Pam Geller Named to Southern Poverty Law Center Hate Hall of Fame

Pam Geller huffs and puffs on FoxNews

The Southern Poverty Law Center comes a bit late to the game in understanding the power and danger of anti-Muslim hate.  But they’ve made great strides by naming Pam Geller’s Stop the Islamization of America as an official hate group, alongside such wonderful representatives of the species as the Westboro Baptist Church, the Aryan Nation, KKK, and the Nation of Islam.  It’s about time Pam was recognized for her important contribution to the genre of hate.

She responded by publishing Morris Dees divorce papers, as if that was supposed to somehow defame SPLC.  Such lunacy on her part is rich when you consider that she and her husband operated a car dealership with alleged ties to the mob and an especially gruesome murder.  She also exhibited her typical histrionic bellowing observed whenever her ox is gored:

“It’s outrageous that the SPLC designates a group dedicated to protecting the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and legal equality for all Americans as a ‘hate group,’” she said. “The SPLC, instead of standing for those freedoms, is carrying water for the real haters, the real neo-Nazi Jew-haters: the forces of Islamic supremacism and jihad. The SPLC doesn’t even have a category for Islamic jihadi groups. The greatest threat facing our nation, our people, our world, and they are shilling for them.”

…The SPLC is just a cash cow for the clueless and/or complicit tools of Islamic supremacism on the Left. The SPLC is reviled in civil rights circles for its notorious reputation. It does little to no work, while its officials enriching themselves by raising huge amounts from unsuspecting donors.”

I hate to spoil the party Pammy, but precisely which “civil rights circles” revile SPLC for its “notorious reputation?”  She of course means her own organization which she (seriously, now) views as a “civil rights” organization.  Why sure, she’s for the civil rights of everyone who isn’t Muslim.  I wonder if she’s opposed to allowing Muslims to be American citizens.  You see it creates a rather inconvenient problem because once they’re citizens they’re entitled to the rights we white people (and even Black people, heaven forfend) enjoy.

Her talk about SPLC being a cash cow for its officials is also rich when you consider the tony digs Pammy enjoys on New York’s Upper Eastside in her multi-million dollar condo, thanks to the support of her “clueless complicit tools of anti-Muslim hate on the right” whose largess offers her the lifestyle to which she’s become accustomed and entitled.  Not to mention her husband–who conveniently passed away just as she began her anti-Muslim jihad–willing her the gains, gotten and ill, of their Long Island car dealership.

I’m also delighted to see the Jewish Task Force on the list, which is a JDL-spinoff run by Chaim Ben Pesach, aka Victor Vancier.  The latter served time in federal prison for engaging in acts of terror while he was in the JDL.  Many believe that Vancier is the owner of the Masada2000 hate site.

SPLC, by rights, should add other American Jewish extremist settler support groups like Hebron Fund and Central Fund of Israel to its list since they echo Geller’s anti-Muslim ideology.  Several years ago, I called and spoke to Mark Potok about this, but I don’t think he felt the urgency that I did.

David Yerushalmi, Islam-Hating White Supremacist Inspires Anti-Sharia Bills Sweeping Tea Party Nation

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

david yerushalmi

David Yerushalmi

You’ve gotta hand it to David Yerushalmi.  Until now, I can’t recall a Jew who’s ever been called a white supremacist before (actually now that I think of it, I called him a Jewish white supremacist way back in 2007).  Thanks to him, we now can.  They said that one of the virtues of Zionism was that now Israel could have Jewish criminals.  I guess the same holds true for Jewish racists.  Thanks to Dovid Yerushalmi Jews are really breaking new ground.

I’m referring to an eye-opening expose in Mother Jones about the inspiration the Jewish extremist is offering for the anti-Muslim legal initiatives that are sweeping the south after the victory of one such campaign in Oklahoma a few months ago.  Now Tennessee stands ready to draw the line at Muslim infidels thrusting their scimitars into the private parts of Christian maidens.  The legislature there is considering a bill which would ban the use of foreign legal systems like Sharia in the adjudication of any legal matters within the state.  So far, I haven’t seen any Tennesseans clamoring to apply Sharia to the laws governing horse-racing at Churchill Downs.  But that doesn’t deter Yerushalmi, who has projects like this cooking in several other southern Tea Party strongholds.

One of the most delicious phrases used to describe the Jewish anti-jihadi is “white supremacist,” to which I say: if the shoe fits…I’ve also called him a Jewish fascist.  But white supremacist will do just as well.

