is quite a diverse place whose residents run the gamut of almost all ethnic groups living in New York City.  ”Hundreds” of pro-Palestinian activists” don’t assemble at the site ever.  Rather, a few members distribute flyers on an irregular basis.  No one is calling for a boycott of the store.  In fact, since only members can shop there, it would be foolish for members to support a boycott of their own store.  Finally, Bamba and Milky are not sold at the coop and hummus, contrary to Ravid’s and Edelstein’s rather insular viewpoint, are not “Israeli goods.”  Someone should tell Barak there’s nothing like a little good old-fashioned reporter’s shoe leather to do a bit of work and check the information offered you by your government sources with actual members of the food coop who can confirm or deny your sources’ claims.  No doubt Ravid doesn’t care whether his reporting has any credibility among people who really know what he’s talking about.  But a good reporter would.  What does that make Ravid?

Edelstein’s efforts were part of the Israeli government’s “Buy Israel Week” festivities.  Imagine an Israeli minister comes all the way to our shores to ensure that we Americans know to do what we’re supposed to do–buy Israel.  Edelstein doesn’t visit businesses like aerospace or high-tech where there’s real commercial prospects to sell Israeli products.  Instead he’s visiting supermarkets to make sure we can still buy Israeli hummus.  Don’t know about you, but as a Jew and someone who cares about Israel, it warms the cockles of my heart that there’s some Israeli out there doing this sort of dirty work for us.  Raymond Chandler would be proud to know that down these mean streets of Brooklyn walks an Israeli:

“…Who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. He is the hero, he is everything. He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor, by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it. He must be the best man in his world and a good enough man for any world.”

I know that in my heart of hearts Yuli Edelstein is such a man.  Don’t you?

Palestine Joins Newt’s Ranks of ‘Invented Peoples’…Along With Israel (1948), America (1776), Germany (1870)

Friday, December 9th, 2011

In an interview with the Jewish Channel, Newt Gingrich’s brain once again outsmarts his mouth, as he spouts serial inanities about the Palestinians. Among them the old Joan Peters/Israeli nationalist canard that Palestinians are “an invented people.”

Right. In the same sense that Americans were an invented people in 1776, and Israelis were an invented people in 1948, and Germany was an invented people before Bismarck came along circa 1870 and united a bunch of disparate city states and principalities into a German nation (not to mention Italy which underwent the same transformation during roughly the same period through the inspiration of Garibaldi).

Further, what do we think Pharaoh thought of the idea of an “Israelite people” just before they fled his kingdom at the Red Sea for freedom and a passage to the Promised Land? Personally, I think it’s quite apt to think of Newt Gingrich and Pharaoh in the same vision. And as for the other guy, who was Moses in the history of the Palestinian people, but Yasir Arafat. Yes, I know all the unsavory things people can say about Arafat, and some of them may even be true. But for every vice of Arafat’s I bet Pharaoh could’ve found one or two to describe Moses.

Some of you may not like this historical analogy and I didn’t wholly invent it myself. That distinction goes to Shamai Leibowitz, who argued in defense of Marwan Barghouti in an Israeli court, that the latter was as much a freedom fighter for his people as Moses was for ours. Hey, just remember, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

In short, modern history is replete with examples of nations and peoples that didn’t exist, especially in the minds of their enemies, until a leader or set of leaders came along to turn a concept into reality. There is nothing sacred or permanent about the concept of nation-formation. It is an evolving process in which nations are born or disintegrate and die depending on historical circumstance and the sense of internal cohesion inside a society. That should be a warning to Israel and its slack-brained supporters like Gingrich. Nations can outlive the logic that brought them into being. They can collapse and fade away. That should be a warning to Israel to pay attention to its internal contradictions, social conflicts, as well as its ongoing hostilities with its neighbors. Nations are not forever.

Israeli kingdoms were destroyed not once, but twice. Not to mention the Midrash that states that the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans was brought about not so much by Roman strategy or superiority, but by the senseless hatred of two brothers who undermined the Judean cause.

Caveat Israel. Not to mention beware Republican presidential candidates bearing pro-Israel “gifts.”

UPDATE: Newt’s handler attempted to do damage control and not allow his Middle East views stray too far to the right of the already right-wing Republican reservation.  He affirmed that Newt was in favor of a peace deal between the formerly-invented Israeli people (1948) and recently-invented Palestinian people.  As to his claim that the Palestinians are an “invented” people: it was all a big mixup.  Newt was proffering his superior skills at historical analysis and his insights simply were misapprehended by his audience, who didn’t quite rise to his level of genius.

