Masada2000: Hate Bites the Dust Once More

Monday, May 21st, 2007

It took eight days, but Masada2000 is down once more. Unfortunately, the site’s Kahanist friends at Jewish Task Force didn’t realize that Bluehost (their latest webhost) was a Mormon hosting company and might be a tad offended at the pornography, nudity and profanity at the site. Maybe next time they should try to find out who hosts sites belonging to the Aryan Nation and American Nazi Party (if there is still such a thing) and ask to be hosted there. One thing’s for certain, they need a hard core host who doesn’t flinch at the 110 proof hate spewed there.

I’d like to thank Bluehost as a company and its CEO, Matt Heaton, for recognizing the danger posed by a site like Masada2000 and the suffering it inflicts on the thousands of innocent Jews it cyber-bullies there.

Tonight, I discovered an extraordinary article, In Defense of Self-Hating Jews, about Masada2000 by Menachem Wecker in Jewish Currents (man, that’s a blast from the past isn’t it?). It provides interviews with many of those featured in the S.H.I.T. List (Self-Hating and Israel-Threatening Jews) and most importantly it thoroughly airs and debunks the poisonous term “self-hating Jew.”

My wife and some progressive friends had recently asked me whether pursuing this site was worth the time it diverted from the truly important work that I try to do here. It’s a worthwhile question and even led me to write an e mail to a JTF forum member suggesting that I’d back off my pursuit of Masada2000 if it would remove my S.H.I.T. listing and if JTF would cease publishing abusive material about me. Then I spent 15 minutes reviewing what JTF forum members had said about me in the past week. Prominent among the comments were “kapo.” “fag,” and a wish that I contract cancer. I decided a sulha with these people was impossible.

And after reading Wecker’s story, it reaffirmed the importance of combating such Jewish hate. No one likes to get their hands dirty in dealing with the slime that oozes from that site. But if it goes unanswered and unfought, then the hate there has an opportunity to slowly seep into the mainstream Jewish discourse.

Masada2000 Spewing Hate Once More Thanks to Jewish Task Force

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

The Jewish Task Force proudly announces they’ve found a right-wing friendly webhost to resume broadcasting the Kahanist spew for which Masada2000 has become notorious. But they’re trying to conceal the name of the webhost to prevent the inevitable complaints about its content:

The new host has explicitly told us that, as long as what we post is within our First Amendment rights, they do not and will not monitor the content. However, I’d still rather not advertise the host and bring them undue pressure.

This of course is public knowledge that becomes known as soon as the domain tool services update their information on the site.

UPDATE: Thanks to W Dean below, we’ve discovered that Bluehost is the proud new webhost for Masada2000. Only took 12 hours! Now, let’s see how Bluehost responds to my complaint.

We should give credit to one webhost which apparently thought better of associating itself with the creepy Masada2000:

Well, apparently we’ve been screwed over by Lunarpages. It’s been a month and a half, they received the yearly payment (in cash), they say that they are checking out some things and to bear with them. But that’s as far as it went. And now they ignore all emails asking why they are ignoring us!

If anyone knows of a web host with a backbone who would be willing to host Masada2000.org, please let me know! It’s time to get it back online!

These guys have been trying to get back online unsuccessfully for two months. I love it! Give credit to Lunarpages for smelling a rat.

Another JTF forum member seems to have a nebulous idea of what constitutes libel:

He has written so many libelous things about her [Neuwirth] and still refuses to retract them. I think she’s got a good case. :-)

God, I wish this ignoramus represented her instead of the counselor she does have. Someone please point out a single thing I’ve written about Rachel that is libelous? Even her attorney didn’t mention libel in his letter.

My S.H.I.T. List entry once again features a copyrighted image of me, thus violating the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Virtually every other image on the is copyrighted either by the owner or surely someone who wouldn’t want the copyright violated by having it displayed on this site. I would urge anyone whose image is featured there, once we discover the webhost (which I will announce here), to file a DMCA notice to the webhost. If they do not take the image down then they have opened themselves up to serious liability.

UPDATE: I guess Masada2000′s site owner does believe in copyright, but only for those who threaten his webhost with a DMCA violation. He’s taken down my image. But left up hundreds of other copyrighted images for which I’m hoping the owners will also make DMCA claims. Furthermore, the site is riddled with countless other egregious violations of the web host’s Terms of Service. Did he bother to read the TOS before going with Bluehost? I doubt it? He relied on the word of a customer service rep who told him that Bluehost doesn’t review site content. We’ll see. But you guys may want to start looking for yet another new host in case the good, pious Mormon folk at Bluehost don’t take too kindly to your spew.

The owner’s made a feeble attempt to make his site kosher by removing the masada2000 reams jewish women. He’s also removed the image picturing me next to a man’s hairy backside. Though we’ve kept images for posterity and to show current or future webhosts the site may attempt to patronize. I can see that Meir K. Shmendrick removes whatever offensive material I describe here. So I’ll stop making such references. Only his webhost will know for sure.

I’m not being sued, not yet. But it will be interesting to see if she goes through with it. Though no one likes being sued, I view the prospect of such a lawsuit as an opportunity to educate the public about the hate spewed by the Rachel Neuwirths and JTF’s of the world. It’s also an opportunity to test whether the judicial system upholds the notion that the internet is an arena that protects free speech and the expression of opinion. And of course if she does sue, she will make the Jewish world wonder what all the fuss is about thus bringing attention to Tikun Olam and its mission.