As Murphy notes, this is a guy who endorses the principle that “Caucasians” are superior to blacks and that Jewish liberals are a cancer in the U.S. body politic.  The nearest Jewish “intellectual” antecedent I can determine would be Meir Kahane.  But Yerushalmi’s views are far more radical than Kahane’s.  The only difference is that Kahane embraced violence as a tool in his campaign against Arabs and anti-Semites.  The latter-day Jewish Islamophobe, an attorney, is far too slick for that.  He merely suggests that all non-citizen Muslims in the country be deported and many of the rest thrown in concentration camps.  In Yerushalmi-world, any Muslim who espoused Sharia would earn him or herself a 20 year stay in the federal pen.  Why would you need violence when you can throw the entire weight of the federal government into criminalizing merely being a Muslim?

I wouldn’t at all be surprised if Yerushalmi, a fedora-totin’, tzitis-wearing ultra-Orthodox Jew, was an avid supporter of the settler movement, the Israeli equivalent of the Tea Party with Uzis.

David Yerushalmi is the nasty, sleazy side of the more refined Muslim-bashing proposed by Rep. Peter King, who plans on quizzing Muslim-Americans about their nasty un-American habits in Congressional hearings soon.  The former is Roy Cohn, to King’s Joe McCarthy.  Can you imagine white Christian Congress members summoning American Jews to defend their Americanism in public hearings?  It’s preposterous, nauseating.

And just think, if Mike Huckabee gets the Republican nomination, we’ll have a settler-loving presidential candidate espousing such a foul, racist agenda.

Koch-Related Fund Gave $18-Million to Distribute Clarion Fund’s ‘Obsession’ During Presidential Campaign

Donors Trust Fund: 'building a legacy of liberty' by spitting on America's Muslims and meddling in a presidential election campaign

Counterpunch has published an exposé about the Clarion Fund that takes the story to the next level.  This is a development I’ve been awaiting for two years.  We knew that Clarion was the ostensible producer of the three anti-Muslim films, Third Jihad, Obsession and the latest, Iranium (watch the unintentionally hilarious trailer).  But we didn’t know who specifically financed the films.  Now, we still don’t know specifically whom, but Pam Gartens has taken us right up to his doorstep and rung the doorbell.

iranium movie

Iranium: the movie

Turns out that in 2008, when Clarion sent 20 million copies of Obsession to households in swing states a few weeks before the presidential election, they didn’t do this alone.  Gartens estimates that the DVD reproduction and advertising costs amounted to somewhere in the neighborhood of $17-million.  This money came to Clarion via the Donors Capital Fund, a non-profit libertarian front group (“providing asset management for…capital dedicated to the pursuit of liberty”) closely associated with the interests of the Koch family:

There are shades of Charles Koch all over Donors Capital and Donors Trust.  Two grantees receiving repeat and sizeable grants from Donors Capital are favorites of the Koch foundations: George Mason University Foundation and Institute for Humane Studies.  Another tie is Claire Kittle.  A project of Donor’s Trust is Talent Market.org, a headhunter for staffing nonprofits with the “right” people.  Ms. Kittle serves as Talent Market’s Executive Director and was the former Program Officer for Leadership and Talent Development at the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation.  Then there is Whitney Ball, President of both Donors Capital Fund and Donors Trust.  Ms. Ball was one of the elite guests at the invitation-only secret Aspen bash thrown by Charles Koch in June of this year, as reported by ThinkProgress.org.  Also on the guest list for the Koch bash was Stephen Moore, a member of the Editorial Board at the Wall Street Journal.  Mr. Moore is a Director at Donors Capital Fund.  Rounding out the ties that bind is Lauren Vander Heyden, who serves as Client Services Coordinator at Donors Trust.  Ms. Vander Heyden previously worked as grants coordinator and policy analyst at the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation.

Its 990 form reveals (page 33) that it gave an $18-million grant to Clarion Fund in 2008.  It was by far the largest grant distributed that year, amounting to about 25% of the total grants.

There are several aspects of this that shock me.  I always figured Shelly Adelson or Irwin Katsof, billionaires much more closely associated both with pro-Israel and anti-jihadi political forces, to be the suspect donors.  This latest news takes things in a far more radical libertarian direction, and generally Jews have stayed clear of right-wing libertarianism because it’s always had a whiff of anti-Semitism about it (cf. Rand Paul).  While the Koch family is Jewish, their philanthropy has never been visible in that community nor has their interest in far-right Israeli politics been evident.

I can tell you one person who ain’t the donor: George Soros.  But I wonder if Eli Lake will be as dogged in pursuing the identity of Clarion’s sugar-baby as he was in pursuing J Street’s?

