U.S. Non-Profit, Central Fund of Israel Supports Settler Reign of Terror

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Some time ago, Phil Weiss noted that one of the more successful settler fundraising vehicles was the Central Fund of Israel, which raised $12-million in 2007 on behalf of some of the most extreme of West Bank settlements.  The Fund breaks out its support in various categories, one of which I found extremely interesting: security.  The Fund’s 207 IRS 990 form lists over $500,000 spent to support settlement security.  If you think about what would fall under this rubric, it would be guns, ammunition, K-9 attack dogs, night vision equipment, communications equipment: all the paraphernalia that reinforce the reign of terror that settlements impose in their Palestinian neighbors.  In fact, it’s legitimate to ask whether some of these settlements might not have used donations raised through the Central Fund for guns and other weapons used to attack, maim and even kill Palestinians, though I should be clear that I haven’t yet seen any documentary evidence to support this.  But it seems only reasonable to assume that this is a highly possible, and even likely scenario.

Clearly, Jack Teitel, accused killer of Israeli police, Palestinian farmers, and bomber of a Hebrew University professor, along with other colorful crimes, is a product of the U.S. ultra-Orthodox movement which funnels these millions to settler Judea.  But we must ask even more particularly, after he made aliyah to Shvut Rachel, did some of those donations, directly or indirectly, support his terror “lifestyle?”  Did he or his family receive any financial support whatsoever from these charities (which often fund needs of specific settler families).  Have any of these funds supported that other settler terrorist living at Shvut Rachel, Asher Weissgan?  Have they supported Yigal Amir or efforts to free him from prison?

This is not so far-fetched a question since there is a pro-settler group, Honenu, which advocates for the liberation of convicted Israeli terrorists like Amir from prison.  The group has received Central Fund donations.

In addition, Susan Wexner gave $600,000 to support the work of  YadKatif, which opposes the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza under the guise of supporting the living expenses of allegedly indigent evacuated settlers.  Should not the IRS legitimiately question why U.S. taxpayers are subsidizing a huge donation to an organization opposed to the policy of a democratically elected Israeli government?

U.S. law forbids tax-exempt organizations from funding terror.  In fact, this was one of the arguments used to shut down Islamic charities in this country.  I’m set to argue what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.  Let’s insist that the IRS use the same rigor in scrutinizing some of the leading non-profit settler funding vehicles.  Beside the Central Fund, they include the Hebron Fund (supports one of the most extreme settler enclaves), Ateret Cohanim (“buys” Palestinian property  to further the Judaization of East Jerusalem), Shuva Israel (supports illegal outposts), PEP Endowment for Israel, and others listed in Jonathan Cook’s fine overview in The National.

Americans for a Safe Israel and Chabad have sponsored U.S. fundraising tours for Israeli Kahanists like David Ha-Ivri, who was a close friend of another settler mass murderer, Eden Natan Zada.  AFSI also sponsored a Manhattan synagogue talk by Nadia Matar, leader of Women in Green in which she called for Mahmoud Abbas’ assassination.  When will we put a stop to this insanity?  Our government claims it wants to play a constructive role in seeking an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, yet we allow U.S. funds to support the vilest and most violent Judean opponents of that very policy.

We should also note the irony that the Israeli foreign ministry bellowed about the Breaking the Silence NGO which received EU funding on behalf of its project documenting IDF human rights abuses during the Gaza war.  Avigdor Lieberman kvetched that foreign governments had no right interfering in domestic Israeli politics.  Apparently, the flagrant intervention in Israeli domestic politics represented by the tens of millions poured down the throats of extremist settlers like shnapps after Shabbat davening, exists in some different, and kosher category.