I knew when Masada2000 was taken down that it would likely go up again and said so. This is a long battle against hate. If you win a battle you haven’t won the war. But ultimately our vision of peace and justice and two states living side by side will win. And the haters will be consigned to the dustbin of history where they belong.

A hat tip to the first reader who can discover who the new Masada2000 webhost is.

Computerworld Interviews Tikun Olam Over Cyberstalking

Friday, April 27th, 2007

My thanks to Mary Brandel for taking up the subject of cyberstalking in today’s Computerworld article, Five Ways to Defeat Blog Trolls and Cyberstalkers (for full page version). She interviewed me at length and we had a comprehensive discussion on the subject. This is a topic that internet free speech absolutists and blogging platforms and hosts don’t take nearly seriously enough. Personally, I think we all need to treat this not just as a free speech issue but as an issue of human dignity, respect and rights.

As I mentioned in the article, I appreciate blogging platforms like WordPress which give their users innovative plugins allowing them to exert more control, if they wish, over the content and tone of their comment threads. Further development of such features should be encouraged by the platforms. Plugin authors are playing a major role in providing the tools to combat blog trolling and other cybermischief.

The latest on my cyberstalker, Steven Plaut. I spoke with Neve Gordon this week about his libel case against the former. Gordon expects the District Court (acting as a court of appeals) to render a verdict in the case which Plaut originally lost. It may come as early as a month from now. I asked Neve whether Plaut had created a fake blog through Blogger as revenge against Gordon’s legal action. As I suspected, Plaut did create one. It isn’t active now, but thankfully it’s preserved through the Internet Archive’s invaluable Wayback Machine. This further confirms Plaut as my cyberstalker fraud blogger since he’s also created a fake Blogger blog about Roland Rance after Rance took an active role in writing the Wikipedia article on Plaut. I find it remarkable that with a pattern of fraudulent behavior such as this that Blogger would continue to stand behind the fig leaf of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

I’ve made clear before here that I understand the importance of Section 230 as a protection for web and blog hosts from third parties who upload illegal material to their servers. But Section 230 shouldn’t give a blank check to such hosts and absolve them of any responsibility to remove vulgar, defamatory material which damages the victim’s psyche and reputation. Just because you’re protected from liability doesn’t mean you aren’t free to use common sense as a host. Bsinet used such common sense in taking down Masada2000. Unfortunately, Blogger takes a more obstinate, unreasonable position.

My brother discovered Google’s public listing of its top five executive officers and one of them, Jonathan Rosenberg, is senior vice president for marketing. I contacted his executive assistant who, on first conversation with me understood the severe annoyance this fake blog caused me and said she hoped there was something that might be done. She asked me to forward all the supporting material to her and she said she’d bring it to the attention of someone at Blogger. Within a few minutes she replied:

…It appears that there is nothing more Blogger can do and you must go after the creator of the website.

Which is of course not true. There is plenty Blogger CAN do; but nothing that it WILL do.

My hope is that if Gordon’s victory is upheld by the Israeli court there would then be a pattern of lawbreaking established. I’ll be querying an Israeli attorney about whether I would have standing to sue Plaut in Israel (or here). If not, we may try to persuade other Israelis who’ve been similarly slandered by Plaut to sue him.

UPDATE: Since originally writing this post, I have learned that an anonymous party claims ownership of the fake blog, furthermore stating that Steven Plaut has not participated in its creation. A reporter tells me Plaut has denied his involvement. So while I have no idea whether the anonymous party is being truthful, it is possible that Plaut is either not involved in the blog, is partially involved, or that the blog claimant is lying and Plaut is fully responsible. I don’t yet know for sure which is the case. My impression of Plaut’s authorship was based on a number of factors, including Mr. Rance’s firm conviction that Plaut was responsible for the separate blog of which he is a victim.

Masada2000 and ‘Neil Pomper’: Kahanists as Sore Losers

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

A Kahanist allegedly named Neil Pomper was the first person to notify me that Masada2000 had a S.H.I.T. listing for me. This led, in turn to my notifyng the site’s host about its content. This in turn led to the site being taken down. After this, I wrote to Neil (if that’s his real name) suggesting that if he’d kept his big mouth shut, his site might still be beaming its hate all over the world.

Apparently, Neil hasn’t been able to get Masada2000 up again. But he’s resorted to the next best thing. Any slime bucket can create a blog at Blogger.com. So he’s impersonated me, and mimicked my name and created this defamatory blog which also infringes on copyrights of two images I own.

I am disappointed that Neil isn’t brave enough to turn on the blog’s comment features so I can send all of my readers there to tell him what a shit he is. It is also possible that “Neil Pomper” is either Rachel Neuwirth or a “good friend” of hers since I’ve tussled with her as well here making her none too happy.

At any rate, a claim of defamation and copyright infringement has been submitted to Blogger’s legal department and a DMCA notice will follow shortly. The site will be down in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. Hopefully, Blogger will monitor Neil’s fecal droppings better the next time he tries this sort of shenanigan. Some people have entirely too much time on their hands and manage to get themselves into tons of mischief.

If anyone’s an attorney or forensic computer sleuth and would like to help me pursue this individual, please contact me through this blog. And anyone who can use this internet header to help me get closer to identifying this jackass would be much appreciated:
