Glenn Beck at ZOA Dinner: ’18 Months to Save World, I Know How to Do It’

ZOA 2011 dinner honorees

Mort Klein and ZOA provide endless enjoyment for anyone with an acute political satiric sense.  Take their latest fundraising gala last night covered by Haaretz.  There was so much to delight in, I hardly know where to start.  Why don’t we begin with the Bar Ilan University professor, who boasted that his Orthodox institution was the only remaining university in Israel that was “Zionist.”  Wouldn’t that be something like Alan Dershowitz bragging that Harvard was the only remaining Christian university left in America?  But that wasn’t the worst.  The good professor complained about his academic colleagues at Tel Aviv and Hebrew Universities:

“There are many Bolshevik post-Zionists at these universities, who pack their faculties with similar-minded lecturers. The Israeli universities are overflowing with post-Modernists who undermine not only Zionism but academic truth itself.”

Did you notice the equation between Zionism and “academic truth” the good professor makes?  Last I checked, the finest universities had no specific ideological or political orientation.  In fact, most truly good academics will tell you that an institution which holds to one is betraying the values of free inquiry that are critical to academia.  This guy is no junior lecturer either.  He’s Ephraim Inbar, the director of the Begin-Sadat Center.  Can you imagine how this hack got Anwar Sadat’s name associated with his think tank?  The poor Egyptian leader must be turning over in his grave.

But why stop there?  There were so many other wonders to behold at this wingnut fest.  How ’bout Republican settler advocate Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who denounced the concept of Palestinian statehood (“A Palestinian state? What is that, anyway?”) in receiving the “coveted” “Dr. Irving & Cherna Moskowitz Award for Promoting Strong US-Settler [er, Israel] Relations.”

Michele Bachmann was on hand to receive the “Dr. Miriam & Sheldon Adelson Defender of Israel Award.”  This is what constitutes “defending Israel” in the twisted minds of the ZOA and the 800 ardent wingnut supporters who flocked to this event:

[She] pledged to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem “on the day that I am sworn into office” and…assert[ed] that “Israel will never be up for grabs – not one inch, not one acre, not one square foot will ever be on the chopping block.”

…Asserting that Iranian President Ahmadinejad was “striving for a second Holocaust” Bachman said that “once again millions of Jews are at the precipice of losing their lives today”. She called for the US Navy to impose a complete naval blockade on Iran, for the US to deploy comprehensive ballistic missile systems “on land, sea, air and in space” and for the Pentagon to prepare “war plans” in order to counter Iran’s nuclear threat.

Ahmadinejad, she said, “will seek to use nuclear weapons against the US as well – and the US will learn what it is to be Israel if it does not act quickly.” She said that the US Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State and CIA director must all support this “freedom policy” and that those in the bureaucracy who fail to do so – “especially in the State Department” – should be replaced.

I really liked that touch of deploying nuclear missiles against Iran even in space.  I didn’t even know we maintain nuclear warheads in outer space.  Just think, it’s not bad enough we’re going to destroy earth’s atmosphere by dropping the Big One on the Aye-ranians, Bachmann wants to send radiation into outer space as well for the next millennium or so.  I found it especially ironic that this nuclear attack on Iran enjoyed the moniker “freedom policy.”  I suppose if you want to “liberate” half the inhabitants of earth of their lives and to pollute their environment for centuries you could call it that.

Then of course, there was the piece de la resistance, Glenn Beck. who fulminated that the situation in today’s world was far worse than in Hitler’s day:

…Because today the world is “aiding and abetting” the ranting of madmen who are out to destroy Israel and the Jewish people.

Somehow he forget Hitler’s appeaser, Neville Chamberlain.  Speaking of which, you knew you couldn’t escape a Beckian rhetorical assault without a brutish “historical” analogy between the left and Nazis.  So he equated the Brownshirts and Occupy Wall Street.  Not to mention OWS facilitates rape because it doesn’t denounce the sexual violence that allegedly takes place at their meeting sites.

Do you think there’ll be an ADL alert taking these a-historical numbskulls to task for abusing the Holocaust for partisan political purposes?  Unlikely.

The best line of the night, by far, was this one:

…”There is an 18 month window” left in which to save the world – “and I believe I know how to do it”. He pledged to announce on December 8 where he is headed – “there is a vacuum and I intend to stand in its place”, he said – but gave no details what he was referring to.

