Protesting Israeli Diplomat Joins Sheikh Jarrah Demonstration

Sunday, March 6th, 2011
ilan baruch sheikh jarrah

Former Israeli ambassador Ilan Baruch at Sheikh Jarrah protest (Solidarity Sheikh Jarrah)

Among those joining last Friday’s weekly Sheikh Jarrah demonstration was recently retired Israeli senior diplomat Ilan Baruch.  This offers the government a double whammy.  First Baruch resigns in protest over the government’s charade of a peace plan which “disgusted” him and drove him into retirement.  Then within days he attends the Sheikh Jarrah protest, one of the most visible and vociferous public protests against the government’s land grab policies in East Jerusalem.

Haaretz reports that this week’s demonstration was especially violent and pitted the Solidarity activists and Palestinians against security forces and right-wing goons itching for a fight.

Shabak Alleged to Have Murdered Detained 16 Year-Old Israeli Palestinian Boy

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Important Update: After numerous attempts to confirm the information published here and being unable to do so, I am sorry to say that at best the account is uncorroborated, and at worst it’s possible the information was not correct (or perhaps credible) to begin with.

I will continue my attempts to verify the details.   Meanwhile many thanks to those Israelis who went out of their way to make inquiries on my behalf and apologies to my readers if this story turns out to have been wrong.

An Israeli source confirms the horrifying news that one of the five Israeli Palestinians detained a few days ago in secret by the Shabak has been killed today (or possibly yesterday) in custody in Jalameh prison near Haifa.  The victim was Ashraf al-Baladi of the northern Israeli Palestinian village of Sachnin.  Here is a description of what happened to him: he was bound to a chair, he either fell over or was pushed onto the floor. The fall cracked his head open, punctured a lung, and broke a rib.  The secret police didn’t know what to do.  They couldn’t bring him to a hospital for treatment since he’d been secretly detained.

A doctor was summoned but he arrived too late.  The boy died shortly thereafter.

I have asked representatives of Israeli and Israeli Palestinian NGOs to demand an accounting from the Interior Ministry and Shabak.  So far to no avail.  I’m going to renew my appeal to anyone who can contact either agency to tell us whether they have these individuals in custody, and if so where they are held, and under what charges.  Allow them to consult with attorneys.  And account for the death of a minor child while in Shabak detention.

Can’t all of us human rights activists put our heads together and unravel this mystery and force the secret police to account for their actions?

Israeli Settler MK to Huckabee: ‘We’re Connected to This Land No Less Than Your Indians’

mike huckabee at irving moskowitz yeshiva

Mike Huckabee addressing Irving Moskowitz's yeshiva in Arab-rein East Jerusalem (Gali Tibbon Getty/AFP)

Mike Huckabee and Israel’s radical settler movement are almost always fodder for a good laugh.  I thank Ofer Neiman for providing one in the form of an Arutz Sheva article, in which settler MK Nissim Zeev brags about his friendship with Mike Huckabee, who he brought to Israel and hosted last week.  Among the other things Huckabee did was tour and nod approvingly at the Judaization project in East Jerusalem’s Palestinian neighborhoods.

In this photo, he’s pictured addressing a settler yeshiva established with the lucre of Miami-based bingo magnate Irving Moskowitz.  Moskowitz is the very one who stole the Palestinian Shepherd Hotel and partially demolished it last week so he can move in some settler families.  I guess no one told Huckabee that this project flies directly in the face of current U.S. policy as does supporting settler thugs guilty of promoting violence and hooliganism against Palestinians and Jews alike.

But I reserve the biggest laugh for Zeev’s recounting of his discussions with his pal, Mike, who the reporter erroneously credits with being a U.S. senator:

I got together with him to pursue two issues: [international] recognition of Jewish refugees from Arab lands and recognition by the UN of Israel with the status of “indigenous.”  It’s unacceptable that after 2,000 years of exile, we are still characterized as “occupiers.”  Since 2007, there are peoples recognized by the UN as indigenous.  The U.S. also recognizes Indians as indigenous and if it won’t return to them their ancestral lands it will offer reparations.  We too require similar recognition.  Our connection to the land appears in the Bible and we are connected to this land no less than the Indians.

In fact, I’d suggest as a terrific photo-op that Mike bring together a settler chief and an Indian chief and they can both compare war stories.  Maybe the settlers can set up shop on a few reservations and teach tribal leaders who to expand their “settlements” by annexing land belonging to white folk, and force the U.S. government to recognize their land thefts.  I’m sure that’ll go over big in Washington.