Twitter impersonator

Twitter impersonation account featuring link to Israellycool

I wanted my readers to know that in addition to the blog posts I publish here, there is much short-form activism which I find more appropriate to post on Twitter or Facebook.  I encourage you to subscribe to my Twitter &/or Facebook feeds, where you’ll find material and research which doesn’t make it to this blog.

As an example, yesterday I discovered that David Brotsky (who goes by the pseudonym David Appletree and is the mover and shaker beding the Jewish Internet Defense Force), created a Friendfeed “Traitor” list of Jews who “seem” to support Hamas (not sure what that word “seem” means exactly) or those who voted for “anti-Israel” nominees in the Shorty Awards.  Thankfully, I was included in the Traitor list along with some of my friends and allies like Max Blumenthal, and others whose politics I find disappointing like the New Israel Fund, J Street.

JIDF arrogages to itself the critical mission of hacking into social networking and Wikipedia accounts of individuals Brotsky (who refers to himself often as “we,” as he either considers himself divine, royal, or the leader of a mass movement) deems traitors or enemies of Israel.  In a Twitter debate last night he even tried to make the argument that being a traitor to the Jewish people is worse than being a Jewish settler terrorist (I’ll spare you the argument, you can imagine how compelling it was).  My argument was, of course, that a settler terrorist betrays Judaism and the Jewish people far more profoundly.  Brotsky’s is a role without which Israel surely would be destroyed and undoubtedly he’s saving the Jewish homeland and world Jewry in performing this vital task.

let my 1,500 Twitter followers know about this proud news of achieving the distinction of being labelled a “Traitor,” only to have no other than the manly Zionist man himself, @JIDF reply.  His mendacious tweets calling me a supporter of Hamas and anti-Israel traitor drew in a mega-minyan worth of pro-Israel trolls, one of whom told me, literally to “shut up.”  Now, what can the only proper reply to such infantilism be?  I momentarily sank down to their level and replied: “Nyah, nyah make me.”

The next thing I knew, there was a Twitter troll account, whose spelling was a single letter removed from my actual account nickname, and which had stolen my image.  The impersonator had actually wasted his time by following 96 other Twitter accounts including those of individuals who reported what he’d done.  The fake account linked to another of the champions of right-wing Israel, Israellycool.  This is the guy who permitted a commenter at his site to publish my home address and my wife’s work and phone numbers.  You get an idea of the sleaze of which these people are capable.

As soon as the fake account was created it appeared to disappear.  I’m guessing that either Israellycool was worried that his association with the account might jeopardize his own Twitter account, or there may be someone on the other side with half a conscience who told the idiot to cease and desist (this possibility is unlikely).

Add to this vandalism, attempts by Israeli hackers to penetrate my Paypal account and use click fraud to get my Google Adsense account cancelled, and you have further evidence of what these junior pogromists are capable.

All of this offers all the more reason for my readers to support this work in every way they can, including by donations via the Paypal button in my sidebar.  And join my Twitter or Facebook feeds to enjoy the full Tikun Olam experience!

Jewish Community Heroes Competition Violates Own Rules in Barring Surasky

Cecilie Surasky: one Jew too hot (politically) for the Jewish federations to handle

Several days ago, the Jewish Federations of North America unceremoniously and without explanation dumped Cecilie Surasky from it’s  Jewish Heroes competition, where she was running neck and neck with Chabad Rabbi Manis Friedman, whose claim to fame is that he told Moment Magazine he supported the killing of Palestinian civilians in war.

JTA now provides a justification for JFNA’s inexplicable behavior. A staff member explained, though this is nowhere specified in the online page devoted to the rules for the competition, that the poll is meant to support Israel and since JVP allegedly supports BDS, that makes Cecilie treif:

“A central value of The Jewish Federations of North America is to support Israel, and the Jewish Heroes rules preclude us from accepting any nominees whose aims run counter to that mission,” Joe Berkofsky, the Federations’ managing director of communications, said in a statement.

“Our Israel Action Network is working to challenge the boycott, sanctions and divestment movement and other efforts to isolate and weaken the Jewish state. We cannot therefore support a group that seeks to harm Israel through its support for BDS.”

Here are the rules as specified on the Heroes website:

…This is our opportunity to celebrate the individuals who dedicate their lives to helping others…

We encourage you to nominate Heroes from all walks of life—the neighbor running nonprofit bake sales, a volunteer who serves the elderly at a local retirement home, a teacher building a school for the underserved, the community organizer bringing people together.

