Clinton Praises Israel’s ‘Unprecedented Concessions’

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

I don’t know what Hillary Clinton has been drinking since she arrived in Israel for a visit with Bibi Netanyahu. But whatever it is it did the trick and she’s dutifully sung the praises of Israel’s rightist government:

Speaking at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday, Clinton said Israel is putting significant limits on settlement activity.

“What the prime minister has offered in specifics on restraints on a policy of settlements … is unprecedented,” she said.

…Clinton made it clear that she wasn’t pleased with Israeli settlement construction but that it was no reason to hold up talks.

“There are always demands made in any negotiation that are not going to be fully realized,” she said.

Clinton also agreed with a statement by Netanyahu that Palestinians had never demanded a settlement freeze in the past as a condition for sitting down with Israel.

Hillary Clinton, ever since she was New York’s junior senator, was a faithful sister to whatever Israeli government was in power.  She even sang the praises of the Separation Wall and had herself pictured in front of it.  That’s one of the reason I could never support her presidential candidacy and that I worried when she became secretary of state.  Though I since have been convinced that Obama exercises enough control over administration policy and frowns on freelancing, Clinton’s performance today was disappointing.  Can the Obama administration really believe Bibi is doing anything remotely “unprecedented” when it comes to a settlement freeze?  Or is Hillary playing good cop to Obama’s bad?  One wonders though, even being a good cop, whether her praise has to be so effusive and divorced from political reality?

Not only does it appear that Clinton and perhaps the Obama administration have abandoned the attempt for a settlement freeze, it also appears Clinton has taken Bibi’s side in demanding Israel be allowed to complete 3,000 units currently under construction.  Yet another Clinton cave to Israel.

It’s rich that Israel is trying to claim that the Palestinian demand for a settlement freeze as a precondition for talks is somehow not cricket.  What does that say about Israel’s never before advanced demand that the Palestinians accept Israel’s demand to be recognized as a Jewish state?  At least the Palestinians are only asking for what every U.S. president has demanded of Israel for decades.  No U.S. president of Israeli PM has ever made the demand that Bibi has as a precondition for talks.

Clinton-Bush Love Fest at $150K a Pop

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Bill Clinton and George Bush Jr. spoke in Canada yesterday, each earning more than $150K for the gig. Frankly, I can’t imagine anyone possessing enough wisdom to be worth paying such a sum to them for dispensing it. But I guess enough people are star struck that they (or their employer) is prepared to pay a max of $2,500 a pop.

But this interchange between Clinton and Bozo Bush really put the entire proceeding in perspective.  Who needs to hear a friggin’ presidential love fest between these two:

When Mr. Clinton said one of his biggest regrets was the lack of United States action during the mass killings in Rwanda, saying “I have no defense,” Mr. Bush responded, “I think you’re being a little tough on yourself.”

This is the guy responsible for making a mess out of Hurricane Katrina, Iraq, the war on Al Qaeda (including the failure to capture Osama bin Laden), the U.S. Constitution (Abu Graibh, Guantanamo, extraordinary rendition, waterboarding, military tribunals, NSA warrantess wiretaps), the economic meltdown, among others, and he has the balls to tell Clinton not to fret about Rwanda, and that the killing of 800,000 human beings wasn’t something he should lose any sleep over??

Taking Obama’s National Security Advisor Down a Notch or Two

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Robert Dreyfuss in The Nation reports on a brewing showdown between Obama’s National Security Advisor, Gen. James Jones and the Clintonites in the State Department over the issue of how hard to press the Israelis for compromise with the Palestinians.  The journalist also opines that Jones’ activist approach to peacemaking will rile up the rightist Netanyahu government.

And true to form, Haaretz reports a leaked (and classified) U.S. diplomatic cable which seeks to do further damage to Jones’ reputation:

Several days ago, a classified telegram was received in Jerusalem discussing a meeting between Jones and a European foreign minister. Jones told his European interlocutor that President George W. Bush had avoided actions on the Palestinian question that Israel opposed, but the Obama administration intended to change this practice and become more active. It would not make concessions on matters that Israel had committed to.

“The new administration will convince Israel to compromise on the Palestinian question,” Jones said. “We will not push Israel under the wheels of a bus, but we will be more forceful toward Israel than we have been under Bush.”