Ya gotta hand it to Zeev though, he’s a real joker:

MK Zeev noted that Israel has many friends in the UN and Congress who have only to be asked to make the changes he’s proposing.  I visited Congress, where we have many friends, and many told me it was unfortunate that Israel didn’t make this demand [of Congress].

Zeev said that Huckabee promised to do everything in his power to bring this proposal before the UN…

Go ahead, Mike.  What’s stopping you?  You’re a U.S. senator, aren’t you?  Bring forward a ‘sense of the senate’ resolution recognizing Israeli Jews as indigenous.  Maybe one of the long-lost Indian tribes?  And while you’re at it let’s get Congress to allocate a few billions in reparation for Jews who suffered an “Arab Holocaust” and were expelled from their native lands.  A Jewish Nakba.  Of our very own.  Why should only Arabs get to have one?  Just doesn’t seem fair.  If they get to suffer, why not us as well?

Mike’s not above a little mirth as well.  Among the pithy statements he made while in the Holy Land preparing for Armageddon were that he believed in a Palestinian state, just not in Israel.  Which at first glance might appear to be a conventional endorsement of the two state solution…until you realize that Huckabee embraces the settler narrative that all of Greater Israel including Palestine is Israel.  So he’s in effect telling Palestinians and his own U.S. government to move Palestine somewhere like, say Uganda.  Where have we heard that one before?

Kahanist Orthodox Right Seeks to Make Israeli Commerce Arabrein

lehava kashrut certificate

Lehava's 'Kashrut' certificate: making racism kosher

In Germany, Nazis were proud to empty important segments of society of Jews and make them Judenrein.  Ridding the nation of the noxious influence of Judaism became an idée fixe, an obsession and ideological underpinning of the fascist movement.  I’ve noted here in the past, most recently with the rabbinic editorial calling for death camps to be established for Palestinian Amalekites, how a similar obsession has crept into the consciousness of the radical right Israeli Haredi community.  This is nothing less than a campaign for the same type of racial purification embraced by Nazi Germany.

Reader Cicero forwarded me an extraordinary story in Walla which documents a Jerusalem conference convened by a new rightist group, Lehava (“Flame”) to rid Israeli commerce of the presence of Arabs.  They even created a Kashrut certificate, comparable to ones indicating a restaurant or food product have been produced under Rabbinic supervision.  The certificate is astounding.  The text reads:

Lehava: for the Prevention of Assimilation in the Holy Land

This is to certify that the owner of this business employs only Jews, and not the enemy.

He is faithful to the verse: “Your brother shall live with and among you,” and a partner in the war against assimilation in the land of Israel.

Hebrew Labor [a reference to early Zionist efforts to teach Jewish pioneers manual trades and professions they could never learn in Europe]

One of the conference conveners were quoted as saying:

The majority of instances of young Jewish girls wedding Arabs occurs because they (Arabs) are employed by Jewish businesses…We must force employers to fire the many “enemies” (Arabs) who endanger our daughters.

The initiative is part of a campaign among Israeli markets against employment of Arab workers.  Organizers plan to demand that major retailers honor such a boycott in order to retain their Orthodox customers.  Another slogan offered by organizers is:

Ahmed ben [son of ] Sara: we are obligated to prevent this!

german town judenrein

A German city declares itself Judenrein

From the great geshrei going up from the radical Rabbinical right you’d think miscegenation was an existential plague threatening the very existence of the State, religion and race.  Frankly, I’ve read or heard no figures which indicate that this is a prevalent phenomenon or anything that concerns any Israeli academic specialists, demographers, or any serious observers.  It seems akin to Republican wedge issues like abortion and gay marriage designed to whip the faithful into a frenzy and so retain their loyalty.

This general effort coincides with, and reinforces another major far-right Rabbinic initiative seeking to prohibit religious Jews from renting apartments to Arabs in Israel.  Taken together all of these initiatives recall nothing less than Nazi era racialism rearing its ugly head inside Israel.  Some have gone back to the Nuremberg Race Laws to find eerie echoes in the new Rabbinic promulgations.