The essential criteria [for winning] will be:

  • The nominee shows exceptional qualities and commitment in line with the mission of The Jewish Federations of North America, strengthening the Jewish community, and the ideals of tikkun olam.
  • The nominee complies with the rules of the Jewish Community Heroes campaign.

Nothing about BDS.  Nothing about Israel.  Nothing about any political issue.  As far as the rules are concerned it’s an open competition.

So the JFNA statement offered to JTA is a nice bit of ex post facto hocus pocus, which is unworthy of any fair or reputable non profit organization. In fact, if she’s up for it I’d urge Cecilie to consider convening a Beit Din to adjudicate her complaint. It’s outrageous to prepare rules for a competition, and when something undesirable happens you change the rules in the midst of the voting.

In fact, what this PR flack is arguing is that there is an additional layer of unstated rules to which the candidates and competition have to adhere, that is, the Federation’s values (themselves unstated) which support Israel and oppose BDS.

I have stopped giving to my local Jewish federation for various reasons that are more economic than philosophical. But this schande doesn’t persuade me to change my mind.

One thing that does shock me is that no one has nominated any one from Stand With Us. Doesn’t the Jewish community believe that the group is doing heroic work on Israel’s behalf?

There are two good candidates in the running who I’ve voted for and would recommend. Though perhaps saying this publicly may even get my individual vote disqualified. They are Max Blumenthal and Rabbi Stuart Light.  The Republican Jewish Coalition has gotten wind of this and will likely torpedo Max’s candidacy as well.  I guess Cecilie and Max can’t be Jewish heroes in the insular world of Jewish federations.  Yet another reason why the organized Jewish community is rendering itself increasingly irrelevant.

A warning is also in order, voting in the Heroes competition will automatically add you to its mailing list.  There seems no option for opting out of it, which seems annoying.

Yesterday, I used Cecilie’s treatment at the hands of JFNA as a perfect example of how the affiliated Jewish community is circling the wagons and choosing only to deal with those within the increasingly narrow band of political consensus.  Instead of reaching out to all Jews who care about being Jewish and including them wherever possible, the Jewish leadership uses litmus tests to determine who’s worthy of entrance to the Holy of Holies of Jewish life.  This sort of thing turns Jews off, especially young Jews who look at our community and wonder why they should be involved at all.  In their world, there is so much freedom and openness to affiliate with whoever you want, to learn about any ideas you like, to consort with any person you find interesting.  How’re you keep these young Jews down on the farm after they’ve seen Paris, to quote an old WWI slogan?

Unfortunately, we Jews have a long history of banishing those who violate community standards.  The Jews of Amsterdam did it to one of the greatest philosophers in history, Baruch Spinoza.  But cherems don’t work these days.  There are too many options for Jews to choose from outside the community.  If you don’t want these Jews, they’ll go somewhere else and leave you alone crying in your beer about why all the good Jews are opting out, marrying out, etc.

I’ve reviewed JVP’s policies concerning BDS and it very specifically does not include support of any action that would harm Israel directly (or even indirectly for that matter).  It supports only divestment from, and boycott of companies that support or sustain Israel’s Occupation.  That is all.

Breivik’s Neo-Nazi Manifesto, Latter-Day Mein Kampf

2083 a European Declaration of Independence

Title page of Breivik's manifesto

Hitler had his Jewish problem. Anders Breivik, his Muslim problem. The more I read of Breivik’s manifesto, A European Declaration of Independence, the more it appears to me a latter-day version of Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

Remember that when the dictator-to-be wrote his magnum opus he had not yet devised the formula for the Final Solution. He knew what the problem was (Jews) and had some ideas about how to deal with it, but he hadn’t come up with the policy of genocide adopted at the 1942 Wansee Conference. So Breivik sees clearly that the problem for Europe is Muslims (rather than Jews). They are the common “foreign” body infecting the pure western European gene pool. But Breivik hasn’t yet developed a genocidal policy to accompany this realization. He only states that Muslims must be removed from Europe (and the western world, including Israel), not that they must be exterminated.

But given that Breivik forecast that his right-wing revolution would not succeed till 2083, we can only wonder at what sort of Final Solution there would be for the Muslim problem in Europe by then.