Jones is quoted in the telegram as saying that the United States, European Union and moderate Arab states must redefine “a satisfactory endgame solution.”

The U.S. national security adviser did not mention Israel as party to these consultations.

What is especially interesting about this story is the phrase “classified telegram received in Jerusalem.” It’s hard to know what the reporters mean by a “classified telegram.” I wonder whether they’re speaking about a diplomatic cable. If so, then they’re just revealed that either Israeli intelligence obtained a classified U.S. diplomatic document; or that one of Jones’ enemies in the Obama administration leaked the document to the Israelis. And actually both explanations could be true if the document was leaked by someone in our government to an Israeli enabler (i.e. spook or diplomat–or both) who then transferred it to Jerusalem.

UPDATE: A friend wise in the ways of Israel and Washington suggested another credible possibility: that the Israelis gained access to the material via the government of the “European foreign minister.”  You may keep this alternative in mind as you read below.

At any rate, the Israelis (and no doubt a newly reenergized Aipac coming off its “vindication” via the dismissal of the Rosen-Weissman Aipac Two case), seem to be colluding to besmirch Gen. Jones as an enemy of the state of Israel. The goal seems to be to raise consciousness among Israel’s “friends” in Washington to the potential “damage” the general could do to Israel if he pushes too hard for things the Netanyahu government wishes not to do.

But let’s ask a basic question: what is wrong with anything Jones said?  Nothing.  Is there any anti-Israel sentiment expressed?  No.  Is there a perspective that calls for a break from business as usual and warns the Israelis they no longer will have a free ride?  Yes.  But will that kill Israel to face a more challenging ally in the Obama administration, one that doesn’t just rubber stamp bilateral policies devised in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem?  No.

Regarding the sourcing of this story, in closely reading the Israeli press, I’ve always thought they were entirely too cozy with their sources (which are often the military-intelligence-political elite).  Unlike in good U.S. journalism, Israeli reporters seem aligned with their high level sources and not with the interests of their reader or even the story.  The source seems the holy grail because he is the meal ticket for future leaks.  There is much less of a sense of journalistic rigor or objectivity.  Sources are routinely unnamed.  This in turn almost guarantees that reporters are sometimes little more than scribes who dutifully publish whatever information the leaker wants in the public domain.  The journalist does almost no due diligence, doesn’t think it necessary to put the leak in context or question the motives of the leaker.  It can make for shallow journalism.

UPDATE I: Natasha Mozgovaya informs me that her Israel-based colleague, Barak Ravid, obtained the document in Jerusalem, which caused me to re-edit the original version of what follows.

It seems to me that the reporters who wrote this story run the danger of becoming the Judy Miller of the Israeli press corps. The problem as I note above is that the reporters display no willingness to explore why they are being used by Israeli intelligence or other insiders to advance a particularly noxious anti-peace political agenda.

It’s Madame Secretary for Hillary, But Which Hillary Will It Be?

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

The N.Y. Times reports that Hillary Clinton has accepted Barack Obama’s invitation to be his secretary of state. This development will no doubt rankle some on the left who campaigned hard for Obama’s election.  I’m concerned too.  I wonder which Hillary will be secretary of state: the bellicose, saber-rattling presidential primary candidate who threatened to wipe out Iran; or the pragmatic, flexible Hillary we’d prefer to see fill that position.

The Times notes my special concern regarding her views on the Israeli-Arab conflict:

On Israel, the other chronic foreign policy issue that will bedevil the next secretary of state, Mrs. Clinton would bring baggage as well. She is seen as fiercely loyal to Israel, which can be both a plus and a minus, Middle East experts say.

While her pro-Israel record as a senator from New York might cause her to be viewed with suspicion in the Arab world, it could give her credibility to ask Israel to make tough choices for peace.

The argument is the same as the one made in favor of Rahm Emanuel’s appointment. Because of his pro-Israel bona fides when he called upon an Israeli prime minister or defense minister to stop settlements Israeli pols couldn’t dismiss him as a Johnny-come-lately naive American pol. He would be a force to be reckoned with.

So which Hillary will we get?  The one who never met a Separation Wall she didn’t like?  The one beloved of Aipac?  Or the one who can jawbone with the best of ‘em, including top IDF brass?  I believe she could be a very good secretary of state if she can distance herself from her campaign jingoism.  But the jury is definitely out on this one.

15,000 Jews Say ‘No’ to Palin at UN Rally on Iran

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

J Street has just won its first political skirmish.  Only a day or so ago it began a campaign to petition Malcolm Hoenlein and the Conference of Presidents against its decision to invite Sarah Palin to address a UN rally against Iran on the day the latter’s president addresses the world body.

Hillary Clinton, who had been scheduled to speak at the rally, dropped out when Hoenlein announced Palin’s participation.  J Street then went on the attack against Hoenlein’s turning it into a partisan pep rally.  While he must’ve been madder than a hornet’s nest, 15,000 protest messages did the trick and Palin was disinvited.  Chalk one up for J Street and the good guys.

The Forward also reveals that some of the event’s local Jewish sponsors were specifically angry at Hoenlein for his efforts to turn the event into a partisan show:

Sources close to the issue said…that the flap had caused heated discussions among the rally organizers, with the New York-based groups expressing dismay about the decision to invite Palin.

Several left-leaning members of the Presidents Conference, which comprises 52 Jewish organizations, also criticized the decision to reach out to the Republican Party, which they claimed was made by Hoenlein…

John McCain too is mad as hell:

“Gov. Palin was pleased to accept an invitation to address this rally and show her resolve on this grave national security issue, regrettably that invitation has since been withdrawn under pressure from Democratic partisans,” McCain said in a statement.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with Republicans, Democrats and independents alike to oppose Ahmadinejad’s goal of a nuclear armed Iran,” he said. “Sen. Obama’s campaign had the opportunity to join us. Sen. Obama chose politics rather than the national interest.”

I would’ve understood asking Hillary Clinton to address this crowd since she IS New York’s senior senator, she is no longer running for any office, and she has a historically close relationship with the Jewish community.  But Hoenlein should’ve realized he was playing with fire when he invited Palin.  How could he expect Clinton and Palin to speak from the same podium?  It was simply a numbskull idea considering the awkwardness–though of course it would’ve burnished Palin’s foreign policy street cred no end (which is why Clinton wanted nothing to do with it).

Malcolm will have to go back to the drawing board and figure out other ways he can help John McCain and Sarah Palin get more Jewish votes.  So much for a supposedly non-partisan Jewish communal leadership.

Hoenlein and Palin: Match Made in Iran

Conference of Presidents Shreis Gevalt!

Conference of Presidents Shreis Gevalt!

The Conference of Presidents leader, Malcolm Hoenlein got a little more than he bargained for when, after securing Hillary Clinton for his anti-Iran rally, timed to coincide with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech to the UN General Assembly, he also invited Sarah Palin. He began the day with New York’s senior senator as a star of his event. He ended the day Clintonless:

“Her attendance was news to us, and this was never billed to us as a partisan political event,” a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton, Philippe Reines, said on Wednesday. “Senator Clinton will therefore not be attending.”

Clinton’s “replacement” opposes almost every domestic priority of the American Jewish community. Hoenlein went from a rally that had no partisan political tension, to one that showcased Hoenlein’s allegiance to the Republican Party.

[Irony Alert] I do understand there may be one small glitch in Palin’s acceptance of the invitation to speak.  She’s requested that she be introduced by David Brickner, the director of Jews for Jesus, who spoke before her at her Alaska church less than a month ago.  I don’t think this will cause Abe Foxman any trouble though, since he claims he has no problem with Palin lapping up a Jews for Jesus exhortation to convert us.

And since Hoenlein came to the U.S. as a young Soviet Jewish émigré (which explains a good deal of his political hawkishness), he should be able to give Sarah a quick tutorial on Russia to fill in any weak spots in her knowledge.

This rally debacle also illustrates how politically out of touch the Israel lobby’s leadership is with the views of mainstream Jews. At best, 30% of them will vote for McCain-Palin in November. 70% will vote for the other guy. But Hoenlein is content to showcase his fealty to the 30% at an event that should showcase a united Jewish community.