Though Garten has done a great service in tracing this as far as she has, the problem is that DonorsTrust (minimum gift: $1-million) has created yet another veil behind which another donor is concealed.  We thought all we had to do before was figure out which individual funded the Clarion films.  We didn’t realize that there could be further subterfuge.  And, in fact the Trust trumpets as one of its primary benefits that it shields it’s participants identity behind a shroud:

Privacy is very important to me and at times it’s been hard to do my charitable giving in a way that’s discreet.

My private foundation was beneficial for tax benefits and administration but completely failed when it came to privacy since all private foundation tax forms are available to the general public on the Internet. That’s why I set up a DonorsTrust donor-advised account. My contributions to DonorsTrust are not public information and the grants I recommend from DonorsTrust can remain completely anonymous.

It makes you wonder why such a donor would feel the need for secrecy (or “privacy,” as they call it)?  I’m just an old-fashioned former non-profit fundraiser who believes in transparency and standing behind your philanthropic commitments.  I find secrecy in philanthropy to be objectionable.  It just makes you wonder what they’re hiding and why.

In the case of the Clarion gift, this is even more evident and problematic since a grant from a non-profit charitable foundation was used in an overtly political manner to influence a presidential election.  Given the Koch family’s massive presence in the current election cycle, the fact that DonorsTrust used non-profits it funded to produce films assaulting Islam and endorsing a presidential candidate (one of the Clarion websites promoting Obsession rated McCain far better on security issues than Obama) stinks to high heaven.

CAIR has already demanded that the IRS investigate Clarion for these reasons.  Now it seems it should expand the demand to include DonorsTrust as well.

I have to say Garten’s speculation concerning David Horowitz as a donor suspect seems far-fetched.  He doesn’t have that kind of dough and I doubt he has access to it from well-heeled allies either.

I have been surprised by the fact that Clarion hasn’t used Iranium in the same way this election cycle that it did Obsession in 2008.  I expected another DVD blitz in voters’ mailboxes right about now.  So far it hasn’t materialized.  Could it be that their Obsession donor didn’t spring for another $18-million PR blitz?

Geller’s Wealth from Corruption, Fraud; Dealership She Co-Owned Supplied Cop-Killer Getaway Car

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
pam geller frisked by police

Geller frisked by Kennedy Airport security

Pam Geller’s N.Y. Times profile reveals her enormous wealth including a $4-million divorce settlement, a $5-million life insurance on the death of her ex-husband, Michael Oshry (her married name was Pamela G. Oshry), and a portion of the $2-million sale of the Hewlett Harbor home she jointly owned with Oshry.  All of which allows her to live in luxury on an entire floor of upper Eastside condo.

What isn’t as well-known, and was whitewashed from her Times profile, is that the basis of her wealth is a criminal enterprise.  Michael Oshry, her ex-husband who died of an alleged heart attack in 2008, owned a large Long Island car dealership which operated a scam allowing buyers to purchase cars using fraudulent identities.  Such a scam is perfect for organized crime and others seeking to use cars in the commission of felonies.  In fact, one such vehicle was used by a former car salesman to murder two New York City police officers.  An employee who discovered the scam was murdered execution-style.

Geller was listed as a co-owner of the dealership though she denied any knowledge of the fraud.  However, the head of the local D.A.’s economic crimes unit is quoted as saying that the owners of the dealership knew about, and possibly actively organized the fraud, which implies that either Geller had to know about it or willfully kept herself in the dark:

Peress said the corruption at Universal “went all the way to the top.”

So Pam’s denials ring hollow.  If the origins of her wealth are based on a criminal enterprise is it any wonder that her political views are equally corrupt?

I note the Times profile reveals that Geller’s personal attorney is David Yerushalmi, who incorporated the non-profit entity under which she and Robert Spencer produce their blogs.  This in turn allows David Horowitz to plow funds into their enterprise that have been given on a tax-deductible basis.  Yerushalmi is also representing her in a $10 million defamation lawsuit brought by the family of Rifqa Bary, a teenage girl torn from her Muslim-American family by Christian evangelicals who inveigled her into converting to Christianity and running away from their home while still a minor.

Yerushalmi appears to be grasping Geller and Spencer’s coattails to become the “go to” lawyer for the radical anti-jihadi movement in this country.  He’s the legal counsel for Frank Gaffney’s anti-Muslim Center for Security Policy and served in the same role for Stop the Madrassa, the group which got Debbie Almontaser fired as principal of the Khalil Gibran Academy.