Almost brings to mind Jesus doesn’t it?  Though the analogy might not have gone over so well if it’d been raised last night.  What’s he going to run for?  God?  Please tell me he’s going to run for president.  Please God.  That’s all the Republicans need.  If I thought Obama deserved a second term, I’d be doing a happy dance if Beck threw his Stetson (oh excuse me, that’s Rick Perry territory) in the ring.

Returning to Beck’s statement above, if he “stands” in that vacuum all the way through December 8th he’s liable to suffocate, either from lack of oxygen or the oppressive weight of his own megalomania.  That is assuming he’s humanoid.  If he’s made of the divine, all bets are off.

I bet you didn’t know that the Beck-man was such a chum of Nelson Mandela, did you?  How else to explain this invocation of the great African liberator?

“To claim that there is apartheid [in Israel] when there is none is to diminish Nelson Mandela and all those like him.”

In honoring Glenn Beck, who’s been known to let loose some anti-Semitic ejaculations on his show, ZOA repeated its tradition of honoring such haters.  In 2005, it similarly honored Pat Robertson.

The fact that ZOA has named awards after two of the richest, most racist and chauvinistic American Jews means they’re getting oodles of cash from Moskowitz and Adelson.  I’ll give my own Tikun Olam award to anyone who comes up with the goods on these fat cats supporters of Greater Judea.  I’d love to be able tell you how much they’ve given to the Mort Klein Settlermania Roadshow.

Israeli Settler MK to Huckabee: ‘We’re Connected to This Land No Less Than Your Indians’

mike huckabee at irving moskowitz yeshiva

Mike Huckabee addressing Irving Moskowitz's yeshiva in Arab-rein East Jerusalem (Gali Tibbon Getty/AFP)

Mike Huckabee and Israel’s radical settler movement are almost always fodder for a good laugh.  I thank Ofer Neiman for providing one in the form of an Arutz Sheva article, in which settler MK Nissim Zeev brags about his friendship with Mike Huckabee, who he brought to Israel and hosted last week.  Among the other things Huckabee did was tour and nod approvingly at the Judaization project in East Jerusalem’s Palestinian neighborhoods.

In this photo, he’s pictured addressing a settler yeshiva established with the lucre of Miami-based bingo magnate Irving Moskowitz.  Moskowitz is the very one who stole the Palestinian Shepherd Hotel and partially demolished it last week so he can move in some settler families.  I guess no one told Huckabee that this project flies directly in the face of current U.S. policy as does supporting settler thugs guilty of promoting violence and hooliganism against Palestinians and Jews alike.

But I reserve the biggest laugh for Zeev’s recounting of his discussions with his pal, Mike, who the reporter erroneously credits with being a U.S. senator:

I got together with him to pursue two issues: [international] recognition of Jewish refugees from Arab lands and recognition by the UN of Israel with the status of “indigenous.”  It’s unacceptable that after 2,000 years of exile, we are still characterized as “occupiers.”  Since 2007, there are peoples recognized by the UN as indigenous.  The U.S. also recognizes Indians as indigenous and if it won’t return to them their ancestral lands it will offer reparations.  We too require similar recognition.  Our connection to the land appears in the Bible and we are connected to this land no less than the Indians.

In fact, I’d suggest as a terrific photo-op that Mike bring together a settler chief and an Indian chief and they can both compare war stories.  Maybe the settlers can set up shop on a few reservations and teach tribal leaders who to expand their “settlements” by annexing land belonging to white folk, and force the U.S. government to recognize their land thefts.  I’m sure that’ll go over big in Washington.

Ya gotta hand it to Zeev though, he’s a real joker:

MK Zeev noted that Israel has many friends in the UN and Congress who have only to be asked to make the changes he’s proposing.  I visited Congress, where we have many friends, and many told me it was unfortunate that Israel didn’t make this demand [of Congress].

Zeev said that Huckabee promised to do everything in his power to bring this proposal before the UN…

Go ahead, Mike.  What’s stopping you?  You’re a U.S. senator, aren’t you?  Bring forward a ‘sense of the senate’ resolution recognizing Israeli Jews as indigenous.  Maybe one of the long-lost Indian tribes?  And while you’re at it let’s get Congress to allocate a few billions in reparation for Jews who suffered an “Arab Holocaust” and were expelled from their native lands.  A Jewish Nakba.  Of our very own.  Why should only Arabs get to have one?  Just doesn’t seem fair.  If they get to suffer, why not us as well?

