Settler Pogrom in Yasuf, Mosque Burned with Quran

Charred fragment of Muslim holy texts from Yasuf mosque (Atef abu-Rob/B'Tselem)

Charred fragment of Muslim holy texts from Yasuf mosque (Atef abu-Rob/B'Tselem)

B’Tselem provided me with this poignant image of the devastation wrought by thuggish settlers from the settlement of Tapuah, who torched the mosque of the West Bank village of Yasuf.  You can read the horrible words about what these brutish Jews did, but nothing conveys it better than an image like this.  Where have we seen the charred letters of prayer books before?  Among those of burned Polish synagogues of course during the Holocaust.

I’m also reminded of another powerful Midrash about the burning fragments of our own sacred Torah and the role they played in a historic event of Jewish martyrdom at the hands of the cruel Romans:

The fourth martyr was Hananiah ben Teradion, who was wrapped in a scroll of the Law and placed on a pyre of green brushwood; to prolong his agony wet wool was placed on his chest…His disciples then asked: “Master, what seest thou?” He answered: “I see the parchment burning while the letters of the Law soar upward.”

I hope the pogromists are proud that they have adopted the tactics of the worst of our historic Jewish assailants.  This hooliganism is given the name “price tag” by the Hilltop Youth who engage in it. I ask: how long with Israelis be willing to pay the price?  When will the price on the tag be so high that they will turn away in revulsion?

Another book-burning--Kristallnacht

Another book-burning--Kristallnacht

Interesting that American Jewish pro-Israel forces seem to have developed a thin veneer of conscience about this event.  Either it troubles them enough, or more likely the images are so powerful and damage it does to Israel so strong, that they’ve found it useful to condemn the conflagration at Yasuf.  “Round up the usual suspects,” I hear them say in the words of Capt. Renault in Casablanca.  These groups are about as committed to getting to the bottom of this heinous crime as the Nazis were in that famous film.

A few of you will no doubt chide me for my cynicism.  But let’s put it this way: how many of these groups will be sending volunteers to rebuild that mosque and restock it with Muslim holy texts?  How many will be standing guard to prevent the next Jewish pogrom there?  I know that Peace Now will be there as I assume will some other Israeli human rights groups.  But will there be any representative of the Orthodox movement, ADL, AJC?  When they take this sort of Jewish hate seriously enough that they’re willing to actually DO SOMETHING about it rather than write a press release, then I’ll know that change has come.

Seva Brodsky, Muslim Hater and Provocateur, Threatens My Life

Seva Brodsky: thugshot (Somerville Divestment Project)

Seva Brodsky is a militant pro-Israel hater, who’s become an expert at targeting divestment initiatives across the country against the Israeli Occupation.  He also appears to be a semi-professional provocateur who enjoys shreying about Muslims who allegedly threaten to kill him.  After reading this linked blog post, you get a clear idea that he’s a Jewish Chicken Little who sees it as his duty to try to provoke Muslims into treating him badly.  And if they don’t rise to the bait, Brodsky will do his bit to fill in the facts with his own “coloring.”

After I wrote about Initiative-97, he wrote some typical propaganda swill here which I addressed and refuted.

But what took Brodsky’s attacks out of the typical realm of right-wing snarkiness was that he made what I consider to be a potentially serious threat on my life.  Here’s a choice selection of his greatest hits:

1. Richard. Judenrat in action. Why do my people have so many sickos?

2. Richard, you can go and jump off the bridge…if you are hesitating whether to jump, I can assure you that you should — hell, I would even be willing to give you a push, should you be in need of it.

3. We have enough morons and self-loathing Jews (including you)…

4…You are a…thug.

4. I have to apologize to you for calling you a self-loathing Jew — Richard Silverstein, you are NOT a Jew. You may have been born into Jewish family, but that does not necessarily a Jew make.

You are a person of Jewish lineage, but certainly NOT a Jew. Moreover, you are an enemy of the Jewish people. The evil Torquemada, who went on to become The Grand Inquisitor of Spain, was a convert from Judaism — the grandest Capo of them all. You, of course, have not (yet) reached his stature, but you are still despicable.

Don’t ever let me meet you in person, you over-sensitive thug.