Hebron Fund Hosts Settler Gala at Mets’ Citi Field

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Later this month, one of the leading U.S. fundraising groups supporting the most extreme settlement groups, will host its annual fundraising gala at the New York Mets’ new Citi Field. David Ignatius wrote a few months ago in the Washington Post that the Fund and other pro-settler groups raised $33.5-million over a three-year period to support Israeli (Bernard Avishai calls them “Judean”) colonists who live on Palestinian land in violation of international law. Peace Now, the most formidable source for documentary evidence on the subject, estimates that the vast majority of settlements sit on privately-owned Palestinian land expropriated from their legal owners.

Adalah-NY and other anti-Occupation groups have raised their voices against this gruesome party and demanded that the Mets cancel the event. They did the same last year and the midtown hotel which was serving as host ignored the protest and the event went ahead as planned, raising hundreds of thousands more for settler racists. Adalah’s protest largely revolves around the fact that one of the settlers’ primary objectives is to make the land free for Jews and to rid it of Arabs. Given that Jackie Robinson is closely identified with N.Y. Mets history (the stadium rotunda under the club where the gala will be held is named in his honor), a protest aimed at the Hebron Fund’s racist mission is particularly apt.

But Adalah doesn’t mention other salient facts that cause the Hebron Fund and other pro settler fundraisers to violate both U.S. and international law and their tax-exempt status. Some of the funding supports settlement security. In other words, it may be used to buy guns, ammunition, communication gear, dogs, vehicles and other paraphanelia settlers use to terrorize their Palestinian neighbors. U.S. law specifically bars funds from U.S. citizens being used for acts of terror.

Clearly, Jack Teitel, accused settler mass-murderer (of Jews and Palestinians), and others have engaged in such acts of terror. Residents of other settlements have engaged in terror as well. It is high time that we American Jews stop this abuse by refusing to support it and by ostracizing those who do. I am waiting in vain for New York Jewish leaders to call for an end to support for the Hebron Fund and calling on the Mets to eject pro-settler donors from the luxury boxes at Citi Field. It is high time that the IRS review Hebron Fund’s 501c3 status and revoke it if it can be found that their funds were used to support terror.

Max Blumenthal has also written about the Moskowitz Foundation, another tax-exempt pro-settler vehicle for funding the Judaization of East Jerusalem, awarding $50,000 to Ronit Shuker, founder of Shvut Rachel. Shuker is documented on video calling for the expulsion of Arabs from the Land of Israel, which is nothing less than a call for ethnic cleansing. Once again, U.S. taxpayer subsidized funds should not be supporting calls for ethnic cleansing in the West Bank.

Phil Weiss has also documented on audiotape another settler leader, Nadia Matar of Women in Green, calling for the assassination of Mahmoud Abbas during a talk she gave at a fundraiser held for her group, Women in Green, held at a Manhattan synagogue. Yet another example, of settlers supporting terror on our dime. When will we wise up?

Pro-Settler Website Features Schumer, Yet He Claims He Won’t Speak at Their Rally

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

If Chuck Schumer isn't speaking at this event, why does its website feature him?

If Chuck Schumer isn't speaking at this event, why does its website feature him?

A source reports that Chuck Schumer will not speak at the Israel Independence Day pro-settler concert as was reported earlier here.  A glossy poster advertising the concert features Schumer’s name prominently and lists him as a speaker.  The senator was approached to participate in the main community rally, but never approached about speaking to the settlers.  Apparently, the concert organizers were only too willing to appropriate Schumer’s name for their cause.

But one has to ask why no one on Schumer’s staff noticed that the concert website features his smiling visage appearing to endorse the pro-settler hate that will be spewed at this event sponsored by the Hebron Fund, Ateret Cohanim and Arutz Sheva (settler radio).  And now that his people know (or will know shortly) will they insist his image be removed?

Other New York Democratic political leaders featured as speakers are Anthony Weiner, Dov Hikind, and Sheldon Silver.  I know for a fact that these are Dov’s kind of people.  But aren’t Silver and Weiner the least bit embarrassed about consorting with Jewish pogromists?

Maariv Defends Settler Riots: ‘Only Venue of Protest Left is Violence’

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

My friend, Stefan Merken, brings me news of a particularly hideous column (in Hebrew) from the Israeli rightist daily, Maariv, dealing with last week’s riots in Hebron.  It was written by Kalman Libskind, a reporter for the paper.  Before I quote from it, keep in mind that the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that Hebron’s House of Contention, from which 200 extremist settlers were evicted last week, was purchased fraudulently from its former Palestinian owners.  For that reason, the Court overturned the sale and returned the building to its former owner:

Fake Democracy

In a country where the justice system is political, a media that [sic] makes no room for a flow of opinions, where half the nation finds no place in the media discourse, it should come as no surprise that the only communication tool left them is the rock.

The youth gathered at Beit Hashalom in Hebron have skipped school these past 2 weeks but the lesson they received from the government of Israel in civics was more than they could have ever received in the classroom. The conclusion of the lesson is that in a place where the government uses democracy to advance its own agendas, the only venue of protest left is that of violence.

We’ve got to parse this statement for its rich well-spring of anti-democratic thought.  Note that the Israeli justice system, which in reality is by no means “political” or even particularly sympathetic to “left-wing” causes or political ideas, becomes a hostage to some sort of far left political cabal.

As for the media “lockdown” on coverage of the settler movement, please note that Libskind is publishing this piece in Israel’s largest-circulation daily, and one that is quite right of center; which is of course the reason they chose to publish it.  Not to mention Libskind’s far-fetched claim that “half the nation” supports the settlers.  A truer number might be 20%, if that.

What is especially striking is the tone of deep grievance the author adopts in discussing Israeli democracy.  Instead of being a fair, balanced system in which differing political ideologies struggle for expression, Israeli democracy is some sort of crooked system.  Essentially, “the fix is in.”

Laughably, Libskind calls the State of Israel, the “State of Tel Aviv,” as if this was the same as calling it Sodom and Gomorrah (Tel Aviv being known among settlers and the militant Orthodox as a den of vice and iniquity).  With such a divide between religious and secular, right and left, settler and green-line Israeli, the question may be properly asked–can these two camps live together in the same State?

I say something once more that I’ve said many times here.  These ideas are noxious, pernicious, and profoundly threatening to Israeli democracy.  And I don’t mean this in some far-fetched, distant sense.  I mean it literally.  There are settler groups which call the state a fraud and call for its overthrow and replacement by a halachic theocratic (and ultimately authoritarian and even fascist) State.  This is sedition.  This is treason.  This is John Brown at Harper’s Ferry.  With the stark difference being that at least Brown wished to mobilize an uprising to free the slaves; while the settlers wish to, in effect, enslave the Palestinians and subject them to Jewish domination.

To me, these settlers are the equivalent of Samson, eager to bring down the pillars of the building in order to “take out” his Philistine enemies in one bold, daring act of total destruction.  They are nihilists whose raging slogan seems to be “apres nous, le deluge.”

They must be condemned by every right-thinking Jew and Israeli.  And they must be combated by our own federal government, which provides tax exempt status for groups like the Hebron Fund and the Central Fund for Israel, raising millions every year to support this budding threat to the Israeli state.

Hebron Settlers Forcibly Evicted from House of Dispute

Hebron settler and young daughter evicted from House of Dispute (Sebastian Scheiner/AP)

The Israeli government finally did what it should have done months ago and forcibly evicted 200 hardline settlers from the House of Dispute in Hebron after the Supreme Court ruled that the building had been ‘appropriated’ from the Palestinian owner based on fraud.  Settlers had turned the building into a virtual headquarters of resistance to Israeli state authority and a showcase for violent opposition to a Palestinian presence.

What seems truly pathetic to me is that this nation based on democracy seemed so tied up in knots when it came to confronting the threat posed by the settlers’ defiance.  Where firmness and resolve were required, vacillation ruled.  This is to be expected when so much of the state apparatus has actually aided and abetted these same settlers.  It’s almost as if one hand helps them while the other hand tries to undo what the first hand has done.  A recipe for confusion and indecision.

We can only be thankful that Ehud Barak, who usually deserves no praise, finally put a stop to this ridiculousness.  Now, however, the extremists are running rampant in Hebron itself attempting to make the entire city ungovernable.  This puts even greater pressure on the military to confront them and end the anti-Palestinian pogrom.

Everything about this settler movement should revolt reasonable Jews.  They’ve appropriate the sacred suffering of Jewish history and used it for their own partisan political purposes.  This is simply appalling to me as a Jew:

As Palestinians watched from rooftops and windows, some settlers shouted at the troops, calling them Nazis. A few had sewn yellow stars on their shirts, like Jews had been obliged to under Hitler. On a wall near the confrontation, Hebrew graffiti declared, “There will be a war over the House of Peace.”

“House of Peace” my arse. Whose peace is it. The peace of the thief, the racist, the interloper, the hooligan, the hater. What kind of peace is that? Peace based on oppression, domination and forced submission of the Palestinians to their will?

I find the image sickening as well.  Not because the settler is resisting.  She has every right.  But putting her 12 year old daughter in a situation in which SHE could be hurt.  It’s appalling.  A 12 year old should never be put in physical danger even for the sake of political principle.  This is yet again an example of the ways in which settler extremist exploit their children in a feeble attempt at national emotional blackmail.

This is a battle designed to benefit the settlers.  They feel they win by losing.  And it’s only a single battle in a long war.  So make no mistake that this is a major victory.  It’s only a small one.  The Hebronistas will make the state pay a price every step of the way in this process.  And if the IDF is not more decisive than it was in this case, the Israeli nation and its greater interests will be dominated by a small band of hardline anti-Palestinian zealots.  That’s hardly democracy.

And we in the American Jewish community are also at fault as J Street points out in this statement:

Groups like the Brooklyn-based Hebron Fund are actively working to undermine the possibility of a peaceful two-state solution to the conflict by continuing to financially underwrite the right-wing settler presence in Hebron. Elegant fundraisers in posh hotels…fuel the fires that the Israeli government must now extinguish before they consume the state of Israel itself.

The actions of settler extremists represent a grave threat to Israel’s democracy and its security. Americans who truly care about Israel and seek to secure its future as a democratic home for the Jewish people have for too long turned a blind eye to the damage being done with funds and support raised here that propel the settlers and their destructive agenda.

The Hebron Fund raises over $1-million every year to support this hooliganism and racial supremacism. Wealthy right wing Jews like Irving Moskowitz, with his California bingo empire, are instrumental in this work. Hotels like the Marriott chain welcome the aiders and abettors of lawlessness and violence into their banquet halls in return for cold hard cash.  And the IRS gives these groups tax-exempt status in effect sanctioning their noxious agenda.  We all better wise up if we ever want peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

U.S. Government Subsidizes Settler Pogromists: Your Tax Dollars at Work

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

The accompanying B’Tselem video should make your stomach turn and call to mind what a Kristallnacht perpetrated by Jews might resemble.  These are citizens of the State of Israel who treat its authorities with utter contempt, not to mention shower them with violence:
Jewish desecration of Hebron Muslim cemetery

Settler desecration of Hebron Muslim cemetery

…B’Tselem released footage on Thursday showing a mob of settlers clashing with Israeli security forces in the West Bank town of Hebron.  During the clashes…settlers…wounded an IDF soldier by pouring turpentine on him as he tried to stop them from throwing stones at Palestinians…The settlers also scribbled graffiti…including spraying ‘Mohammed Pig’ on the walls of a local mosque and on Palestinian homes nearby.

Mouatassem Daana, a Palestinian resident of Hebron, said he saw settlers gathered near the building “writing demeaning graffiti on the wall of the mosque insulting the Prophet Mohammad” and breaking windows.

An IDF spokesman said settlers also vandalized a cemetery near the mosque.

'Mohammed hazir' ('Mohammed is a pig') graffiti on mosque wall

'Mohammed hazir' ('Mohammed is a pig') graffiti on mosque wall

Israel’s prime minister has called such outrageous behavior a “pogrom.”  Last week, Jews around the world commemorated the anniversary of Kristallnacht. I’m afraid that this represents our own Jewish Kristallnacht by which we desecrate Muslim cemeteries and mosques. And settlers committed such violence not only against their Palestinian target of choice, but against IDF soldiers and Israeli police.  In fact, one wonders whether they even make a distinction.

In fact, one West Bank rabbi has gone so far as to state:

“The state of Israel has become the enemy of the people and the land of Israel,” settler rabbi Shalom Dov Wolpe said Tuesday during an emergency meeting on the state’s plan to evacuate a house in Hebron…

For the life of me I simply cannot understand the forbearance with which Israel treats these traitorous zealots.  Yes, the settlers are known to make outrageous claims that confronting them will lead to civil war; that the nation will rise up against any political leadership that opposes them, etc.  But all this is always shown to be empty rhetoric when push comes to shove as it did during the Gaza evacuation.  This however, doesn’t prevent said leadership from being cowed in the face of such bullying blackmail.

All this is something over which I have no control.  Where I do have control, and do feel great anger is knowing that my own government has provided 501c3 non-profit status to various settler groups which raise funds to support this noxious enterprise.  And raise fund they do.  Of the three groups listed in the Reuters report, a single one, the Hebron Fund raised $8 million from 2002-2005.

It hosts an annual gala in Manhattan each year which provides one-third of the overall funds raised in a given year.  This year’s event was held last week at a midtown hotel.  Adalah NY demonstrated outside the event and unsuccessfully asked the Marriott to cancel it on the grounds that the settlement project constitutes a gross violation of Palestinian human rights.  The hotel chain was more concerned about accepting the Hebron Fund’s check than they were with respecting human rights.

In fact, the violence in Hebron revolves around a formerly Palestinian property appropriated/stolen by settlers through a forged deed (not the first time they’ve tried this fraudulent ruse).  The High Court has directed the settlers to return the property and they’ve refused.  Which means they deny the authority of Israel’s supreme judicial authority to adjudicate the matter.

Funds raised from the N.Y. fundraiser will be used to “Judaize” the building and Hebron itself:

After settlers took over a new but unfinished building in Hebron in March 2007, the fund solicited donations to finance renovations like installing doors, windows and heating systems.

“Dozens of new families can now come live in Hebron — only if we renovate this building quickly!” the Hebron Fund said in its appeal…Critics who argue that the projects promote settlement expansion and run counter to U.S. foreign policy…

Not to mention that the ultimate goal of these Jewish extremist is to uproot any vestige of Palestinian existence from Hebron and the rest of the Territories.  This is what our government is endorsing with a tax-exemption.  How does the IRS do this and let these people get away with this U.S. endorsed racism and hooligan violence?

Let us tell our government that American Jews do not support this disgusting display.  We do not want such Jews given a heksher by our government.  If anything, they should be declared a terrorist organization just like Hamas and Kahane Chai.  When will government bureaucrats come to their senses and understand this?  When will our so-called Jewish leaders speak out and tell them this?  If they truly disapprove of this stain on the Jewish conscience then they would denounce it publicly and intensely.  Thus far, I’ve heard only silence from Abe Foxman, David Harris and the Israel lobby groups which claim to be concerned about human (not just Jewish) rights.

Some of my readers persist in the belief that only Muslims and Arabs hate Jews but that there is no such feeling among Jews toward the former.  This story disproves that false notion.  Hate unfortunately is an equal opportunity offender that afflicts both religions.