Mike’s not above a little mirth as well.  Among the pithy statements he made while in the Holy Land preparing for Armageddon were that he believed in a Palestinian state, just not in Israel.  Which at first glance might appear to be a conventional endorsement of the two state solution…until you realize that Huckabee embraces the settler narrative that all of Greater Israel including Palestine is Israel.  So he’s in effect telling Palestinians and his own U.S. government to move Palestine somewhere like, say Uganda.  Where have we heard that one before?

Palestinian Attempts to Buy Bankrupt East Jerusalem Real Estate Project, Debtholders and Residents Scandalized

Sunday, January 9th, 2011
nof tzion protest

Rightist protestors' placards: 'Nof Tzion is our (Jewish) home.' 'Jerusalem is Jewish, not Palestinian.' 'Don't sell Jerusalem to Palestinians.'

The East Jerusalem real estate  project known as Nof Tzion has been in deep financial difficult for months.  Then along came a white knight who offered to buy it, invest in it and pay off the outstanding loans of debt holders (at 60 agurot on the shekel).  The buyer’s attorney was Dov Weisglass, former confidant of Ariel Sharon.  All appeared to be glatt kosher.  That is, until the debt holders and residents of Nof Tzion discovered who the lead investor of the Cyprus-based venture was:, Basher Al-Masri, a Palestinian businessman.  Then all hell broke loose:

“This is an essential test of Zionism,” a Nof Zion resident said.  ”It would be the first time that Jewish land would be sold to a Palestinian.”

The irony seems lost to her that the founding of what became Israel was based on the purchase of land (back in the days when Jews actually bought land from Palestinians rather than stealing it) from what were then known as “Arabs.”  What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander, no?  And what does she mean by “Jewish” land?  How can a piece of land be intrinsically Jewish or anything else?  Did God say when he created it that only a Jew could ever own it?

At any rate, pure business, which is what this should deal should be if Israel is based on a capitalist rather than a Jewish cronyist model, seems to have taken a back seat to Jewish jingoism.  Another complicating factor was that one of the partners in the failed venture is the brother of Jerusalem’s nationalist, anti-Palestinian mayor.  It would look bad to the mayor and his political backers for a Jewish venture to be sold to a Palestinian.  A decisive vote on accepting the Palestinian offer has been postponed. And now there are rumors of an American-Jewish white knight whose aim is to torpedo the Palestinian offer.

Whatever racialist motives there were for delaying a vote and proceeding with Al-Masri’s offer weren’t reflected in the buyer’s own statement of his interest and intent:

This is business.  I’m no politician.  But rather a businessman of Palestinian nationality who knows how to work.  If my business benefits my own people, then I feel even better.

What alarms the Jewish investors and residents is that Al-Masri plans to complete the construction of the remaining 300 units in the complex and sell them to middle-class Palestinian buyers.  The Palestinian portion of the development would be separated physically, according to the description offered by Ynet, from the Jewish portion.  One of the fears being bruited about is that if Al-Masri does take over the project he will refuse to sell to Jews out of Palestinian nationalist motives.

No one yet knows the identity of the Jewish investor-spoiler who’s trying to take the project out from under Al-Masri.  There is a rumor that it may be Sheldon Adelson, though I don’t know how much weight to give to it.  Of course, Irving Moskowitz is another possibility though I believe he lives in Israel now and I’m not sure I’d describe him as “American” as the article described the mystery man.

If the Palestinian offer is spurned then I think it becomes impossible to say that Jerusalem isn’t an apartheid city.  If parts of the city are inalienably Jewish and may not be purchased by a Palestinian even under the terms of Israel’s capitalist system, then what else can you call it?

Moskowitz-Kahane Prize for Settler Zionism

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

moskowitz award spoof 2011

Dr. Irving Moskowitz, bingo king, hospital mogul and settler real estate magnate, today issued a call for nominations for the 2011 Moskowitz-Kahane Prize for Zionism. Candidates must be true believers in Jewish supremacy over all of Biblical Israel and be proficient in Krav Maga and all aspects of AK-47 maintenance. It wouldn’t hurt if they’d killed or seriously maimed a Sand Nigger. Video of candidates dousing hot oil on Israeli police during settlement evacuations is a definite plus. Attendance at a Baruch Marzel anti-Arab pogrom is a must. If you’ve called for hanging an Israeli prime minister who gives up an inch of Jerusalem, you’re our kinda guy. If you are willing to tell the world that the State of Israel can go to Hell and you support an Jewish kingdom governed by strict halacha, you’ve got a shot.