One can argue that Israel is a nation composed of secular Jews who want nothing to do with this meshugas.  And that is true.  But the plain fact is that such racist attitudes are a reflection of the views a majority of Israeli Jews and not just the extremists among them.  I wrote here about a national poll that documented the astonishingly racist attitudes among all sectors in Israel, not just the Orthodox.  So in a sense one can argue that the Kahanist Haredim are the “early adopters” of these poisonous views.  But the rest of Israel is not far behind them.

The fact is that Israel’s Orthodox rabbis are political animals.  They know how far they can go before breaking societal taboos against racism and genocidal incitement.  They would not advance these ideas and insist that Orthodox Jews obey them were they not sure that the rest of Israel sympathizes with them to a greater or lesser degree.  The State of Israel could easily quash this nonsense if it had the will or interest in doing so.  These rabbis are wards (er, employees) of the State receiving stipends and salaries for the work they do.  Fire a few of their asses and you’ll see how quickly all this simmers down.  But the current government (and no government I could currently envision) would dare do that.  First, the ministers themselves by and large agree with such views.  And they know that a good share of their voting constituency does too.  So what’s in it for them?  Nothing.

There will be those Jew haters out there who will say to this: “You see, we told you so.  This is what the Jews are.”  To that I say most emphatically, No. This is not what all Jews are. This is what a very small minority of Jews in the world are.  These odious notions derive from an Israel which has enslaved itself to Occupation and hatred of the Palestinians living among them and next door.  This is a boil that must be lanced and the toxins drained off.  This is not a terminal condition for all of Judaism or even all of Israel (though this may be in doubt).  So let’s not make the mistake of joining with the Institute for Historical Review and David Duke in celebrating such sad developments.  For they bring no joy to me and should bring no joy to anyone.

Meir Rotter, Undercover Sheikh Jarrah Cop, Confirmed as Forum Member Inciting Violence Against Demonstrators

Meir Rotter's online identity confirmed as Kafe

Message sent to a Yahoo Group listing Meir Rotter's name (underlined) and mouseover which displays his e mail address: 'kafe1@netvision.net.il'

Yesterday, I reported that Jerusalem undercover police officer, Meir Rotter, son of the founder of the popular internet portal, Rotter.net, had posted messages at his father’s website inciting violence against the peaceful Sheikh Jarrah protesters opposing the Judaizing of East Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods.  I had lots of circumstantial evidence that Meir Rotter, police officer, was Kafe, the Rotter forum member who posted angry, racist rants attacking demonstrators, the Israeli government, the media and everyone except his radical settler friends, for being gutless ‘anti-Zionist, post-Israeli’ wonders.

meir rotter manhandling sheikh jarrah protesters

Meir Rotter (in uniform this time) manhandling Sheikh Jarrah protesters last Friday (Oren Ziv/Activestills)

But until now, I hadn’t nailed the connection between the two identities.  A reader published a comment earlier today with a link to a Yahoo Group which displayed a message sent to Meir Rotter. If you mouseover the name, you see the e mail address resolves to ‘kafe1 at netvision.net.il’ (I’ve removed the @ sign that is in the real address in order to prevent Rotter’s e mail address from being spammed).  If you follow the link and your browser doesn’t properly resolve the Hebrew characters, mouseover the first name after the “To” and the e mail address will display for you.

The fact that Meir Rotter has chosen an e mail address ‘kafe1′ clinches his connection to Rotter member ‘Kafe.’

Among the things Rotter wrote in the forum were that settlers should spray yellow paint on the protesters and throw rocks at the individuals and their vehicles.  He called this “legitimate protest.”  He also boasted that “knives and axes” were the appropriate settler form of protest.  My Israeli source for this story also reports that last Friday Rotter “brutally assaulted” three demonstrators.  So now we know that a violent hooligan not only works for the Israeli national police beating up non-violent demonstrators, but that he publicly posts this incitement at his father’s website.

Meir Rotter acknowledged earlier today at an Israeli police online forum that he was both Rabbi Rotter’s son and an officer who worked the Sheikh Jarrah protest beat.  Though he denied that he was an administrator or moderator of Rotter.net, he pointedly did not deny that he was Kafe.  And for good reason…because he is!