While Breivik’s views in one major particular diverge from those of Hitler, in many other ways they mirror each other precisely. As for the difference, Breivik only sees SOME Jews as the problem. Those are the Marxist Jews in the Diaspora and Israel, the ones embracing multiculturalism. They are the enemy. But the Norwegian neo-Nazi views Zionist Israel, as represented by anti-jihadis like Avigdor Lieberman, as what he calls “cultural cousins.” Israel is the far-right’s friend in this view because this is a nation that hates Islam and will expel the Muslims living within it.

Interestingly, John Hagee’s views of Jews and Israel are very similar.  Hagee too believes that secular Jews and Jewish political leftists are the enemies of Christianity and the ones who will die in the End Times.  Israel, that is Zionist Israel living out the Biblical dream, will survive in his world view.  They will be the saving remnant, and of course the group that will eventually turn to accept Jesus as Christ.  Hagee’s best friends in Israel, the settlers and political leaders like Avigdor Lieberman, are precisely the ones admired most by Breivik.

Hitler too railed against Jewish Bolsheviks and saw them as the heart of all evil. Perhaps had Hitler lived to see the creation of the State of Israel he too might’ve modified his views about Jews (or conversely, had Hitler lived there might never have been a State of Israel). At any rate, Muslims play the same role Jews did for Hitler in the Breivik universe. They are the irredeemably evil.

But interestingly, while Hitler chose to attack Jews unmercifully almost from the beginning of his political career, Breivik chose not to attack Muslims physically at all. Instead, he chose to attack the heart of the ‘Marxist multicultural’ beast, Norway’s ruling party and institutions of state. To his mind, the rightist revolution would resonate most with an attack on the soft underbelly of the state, rather than on the nation’s Muslims.  For Breivik, Marxists like those of the Norwegian Labor Party and the hated European Union, are collaborators with the Muslim enemy.  The former are the ones who will enable to latter to overrun Europe.  And because these collaborators are white Christians like himself, they are race traitors.  All of which probably justifies attacking them, before going on to ‘getting the job done’ against Muslims.  Here is his underlying thinking on the subject:

Why armed resistance against the cultural Marxist/multiculturalist regimes of Western Europe is the only rational approach

Multiculturalism, like drugs, is an insidious weapon. Both destroy the heart and fabric of a people. All ties to family, community, and one’s people as a whole are destroyed by these two opiates of the human mind. Both are sponsored from the top down by one world elitists bent upon creating a world order who’s power is such that its subjects posses no potential for resistance.

…War or armed resistance has traditionally always been used as a last resort, when dialogue has proven to ineffective. The justification for use of armed resistance against the European cultural Marxist/multiculturalist systems is tied to the outlook for cultural conservative political success. You have to ask yourself; is it remotely possible under the current conditions that a conservative, monocultural political party will ever gain substantial political influence? An increasing number of Europeans are opening their eyes to the reality that the democratical struggle through dialogue has been lost. The cultural Marxists have institutionalised multiculturalism and have no intention of ever allowing us to exercise any political influence of significance. In theory we, the cultural conservatives of Europe, have become slaves under an oppressive, tyrannical, extreme left-wing system with absolutely no hope of reversing the damage they have caused. At least not democratically..

Breivik made common cause with other European far-rightist groups like the English Defense League (whose name may be a deliberate echo of the Jewish Defense League), Geert Wilders and others. One factor that they all share is pro-Israelism. For them, the enemy of my (Muslim) enemy is my friend. That’s precisely why Pam Geller, Robert Spencer, Daniel Pipes, Bat Yeor and other Jewish anti- jihadis find the European far-right so attractive. And it’s a reason why all of them are so dangerous. Not in the way that Breivik is physically dangerous. But intellectually and politically dangerous.  Scott Shane wrote an interesting story about this today in the Times.

The Norwegian mass-murderer may’ve killed regardless of whether Geller et al. existed. But his certitude in his cause and the intellectual underpinnings of it come from them. Without them, he may’ve just been a malcontent searching for a cause. With them, he had a cause to live and die–and kill others–for.

Yesterday, I identified a number of interesting quotations from the Breivik manifesto and excerpted them in a post.  I’ve continued my review and there are several more quotations I’d like to offer.  This deals with the issue of expulsion of Muslims from Europe with a clear parallel to the policy of transfer advocated by Israeli nationalist rightists (including Lieberman, though in a slightly more refined articulation).  The call to action that concludes it is chilling and reveals that all that separates Breivik from Geller, Spencer et al. is the former’s willingness to take up arms, while the the latter do everything but:

Future deportations of Muslims from Europe

“It’s difficult to discuss deportation of Muslims openly in a society where it is not even allowed to discuss Islam…”

The reason why authors on the Eurabia related issues/Islamisation of Europe – Fjordman, Spencer, Ye’or, Bostom etc. aren’t actively discussing deportation is because the method is considered too extreme (and thus would damage their reputational shields). This would un-doubtfully undermine their work and probably disallowing them to publish any future books. However, the warning about Islam has been repeated for more than two decades and it is apparent that 40 more years of dialogue, without action, would have a devastating effect on Europe. If these authors are to scared to propagate a conservative revolution and armed resistance then other authors will have to.