I am a proud Jew and no swinish lout like Brodsky will wrest that from me.  From his tone you can tell the kind of hateful Jew he is.  Unfortuanately, I have to share a religion with this despicable piece of dreck.

Do you get the impression this guy lives to brawl?  And that ideas aren’t important so much as the drama of hate and invective.  He actually reminds me quite a bit of the late and not lamented Meir Kahane.  He too was a brawler.  And it’s rich that Brodsky calls me a thug, who has never threatened any commenter in this blog in the way he has me.  This reminds me of the wife beater who accuses his spouse of assaulting him.  That’s the way of the bully.

My right-wing readers may scoff (not having ever been similarly threatened) and pass this off as the hyper-pugilistic rantings of someone who is perhaps a bit too passionate in defending his own odious version of the Israel and the Jewish people.  As for me, I take threats against me of any kind very seriously.  Even if they’re made by armchair thugs like this.  That’s why I’m writing this post.  The Brodsky bullies of the Jewish world will know they will get as good as they give from me.  So I put Brodsky on notice that I WILL report him to the Seattle Police Department should he write another comment containing any such threatening content.

More about Brodsky.  Apparently, he’s a fixture at Solomonia, a Pajamas Media right-wing blog, where he’s known quite aptly as the “Pest of Zion.”  From the description there, it appears he’s a semi-pro uber-Zionist provocateur of the Rachel Neuwirth-variety:

…Intrepid “Pest of Zion” Seva Brodsky showed up to check out the exhibit. What happened is that Seva was recognized, man-handled and thrown out of the exhibit by the very same folks who assaulted him at that pro-Hizballah rally back in July…

You can get a sense of how much of a Jewish extremist this one is by the title of a talk he proposed to give: The Unholy Trinity of strange bedfellows: Islamo-Fascists, Neo-Nazis, and left-wing radical extremists.

Dore Gold’s Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, another right-wing anti-Arab Israeli think tank, says this about Brodsky:

Seva Brodsky grew up in Moscow and immigrated to the United States in 1981. He received his BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northeastern University in Boston, respectively. Brodsky was actively involved in the struggle against divestment in Somerville.

He also wrote a publication of some sort analyzing the Somerville anti-Occupation divestment initiative.

He also appears to be a Jewish favorite of Sean Hannity’s over at Fox NEWS (are we surprised?).  And Michele Malkin has been known to refer to him fondly.  He’s also attempted, along with his friends in the David Project, to be a scourge of Columbia University’s Middle Eastern studies program.

Brodsky claims to be treading the holy ground of Jerusalem though the Solomonia post above has him living in Boston in April, 2007.

There seems to be a certain personality type among Russian Jewish emigres who tend toward extreme Israeli nationalism and violent political attitudes.  It’s as if the chemical interaction between Soviet Communism and their version of Judaism has caused the most corrosive reaction possible.  Among those I’ve written about here are David Yerushalmi, Avigdor Lieberman and now Brodsky.  One could add Natan Sharansky, though he seems more of a political-intellectual thug than a physical one.

And to all my Jewish readers who understand this imprecation, I address it to Brodsky: Ymach shmo v’zichrono.  This curse is usually reserved by Jews for the Nazis, but it seems an appropriate reply to as revolting a Jew and human being as Seva Brodsky.

In Israel-Palestine Which Will Win: Hate or Love?

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Yesterday, someone subscribed to my blog, which is something that always cheers me. I have nearly 100 subscribers (please consider subscribing if you haven’t alrady done so) and it’s always nice to know that someone is interested enough in your writing and views that they want to be notified of anything new that you write.

nazareth muslim jewish dialogue group anwar dafna tal photoIbtisam Mahmeed, Muslim, and Dorit Lubrani, Jew, at a meeting of the Nazareth Jewish-Arab dialogue group “Anwar” (Dafna Tal)

Because I often get spam subscribers I always check out my new ones to ensure they are real. In doing so, I discovered my new subscriber, Dafna Tal has a wonderful photo gallery website about the Israeli Palestinian conflict, Israelis and Palestinians: Bridging the Ethnic Divide. She is an Israeli photographer who now lives in New York. But she has decided to return to Israel this coming October for a two year project to document efforts by Israeli and Palestinians to offer an alternative narrative to constant war and hatred:

I would like to dedicate the next two years to the documentation and distribution of stories that offer an alternative. Starting in October, 2007, I will use written articles, photography, and audio interviews to document and share the vision of 10 stories, involving positive relations and collaborations between Jews and Palestinians from Israel and from the territories. The first year will be dedicated to production. The second year will be dedicated to the processing and distribution of the presentation to local and international audiences.