The $50,000 prize must be used to protect our brethren in the Eretz Ha-Kodesh from the filthy, disgusting scum.  Preferably you’ll purchase suitable weaponry to perform your sacred task or else use the funds to liberate formerly Jewish homes currently in the hands of the Unclean.

Past winners of the Prize have included:

Meir Kahane (may a Tzadik be remembered for good)
Baruch Goldstein
Yigal Amir
Julien Soufir
Asher Weisgan
Eden Natan-Zada
Jack Teitel

If you think you have the right stuff, see if you measure up against these Heroes of Zion.

Peaceniks, do-gooders, Arab lovers, Jew haters, need not apply.

We’ll see you at the bingo parlor in Hawaiian Gardens, the engine that drives the settlement train ($150-million worth!).

Thanks to Michael Levin for the artwork.

Taglit-Birthright and Birthright Unplugged to Merge

taglit le'kulanu

New itineraries for revamped Birthright tours

One of the more riveting and unexpected announcements of this year’s General Assembly (GA) of Jewish federations is that the Taglit-Birthright program has decided to merge with Birthright Unplugged and welcome Jewish and Palestinian youth together to return to their ethnic roots in the Holy Land.  The group, to be renamed Birthright for All (Taglit Le’Kulanu), will adopt the slogan:

Israelis And Palestinians. Two People, One Future.

The new group is the inspiration of Youth Against Delegitimization (YAD), which is sponsored by the Jewish Council of North America (JCNA).  YAD believes that the real way to ensure Israel’s legitimacy is by embracing its identity as a nation of Jews, Muslim and Christians.  Hence the decision to add Palestinian youth and staff to the trips.

It is rumored that hedge fund titan and purported Israel-hater George Soros and Palestinian entrepreneur Sam Bahour engineered a coup, wresting control of Taglit from Sheldon Adelson and Michael Steinhardt, its current neocon funders.  When Soros promised the board that he would triple funding and bring an extra 100,000 Diaspora Jewish youth to Israel, it voted to endorse the radical shift in the group’s mission.

The struggle for control of the group has initiated a free-for-all among other right wing funders, with a rumor that Dr. Irwin Mieskeit, noted bingo king and hospital reseller, is angry at the loss of Birthright as a re-education tool for Diaspora Jewish youth.  He is rumored to be considering founding a competing group to be called, My Birthright Not Yours, which will only visit sites sacred to the settler movement.  Included in this group’s tours will be paramilitary training, personal audiences with Mossad hitmen, briefings with IDF commandos preparing them for their next targeted killing assignment.  Parents of tour participants will even be offered shares in Dr. Mieskeit’s real estate projects which are miraculously transforming East Jerusalem into a Jewish city once again.

In comments offered jointly to Arutz Sheva and New York Jewish Press, Mieskeit is reported to have said about the new group:

A bruch on them, we can never support this Birthright fraud nor an effort to bring a more balanced view of Israel.  Who needs balance?  We know right from wrong.  We’re right, they’re wrong.  With those Birthright shmegegees, the next thing you know they’ll be talking about Nakba and Palestinian suffering, wah, wah, wah.  Crocodile tears.  That’s what it is.

Look, let’s be honest.  A little Holocaust trauma goes a long way when you’re trying to steal the land of another people.  I’m not above making Jewish girls cry if it helps me buy the Shepherd Hotel for a song and a dance.

Birthright tours under the old regime were noted for making shidduchs and producing new Jewish couples to take their place proudly on the stage of Jewish history.  Dr. Mieskeit invoked a hidden fear of many Jews thinking about sending their children on intimate tours with Palestinians:

We’ve already got enough Jews marrying out.  Do we need those Palestinian boys shtupping our girls, knocking them up and producing little half-breed Jewrab babies?