Rabbi Rotter’s Son, Undercover Jerusalem Police Officer, Incites Violence Against Sheikh Jarrah Protesters

Meir Rotter, undercover police officer publicly advocates violence against Sheikh Jarrah protestors

For those not steeped in Israeli culture, there is an online forum called Rotter that plays a unique role in certain segments of Israeli society.  It’s a cross between FoxNews, Matt Drudge, DebkaFiles and NewsMax.  It is a wildly popular internet forum (Alexa ranks it 83rd in Israel) that deals in everything from celebrity gossip to political scoops and intelligence matters, all with a far-right political focus.  It’s especially known for its brand of vituperative, scabrous political debate, sorta like the Jerusalem Post talkbacks on steroids.  I’m routinely called “Terrorist” there as if it were my first name, which I wear of course as a badge of courage.

meir rotter leads west bank hike

Meir Rotter (note blue knitted skullcap) leading West Bank hike

Rotter.net was founded in 1999 by Rabbi Yeshayahu Rotter, who now runs the site with at least a few of his children helping administer and moderate it.  Meir Rotter, 37, married and the father of two, is Yeshayahu’s son and serves as a police officer in Jerusalem.  In a Wikipedia discussion, his sister Tamar confirms that her brother is a police officer.

He is a fixture at the weekly Sheikh Jarrah demonstrations where he’s been assigned for the past six months.  You can see him “in action” toward the end of this Sheikh Jarrah video in which he steals a Palestinian flag from the hands of an Israeli demonstrator.  He’s known to be a particularly nasty, odious presence wearing his enormous blue settler-style skullcap, wraparound sunglasses, and a pistol strapped to his waist (see picture).  Since he never wears a police uniform at the protests, he would appear to be a plain clothes officer.  Frankly, I can’t quite figure out why he’d be there in plain clothes dressed as a settler.  He wouldn’t be fooling anyone.

Most of this could be figured out pretty easily using public and online records.  But what is hitherto unknown is that an Israeli source tells me that Meir Rotter is not only an administrator of Rotter, but a member who posts under the name Kafe, some of the most offensive material inciting violence against the Sheikh Jarrah demonstrators.  He routinely calls them “leftist fascist, anti-Zionist, post-Israeli.”  That Meir Rotter is a police officer isn’t news.  That a Rotter administrator posts material advocating violence against lawful Israeli citizens isn’t news either.  But the fact that a police officer paid by the Jerusalem municipality ostensibly to enforce the law and keep the peace speaks of knives and axes as “legitimate means of  protest” should open a few eyes somewhere.

It certainly won’t open the eyes of Doron Zahavi, the former IDF torturer of Mustafa Dirani, who is the now the Jerusalem police “liaison” to the East Jerusalem Arab community.  Undoubtedly, Zahavi and Rotter work together, perhaps in the same unit.  Perhaps Zahavi is teaching Rotter a thing or two about torturing Arabs, just as the former’s subordinates sodomized Dirani in an Israeli prison several years ago.

There is compelling evidence to support the claim that Kafe and Rotter fils are one and the same person.  First, Kafe was one of the earliest members to sign up for the forum (on October 21, 2001) just after it was revamped in the format it presently has.  Second, for the past seven months many of his posts deal with the Sheikh Jarrah protests and police affairs related to them.  In particular, they often deal with intelligence about either the Israeli protestors or the East Jerusalem Arab community.  This is intelligence that would only be available or even interesting to either a police officer or a Shabak agent.

The image above on the right is from one of the hikes Rotter leads in the West Bank for his religious-nationalist acolytes.  Here one of the participants names Rotter and refers to pictures that he took on one of these hikes.  Another gallery on the same Picasa account displays images of Rotter himself (see right-hand image above) leading the hikes.

There is another stylistic element of Rotter’s writing that nails his identity as Kafe.  In Wikipedia, he writes (in Hebrew) under his own name:

Often the number in Shomron reaches into the hundreds! of hikers.

In Rotter, he writes as Kafe:

Every day, my dear friend receives free, at no cost! these two newspapers at the doorstep of his home.

meir rotter violent post

Meir Rotter advocates spraying Sheikh Jarrah protesters with yellow paint

I’d say it’s a pretty rare thing for two different people to place exclamation marks in the middle of sentences as Rotter has done here.  Using brackets [!] would not be unusual, but unbracketed is highly so.

I think the State might take an interest that one of its police officers is writing material like the following.  Keep in mind that these are entirely non-violent demonstrations at which the only violence comes from the side of the police:

We should bring some yellow spray paint and spray the rioting anarchists and their band of left-wing fascists who join and even lead them.  With the slogan: “Paint the traitors yellow [the color of cowardice], we’ll tar and feather ‘em for the traitors against their people and terrorists against the state that they are.