Here she explains the purpose of her project in the context of the barrage of media coverage of the constant violence besetting the region:

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with its repeated pain and violence, receives an astounding amount of coverage from the media…[It] plays a considerable role in shaping the public discourse regarding the conflict and in framing the public’s spirit and emotional awareness during times of war.

Regrettably, despite a democratic attempt to report on the event with objectivity, the information presented by the media of both societies is far from representative of the reality as it is and as a whole.

The majority of violent events presented by the media – of both societies – tend to emphasize the acts that are coming from the “other side,” making these acts the cause of the vicious cycle of violence, and turning their own actions into “retaliation.” It also serves to increase and perpetuate the polarization against the other. It has gone so far that the majority in each society have come to see the “other side” in a dehumanized way, creating a numbness and lack of compassion to the suffering of the other side.

The coverage of terror and violence by the media is vital, and serves a necessary function for supplying information on events that transpire, and raising awareness of credible threats. Still, the view presented by the media of both societies, along with other influences, is assisting in intensifying these negative feelings and in the maintenance of past perceptions. It serves as a barrier to positive progress, creating mistrust in any new positivism for the future.

Of course, there are many worthy projects attempting to achieve results similar to Dafna’s. But the proof is in the pudding and Dafna has already produced one extraordinary image that makes her entire project worthwhile in my view.

The view of Ibtisam Mahmeed, a Muslim, and Dorit Lubrani, a Jew, at a meeting of the Jewish-Arab dialogue-group “Anwar” which they established in Nazareth is extraordinary. One could say a thousand words about it and still not exhaust its beauty. I first noticed the tender love and intimacy between the two subjects. Their comfort in each other’s company is so striking compared to the hatred and discomfort raging between their two respective peoples.

The pose of one woman cradling and comforting another reminded me too of the medieval Pietas and there is a love, passion and spirituality in Dafna’s picture that is reminiscent of the Christian images. Dafna’s image is so eloquent that I think comparing it to the great Pietas of Michelangelo and others is apt.

When I see images like this one I feel great hope. If two people can bridge the divide then perhaps two entire nations can do so as well.

But when I read trash like this my hope turns to ash:

“Little Dickie” Silverstein is a Vile Anti-Semite…he is a lying fould [sic] mouthed fulltime smearster who defames every Jew who is not (like him) a pro-terror anti-Semite.

Little Dickie Silverstein…cheer[s] Arab terrorists and call[s] for Israel’s destruction. He smears anyone who thinks Israel has the right to exist and collaborates with CAIR and similar fascists.

…The inane Israel-hating smearmongering obscene little web site run by Kapo Richard Little Dickie Silverstein…Unlike Little Dickie’s own scurrilous little anti-Israel pro-terror blog, I suspect Masada2000 will still be up and running long after Dickie Silverstein is rotting in prison for treason and slander.”

…He wants Israel to be annihilated. He is a full time cheerleader for Arab terrorism and Islamic fascism.

Why couldn’t Little Dickie’s Parents have been infertile? And save us from this lying anti-Israel pro-terror piece of bullcrap.

Silverstein, you’re a first class, top shelf, prize winning judenrat piece of shit. I hope righteous Jews cut your throat after arabs have raped your ass.

Most of the comments above came from Jewcy threads when I was guest blogging there last week (this one in particular). One of the first things you notice is that all these comments are made anonymously. The individual thrives on being faceless and nameless. When I criticize the Kahanists I put my name out there and stake my reputation on it. That’s what allows them to stalk me as they have at Jewcy. This person above, who may be Masada2000’s site owner himself, is too much a coward to do that.

As to why the stirring of the cesspool of hate…It appears the Kahanists are restless now that Masada2000 has been brought low due to the mendacity of its owner. They need someone to blame and its better to blame someone you hate than blame yourself for not properly following the rules everyone else has to follow in registering and hosting websites (that’s all I can say about how the site lost its groove).

Who will win in the end? The Dafnas or the Masada2000s?