Returning to Birthright for All–now, for the first time the program will be open to Palestinian youth as well, enabling them to rediscover their connections to the land of their forebears.  Instead of avoiding the Territories as previous Birthright tours did religiously, the new tours will include travel throughout Israel and the Territories.  In a first, the new Birthright proposes to visit both settlements and their next door neighbor Palestinian villages.  While a Birthright for All spokesperson said that tour participants may help with the Palestinian olive harvest, insurance and legal liability will prevent any of the young people from participating in the pogroms sponsored by the settler youth.

Here is a statement from the new organization about its goals:

Taglit Lekulanu will introduce a more realistic perspective on Israel by exposing participants to both Jewish and Palestinian narratives. The trip will be open to Palestinian and Jewish Americans and staffed by both Jews and Palestinians.

The trip will bear witness to the occupation, spending a morning with MachsomWatch at West Bank checkpoints and taking tours around the Separation Wall and Hebron. There will also be meetings with Palestinian human rights activists and a visit to Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem.

Inside Israel, meetings with IDF officers and Jewish Agency representatives will be complemented by meetings with Israeli anti-occupation activists and civil rights organizers struggling for equal rights for Israel’s Palestinian citizens. Participants will also visit unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev and learn about the social struggle of Arab Jews. And of course there will be time to explore Tel Aviv’s famed nightlife and shopping.

Make sure they tell ‘em about all the real estate opportunities available in Jaffo through evicting poor Arabs from their run down apartments, tearing ‘em down, and turning ‘em into luxury condos for white Jews.  This way they can realize their Zionist dreams of rebuilding the homeland while making a handsome profit at the expense of the lowly and downtrodden Arab usurpers.  That oughta keep ‘em comin’ back for more…

Note: Events related above may or may not take liberties with fact.  They certainly bear a greater resemblance to truth, at least as I see it.

Britain Expels Mossad Station Chief

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The British government decreed the Mossad’s station chief in London persona non grata in retaliation for the spy agency’s forging 12 British passports used in the Dubai assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabouh (if anyone can uncover the name of this person I’d be grateful).  For those Israelis who seek to portray this act as “more of the same” and Britain “going through the paces” consider that it is almost unheard of for allies to expel intelligence agents of friendly powers.  The last time I can think of this happening was…what a surprise, when Naor Gilon high-tailed it out of Washington a few years ago after serving as the Israeli conduit for Steve Rosen and Keith Franklin.  Yes, somehow Israel does get itself into more than its share of hot water with allegedly friendly governments.

This too somehow doesn’t sound like business as usual in Westminster:

…A host of lawmakers used harsh language to excoriate Israel on the floor of Parliament, calling for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador, urging criminal prosecution of those involved in the Dubai operation and going so far as to say that Israel was becoming a “rogue state.”

The Telegraph’s foreign editor issued a call for the sacking of Mossad chief Meir Dagan and warned that future intelligence cooperation between Britain and Israel on major issues like Iran’s nuclear program would be imperiled until things were set aright.

Using Goebbels tactic of turning a lie you utter into truth and a truth your enemy utters into a lie, some of Israel’s most far-right Knesset members engaged in some looniness of their own, of course abusing the anti-Semitism trope in the process:

Members of the Israeli parliament likened the British government to “anti-Semitic dogs” and demanded the expulsion of Britain’s military attaché in Tel Aviv after erupting in fury over the expulsion of an Israeli diplomat in London.

“I think the British are being hypocritical, and I do not wish to insult dogs here, since some dogs show true loyalty, [but] who gave the British the right to judge us on the war on terror?” said Arieh Eldad, a right-wing member of the Knesset.

The canine theme was taken up by a second MP, Michael Ben-Ari, who said: “Dogs are usually loyal, the British may be dogs, but they are not loyal to us. They seem to be loyal to the anti-Semitic establishment.

“We have learned that a dog must be called by its name. This is anti-Semitism disguised as anti-Zionism.”

It makes you wonder how these thugs in the guise of politicians would react if MI5 stole Israeli passports and used them to assassinate an enemy of the state.  Would Israel sit back and enjoy it?  Somehow I doubt it.  These birds would be the first to decry this usurpation of Israeli sovereignty, etc.

Bibi Netanyahu got his sought after presidential meeting with Barack Obama today as the crowning glory of the Aipac conference.  But all was not well.  First, after swearing for days that Israel would never embarrass another American official with an announcement of building of new East Jerusalem settlements at delicate junctures in diplomatic activity, Haaretz reported that the Israeli government once again proudly announced the construction of new housing in that contested area.  And this only hours before Bibi graced the Oval Office.

The blame for this black eye goes not to the government this time, but to Jerusalem’s bellicose nationalist mayor, who approved of turning the Shepherd Hotel into housing for extremist settlers.  The Hotel was stolen through the manipulations of the Israeli government, which declared the Palestinian property unclaimed after 1967, eventually turning it over to pro-settler bingo magnate Irving Moskowitz for a cool $1-million.  Moskowitz funds a settler equivalent of the Nobel Prize for most vitriolic, hate-filled settler leader, the Moskowitz Prize for Zionism.  He throws a big party to celebrate and advertises in all the best Jewish periodicals.  Somehow, it’s a strange irony that the millions in bingo betting proffered by the hard-working people of southern California are funding some of the seediest, most hate-filled Jewish extremists in the Middle East.

In the meantime, Obama met Bibi today with no essential meeting of the minds on how to pursue peace negotiations despite the fact that the Israelis made much over the past week since the Ramat Shlomo fiasco, which ruined Joe Biden’s trip, that they were turning over a new leaf and would behave themselves in future.  We can see how long such assurances last.

The question is what will Obama do about it.  Given the history of the past year, it is hard to imagine Obama having the gumption necessary to take on Bibi.  George Bush and Jim Baker managed it in 1992, but sad to say, Barack Obama apparently is no George Bush.

Moskowitz Prize for Revanchist Zionism

Lion for Zion (Killing Arabs) Award

Lion for Zion (Killing Arabs) Award

The right-wing settlers, believe it or not, have their own Nobel Prize. Just as Alfred Nobel created his award based on a checkered fortune earned from manufacturing dynamite, Irving Moskowitz funds his “Lion of Zion” award based on his checkered fortune as a U.S. bingo and hospital mogul. The Moskowitz Prize is an attempt to add luster and prestige to the notion of killing Arabs and stealing their land. No doubt, had he lived, Meir Kahane would’ve been one of the first recipients.

But you have to admit, it sounds good:

The Moskowitz Prize for Zionism was established in recognition of the people who put Zionism into action in today’s Israeli society – at times risking their own personal security, placing the collective before personal needs, and doing what it takes to ensure a strong, secure Jewish homeland.

…The need for this special prize arose from the feeling, shared by many, that the true Zionist heroes in today’s Israel – those known to the public as well as those far outside the public spotlight – do not always receive the institutional recognition and public praise they deserve.

These are Israeli men and women acting from a feeling of personal responsibility, vision and national mission, each in his field, and often while sacrificing their personal welfare and even endangering their personal security.

This Lion of Zion prize is awarded to Israeli citizens, residents of Israel, who best personify modern Zionism in Israel in their actions addressing the challenges that face Zionism today – in spheres such as education, research, settlement, culture, defense and security.

Make Israel a better place--by ridding it of Arabs

Make Israel a better place--by ridding it of Arabs

Those last few words give away the entire premise of this award.  Everything else is a smokescreen.  They’re lionizing the most angry settler Jews.  Not the ones necessarily who shoot the guns, but the intellectual authors of the most extreme of the settler movement.

Here’s how Max Blumenthal quotes last year’s $50,000 winner, Ronit Shuker, founder of the radical Shvut Rachel settlement:

When I interviewed [her] in May 2009, she spoke the same eliminationist language that might have resonated with Teitel. “The government doesn’t know how to deal with [the Palestinians],” Shuker told me. “If I was Prime Minister, I would send all of them to Iran, to Sudan, to Egypt, to Jordan. I would wish them all the best, but not in the land of Israel.”

In light of the following award criteria, I have a few nominees in mind:

After a long, careful process winners were chosen for the Prize – people whom the committee sees as reflecting the best of Zionist action, within the complex realities of Israel today – in the fields of social action, education and settling the Land.

Someone this award simply can’t do without is Jack Teitel.  He is someone who:

…Does not see himself as an extraordinary person. Not as a hero, but as one who simply fulfills his duty, as an Israeli, to make Israel a better place – a safer, more just place, and at the end of the day – a more Zionist home.

How better to accomplish these goals than by killing unsuspecting Israeli police officers in protest of action against settlers; or masterminding the shooting spree that killed two Tel Aviv gay teenagers; or planting the bomb that wounded Hebrew University professor Zeev Sternhell?  Teitel, by the way, hails from Shuker’s Shvut Rachel settlement.  And while we’re at it, if we can make posthumous awards, Eden Natan-Zada is a shoe-in.  This IDF deserter who sheltered in Tapuach (from whence came those who torched a mosque recently) and eventually murdered four Israeli Arabs on a bus before the passengers went berserk and tore him limb from limb.  A third stellar candidate would be Asher Weissgan, another Jewish settler terrorist (though not a hero) who made Israel a better place by offing several Palestinian laborers who had the misfortune of taking him up on his offer of a lift home.  And where did Weissgan hail from?  Shvut Rachel of course.

It’s no accident, by the way, that Haaretz notes Moskowitz came up with his idea for his Prize after the Israeli government awarded its highest honor, the Israel Prize, to one of Israel’s harshest settler critics, none other than Prof. Zeev Sternhell.

I urge you to make your own nominations here.  If you understand Hebrew, I dare you to watch this quaint little video without becoming sick.

Moskowitz is one of the major backers of the settler project to de-Arabize East Jerusalem and has financed the “purchase” (usually under suspicious circumstances) of various Palestinian properties there.  The existing residents are evicted and make way for settler families who proudly wave their Israeli flags and rub their Arab neighbors nose in the fact that the latter might be the next to go.

Hebron Fund Hosts Settler Gala at Mets’ Citi Field

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Later this month, one of the leading U.S. fundraising groups supporting the most extreme settlement groups, will host its annual fundraising gala at the New York Mets’ new Citi Field. David Ignatius wrote a few months ago in the Washington Post that the Fund and other pro-settler groups raised $33.5-million over a three-year period to support Israeli (Bernard Avishai calls them “Judean”) colonists who live on Palestinian land in violation of international law. Peace Now, the most formidable source for documentary evidence on the subject, estimates that the vast majority of settlements sit on privately-owned Palestinian land expropriated from their legal owners.

Adalah-NY and other anti-Occupation groups have raised their voices against this gruesome party and demanded that the Mets cancel the event. They did the same last year and the midtown hotel which was serving as host ignored the protest and the event went ahead as planned, raising hundreds of thousands more for settler racists. Adalah’s protest largely revolves around the fact that one of the settlers’ primary objectives is to make the land free for Jews and to rid it of Arabs. Given that Jackie Robinson is closely identified with N.Y. Mets history (the stadium rotunda under the club where the gala will be held is named in his honor), a protest aimed at the Hebron Fund’s racist mission is particularly apt.

But Adalah doesn’t mention other salient facts that cause the Hebron Fund and other pro settler fundraisers to violate both U.S. and international law and their tax-exempt status. Some of the funding supports settlement security. In other words, it may be used to buy guns, ammunition, communication gear, dogs, vehicles and other paraphanelia settlers use to terrorize their Palestinian neighbors. U.S. law specifically bars funds from U.S. citizens being used for acts of terror.

Clearly, Jack Teitel, accused settler mass-murderer (of Jews and Palestinians), and others have engaged in such acts of terror. Residents of other settlements have engaged in terror as well. It is high time that we American Jews stop this abuse by refusing to support it and by ostracizing those who do. I am waiting in vain for New York Jewish leaders to call for an end to support for the Hebron Fund and calling on the Mets to eject pro-settler donors from the luxury boxes at Citi Field. It is high time that the IRS review Hebron Fund’s 501c3 status and revoke it if it can be found that their funds were used to support terror.

Max Blumenthal has also written about the Moskowitz Foundation, another tax-exempt pro-settler vehicle for funding the Judaization of East Jerusalem, awarding $50,000 to Ronit Shuker, founder of Shvut Rachel. Shuker is documented on video calling for the expulsion of Arabs from the Land of Israel, which is nothing less than a call for ethnic cleansing. Once again, U.S. taxpayer subsidized funds should not be supporting calls for ethnic cleansing in the West Bank.

Phil Weiss has also documented on audiotape another settler leader, Nadia Matar of Women in Green, calling for the assassination of Mahmoud Abbas during a talk she gave at a fundraiser held for her group, Women in Green, held at a Manhattan synagogue. Yet another example, of settlers supporting terror on our dime. When will we wise up?