Since axes, knives and clubs are a legitimate form of protest, spray paint will be my favorite weapon.

meir rotter violent post

Meir Rotter's forum post advocating rock-throwing and damaging vehicles of Sheikh Jarrah protesters

Or that he here advocates stoning protestors and vandalizing their property.  Keep in mind that there is never any violence of any kind at the Friday Sheikh Jarrah protest except that perpetrated by the police against the protesters:

The anarchists view it as suitable to express their protests using massive stones thrown at vehicles, homes and people [in Sheikh Jarrah], why should we not wait for them at the exit of the village and take the same form of protest to them and their vehicles.  Why wouldn’t they think that legitimate?

At last Friday’s Sheikh Jarrah protest, my source reveals that Officer Rotter “brutally assaulted” three demonstrators.  It sounds like he’s a very loose cannon prone to do some serious and personal damage if not reined in.

Here (Hebrew original) our favorite officer of the law even lumps the policies of the Israeli government with those of the “anarchists” and radical Islamists:

Not all is rosy in East Jerusalem.  The policy of the Israeli government itself, along with the activism of the leftist-fascist-anarchists in the eastern part of the city, and including the unceasing attempts by the PA and/or the Islamic Movement –they all cause severe harm to the control of the State of Israel over Jerusalem.  The topic of what the Arabs really want [to destroy Israel] is never broached in  Israeli [political] discussion.

Kafe advocates an iron hand against the Palestinian community.  He suggests that protests must be isolated to the Arab villages and not be allowed to spread to the streets of the city.  His ultimate goal is that the Jewish residents of the city never even hear about the protests in their own city except in the media.  The price, if there is any, will be paid by the Arabs themselves who will harm, or so he claims, only themselves and not the city’s Jewish residents.

Rotter seems obsessed with the notion that the protests might spread outside East Jerusalem and infect Jewish neighborhoods.  That would be, in his fervid imagination, making the mistake that any government makes when faced with civil unrest and chaotic conditions.  If you engage even a moment’s doubt and fail to use every means at your disposal to violently clamp down, you will find the bastards running down your own street committing acts of hooliganism and God knows what to Jews.  Before you know it you’ll have anarchy and Arabs taking over the country.

Rotter/Kafe is contemptuous of the gutless Israeli media (Hebrew original):

Once again, the Israeli media in its true ugliness and degradation

It’s no secret that the Israeli media, by and large, is precisely like the UN, hypocrites, anti-Zionist, post-Israeli.  A megaphone and platform for the extreme leftist-anarchist agenda.  Yes, yes, they’ll deny it and say that anyone making such a claim is a fascist, someone who suppresses democratic rights and shuts people up.  They say that their role must be to expose and question and all sorts of bullshit coming from their demagogic lips.

In a survey of media coverage of Sheikh Jarrah we find not just hypocritical lies and falsification of facts, because the tendency in such coverage is toward a post-Israel, anti-Zionist, racist ideology which negates the rights of Jews to the Land of Israel

In a later portion of the same post, he brags that he persuaded a good friend to cancel the two subscriptions to Israeli daily newspapers which he had.  One was to Haaretz.  He didn’t specify the name of the other but it would either be Maariv or Yediot Achronot.  It is an indication of just how radical his political views are that he cast scorn even on these two dailies known for their right-of-center reporting.

UPDATE: Earlier today, Meir Rotter posted a reply to this post at an Israeli police officer’s online forum in which he acknowledged that he is an officer assigned to Sheikh Jarrah and that he is Rabbi Rotter’s son.  He denies that he is a moderator of the Rotter forum (because his father won’t pay him!).  But he specifically does not either mention or deny the most important claim of my source, that he is the Rotter member, Kafe.  There is a principle in the law: “silence is assent.”  It applies here.

I’m afraid my source may’ve passed this information on to me because s/he was afraid that if it was revealed in Israel alone Meir Rotter might receive a promotion, instead of being disciplined.  At least, if a foreign media source reports the matter, it may be treated as more than a curiosity.

It will surprise no one that the Jerusalem police force harbors in its midst violent radical settler thugs.  But it may surprise Israelis that such individuals will express their venom, hate and rage in such a public setting.  A question for the police superintendent to ponder: is he comfortable with his officers publicly advocating violence against peacefully, legally protesting Israeli citizens?  Is that the standard of law his personnel uphold?

