EU Lays Basis for Sanctions Against Israel

Monday, January 10th, 2011

In late Apartheid-era South Africa, the momentum among the international community shifted inexorably toward toppling the discriminatory system.  Crippling sanctions took their toll on the country’s economy and psyche.  While the white regime clung desperately to power, finally a spark of realism emerged within the ruling party which allowed the rise of a leader like F.W. de Klerk, who negotiated a peaceful transition to democracy and majority rule.

In the past few months, a similar process has emerged outside Israel with multiple Latin American nations (the latest being Chile) recognizing a Palestinian state within 1967 borders. Now, Haaretz reports on a sensitive new EU report drafted by consuls general in Jerusalem and Ramallah which would lay the groundwork for a possible EU sanctions regime against Israel as long as it continues the Occupation and rejects a Palestinian state.

Among the recommendations:

1. a boycott of all Israeli products, services and businesses operating outside the Green Line including East Jerusalem

2. refusal to attend meetings with Israeli officials outside the Green Line (including East Jerusalem)

3. creating a settler black list forbidding entry to EU countries of those suspected of committing violent acts against Palestinians

4. discouraging citizens of EU countries (most likely directed at European Jews) from purchasing property in East Jerusalem

Returning to the South African analogy, the chief difference is that there seems to be no realism whatsoever within the Israeli political system nor any moderate or pragmatic leader capable of being the Israeli de Klerk.  In that event, it seems that Israel’s future is deeply clouded.  Without political leadership, and with the gathering storm of opprobrium against the Occupation and denial of Palestinian national rights, it seems something has to give.  It could be an international diktat jointly negotiated by the U.S., EU, and Quartet compelling Israel to yield.  Or it could take some other form.  But it appears more and more likely that Israel simply cannot come to terms with what it must do and that the rest of the world must help or even force Israel to get where it needs to be so that both that country and the rest of the region can find stability and peace.

Palestinian Attempts to Buy Bankrupt East Jerusalem Real Estate Project, Debtholders and Residents Scandalized

nof tzion protest

Rightist protestors' placards: 'Nof Tzion is our (Jewish) home.' 'Jerusalem is Jewish, not Palestinian.' 'Don't sell Jerusalem to Palestinians.'

The East Jerusalem real estate  project known as Nof Tzion has been in deep financial difficult for months.  Then along came a white knight who offered to buy it, invest in it and pay off the outstanding loans of debt holders (at 60 agurot on the shekel).  The buyer’s attorney was Dov Weisglass, former confidant of Ariel Sharon.  All appeared to be glatt kosher.  That is, until the debt holders and residents of Nof Tzion discovered who the lead investor of the Cyprus-based venture was:, Basher Al-Masri, a Palestinian businessman.  Then all hell broke loose:

“This is an essential test of Zionism,” a Nof Zion resident said.  ”It would be the first time that Jewish land would be sold to a Palestinian.”

The irony seems lost to her that the founding of what became Israel was based on the purchase of land (back in the days when Jews actually bought land from Palestinians rather than stealing it) from what were then known as “Arabs.”  What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander, no?  And what does she mean by “Jewish” land?  How can a piece of land be intrinsically Jewish or anything else?  Did God say when he created it that only a Jew could ever own it?

At any rate, pure business, which is what this should deal should be if Israel is based on a capitalist rather than a Jewish cronyist model, seems to have taken a back seat to Jewish jingoism.  Another complicating factor was that one of the partners in the failed venture is the brother of Jerusalem’s nationalist, anti-Palestinian mayor.  It would look bad to the mayor and his political backers for a Jewish venture to be sold to a Palestinian.  A decisive vote on accepting the Palestinian offer has been postponed. And now there are rumors of an American-Jewish white knight whose aim is to torpedo the Palestinian offer.

Whatever racialist motives there were for delaying a vote and proceeding with Al-Masri’s offer weren’t reflected in the buyer’s own statement of his interest and intent:

This is business.  I’m no politician.  But rather a businessman of Palestinian nationality who knows how to work.  If my business benefits my own people, then I feel even better.

What alarms the Jewish investors and residents is that Al-Masri plans to complete the construction of the remaining 300 units in the complex and sell them to middle-class Palestinian buyers.  The Palestinian portion of the development would be separated physically, according to the description offered by Ynet, from the Jewish portion.  One of the fears being bruited about is that if Al-Masri does take over the project he will refuse to sell to Jews out of Palestinian nationalist motives.

No one yet knows the identity of the Jewish investor-spoiler who’s trying to take the project out from under Al-Masri.  There is a rumor that it may be Sheldon Adelson, though I don’t know how much weight to give to it.  Of course, Irving Moskowitz is another possibility though I believe he lives in Israel now and I’m not sure I’d describe him as “American” as the article described the mystery man.

If the Palestinian offer is spurned then I think it becomes impossible to say that Jerusalem isn’t an apartheid city.  If parts of the city are inalienably Jewish and may not be purchased by a Palestinian even under the terms of Israel’s capitalist system, then what else can you call it?

Jerusalem’s Pisgat Ze’ev: Arabs Raus!

Thursday, December 16th, 2010
moshe ben zikri

Moshe Ben Zikri, Jerusalem council leader, believer in Jewish racial purity and superiority (Ron Shmueli)

The Jerusalem settlement of Pisgat Ze’ev, named for rightist Revisionist leader Zeev Jabotinsky, knows how to handle Arabs.  Just take it from Moshe Ben Zikri, recently elected “community adminstrator” (in Chicago he’d be called the ward boss or council leader) for the neighborhood.  His most critical task: fighting the Arab menace, the campaign to take control of the community from its rightful Jewish residents.  How will he do this?  By levying a hefty $30,000 fine on any resident who sells an apartment to an unapproved tenant.  Who approves?  The Jewish residents, of course.

Among Ben Zikri’s convictions: that there is an Arab “fire” (yes, it appears the Carmel fire has become the reference du jour in the Israeli press) consuming Pisgat Ze’ev.  His goal?  To keep the neighborhood Jewish.  That means, Arabs raus.  Local Jewish hoodlums burned down Palestinian stores and beat up mixed couples who met there or just plain Arab teenagers who wanted to go to the mall.  Ben Zikri, of course, denies any connection to such violence.  It’s all good Germans, er Jews taking matters into their own hands without any direction from him.  The Shabak however, may disagree, since it summoned him for a chat a few months ago.

That seems not to have prevented residents from awarding four of the nine local council seats to Zikari’s faction, which won him the top job.  This means he is an elected official with a government budget representing the citizens of not just his neighborhood, but all of Jerusalem and by extension, Israel.  It would be as if David Duke actually won that election when he ran for governor of Louisiana.

How did the good Kahanist win?

I told them the truth.  That our enemies are taking control.  Our girls are falling into their snares.  And good residents are simply leaving when they discover they have an Arab neighbor.

For some history: in 2004, Israeli built the Separation Wall to separate Pisgat Ze’ev from the West Bank.  As a result, East Jerusalem Palestinian residents found the neighborhood a desirable one and moved in in numbers.  This is the alien influx that worries Herr Ben Zikri so, who estimates their are currently 550 Arab families polluting the Jewish gene pool:

The come here with the goal of conquering us from within.  This might take the form of crime. or perhaps just the “taking” of our women.  Then they make war against us.  People sell their apartments to Arabs and that’s how they’ll take over building by building.  Our goal is to keep the neighborhood Jewish so our girls won’t find themselves married and living in the [Arab] villages across the Shuafat highway.

He plans to force residents to sign a legal document that ensures that owners cannot sell to an unapproved buyer, otherwise they are subject to the fine.  All nice and legal according to him.  Isn’t it nice when you can exploit the law to enforce Kahanist/Nazi-type notions of racial purity like this?

Isaiah Weeps: Jewish National Fund, GOD-TV Erase Israeli Bedouin Village to Bring Jesus’ Second Coming

Monday, December 6th, 2010
god tv jewish national fund forest erases bedouin village

Sign celebrating GOD-TV/Jewish National Fund forest eradicating Bedouin village, Al Araqib

After researching this post and watching the video transcribed below, I don’t know whether to cry or scream at the grievous injustices done to Israel’s Bedouin in the name of the Jewish people (the Jewish National Fund) and Christians the world over (GOD-TV).

The Israeli government is hoping the seventh time is the charm in their efforts to eradicate the Israeli Bedouin village of Al-Araqib.  That’s how many times they’re destroyed it only to have its inhabitants return and rebuild it once more.  In fact, the steadfastness of these indigenous residents of the Negev reminds me of the Biblical Prophets exhorting the Jews to cling to their Land no matter what evil befalls them.

Now, Israeli State thieves have come upon a new scam to make the destruction of the place more thorough and long-lasting.  They’ve enlisted the Jewish National Fund, whose forests have already disappeared hundreds of former Israeli Palestinian villages uprooted during the Nakba.  JNF together with the Israel Lands Administration which claims the Bedouin land on behalf of the State,  brought their bulldozers to plant a new forest that will cover the ground on which Al-Araqib stands.  As if that wasn’t shocking enough, JNF’s partner in this crimes is even more astonishing: the Christian Zionist evangelical GOD-TV.

Neve Gordon just wrote about this in The Nation and suggested I do further research and publish on this tragedy.  I also commend the activism of the Negev Coexistence Forum, which is fighting the good fight on behalf of Al Araqib’s rightful residents.

Those who read this blog know I wrote several posts on the destruction of the village a few weeks ago by thousands of Israeli Border Police along with armored vehicles.  The devastation of this place, which has been the residents’ home for generations, and going back much earlier than the creation of the State in 1948, is worse than a tragedy.  It is truly an evil deed hatched by a nation calling itself a Jewish state, thus deprecating, even figuratively disappearing its non-Jewish citizens.

al araqib burned

What you won't see on GOD-TV: Al Araqib residents resist Israeli government efforts to eradicate their village

Now, Israel feels it needs to add a final exclamation point to its efforts to wipe out Al Araqib.  It will no longer need to demolish the village every few weeks once a forest grows and subsumes any civilization that once existed there.  It will be like the thick Central American jungle blotting out the Mayan ruins to the naked eye centuries after the magnificent cities were emptied of their inhabitants by flood, fire or other disaster.

Planting a forest on the site of a Palestinian Israeli village is a tried and true tactic used by the early Israeli state to eradicate remnants of Palestinian civilization lost to the Nakba, when 750,000 Israeli Palestinians were expelled just before and during what is commonly known as the War of Independence.  Today’s Zionist JNF/ILA apparatchiks seem to think the same ploy will work in the Negev.  But it won’t and can’t because the whole world (or least this blog and its readers) is watching.  When the world watches evil unfold it cannot take hold as firmly and deeply.  We know where evil lies and we can uproot it at a future time.  We will not forget Al Araqib nor those who violently wiped away its existence.  The evil they do will follow them; or at least we will.

If anyone needed evidence of the fact that the nationalists extremists running this Israeli government have made unholy alliance with Christian Zionist extremists, there can be no better example than this.  This sign proudly erected a few hundred feet from where Al Araqib lies boasts not only that GOD-TV is partnering with the JNF is destroying a Bedouin community–it has the chutzpah to quote Isaiah.  This brilliant prophet committed to justice and morality is being exploited to whitewash pure evil.  It would make the man who proclaimed these words cry out in his anger and his shame:

isaiah

The prophet Isaiah weeps: woe unto evangelicals 'who call evil good.'

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil.

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips.

What do you mean by beating my people to pieces, and grinding the faces of the poor?

He looked for judgement, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

When you see images of the young, green saplings planted by JNF juxtapose this image with the following news of the devastation the Israeli government wrought in 2004 on these same fields when they were planted and harvested by the native Bedouin:

…The authorities stepped up the pressure on the Araqib to leave by spraying powerful herbicides on their crops, making the young shoots shrivel and die in the following weeks.  It was the third time the Araqib’s crops had been sprayed in the past two years by a government agency, the Israel Lands Authority.

“This time we hurriedly took what crops we could for feed,” says Abu Darim. “We made the mistake of giving them to our animals. Nearly 400 of the sheep miscarried.”

The recent campaign of crop-spraying by the authorities – more than 6000 acres have been destroyed over a wide area of the Negev in the last two years – is not the only weapon being used by the state.

Over the past 12 months, there has also been a wave of house demolitions, making nearly 2000 bedouin homeless. At least three mosques have also been destroyed.

It seems the good Christian folk at GOD-TV don’t want just anyone making the desert bloom.  They want only Jews to do so.  Bedouin are the wrong sort of people for them.

If you read the GOD-TV site, you’ll find the convenient and miraculous discovery of an ancient Christian monastery in an internal Israeli settlement dubbed Givot Bar:

While clearing land as part of Israel’s project to reclaim the desert as suitable residential ground, a buried ‘world’ was unveiled. This historical gem has revealed buildings and artifacts from an ancient Christian community who lived in the Holy Land over 1500 years ago! This location is where some of the first Christian gathered to worship God. At Givot Bar in the Negev stands an old Farmhouse and Byzantine Church building – from as early as the 6th Century. Historical artifacts like an ancient wine-press and water cistern also point to a lifestyle of centuries gone by.

Such a “discovery” mirrors similar archaeological finds at digs in Silwan and other Arab communities which the far right settlement movement wishes to expel for political purposes to establish Jewish presence and supremacy.  This is the use of history and archaeology to settle political disputes.  Similary, Givot Bar is nothing more than an internal Israeli settlement meant to displace not Palestinians as in the West Bank, but indigenous Israeli Bedouin, citizens of the State of Israel.

Cook notes that the Al Araqib destruction is part of a larger government effort to consolidate Bedouin in large central population centers so that Jewish settlements can take their place:

…A government plan, personally approved a year ago by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and backed by $200 million, [will] force the rural Bedouin off their lands and into a handful of urban reservations the state is building for them.

…The stakes are high. The government wants the huge land reservoir of the Negev - two-thirds of Israel’s total territory -for Jewish immigration over the coming decades, and possibly for settlers evacuated from the West Bank and Gaza if peace ever arrives.

In 2002 the World Zionist Organisation (WZO) announced plans to start building settlements to bring 350,000 Jewish immigrants to the Galilee and the Negev the first time the WZO has funded settlements outside the occupied Palestinian territories in 26 years.

…If the Bedouin can be forced out of their villages, their place will be taken by 14 exclusive Jewish settlements and dozens more private farmsteads, modelled on Sharon’s own huge agricultural estate in the Negev, known as Sycamore Ranch.

This phenomenon provides proof that the Israeli Occupation isn’t the only injustice perpetrated by the State, but that Israel citizens too suffer.  The expulsion of the Bedouin is a contemporary iteration of the Nakba meant to reinforce the supremacy of Israel’s Jewish citizens.

Who has the JNF made common cause with?  GOD-TV, a group which in 2009 gave JNF $500,000 for this forest (IRS 990 pdf) as preparation for Jesus’ return.  This is precisely how the project is described in the group’s IRS 990 form:

“The grant to the Jewish National Fund was to plant trees in Israel, to participate in dressing the Holy Land for the return of Jesus.”

In other words, world Jewry is embracing a group which is aiding evangelical radicals in their goal of bringing about the Second Coming of Jesus.  Is this why we collected coins in our blue JNF pushkes in Hebrew school lo those many years ago?

god-tv Rory and Bo Praying

Rory Alec and Bo 'preparing to dress the Holy Land' with trees 'for Jesus' Return'

Now, let’s read excerpts of the transcript of the following video that GOD-TV’s owner-host Rory Alec (legal name, Rory A. Stephen) made on the site of Al Araqib, all the while never mentioning a word about this eradicated Bedouin village on whose lands he stood:

[Camera pans over hills of Al Araqib as Rory Alec comes into view.  Superimposed on his image is a full-frame Israeli flag waving as he addresses the camera]

It’s quite amazing Precious One how the Lord has led us as a ministry, GOD-TV, to connect with this land, this land that God loves so much.

…[Alec gives a summary of Jewish history refracted through evangelical theology ending with the expulsion of Jews from their land].  And then the prophets describe something extraordinary, how God will bring His people back to what has become a barren land. In 1948, we see something extraordinary in the history of the nations of the earth, where a majority of the United Nations agree after much prayer, and of course the prophecy is fulfilled and the land is reborn in a day.  The nation in May 1948.

Here we are in the Negev [Alec turns to look at the surrounding landscape] and something the Lord put in my spirit, an instruction from God which was, “Rory and Wendy,” (we’re the God TV family) “prepare the land for the return of my Son.” And my spirit jumped and I said “Father in heaven, how do we do that?”  And the Lord said to us, and this was three or four years ago, “Plant a million trees.”

I believe that’s what I heard the spirit of God, in a still small voice, say to us.  And we shared that with you and I remember…we said for every gift…you’d send in, we would thank you for your gift by representing you and your family with this little tree, with a little sapling.  Well, welcome to the God TV Forest and Bo this is amazing.  [Rory, reading Isaiah 41:18 from JNF’s God TV Forest sign],  “I will turn the deserts into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.”

This is the beginning of, my goodness, right across Israel, how many trees have we planted so far?…

Bo Sander:  So far we have planted in the ground about a half a million trees, half a million trees…

You know, Saints (addressing television audience), the extraordinary thing is the Lord put it in our spirits that we should plant a million trees to prepare the land for the return of his Son, and I tell you Jesus is coming back soon!  This ministry is about a billion souls, and you and I will be fired up and stirred up to go out and share Jesus…He’s coming back and the Lord is saying to us, the God TV family, prepare the land and this is the land that needs preparing.  This is the desert, brother!

Bo:   It is wonderful and you know, this is where his people [Jews returning to Israel] are going to stay when they come.  And the Scripture also says…that the desert needs to grow and develop, because His people are coming back.  This is aliyah and the Jewish people are coming back to the land, and they need to have a place to stay and to live.  And this is part of the development of the land, and this is scripture being fulfilled.

Rory:  In front of us…And I know some of you are skeptical about Israel.  Not everything the government of Israel does is correct, but you and I have been instructed by God Almighty to stand in the gap, to be watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem, so to speak, to intercede and to pray for.  And God does declare in his Word, his sovereign unchangeable Word, that he who blesses Abraham, he who blesses the seed of Abraham, he who blesses the land that God has promised and given, he who blesses the Jewish people – Israel and Judah – God will bless them, irrespective of what the Israelites or the Israelis are doing.  We are praying for salvation, we are praying for blessing.  But you and I have been instructed, as the body of Yeshua, to stand in the gap, and intercede that the divine will of God takes place in this nation, this miraculous nation…

Bo: I just want to emphasize what you and our viewers at GOD-TV have done here in Israel.  It’s so appreciated.  And the government here, the Jewish National Fund, Land of Promise, the Givot Bar village here, all of them are super-excited about what is happening here.  How we can come in and support them and help them in this very difficult time. It’s just so wonderful to see.

Rory: You and I are bringing life in all its forms…you and I are fulfilling a prophecy that was declared by Hosiah and Ezechiel and Hez…literally the whole shebang.  We are being obedient in the hands of the Lord.  We are His hands, His heart, His…we’re preparing the land by His spirit…

Everyone who gives a red cent to this outfit should know that it is displacing the legitimate, indigenous inhabitants of this land, the Bedouin.  And lest donors not care, let’s point out to the Internal Revenue Service that GOD-TV’s 501c3 entity, the Angel Christian Television Trust, Inc., gives the heksher of the U.S. government to these evangelical fanatic efforts to root out Israeli inhabitants of this land.  That means that once again the Obama administration is allowing U.S. non profits to undermine express U.S. policy toward Israel through supporting the violent supplanting of Israel’s inhabitants by a forest.  Speaking about donations, Angel Christian TV’s 2009 990 notes that Rory and his wife Wendy earned approximately $450,000 that year.  Flogging Jesus in the Holy Land is nice work if you can get it.

Lest this transcript hasn’t shocked you enough, let’s tell you a bit more about GOD-TV and its fanatical bedfellows.  Some of the most popular stars of this evangelical media enterprise are Joyce Meyer, Creflo Dollar, Benny Hinn,  and Kenneth Copeland, founders of the Prosperity Gospel movement, who in 2007 were under investigation by Sen. Charles Grassley for using their non-profit status to “shield their lavish lifestyle.”

According to Rachel Tabachnick, one of the closest students of evangelical theology, GOD-TV embraces not just Dispensationalist theology, which is a more quiescent form of evangelism, but a far more aggressive and radical evangelism:

God TV does feature Dispensationalists, but the network also promotes another more aggressive and more virulent End Times theology that is becoming dominant in Christian Zionist activism. This is what is sometimes known as “End Times warriors.”  This is NOT Dispensationalism – it is worse. Dispensationalism is passive to some extent because believers have to wait for the “Rapture”…for the End Times horrors to begin…In the End Times theology to which I was referring, there is no waiting for the Rapture and humans have the mandate to advance the End Times.

God TV features New Apostolic leaders who call themselves “apostles and prophets,” and who reject Dispensationalism…It does not yet have a convenient label, but is a mid-Tribulation or post-Tribulation premillennialism…a form of “Dominion” theology that requires Christians to take supremacy over the earth before Jesus can return…

This helps to explain how Christian Zionist leaders like John Hagee are getting away with claiming that their End Times prophecy is benign and Jewish leaders shouldn’t be concerned.  In the Dispensational timeline the reign of the Antichrist, apocalyptic battles, suffering of the Jews, and other horrors of the Tribulation period don’t begin until after the born again believers are “Raptured” or snatched from the earth.  They have to wait…for this divine intervention.  Jewish leaders who embrace Hagee say that they don’t believe this will ever take place, so there’s nothing to worry about.  No Rapture, no Tribulation, no problem.  But most of John Hagee’s CUFI leaders and hosts are no longer Dispensational!  They have made the transition to the more aggressive theology in which believers can…advance the prophetic clock.

In this rapidly growing Dominionist theology, born again believers…fight the Antichrist and evil instead of watching from the grandstands of heaven…Many Charismatic evangelicals are being taught to forget about being Raptured and prepare to fight…This is one of the factors creating the current hysteria in the U.S. about the Antichrist and his one-world government and why conspiracy theories are so rampant. (Christian Identity and associated white supremacist groups have always rejected the Rapture and taught that they must prepare to fight.)

Rory and Wendy Alec, like most leading religious broadcasters are Charismatics.  In the Charismatic stream of evangelicalism, this…embrace of Dominionism is taking place at an incredible rate, taught largely by leaders calling themselves “apostles and prophets.”  Wendy Alec is a self-proclaimed prophet and she features apostles like Mike Bickle on GOD-TV regularly.  Bickle leads a movement called the International House of Prayer (IHOP) to train young people to be the End Times warriors who will be endowed with supernatural powers to purge the earth of evil (and convert Jews) and bring about Jesus’ return. IHOP’s “Israel Mandate” is part of a coordinated international effort to support Messianic Jewish ministries.  Unconverted Jews are viewed as blocking the Christian 1000-year utopia from taking place.  Christians United for Israel (CUFI) director Robert Stearns works with the “Israel Mandate” and is also co-founder of the Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem which has a similar agenda.

…God TV is…deeply immersed in apocalyptic narratives merged with “New World Order” conspiracy theories. Each year they run a series that last a couple of months called Apocalypse and the End Times featuring leading bible prophecy experts and conspiracy theorists claiming that the globe is under attack by a cabal of demonic forces/global elites…[It constitutes] ”New World Order” conspiracy theories being marketed as prophecy.  In short…1930s-style paranoid conspiracy theories with underlying anti-Semitic themes are being marketed internationally as End Times prophecy. GOD-TV is careful with their treatment of Jews and do not overtly include Jews in the demonic Illuminati/Masonic conspiracy, although Jews are clearly the target historically in these narratives, and almost all of these end times prophecy experts teach that the termination of Judaism is necessary prior to the Millennial Kingdom on earth.

This is the source of much of the fear and hysteria in our society about a one-world government, one-world currency, imminent loss of American sovereignty to the U.N. or foreign troops, Federal Reserve conspiracy theory, imprisoning Christian patriots in concentration camps, etc.

The Apocalypse and the End Times series has featured End Times prophecy experts including:

-Tim LaHaye, author of the Left Behind series with over 65 million copies sold

-Paul McGuire, well-known End Times prophecy writer /New World Order conspiracy theorist and professor at Jack Hayford’s Kings Seminary which also trains Messianics for the “redemption of all Israel”

-Mike Bickle, (see above). Lou Engle, who heads the anti-abortion, anti-gay “The Call” is also based at IHOP Kansas City with Bickle.

-Grant Jeffrey, End Times prophecy writer/New World Order conspiracy theorist, author of the “documentary” Shadow Government: How the Global Elite Plan to Destroy Your Democracy and Your Freedom.   Jeffrey was lead speaker along with Karl Rove at event in Toronto that was intended to parallel the G-20 Summit, hosted by Canada’s CUFI director.

-Chuck Missler, merges end times prophecy with alien/UFO conspiracies

God TV televised the revival of Todd Bentley held in Florida in the summer of 2008 which included kicking and head butting severely-ill people to expel the demons during faith healing ceremonies.  Bentley claimed that the revival was healing people from all over the world as well as reviving dead people. He is a heavily-tattooed former sex offender who has been embraced by the “apostles” as having special powers.

God TV televises “The Call” events of Lou Engle.  These are virulently anti-abortion and anti-gay but also stress proselytizing Israeli Jews.

Rory Alec’s wife, Wendy Alec, calls herself a “Prophet Evangelist.”  She writes a Christian fantasy series called the Chronicle of Brothers, which chronicles Lucifer’s fall from heaven and his campaign to contaminate the DNA of humanity.   It is heavily influenced by New World Order “theology” and conspiracy theories, which can be read in this passage which takes place on September 10, 2001 in front of the Council of the 13 Illuminati led by the Jesuit priest, Lorcan De Molay, who is contemplating the horrors of the following day:

“He surveyed the men seated before him.  The Council of Thirteen, the highest orders of the Committee of 300, the Black Nobility of Venice.  The Supreme Mother Council of the of the thirty-third-degree masons of the Scottish Rite.

He scanned the faces of the chairman of the Club of Rome, the Federal Reserve, the Bilderberger Group, the International Monetary Fund, the Bohemian Grove, the Lucius Trust, his gaze finally resting on the Frater Superior and Grand Tribunal of the Ordo Templi Orienti.

The Grand Masters of the Illuminati.

The secret Illuminati who controlled the American government.

Who controlled every government of the Eastern and Western world.

Who in turn were controlled by him.

Lorcan De Molay.”

When the Jewish National Fund and Israeli government lie down with dogs like this is there any doubt they’ll get up with fleas???  You make your bed, you lie in it.

Thank you to Rachel Tabachnik for helping transcribe the video and her research on GOD-TV.

Ethan Bronner: Israel-Palestine Conflict ‘Largely Drained of Violence’

Monday, November 22nd, 2010
palestinan in mourning

Palestinian confirms Bronner's 'draining of violence'...except in case of her own loved one, killed by the IDF Nov. 13 2010 (Reuters)

I like to follow Ethan Bronner’s writing for the N.Y. Times not so much because I’ll learn much, but rather to see how torturous the writing and thinking of a liberal Zionist must be in covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for a major western newspaper.  And his report in today’s Week in Review doesn’t disappoint.  In an article purporting to attempt to explain why the U.S. persists in seeking peace despite the fact that neither party seems to want it as much as we, he writes this howler:

It is worth noting that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been largely drained of deadly violence in the past few years…The dispute is calmer than it has been in years, which, in the brutal logic of the Middle East, means that neither side is eager right now for the necessary compromises. So why push so hard?

The first sentence of course displays not just blindness, but complete absence.  Where was Bronner during the Gaza war in which 1,400 were killed, a war which ended in early 2009?  Not to mention the Lebanon war of 2006, admittedly not directly tied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but certainly at least a kissing-cousin to it.  At least 1,000 were killed in that war.  Aside from this, he’s neglecting the hundreds of Palestinians who’ve been killed in those “past few years” by Israel’s often rampaging “security” forces.

What Bronner really means to say is that the past few years have been drained of violence against Israel or perhaps that relations between Israel and the West Bank are drained of violence, which is far different than what he actually wrote.  And because Israel faces relatively little violence against it, it is Israel which feels no real urgency to compromise.  It is an outright lie to say that the Palestinians are not eager for necessary compromises for peace.  They are, and how.  But they are not eager to give away the store BEFORE there is a serious settlement proposal even on the table.

Rather, it is ISRAEL which shows itself unwilling to compromise.  As everyone and their brother (and sister) now say, we all know the outlines of a settlement.  Who is it who refuses to return to 1967 borders, refuses to share Jerusalem as capital of a Palestinian state, refuses to even negotiate the Right of Return on the basis of the Geneva Initiative supported by 40% of Israelis?

What is it that the Palestinians are refusing to negotiate now?  A settlement freeze that excludes their future capital, East Jerusalem.  If Ehud Barak were Palestinian he’d doubtless agree with this stance just as he’s already said he’d be a militant if he were born Palestinian.  Doubtless he’d also be dead by now in that event, but no matter.

It is hard to tell in Bronner’s writing whether he’s deliberately lying about recent history or whether he’s simply so vacant that he can’t be bothered to consider narratives outside of the narrow ones to which he subjects his readers.  What’s more, I find it shocking that Bronner’s editor wouldn’t have the least knowledge of recent Israeli-Palestinian history to know that the sentence above is a total fraud.

‘Imagining Heschel,’ New Play Features Richard Dreyfuss

imagining heschelRichard Dreyfuss is performing in a concert reading, Imagining Heschel, from an exchange of letters between America’s seminal Jewish theologian, Abraham Joshua Heschel and a Roman Catholic Cardinal.  Here’s how the website summarizes the production:

Imagining Heschel is a concert reading exploring the private conversations between Cardinal Augustin Bea and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel from 1962 – 1973, when Heschel was asked to aid the Vatican Council in formally exonerating the Jews for the death of Christ – a crucial repudiation of anti-Semitism.

Colin Greer’s imagined discussions between these philosophical giants in the midst of the numerous struggles of the late 1960s – including the war in Vietnam which Heschel strenuously opposed, and the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, which he supported – lend enormous insight into contemporary issues of peaceful resolution in the Middle East. Imagining Heschel raises important questions about the justification of violence by any faith, and the limits of forgiveness.

What is especially interesting is that the story is ultimately not one of interfaith dialogue triumphing over religious differences, but rather of the increasing violence and evil of modern society turning both men away from each other.  Heschel grows increasingly disenchanted with the Pope’s unwilling to formally exonerate the Jews on the charge of deicide and Cardinal Bea is shocked by Heschel’s endorsement of the violence inherent in the Israeli triumph in the Six Day War.

As an undergraduate, I studied at Jewish Theological Seminary when Heschel taught there, but it was toward the end of his life and I was at the very beginning of my own Jewish college studies so I never heard him teach or even speak. One of my great regrets. Sometimes it takes getting older to realize the things one should’ve grasped in youth, but never did.

Heschel championed the incipient civil rights movement in America and became its strongest Jewish adherent. He joined Martin Luther King as well in opposing the Vietnam War. The theologian who derived from Hasidic royalty was one of the greatest humanists of the 20th century. Neither the century nor American Judaism would’ve been the same without him.

I have not seen the play, but if you live in or near New York it’s a treat you shouldn’t miss. If I had a chance to spend an evening with Heschel, even an actor playing him, I wouldn’t turn it down.

The video below is a long colloquy between the playwright and Heschel’s daughter, the inimitable Prof. Susannah Heschel.  She in fact captures so perfectly the term tikun olam that graces this blog, that it’s worth quoting:

In Hasidic thought, what we do has cosmic ramifications. That is, when I do an act that is kind or good…when I do a mitzvah I give strength to God. I help bring about redemption.

Now, in Hasidic thought the mitzvahs they’re talking about have to do with making Kiddush and prayers, which I say with the kavanah (“intention”) that I should bring about a redemption of the Kadosh Baruch Hu (“Holy One”) and the Shekhinah (“Spirit” or God’s “Indwelling Presence”) through the mitzvah.

My father broadened it [to include] the mitzvahs that you do beyn adam l’chavero that is, from one person to another. The social responsibility of one human being for another, that too gives strength to God.

He’s expanding that Hasidic theology in a broader direction to include all the commandments we have in Jewish law that are very much about the relations we have one with another in all dimensions–on a personal dimension and a business dimension. Everything. That too brings redemption, gives strength to God.

There you have it, a perfect definition of tikun olam in the context it’s used in the title of this blog.

Going Rate for Settlement Freeze: $33.33-Million a Day

hillary and bibi

Hillary and Bibi look a little the worse for wear after 7 hours negotiating which candy Israel would get for agreeing to freeze extension (Mary Altaffer/AP)

America is used to buying its way to quasi-peace in Iraq and Afghanistan and appears to be doing something similar by buying Israel’s acquiescence in a 90-day, partial settlement freeze.  The going price: $33.33-million a day for the entire 90 day process [thanks readers, for correcting my math!].  Now, we know what Hillary and Bibi were doing in that New York hotel suite for seven hours earlier this week.  It wasn’t canoodling!  But she was virtually giving away the store.

As a way of computing the comparative value of Palestinian obeisance.  Clinton earlier this week held a press conference announcing a new U.S. contribution to the PA.  Pricetag?  $150-million (or about $1.5-million per day).  The first thing the Palestinians need to learn how to do is drive a harder bargain.  They bought ‘em cheap.

I say ‘partial’ because Israel will be free to continue “Judaizing” East Jerusalem by unlimited building there, which includes 1,300 units announced earlier this month.  Such “Judaizing” settlement building doesn’t include the additional quasi-legal expropriation and pilfering of existing Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem coördinated by settler land-theft groups like Elad and Irving Moskowitz’s syndicate.  The building freeze will also not apply to public buildings like hospitals, schools, police stations anywhere in the West Bank or Jerusalem.

f-35 jet fighter

Bibi's candy store gift

I remain mystified why this freeze extension was so important it was worth paying so dearly for in security guarantees and weapons sales.  After all, this is practically a year’s worth of U.S. military aid to Israel in three months!  The $3-billion amounts to the cost of 20 new U.S. F-35 fighter jets (one wonders to what mischief Israel could put them regarding a few military adventures it is angling to take on…).

Not to mention, the U.S. has also agreed to veto any Arab/Palestinian effort to bring its proposal for recognition of statehood before the Security Council (at least for the next three months).  Further, this statement from Obama’s in-house version of Dennis Ross, Dan Shapiro, indicates the U.S. will combat world-wide “de-legitimization” (a new pro-Israel hasbarist buzzword) efforts against Israel as part of this bargain:

They included increased U.S. diplomatic opposition to efforts to delegitimize Israel in international fora, continuing to block efforts to revive the Goldstone Report at the United Nations, promising to block condemnation of Israel at the United Nations for its raid on the Gaza-bound Mavi Marmara, and defeating resolutions aimed to expose Israel’s nuclear program at the IAEA, and increasing pressure on Iran and Syria to stop their nuclear and proliferation activities.

Not only do we give these guys a jet fighter armada, we destroy any moral credibility we might have on the world stage on their behalf.  Now, I’m really starting to get mad!

What can Obama have in his mind that he can achieve with this?  Certainly, he can now get Abbas to come back to the negotiating table.  So we resume a semblance of negotiating process without any substance.  The Times article says the U.S. believes in the coming three months it can get both sides to agree on what land will be retained by the PA and what land will be retained by Israel.  After that, Israel may resume building in only the areas which both sides have confirmed will remain Israeli.  Frankly, I don’t see it.  Neither side has come anywhere near such an agreement previously and not for lack of trying.  Most recently, Olmert presented such formal border proposals to Abbas who sniffed at them and replied: “Not good enough.”  What’s changed?  Has Israel’s offer sweetened (puh-leeze)?  Has Palestinian desperation increased?  Not really.  So what gives?  I say nothin’.

Is this what was so important to the president to achieve?  To save face before the American people so he can tell them for the next three months there IS a peace process…until it breaks down once again as it invariably will.  I know he’s had a hard Asia trip and took a shellacking in the mid-terms.  But was this worth it?

You see, there is one major ingredient missing: commitment.  Not just Israel’s commitment, which is the major missing factor.  But surprising as it may seem, Obama’s commitment as well.  Like most other American presidents before him with the exception of Jimmy Carter and George Bush pere, they come in with blizzards of words and precious little in the way of real gumption.  In Middle East peace negotiation, you can’t get there without it.  And Obama definitely ain’t got it.  He’s got the razzle-dazzle.  He’s sort of a political version of the Shyne character I wrote about yesterday, with his [Shyne's] elegant fedora and shades.  But you need more than a glib tongue [Obama's] in this region.  You need deeds, you need heart, you need guts.  Obama’s got brain, but no brawn.

I was also concerned that Hillary Clinton’s statement after her latest love fest with Bibi in New York indicated that the U.S. had already negotiated away an issue key to the Palestinian interlocutors:

In the second, she spoke of an agreement that “reconciles the Palestinian goal of an independent and viable state, based on the 1967 lines, with agreed swaps, and the Israeli goal of a Jewish state…

So all Bibi needs to say now is: the Yanks agreed we’re a Jewish state, why not the Palestinians?  I think the U.S. just gave Bibi an enormous hunk of halva with that $3-billion.

After Deportation, Shyne Turns to Black-Hats for Redemption, to Score Points for Immigration Appeal

shyne in haredi black hat

Shyne dons ultra-Orthodox threads lookin' for redemption & U.S. visa (Ricki Rosen)

Since the latter days of Meyer Lansky till now, Israel seems to embody in the minds of sinners, charlatans and other hypsters a place of redemption and moral repentance.  Most of us if we sin, find ways of repenting quietly, in private.  But there are others in this world, largely gangsters, celebrities and others of that ilk who need to do everything writ large.  And for some reason, they’re drawn to the Land of Israel as a special place, a land of last chances and lost causes, a land that embraces misfits and turns them into something pure and worthy.

Now add to the list the rapper Shyne, ne Jamaal Barrow.  Not content merely to serve his ten years in prison for wounding club patrons in a gunfight, he’s got to tell the world that he’s taken his repentance to a whole other level.  In fact, he’s taken his case directly to the man Upstairs: he’s converted to Judaism.  And not just any Judaism, but black-hat ultra-Orthodox Judaism.  And I’ve got to say that I’ve never seen anyone look more elegant in Haredi black hat than Shyne.  He’s really stylin’!

But there are a few holdovers from his former life that Shyne can’t seem to shake:

“There’s nothing in the Chumash that says I can’t drive a Lamborghini,” and “nothing in the Halacha about driving the cars I like, about the lifestyle I live.”

A bit of explication is in order.  Of course, his Haredi guides love his Lamborghinis and would tell him Judaism has nothing against them, because they know that one of theirs who drives a Lamborghini will have lots of money left over the fund their various Haredi yeshivas and other charities.  Both sides here are exploiting the other: Shyne is using Judaism to wipe his slate clean of some nasty behavior; and Shyne’s ultra-Orthodox teachers are exploiting his fame to advance their own agenda.  They’re hoping he’ll drop a big check in their lap one of these days.

I do so love the comment about the Chumash not prohibiting him driving a Lamborghini since the first one wasn’t built until 1963, while the Chumash is at least a few years older.  I don’t even think the Model T was a gleam in Moses eye, myself.  But maybe Shyne knows better.  And as for halacha and Jewish ethics, they do have quite a bit to say about the ways in which one should present oneself in society and truly observant Jews are never ostentatious in the way Shyne is.  Nor do they brandish pistols and shoot people in clubs.  That’s a definite no-no in our halacha.

But I do have a suggestion: if he wants to become a truly good shot he might consider enlisting in the IDF (which would also love to exploit his fame as much as haredim).  The army could turn him into not just a gangsta and a killa, but a cold-blooded assassin.  It might even be conducive to a future rap career.  Imagine the Palestinian “kills” he could brag about to his audience.

I wondered why Shyne came to Israel after exiting prison till I read in the article that the U.S. deported him, as he was not a citizen.  He is appealing his deportation.  In other words, his conversion is a shameless publicity stunt meant to aid in his regaining his U.S. residency while also keeping his career in the news.  When he was deported where else could he go?  Belize, where he was born and where his father is prime minister?  Guess daddy didn’t want his son the gunman making things hot for him there.  So he turns to Israel as that pure and holy place which will purge his sin in the eyes of U.S. immigration authorities.

We’ll see.  But even if the U.S. doesn’t budge, there is a flourishing hip hop scene in Israel, even among Orthodox Jews.  So maybe he can find a home for himself.  But if you ask me, Israel is a waystation, a way to get where he really wants to go, and that ain’t Jerusalem.