Here Breivik outlines the need to rid oneself of the human impulse for mercy in this Christian conservative revolutionary jihad.  This passage distills his method to its pure essence:

The process of destroying and replacing the current cultural Marxist/ multiculturalist regimes of Western Europe will not be easy or painless….

As a Justiciar Knight you are operating as a jury, judge and executioner on behalf of all free Europeans. Never forget that it is not only your right to act against the tyranny of the cultural Marxist/multiculturalist elites of Europe, it is your duty to do so.  There are situations in which cruelty is necessary, and refusing to apply necessary cruelty is a betrayal of the people whom you wish to protect.

The preferred method is to attack in a violent and deceptive form (shock attack), usually with limited forces (1-2 individuals).  Once you decide to strike, it is better to kill too many than not enough, or you risk reducing the desired ideological impact of the strike. Explain what you have done (in an announcement distributed prior to operation) and make certain that everyone understands that we, the free peoples of Europe, are going to strike again and again. Do not apologise, make excuses or express regret for you are acting in self-defence or in a preëmptive manner. In many ways, morality has lost its meaning in our struggle. The question of good and evil is reduced to one simple choice. For every free patriotic European, only one choice remains: Survive or perish. Some innocent will die in our operations as they are simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. Get used the idea. The needs of the many will always surpass the needs of the few.

In a subsequent passage, Breivik notes that the number of acceptable dead in this revolutionary coup d’état would be 45,000 (with 1-million wounded), which corresponds, in his delusional mind, to the numbers that the Marxist political élite have killed in their drive for continental dominance.  He notes that some conservatives also include in the number of those killed aborted fetuses, which raises the number to 2-million.

In this terrorist’s universe, the goal of overturning the Eurabian regime justifies use of weapons of mass destruction including chemical and biological weapons, which he goes to great lengths to specify.  He even speculates on the possibility of negotiating with Israel (noting that Israeli nationalists would be most likely to be sympathetic to his cause) for access to nuclear weapons though he concedes that Israel is unlikely to do so until it sees clear signs that his revolution is nearing success.

Seattle Metro Bus Ad Controversy: King County Suspends Free Speech

seattle israel bus ad

Seattle's anti-war bus ads

Like a good general, I have a rule I try to follow about blogging: I try to choose the terrain on which I will fight.  I like the terrain to favor me.  If my opponent chooses to fight on their terrain, I prefer not to engage unless I think it’s favorable to me.  That’s why I’ve declined to enter into the local fracas-become international cause celebre involving a series of Seattle Metro Bus ads which decry U.S. military aid to Israel and accuse it of committing war crimes during Operation Cast Lead.

Before entering this political swamp, let me make something clear: I have no problem with any of the issues raised in the ads, which is why I strongly attack King County executive Dow Constantine’s decision to pull the plug on them after an outcry from a local Israel lobby coalition.  I strongly support the right of the group which organized them to display them.  The issue of U.S. military aid to Israel is an important one as is the even more important issue of possible war crimes committed by the IDF in Gaza during the last war.

But I do have problem with both sides of this debate: both the advertisers and the pro-Israel baying chorus trying to take them down.  First, my problem with the ad.  If you want to make a political point AND influence people you make your argument coherent and plausible.  You don’t flaunt rhetoric.  You don’t score points.  You don’t shout when a calm voice will do.  There are thousands of different iterations of this ad which would’ve worked as effectively and made it harder for the pro-Israel crowd to get the ads taken down.

But the ad organizers went for the jugular.  They made their choice and undoubtedly are happy their ads were banned since it will play well to their constituency.  The other side will think it has won a victory and feel pleased with itself.  What it won’t realize is that any time you have to win a victory at the expense of fundamental constitutional principles of free speech and fairness, you’ve lost in the long run.  Meaning Israel has lost too.  And if your cause is Israel, then you’ve done your cause a disservice.

Now my much more serious problems with the smear campaign run by the local pro-Israel advocates including the Jewish federation, Aipac, American Jewish Committee and Stand With Us.  Here’s some of their rhetoric as mouthed by local King County Councilmember Jane Sprague, who’s dutifully repeating the Israel lobby talking points as all obedient U.S. politicians tend to do:

The ad reads “Israeli War Crimes Your tax dollars at work,” and has an image of a group of children staring at a destroyed building.  . Like many of you, I find the ad disturbing. Yesterday I sent a letter to the Executive and Metro officials demanding that they put a halt the ads…

We need to be mindful that inflammatory speech like this can affect many groups including our Jewish Community. I strongly believe in freedom of speech and our first amendment rights…Messages like these, that lack basic civility, can incite violence against minorities and various religious communities. We need to be able to protect those who can be hurt as a result.

What is “inflammatory” about this speech? That it accuses Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza? Major Israeli newspapers run stories virtually every day recounting stories of Israeli atrocities during the war and using terms like “war crimes” to describe them. Yes, I’d prefer to use terms like “alleged” or “possible” since the war crimes haven’t been proven in a court of law yet. But I find absolutely nothing wrong with putting forward a political argument in such ads claiming that Israel committed war crimes.

Now, as to whether U.S. taxpayers financed those atrocities with U.S. military aid: that seems incontrovertible. Israel’s military has used American weaponry liberally and even flagrantly in situations such as the mass firing of U.S. cluster bombs during the concluding hours of the 2006 Lebanon war, leaving Lebanese civilians to suffer the tragic consequences after the war ended as they unintentionally exploded the ordinance on their property and roads.

As to the ads “lacking basic civility,” well, excuse me but a cluster bomb in your backyard or an F-16 levelling your Gaza apartment building is a pretty uncivil message sent from the American people to Palestinians courtesy of the Israeli Air Force. Do the American people deserve the right to know about such things in bus ads? You bet.

But there is another deeply disturbing notion put forward by pro-Israel advocates in this message: that Israel=American Jews. That Americans somehow blame their fellow Jewish citizens for the acts of Israel. This is not only an offensive concept, it simply isn’t true.  America is not a place in which Jews will be blamed for Israel’s alleged crimes.  I reject this notion.

The anti-ad coalition views Israel and world Jewry as being inseparable, as being joined at the hip. But the vast majority of Jews in the world don’t accept this equation. I am a Jew, not an Israeli. Israel doesn’t speak for me, nor I for Israel. When Israel acts badly, I am not at fault nor do my fellow Americans see as such.

But it is convenient for Stand With Us and the rest of the Israel advocates to claim there is “no daylight” between Israel and us because then they can argue that hostility to Israeli policy=anti-Israelism and even anti=Semitism. Let me point out as clearly as I can: this notion is noxious. It is offensive. I utterly reject it as should all Americans and American Jews who care about Israel.

Israel doesn’t need all Jews to identify with it unconditionally. Israel need to become a normal nation in the Middle East. To do so, it needs to come to terms with its Arab neighbors. Having world Jewry’s identity confused with Israel’s will not help this process. It will indeed poison it. If you want to be a friend to Israel tell it to make peace with its neighbors and not presume all the Jews in the world think everything it does is honky dory.

King County’s executive has done a grave disservice to free speech in suspending these ads. Not only this, he has handed a victory to those sponsoring the ads.  He has given them the high ground. I hope they sue the county and get a judge to rule on this situation. It is really a contract dispute. The County signed a contract and then violated it. Grounds for reneging are specious. Metro approved those ads then took the Mideast Awareness Campaign’s $3,000.  After signing on the dotted line, they want to back out.  I’d love to see this tested in court.

Dow Constantine is a craven political coward.  Read the bullshit that he’s published under the name of the King County government:

“I have consulted with federal and local law enforcement authorities who have expressed concern, in the context of this international debate, that our public transportation system could be vulnerable to disruption.”

…Given the dramatic escalation of debate in the past few days over these proposed ads, and the submission of inflammatory response ads, there is now an unacceptable risk of harm to or disruption of service to our customers should these ads run.”