Israeli Settler-Rabbi to Infertile Jewish Couples: ‘Goyish Sperm Leads to Criminality, Barbarism’

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

I swear these rabbis are such sitting ducks sometimes I feel sorry for ‘em that I have write posts like this.  But given the nuttiness they espouse, what choice does one have?

rabbi dov lior arab hater

Rabbi Dov Lior, exemplar of settler-rabbinic wisdom

One of Israeli Orthodoxy’s leading rabbinic lights, Rabbi Dov Lior, chief rabbi of that idyllic Jewish town of Hebron, told a conference at an Israeli fertility conference that Jewish couples must not use the sperm of non-Jewish men for artificial insemination because the traits of the goy will pass on to the child:

According to Lior, a baby born through such an insemination will have the “negative genetic traits that characterize non-Jews.”

Sefer HaChinuch (The Book of Education) states that the character traits of the father pass on to the son,” he said in the lecture. “If the father in not Jewish, what character traits could he have? Traits of cruelty, of barbarism! These are not traits that characterize the people of Israel.“Lior added identified Jews as merciful, shy and charitable – qualities that he claimed could be inherited. “A person born to Jewish parents, even if they weren’t raised on the Torah – there are things that are passed on (to him) in the blood, it’s genetic,” he explained. “If the father is a gentile, then the child is deprived of these things.

“I even read in books that sometimes the crime, the difficult traits, the bitterness – a child that comes from these traits, it’s no surprise that he won’t have the qualities that characterize the people of Israel,” he added.

A few years ago when I wrote about the Terry Schiavo mess one of the major points I tried to make was that religion and science and politics and science can be a toxic mixture.  It seems that Rabbi Lior has taken my advice to heart.  He’s devoted himself totally to religion and divorced himself totally from science.  Which would be OK had he not decided that he somehow became a scientific expert by dint of his alleged mastery of Jewish law.  You see, that’s where people get in trouble.  Like when Tom DeLay decided he would legislate Terry Schiavo’s medical care regimen.

Here the good rabbi retreats to 16th century genetic theory by positing that traits of temperament that are allegedly Jewish can be inherited.  I think this notion was discredited somewhere around the time of Lamarque.  But don’t tell Lior and his followers.  It might disturb their ignorance.

Lior, not to be outdone by Dr. Mengele, once said that it was permissible to conduct medical experiments on captured Arab terrorists.  You see what happens when morons arrogate to themselves a medical degree?  He’s one of those who calls Baruch Goldstein a saint and martyr.  He also joined the pulsa dinura which gave rabbinic blessing to the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.  Finally, Foreign Policy Magazine in 2008 named Lior one of the “world’s worst religious leaders.”  Right up there no doubt with Osama bin Laden (if you consider him a religious leader), Savanorola and Rasputin.

Returning to the subject of fertility, if these idiots would have an ounce of humility and allow scientists to be scientists and not interpose themselves between science and their religious adherents, the world would be a lot better off.

I also enjoyed the notion that goyim are brutes while Jews are kind.  I guess he hasn’t visited Gaza lately to see what the ‘merciful, shy and charitable’ IDF (Jewish boys almost all) is doing there.  Oh, I forgot, Jews don’t have to be merciful toward Palestinians, only toward their fellow Jews (or more likely toward their fellow Orthodox Jews as the rest of us Jews are mere apostates in their eyes).

Unfortunately, we’re not done with Lior’s ‘wisdom’:

Lior condemned artificial insemination and sperm donation in general, saying that they lead to waste of sperm, unclear genealogy and other Jewish law offenses. He warned against undergoing intrauterine insemination at hospitals, where the workers may mix sperm samples for one reason or another – a major halachic violation.

On the subject of women who freeze their eggs to use at a later date, the rabbi asserted that instead they should concentrate their efforts on getting married younger. “Our public has been influenced by a part of the Western culture in which every woman, instead of becoming a mother, needs to get a Masters Degree,” he lamented. “The role of women – child rearing – is not less important than an academic degree.” Lior noted that there is nothing wrong with attaining a profession, but it should not be a priority.

Moreover, the rabbi spoke against single women getting pregnant. “We can understand the desire of every woman to have a child, but according to our Torah it is impossible to address the demand of a certain woman when it can cause someone else [the child] suffering,” he said.

“If a child is born without a father, he cannot be 100% normal.” He stated that rabbinical literature defines these kids as “criminals and subjects of other negative phenomena.”