Pam Geller is the National Inquirer of the far-right blogworld.  A perfect example of this is her claim that Barack Obama is the love child of Malcolm X.

If Pam is the National Inquirer of the anti-jihad movement, then David Yerushalmi is it’s Roy Cohn.

What’s interesting about Geller’s Rifqa Bary crusade is that, being a Jewish am ha’aretz who knows next to nothing about Jewish history (her sister is quoted as saying to the Times her family practiced “fashion show” Judaism), she is no doubt unaware of such major 19th century controversies as the forced conversion of the Jewish child, Edgardo Mortara, to Roman Catholicism.  This case riveted Jews and non-Jews of the world and pointed out to Jews how powerless they were against the forces of the Church arrayed against them.  The child was raised Catholic, became a priest, and served as a stain on Jewish-Catholic relations for generations.

Similarly, the Bary case has generated enormous anger on the part of American Muslim toward fundamentalist Christianity.  Geller, out of her deep-seated animus toward Islam, has made common cause with those Christian evangelicals which both converted Bary and persuaded her to become a runaway.

geller supports english defence league

Geller: 'How I wish I could be there to stand with the English Defence League.'

Similarly, and again out of her hatred of Islam, she has made common cause with some of Europe’s scummiest neo-Nazi groups simply because the enemy of her enemy is her friend.  No matter that some of her allies have been photographed giving Nazi salutes (and you can imagine their views about Jews).

This is simply a case of someone who is clearly a deeply troubled person and somewhat of a sociopath in the sense that she has no clear sense of truth or even objective reality.  She is such a narcissist that she has no notion that she could ever be wrong about anything.  Though it seems hard to believe, I don’t think she has the capacity to understand that she lies.  It’s as if any statement in furtherance of her interests is justified, whether true or not.  Further, anyone who is against her is not just wrong, but becomes a mortal enemy in a life and death struggle between good and evil.  She, of course, represents good and the rest of the world, evil.

In Geller’s lawsuit, Yerushalmi and Geller are using precisely the same arguments I am using in a similar defamation suit brought by Rachel Neuwirth:

…Blogger Pamela Geller also says many of the postings singled out in a federal lawsuit could fall into the realm of hyperbole and not defamation.

Geller says in a federal court filing Tuesday that she is a journalist writing about a matter of public interest and is protected by the First Amendment.

The difference in the cases is that Geller, as is her wont, published objectively false claims about Bary’s parents.  One wonders whether they’re able to come up with reason why their case is worthy of this defense while the case of someone they conceive as an enemy of the Jewish people isn’t.

Chernick Funds Horowitz-Spencer Attacks on Park51 Mosque

Aubrey Chernick, with his wife, funder of Robert Spencer's Jihad Watch and campaign against Park51 mosque

Pajama Media’s alum Pam Geller struck gold when she discovered a Sufi group intended to building a mosque and Muslim community center two blocks from Ground Zero.  Now, her cause has been embraced by more powerful rightist pro-Israel forces, Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch and his patron, David Horowitz.  Even more importantly, Politico has revealed that the source of all of the financial support for Jihad Watch over the past three years comes from L.A. technology magnate, Aubrey Chernick and his wife, Joyce.  Aubrey funded Pajamas Media with a few-million of the $750-million he earned from sale of his software company to IBM in 2004.

Aubrey Chernik's home

Aubrey Chernick's 'modest' L.A. home

Several years ago, when I wrote intensively about Chernick and Pajamas Media there was very little money trail from Chernick’s Israel philanthropy.  I noted he was the honoree at a Stand With Us dinner, which made clear his ideological proclivities.  I also noted he was a trustee of the pro-Israel think-tank, WINEP (originally affiliated with Aipac).  But I didn’t feel I had the full picture.  Chernick’s $900,000 gift to Horowitz, used to support Spencer and Jihad Watch, now fleshes out the picture of the Chernicks’ far-right political views.

Laura Rozen has discovered that Chernick’s charity-giving is done through the Fairbrook Foundation ($66-million in assets).  According to its 2008 IRS 990 report, among the far-right pro-Israel groups he’s funding are Ateret Cohanim ($30,000), involved in the Judaization of East Jerusalem through “appropriation” of Arab homes; Muslim-basher Bridgette Gabriel’s American Congress for Truth ($50,000); Aish HaTorah, funders of the anti-Muslim films Obsessed and Third Jihad ($14,000); the anti-Palestinian media advocacy group MEMRI ($100,000); American Freedom Alliance, another Muslim-bashing group, founded by Avi Davis, which defends western civilization from the unwashed hordes ($120,000); Gary Bauer’s American Values ($80,000); Horowitz’s Center for the Study of Popular Culture ($160,000); the anti-Arab media advocacy group CAMERA ($25,000); the Council for Democracy and Tolerance, an Arab-bashing group established by a Pakistani neocon ($160,000); Defend the West, yet another Muslim-turncoat group founded by Ibn Warraq ($130,000); Hudson Institute ($50,000); Heritage Foundation ($50,000); the Jewish neo-con security think tank JINSA ($15,000); the anti-Arab media advocacy group Second Draft ($40,000); Stand With Us ($20,000); and Daniel Pipes’ Middle East Forum ($180,000).  In 2005, Chernick gave $60,000 to the Central Fund of Israel, one of the largest pro-settler ‘philanthropic’ advocacy groups.

Since Aubrey Chernick sold his business, he has bought into a new one, National Center for Crisis and Continuity Coordination (NC4), which consults for businesses, law enforcement and government on emergency preparedness, risk management, and homeland security-related matters.  Is it any accident that Chernick’s philanthropy supports Muslim-bashing and provokes fear in the minds of New Yorkers and Americans that Muslims will harm American security and sully the memories of the 9/11 victims?  This is a nice example of someone’s political ideology, business interests and philanthropy all catalyzing each other.

Rozen also reveals that Joyce Chernick sat on the board of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies.  I hate to say it but in the Chernicks, we have yet another prospect for the mystery funder of the $20-million promotion of the anti-Muslim film, Obsession, during the last presidential campaign.  Not to mention a prospect for funding the entire roster of three films produced by the Aish HaTorah offshoot, the Clarion Fund.

Horowitz, Spencer, et al. are angry that Politico is examining their financial support feeling the media should be focussing attention on the true evil, the Sufis intending to taint the hallowed ground of Ground Zero.  Horowitz, never known for humility or adherence to commonly accepted notions of truth or reality, made this wonderfully ironic statement about his own remuneration:

The Freedom Center had a budget of $4.5 million last year, according to its tax filings…Horowitz has received an average of $461,000 a year in salary and benefits over the past three years, while Spencer has pulled in an average of $140,000, according to the center’s IRS filings.

But, Horowitz said, “Robert Spencer, David Horowitz, Pam Geller — we don’t do this for the money — we do this because we believe in it.”

Let’s face it: the Park51 mosque project is a gravy train for the Islam-bashing three.  They will parlay their efforts into huge personal financial rewards from wealthy ideologues like the Chernicks, and other Republican-leaning groups who have already piled on to the effort to uproot the project from its intended lower Manhattan location.

Let’s not make the mistakes that were made in the Debbie Almontaser-Khalil Gibran Academy scandal, when New York political leaders caved to loony Jewish right-wingers like Daniel Pipes and David Yerushalmi, attempting to paint her as a jihadist.  This time, let’s realize there are powerful right-wing pro-Israel financial and political interests seeking to torpedo the mosque project.  The memory of 9/11 victims is an excuse, a convenient stepping-stone toward their real interests which are bashing Muslims for political gain.

Mark ‘Muntasir’ Halawa, Pimping the Pro-Israel Lecture Circuit

Thursday, April 29th, 2010
mark halawa

Mark 'Muntasir' Halawa rediscovering his 'Jewish roots' at the Aish HaTorah yeshiva in Jerusalem

A few months ago I wrote an expose of a “Mark” Halawa, who’d been adopted by the far-right settler group, Aish Hatorah, as their pet Muslim Jew (more about this later).  I called him “Aish’s Manchurian Muslim.”  The profile about him contained elements so far fetched as to be almost laughable, especially that he’d grown up as a Muslim but discovered his grandmother was really Jewish, which led to him “returning” to his supposed Jewish faith.

After I wrote this post, I heard from several individuals who’d had various unpalatable interactions with him in previous incarnations of his life.  The main one was Walid, who’d met “Muntasir”  as he was then known, at the University of Western Ontario when both were students there.  Walid’s accounting was so sensational I didn’t fully trust it till I spoke to him by phone.  Here is some of it:

He is the scum of the scum. A man with no morals or eithics, willing to sell his soul to the devil…The guy is confused, [a] drug addict…He claims that his grandma is Jewish. The guy is a fraud and it’s not hard to figure this out after sitting with him for a few minutes.

He was kicked out from UWO for plagiarism. I remember him wanting to make money or get famous at any expense. He finally met a Jewish lady that he managed to sell his story to.

Another source who knows him and knows others even more familiar with him, says his drug of choice is (or was, not sure he’s still dabbling) cocaine.  She added that he is a “con artist.”

Back during college, Muntasir told Walid of a scheme to recruit a woman to do a porno movie.  The latter wasn’t sure whether Halawa was going to star in it or only produce it.  My source above confirms that he retains a fascination with making the entertainment industry, though his subject matter has become considerably less ribald.  Nowadays, he wants to make a TV show (reality?) to prove that Israelis and Palestinians can live together–the Aish way, natch.  He’s always on the look-out for wealthy Jews who can fund his ventures and, I presume, his lifestyle.

Walid actually felt sorry for Halawa because he’d come to Canada on his own without any family and was having a hard time of it.  Besides, by the latter’s account his own family was extremely dysfunctional.  A poor lost, troubled soul like this is a perfect mark for cults like Aish HaTorah.  Not to mention that Aish gets a tremendous propaganda asset in recruiting him.  They can send him around the pro-Israel lecture circuit to rally the troops and gain new recruits for the cause.

I actually didn’t anticipate writing further about Halawa, but another reader has pointed out to me that he’s been making multiple appearances on college campuses at pro-Israel events (here is one at York University hosted by the pro-Israel media advocacy group CAMERA during Israel Awareness Week).  So I want to make the information I have available so that anyone considering booking him will know that this man is a deeply troubled individual harboring confused motives for his behavior.  Clearly, he is exploiting the gullibility of his patrons who themselves are only too happy to exploit him in return.

Interesting that he’s allowing his hosts to market him as “Palestinian,” when by his own admission he was raised in Kuwait (Twitter handle: YidfromQ8) and never stepped foot in Palestine.  Unless of course his latest fictionalized biography has a new chapter about this part of his life.

I find this Facebook contribution by him in a thread about the creation of a “Palestinian Zionist Organization,” in which he discusses other anti-Jihadi Muslims labelling them money-grubbing frauds, quite telling in an unintended way:

Many of these lowlifes sprout everyday callign [sic] themselves ex-jihadis, or ex-terrorists, and suddenly they’re seen as experts on the conflict.

At York University in Toronto, just recently, a new person called Kamal Salim charged 3,000 dollars to speak for an hour and 45 mins about how horrible Islam is, causing him to be a terrorist. But, no one questions that he’s a 28 year old who grow up in suburban America.

Irshad Manji spoke at University of Western Ontario, a few years back. I was told she made many North American women sob to her stories of how being forced to wear Hijab ruined her hair!!!…. While no one would stop for a second to remember that Manji – a Lesbian, and an anchor on Queer TV – grew up in British Columbia to an Ismaili family that doesn’t believe in Hijab to start with…

By the same token and for triple the pay; anti-Zionist (anti-Jewish groups) could get one of these cronies to swear on his/her life seeing Zionist soldiers bbq’ing children [sic] body parts for breakfast!

If you recall Walid’s account above of Halawa’s obsession with becoming rich or famous, his preoccupation with lecture fees and his status on the pro-Israel circuit fits quite nicely.  The old saying is “there’s a sucker born every minute.”  I urge the Jewish community not to be taken in.  Consider yourselves warned.

As Halawa notes above, there is a cottage industry of Muslim fakes and frauds doing precisely what he’s doing within the pro-Israel world.  Among them are Walid Shoebat and now Caspian Makan, who is about to star in a new anti-Iran film produced by Aish HaTorah (under its affiliated Clarion Fund).  Numerous Iranians have told me about Makan being precisely the same type of manipulative con artist as the Manchurian Muslim.

I recalled how my grandmother had a funny name on her documents, Mizrachi, which I never heard before. She also had a small prayer book with Hebrew letters, and she prayed in the dark crying. (I thought the Wailing Wall was so named because crying was a part of prayer.)

Aside from a vague family legend, my grandmother never mentioned anything about being Jewish — but now the pieces were fitting into place…

I went to my room and called my mother. She rebuffed the story, saying, “Don’t listen to people like that. We are Muslims and that’s that.”

I decided to call my grandmother myself and bring up the subject.

I beat around the bush a bit — after all, she’d been denying it for the past 50 years — and then finally blurted out, “Grandma, are you Jewish?”

She didn’t answer the question directly, but she started crying and spoke about the years of Arab-Israeli conflict. She told me how her brother Zaki had been killed in Jerusalem before the rebirth of the State. To me that was sufficient confirmation of her Jewishness and I decided to leave it at that.

Museum of In-Tolerance Screens Muslim-Hating Film, Third Jihad

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

3rd-jihad-banner

Los Angeles’ Museum of In-Tolerance, named in honor of Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal, is now steeped in Muslim hatred. Rabbi Marvin Hier, its current leader, has endorsed the Iran yellow star hoax. Now, he’s actively promoting one of the most Islamophobic films ever produced, Third Jihad.

The Clarion Fund is listed as the sponsor of the film, though its creators (including Rabbi Raphael Shore) are affiliated with the pro-settler Aish Hatorah, a group based in Israel.  Clarion appears to be little more than a domestic shell organization designed to enable the producers to claim the film was made in the U.S.

Third Jihad features Zuhdi Jasser, who though he professes to be Muslim, seems to detest almost everything about his religion, especially anything that remotely hints of Islam existing in a political context.  Jasser runs a one man Muslim organization which is characterized in an IPS story thus:

American Islamic Forum for Democracy…according to its website, is a non-profit which seeks to “intellectually stand against the religious fanatics who exploit the religion of Islam for a nihilistic, anti-American anti-Western war.”

Jasser makes common cause with Muslim haters like Daniel Pipes and other Jewish neocons.  Years ago, he was active in CAIR but that relationship turned sour.  Now he detests everything to do with the national Muslim organization and takes every chance he can to attack it.  Third Jihad provides him all the opportunity he needs.

In the film, he purports to have discovered a radical Muslim version of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion:

“The Third Jihad” is largely based on a document the producers say the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) discovered in 2003. The film’s creators purport the document is a “’Grand Jihad Manifesto’ authored by the Muslim Brotherhood in North America, according to the promotional materials.

“The 15-page document outlines goals and strategies for the infiltration and domination of America from within,” says the release. “Among the strategies discussed is the establishment of ‘moderate’ groups, mosques and Islamic centers across North America in an effort to strategically position Islam so that it might weaken western culture and promote the implementation of Sharia Law.”

CAIR wrote a letter of protest to Rabbi Hier about the profound insult that this film poses to all American Muslims.  But Hier has about as much sensitivity to the concerns of Muslims as a deaf person would have to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

The Wiesenthal Center screenings were co-sponsored by another extremist group, the American Freedom Alliance.  One look at its website makes you realize you’re visiting territory so far off the right side of the universe it might as well be Pluto.  Here’s but a taste:

The American Freedom Alliance is a non-political, non partisan, movement of concerned Americans which identifies threats to western civilization. The organization promotes networking, activism and education in the following six areas:

* The Islamic penetration of Europe
* The collapse of academic freedom
* The identification and sources of media bias
* The growth of radical environmentalism
* The necessity for missile defense
* The dangers presented by the global governance movement

IPS notes that the Washington, D.C. screening of the film was promoted and documented by the International Free Press Society, which also heavily publicized the U.S. speaking tour of far-right Dutch Muslim hater, Geert Wilders.  He himself produced an anti-Muslim film screed, Fitna, which I jokingly called here “Dutch for garbage.”  Even the ADL has labelled Wilders “inflammatory” and Britain has refused him entry.  Both Wilders and some members of IFPS have been linked to the Belgian neo-fascist group, Vlaams Belang.

All in all, this is a nice set of bedfellows with whom the Clarion Fund and the Museum of Tolerance are sleeping.  But Rabbi Hier and Raphael Shore should remember what happens when you lie down with dogs…

I find it sad to report that just as Wilders spoke to synagogue audiences during his tour here, Detroit’s Temple Israel also screened Third Jihad.  Someone should ask Rabbi Joshua Bennett what he was thinking when he invited these hatemongers into his shul.

The brutal truth of the matter is that instead of awakening the world to the danger of radical Islam, films like this actually promote Islamophobia and are conducive to an atmosphere that provokes violence against American Muslims.

‘Islam is a Mental Illness’

Portrait of cartoonist as Islamophobic cretin

Portrait of the cartoonist as an Islamophobe

Yes it is.  It truly is.  So says Pam Geller (notice the quotation marks–I didn’t say that) of Atlas Shrugged and one of the world’s most distinguished forensic psychologists and learned scholars of Islam.  Er, not really.  The only forensic psychology this woman has ever practiced involves writing her own blog which is a repository for pathological hatred.  As for her scholarly credentials, she earned them at the Merkaz HaRav Kahane yeshiva or was it the Bernard Lewis School of Neocon Anti-Jihadism?  Actually, she is the one of the blog world’s greatest Jewish purveyors of Muslim hate.  How else could she come up with this blog post title?