Let there be no doubt, the Jewish leadership has hitched itself to the Bush-McCain bandwagon.  It is in lockstep with the most bellicose approach to the Iranian nuclear impasse.  Sarah Palin says there would be nothing wrong with Israel attacking Iran.  That’s what Malcolm Hoenlein wants to hear.  He wants to say: “Jump” and hear a candidate say: “How high.”  The Republicans are willing to give Israel a blank check.  The Israel lobby knows that Barack Obama, while a friend to Israel and the Jewish people, is no fool and will not give Israel a blank check.

Keep in mind that yesterday, five past secretaries of state INCLUDING Henry Kissinger and James Baker called for unconditional negotiations between Iran and the U.S. “at the highest level.”  That’s the two deans of the Republican foreign policy establishment rejecting the McCain-Palin approach to Iran out of hand.  Yet, Malcolm Hoenlein knows something Kissinger doesn’t about those mad mullahs.

The Conference of President’s anti-Iran event has become a pep rally for “Jews for McCain-Palin.”  It’s a shande.  If you want to voice your displeasure, join J Street’s protest by demanding that Hoenlein and the Conference disinvite Palin.

One thing does reassure me though.  After the rally, Sarah will get some quality time with all those foreign leaders gathering at the UN, who she’s never met before in her life.  She’ll even get an autographed map of the Bering Straits from Ban Ki Moon showing the border between Russia and Alaska.  If she’s very good, Secretary General Ban might shake her hand and tell her he comes from South Korea and show her it on a world map.

Then Sarah can tell him that the only map that matters for her is the map of heaven.  All the rest is sin and deviltry.

Clinton Wins Squeaker in Indiana, It’s All Over But the Crying

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

As I write this at 12:50AM east coast time, 95% of Indiana is in and Obama is losing by around 16,000 votes (just over 1% margin). The remaining votes are coming from the region around Gary, IN. which heavily favors Obama. So it’s likely the final margin of victory will be even closer–perhaps as low as 5,000 votes.

By my calculations the primary campaign is over. Hillary has cancelled media appearances tomorrow and will be consulting with her staff, supporters and superdelegates, who I’m guessing will be giving her the bad news. She may fight on. But she’s essentially broke and will have to go even deeper into hock to continue.

No, I’m not gloating and not singing any songs about wicked witches as I’ve read at other websites. We need Hillary’s supporters to win this thing. Obama struck just the right note of conciliation in his North Carolina speech. I hope that despite her disappointment with tonight’s results, Hillary will be able to read the tea leaves and decide that when she gets out she does so with style and magnanimity. It’s hard to know with her. She fights so hard and probably takes losing badly. But for the sake of the Party and defeating McCain, I hope she can find it in her heart to move on and give her all in supporting Obama’s likely candidacy.

If she is surly and unforgiving and provides tepid support it just may be too hard to win in November. It’s going to be a tough, close race no matter what happens. Despite the fact that the Republicans have almost nothing going for them this election cycle, McCain is going to be a formidable candidate. He has some virtues Obama doesn’t and he’ll play them to the hilt.

UPDATE: 99% of the vote is counted and Hillary wins by approximately 22,000 votes and a margin of less than 2%.

Clinton to Iran: ‘We Will Obliterate You’

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

hillary clinton iran in crosshairs
Hillary Clinton must think she’s auditioning for the role of Curtis LeMay in a Hollywood film. That’s the only reason (other than a looming PA. primary in which she’s desperate to sound tough as nails) I can figure she’s sounding more like a Gen. Buck Turgidsen in Dr. Stangelove than a presidential candidate. ABC News reports that on this morning’s Good Morning America she will threaten to obliterate Iran if they attack Israel:

…In an interview airing on “Good Morning America” Tuesday. ABC News’ Chris Cuomo asked Clinton what she would do if Iran attacked Israel with nuclear weapons.

“I want the Iranians to know that if I’m the president, we will attack Iran,” Clinton said. “In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them.”

Is this truly how Hillary thinks she’s going to salvage her primary campaign and eke out a win over Obama?? This is precisely the Hillary that so many Democrats have been turned off by–the candidate who thinks she has to out-gun and out-man every other candidate to show she’s tough on defense. The Party doesn’t need another Henry Jackson, Hillary. We need a candidate more like your husband was in 1992–more like…Barack Obama. A candidate appealing to the “better angels of our nature” rather than the warrior within us.