There was a time earlier in my life when I believed that rabbis represented, or at least should represent the most enlightened aspects of Judaism.  They should be lights unto Jews and non-Jews alike.  They should exemplify a life well led according to high ethical norms.  But after Rabbi Meir Kahane, it’s now clear that rabbis harbor some of the worst tendencies reflected in all human beings.  Many don’t even bother to temper these noxious tendencies.  In fact, they may be proud of ‘em.

I should add that Lior’s declarations fly in the face of normative Orthodox halacha which says that sperm of non-Jews is preferable to that of an unknown Jewish donor because the latter, if Ashkenazi, might cause genetic defects like Tay Sachs and other possible abnormalities.

Israel’s Orthodox Rabbis: ‘Palestinians to the Ovens!’

Israeli editorial advocating genocide against palestinians

Editorial in Orthodox 'family magazine' advocating death camps for Palestinians

Back in the days of the Shoah, one of the slogans of the Jew haters was: “Jews to the Ovens.” Now, it causes me anguish to say, we have Israeli Orthodox rabbis saying the same about the Palestinians.

Thanks to Cicero for pointing me to a shocking passage in an Israeli Orthodox “family magazine,” Fountains of Salvation, which suggests that Israel will create death camps for Palestinians in order to wipe them out like Amalek.  The article attacks Israeli rabbis who dispute the letter recently circulated from pro-settler extremist rabbis which urged that no Israeli Jew rent apartments or homes to Israeli Palestinians.  It chided them for being “politically correct” and refusing to do their jobs and educate the populace in the true path of Torah (which is presumably to hate Palestinians).

The last paragraph (page 4 of the original) though is the whopper:

It will be interesting to see whether they leave the assembly of the Amalekites [Palestinians] in extermination camps to others, or whether they will declare that wiping out Amalek is no longer [historically] relevant.  Only time will tell…

A few words of explanation.  There is a Biblical command for Jews to wipe out Amalek because of the viciousness with which that people attacked Israelites.  Essentially, this is a Jewish call to commit genocide against Amalek.  We should note that the Bible records such Jewish campaigns against other tribes as well (Moabites, Jebusites) and no doubt others did the same to their enemies.

Rabbis throughout the ages have allegorized the reference to Amalek to connote any sworn enemy of the Jewish people from Hitler to Barack Obama (yes, prominent American Orthodox Jews wrote such garbage before the last election).  But this is the first time I’ve ever read any Orthodox publication calling for committing genocide against Palestinians.

As Cicero pointed out to me, the articulation of this passage doesn’t only refer to Palestinians (though most likely this was specifically who the writer had in mind given the context).  It can refer to any enemy of the Jewish people including you or me.

Now a word on who is behind this publication: it is the cream of the crop of the radical right-wing Israeli Orthodox rabbinate.  It was founded by the former chief rabbi of Safed, whose son currently holds that position and who circulated the letter I refer to above.  Another is the chief rabbi of Ramat Gan and finally Rabbi Avinar, suspected of sexually abusing a troubled woman who approached him for spiritual advice.  Each of them holds paid government sinecures, allowing them to spew hate on the dime of the Israeli taxpayer.

This raises the important question: why does the U.S. government allow tax-deductible contributions to Israeli charities like Chabad given their propagation of such genocidal rhetoric?

Cicero first learned about the Chabad article from Udi Aloni’s Ynet column, which pointed it out.  He points out that it has been his custom in criticizing Israelis who support the Occupation to attack the liberal elite which is characterized by the slogan “shooting and crying.”  Instead, he says he now will have to pay closer attention to the radical Orthodox who “shoot and laugh.”  Aloni imagines the young Orthodox boy reading this publication in his synagogue where it’s distributed, who conjures to himself with a smile on his face the picture of Palestinians standing behind barbed wire in such a camp.  This is the legacy these rabbis are bequeathing to their young followers.

Finally, since I know people of all ideological stripes may read into this story what they wish, I want to make clear that this is not Judaism.  These wicked men may be Jews and rabbis, but they don’t represent normative Judaism any more than Osama bin Laden represents normative Islam.  Do not make the mistake of conflating this idiocy with all of Israel or all of Judaism.  Yes, these men are dangerous, they are hateful, and they must be challenged.  But there is another face of Judaism and another face of Israel (though that is becoming increasingly difficult to see I concede).