MISTRIAL IN JEWISH FEDERATION MASSACRE:ISLAM IS A MENTAL ILLNESS

I only learned about this dreck thanks to her link to a blog post I wrote about the Naveed Haq murder trial, which ended in a mistrial recently.  This, as you might guess, drove the Jewish anti-Muslim right into paroxysms of rage since it clearly meant that a hard-core jihadi was abusing the legal system to get off scot free.  As for the ten years during which Haq was under psychiatric care for serious mental disorders, well mental illness be damned.  Islam itself is a mental illness, don’t you know.

An irony totally lost on Geller is that Haq hated Islam and tortured his family with his angry outbursts against the religion.  In fact, he went so far as to be baptized a Christian in his twisted pursuit of a spiritual identity.  So much for Haq as a Muslim adherent.  Has it never crossed her mind how bizarre and contradictory it would be for a healthy individual to express hatred for his religion and then go out and supposedly kill for it?  This is clearly the act of a terribly deluded, twisted and ill mind.

Daniel Pipes, a more sophisticated but no less toxic Jewish anti-Muslim chirpily calls Haq “Seattle’s jihadi.”  He rails against Seattle’s soft Jews who don’t know a committed Al Qaeda fanatic when they see one.  Actually, if you look at a picture of Haq, you see an overweight, confused, and clouded individual.

Pipes practically screams out against the shooting victims: instead of recognizing the “real” threat Haq represents they persist in their Kumbaya notion that the true enemy in this case was freely available guns and a paucity of mental health options for the seriously ill:

In response to the hideous assault on herself and her co-workers, however, [Dayna] Klein offers this pablum: “I see this as an amazing opportunity. I see this as a chance for Seattleites and people across America … to look at some serious issues about workplace safety, gun control, gun violence and empowerment.” What about jihad, Ms Klein?

…Even more appalling, the parents of Layla Bush, 23, Haq’s most severely wounded victim who is battling for her life, focused entirely on Haq’s supposed mental illness.

Imagine that, shot by a Jihadi assassin and the victim’s parents refuse to acknowledge the evil looking at them in the face and get suckered by pablum about mental illness.  Imagine Pipes’ tut-tutting as he penned this attack on shooting victim, Cheryl Stumbo’s comment, published here at this blog:

One of Haq’s victims appears to remain in utter denial of the cause of her trauma. A writer identifying herself as Cheryl Stumbo writes today:

“…The man who shot me and five of my colleagues (killing one and seriously injuring the rest of us, not to mention traumatizing the entire staff and volunteer base) was raised Muslim, yes, but by peace-loving parents, from all accounts. His problem was long-term, very serious mental illness. Let’s not attribute blame to ethnicity/religion when there are documentable medical explanations. Rationality and reason should prevail.

Ah yes, rationality and reason–not qualities in great supply when it comes to the Jewish wingnut brigade epitomized by Pipes and Geller.  And to think of it, without his link to Stumbo’s comment at this blog I might’ve missed this jewel of penetrating anti-jihadi analysis.

What specially strikes me about all this blowhardery is the unmitigated chutzpah shown by them in attacking the feelings and beliefs of the victims.  Isn’t there some element of human decency which should require anyone, even a wingnut, to grant a few shreds of credence to the views of victims of this horrible tragedy?  Isn’t it sheer effrontery for them to substitute their superior wisdom and analysis for that of those ‘poor deluded sheep,’ victims Stumbo, Klein and Bush?

The problem with Pipes is that he’s got the world figured out.  He knows who are the good guys and who are the bad guys and he’s not afraid to tell you.  And woe betide anyone who stands in his way or muddies the waters of his moral clarity.  Off with their heads.  This is the mark of the true believer–the type of person who’ll lead you on a moral crusade.  The type of person in fact has brought nothing but devastation and pestilence on the human race.  He’s the Savanarola, the Torquemada, the Robespierre of the anti-jihadi set.  Woe unto a generation and a world that feels it must turn to such a one for moral leadership.

Personally, I am deeply thankful for the courage, bravery and moral clarity of these victims.  They can teach us all a thing or two about persevering in the face of tragic violence and adversity.  My Jewish tradition calls not only for strict justice, but for mercy as well.  The Midrash teaches us that a world where there is only justice and no mercy is a hellish world that cannot long endure.  Our victims have shown us that that is true and I am proud of them for it.

It is for this reason that I have dedicated myself to the Weekend of Twinning of mosques and synagogues sponsored by the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding.  Here in Seattle, we are planning a program in the coming weeks that will partner Congregation Beth Shalom with Redmond’s Muslim Association of Puget Sound mosque.  I look forward to sharing our questions, conflicts and mutual views about our religious traditions then.