Yes, ads that are political speech and counter-speech will cause terrorism.  That’s what he’s essentially claiming.  Thank God, this is a view fully rejected by our nation’s Founders.  Speech is speech.  It is not an act and certainly not an illegal act.  What utter nonsense.  To retreat behind the skirts of a nameless federal bureaucrat who supposeldy told him to can an ad.  I want to know: which federal official did he consult and what did he say?  In fact, I’d like to file a Freedom of Information Act petition with Country government for every piece of internal information regarding this ad.  So, Dow Constantine, I’d be careful what you say and make sure it’s the truth.  You wouldn’t want to look awfully stupid if you mouthed nonsense like this, and were caught afterward doing so.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if David Horowitz’s counter ads were deliberately formulated in the most vitriolic terms possible, knowing that by doing so they would virtually force Metro to cancel the original ad, which was their real purpose.  Really, who cares what the counter ads would say as long as they didn’t explicitly advocate illegality or violence?  I’d like to see fools like Horowitz and his ilk voice anti-Muslim views on Seattle buses so the entire city can laugh them out of town.  What’s the cure to bad speech?  More speech.  Not no speech.  What Metro is doing is saying Seattleites are delicate flowers who can’t withstand the furor of political debate.  Somehow they must be protected from opinions that are too hot.  Otherwise, what?  What would happen?  Would the Seattle explode in WTO type riots merely because of a few bus ads?  C’mon.  Who’re they kidding.

You’ve heard conservatives deride the “Nanny State.”  Well, here in Seattle we have the “Nanny County” protecting residents from the bad, bad man saying bad, bad things.  I say let 1,000 flowers bloom.  So what if some are weeds?  A weed here or there won’t kill us.  It’s the garden of debate that is important.

The Terror Industry and Anti-Jihadism, Who Benefits?

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Norman Finkelstein coined the phrase the “Holocaust industry” in his book of the same name, to describe the nexus of Jewish groups, lawyers, politicians, and communal leaders who enrich their power and pocketbook by trumpeting the anti-Semitism threat and causing anxiety and paranoia among world Jewry as a result.  As a result of Finkelstein’s acute analysis, he’s earned outrage and scorn from those in the Jewish community who he has skewered.

For the past decade or more, since the 1990s demise of the Communist “menace” and its accompanying gravy train, neocons have turned to terror as their new bogeyman.  A new Terror Industry has sprung up and it is populated with the usual retired generals (William Boykin), former government officials (Bolton, Gaffney), corporate opportunists (Aubrey Chernick), ideologues and intellectual heavy-lifters (Pipes, Horowitz, Podhoretz, Peretz, Kristol).  Just as the Jefferson’s tree of liberty needed to be fed with the blood of tyrants, so the Terror apparatus needs to be fed with new political fodder.

Such is the effort led by Jewish pro-Israel neocons to turn anti-jihadism into the Terror Industry’s new mantra.

There at the creation was Frank Gaffney’s Center for Security Policy.  You’ll recall that Gaffney was a middle-ranking member of Ronald Reagans’ Defense Department.  As early as 1990, Christopher Hitchens, before he became a parody of himself, wrote in his book, How Neo-Conservatives Perish,  about Gaffney’s prescience in grasping at the need for a new source of political power to replace the decline of Communism.  Since then, he’s become one of the go-to guys for all things hawkish, neocon and pro-Israel among policy wonks.

Today, Matt Duss wrote about a report on alleged American Muslim terror threats which was, I’m embarrassed to say, actually endorsed by three members of Congress.  Among them were Her Looniness Michelle Bachman and Peter Hoekstra, former chair of the House Intelligence Committee.  If you want a sense of what the national security agenda of a new Republican House majority would be read the report, Sharia: The Threat To America.

According to it, the new Muslim bogeyman is Shariah, about which the authors in their Times op-ed say:

Today, the United States faces a similarly insidious ideological threat:Shariah, the authoritarian doctrine that animates the Islamists and their jihadism…

Shariah is the crucial fault line of Islam’s internecine struggle. On one side of the divide are Muslim reformers and authentic moderates…

The other side of the divide is dominated by “Islamists,” who are Muslim supremacists. Like erstwhile proponents of communism and Nazism, these supremacists – some terrorists, others employing stealthier means – seek to impose a global theocratic and authoritarian regime, called a caliphate. On this side of the divide, Shariah is a compulsory system that Muslims are obliged to wage jihad to install and to which the rest of the world is required to submit.

For these ideologues, Shariah is not a private matter. They see the West as an infidel enemy to be conquered, not a culture and civilization to be embraced or at least tolerated. It is impossible, they maintain, for alternative legal systems and forms of government like ours to coexist peacefully with the end-state they seek.

…we need to come to grips with Shariah. Whether pursued through violent jihad or the stealthier techniques the Brotherhood calls “civilization jihad” or dawa (the call to Islam), Shariah rejects fundamental premises of constitutional governance and American society…

Here’s the money quote:

Shariah adherents – including a network of Muslim Brotherhood-connected organizations operating in the United States – are seriously pursuing civilization jihad in this country. Their agenda is about power, not faith…

…The endgame of Islamist ideology is the same whether pursued by terrorists or nonviolent activists: to extort American society into Sharia compliance.

The Sharia Report was sponsored by Gaffney’s CSP, and written by three former Cold Warriors turned anti-jihadis, among them James Woolsey and the National Review’s Andrew McCarthy.  In the Washington Times where he celebrated the release of the report he had the temerity to say that among the Muslims Pres. Obama invites to the White House for Iftar dinners might be members of Al Qaeda.  He’s also notorious for claiming that Pres. Obama “might” still be a Muslim.  He also claims that the current administration has “communicated submission” to America’s enemies.

Duss in his post, has identified an old familiar Jewish extremist face peeking out of the CSP woodwork, its general counsel, David Yerushalmi (ne Beychok).  When last seen in this blog, he had been banished by, of all people, Daniel Pipes for embarrassing the group, Stop the Madrassa (where he also was general counsel), with his ultra-extremist beliefs.  That group was the catalyst for the anti-Muslim backlash that led New York’s mayor and schools chancellor to demand the resignation of Debbie Almontaser, the founding principal of the Muslim charter school, the Khalil Gibran Academy.  She has successfully sued the city under an EEOC suit.

Though trained as a lawyer, Yerushalmi earns his living from the Terror Industry and its new anti-jihadi adjunct.  He has reportedly become Frank Gaffney’s “rabbi” when it comes to the study of Islamism and jihadism.  But where has Yerushalmi learned about Islam?  Does he have a graduate degree, even from as slanted a source as Bernard Lewis?  No.  Did he study Islam with any noted scholars (even non-Muslim)?  Doubtful.  What Yerushalmi has are some half-baked notions he’s either read in a book or developed out of his own paranoiac imagination about the Muslim menace.

Among Yerushalmi’s more wacky views: American Muslims should be confined to concentration camps for the threat they pose of overthrowing the government.  This is a quotation from his website:

The Congress of the United States of America shall declare the US at war with the Muslim Nation.

He and his anti-jihadi Gauleiter, Dave Gaubatz, orchestrated a “sting” against D.C. area local mosques by posing as worshippers and seeking to “out” the imams for their alleged support of jihad and terror.  You’ll recall this is the same Gaubatz whose son posed as an intern while working at CAIR and stole internal organizational documents which dad was hoping would prove CAIR’s commitment to a Sharia overthrow of the U.S. government.  Daddy G. just accepted a legal ruling that he must return the documents which his son had stolen.

Returning to the other Dave (Yerushalmi), giving the vote to African-Americans was a foolish idea.  He calls this “raw” or “liberal democracy” and he’s agin’ it.  Doesn’t think much of Abe Lincoln, either.  Says the Founding Fathers opposed democracy as well.  He may be one of the few Jewish white supremacists around.  He calls Bill O’Reilly a “secular progressive” and of Sean Hannity, he says he ”participates in the destruction of America’s national existence.”

He’s apparently learned a lesson or two about keeping his outlandish views under wraps because his website, SANEWorks (Society of Americans for National Existence), used to be publicly accessible and now is only available to those who pony up the $2,000 subscription fee.

At the press conference which featured the announcement of report, Matt questioned Gaffney about the origin of the notions of Islam found in it.  The former secured a damaging admission from the anti-jihadi wonk:

Noting some of the report’s broad and controversial claims about Islamic law, such as that all Muslims are duty-bound to wage jihad against unbelievers, I asked Gaffney how many actual Muslims or Islamic scholars he and his group had consulted with in writing the report. He could not name any, though he noted that he had consulted with various Muslims “over the years.”

So there you have it. A report on the threat posed by Islamic law to the United States, one of whose leaders admits to having started studying Islam only three years ago, whose authors admit consulting with no actual Muslims, produced by a think tank that has previously claimed that key members of the Obama administration are part of the Iran Lobby.

In short, this is all nonsense.  But it is very dangerous nonsense.  It is nonsense that could easily lead us into war with Iran. And that would be for starters.  These ghoulish hatemongers propose a holy war against 1.4-billion people.  They would have our country in a perpetual state of conflict, a latter-day anti-Muslim Sparta.  As for me, I prefer to be Athens any day.

We must say no to the Terror Industry and their anti-Muslim ideologues.  If they are ascendant in the national political debate, it means the destruction of everything many of us hold dear about this country.  And we’ll say Dick Cheney was a piker by comparison.
