Tikun Olam 2011 in Review: We Raised Some Hell, How Much is It Worth?

Sorry to put the question so baldly, but how much is the ground-breaking work I did here in the past year worth to you? How much support have you given or can you give to enable me to continue doing such work? If you value exposing the dirty little secrets of Israeli intelligence and you value upholding the remnants of Israeli democracy that remain. If you value peace in the Middle East and hold firm to the notion that war will make the region explode in conflagration: then I’m asking you to step forward and support this vision.

As a regular reader of this blog, here’s what you get: my portrayal of the drama unfolding in the Middle East which could lead to democratic transformation or totalitarian collapse. I not only expose hitherto unknown stories and break gag orders, but I scan the Israeli media and translate and report stories that never see the light of day in English language media. At this blog, you will find perhaps the broadest and most current collection of Israeli social analysis translated from Hebrew sources on an everyday basis. I report the hell out of stories which will get at best, glancing coverage at more mainstream sites.

In 2011, for the first time since I began this blog in 2003, I broke into the mainstream with front page profiles in the NY Times and Seattle Times and every major Israeli newspaper (except one…you guessed it: Haaretz). I was interviewed regularly on Israeli TV and interviewed by the BBC and by foreign outlets too numerous to mention. I also began contributing regularly to Truthout.

Here are some of the major stories I broke here in the past year, stories that might never have seen the light of day were it not for this blog. As you review the list, I hope you’ll think about how important these stories were to you and to the political discourse about the Israel-Arab conflict:

1. The Dirar Abusisi kidnapping which exposed collusion among the Mossad, Hamas, Jordanian and Ukrainian intelligence services to nab a Palestinian engineer and frame him for his alleged knowledge of Gilad Shalit’s whereabouts–Gabriel Gatehouse did a 30 minute BBC documentary which further exposed the case.

2. My collaboration with Shamai Leibowitz to reveal Israel’s secret campaign to demonize Iran in the U.S., which resulted in the FBI translator’s arrest and imprisonment.

3. The arrest of Dor Oved for serial death threats against Peace Now protesters. I also broke the gag order which protected the identity of his father, Shachar, a Shin Bet officer.

4. The charges of rape against Channel 2 TV reporter Yoav Even, which still remain under gag thanks to a willing Israeli judge.

5. The exposure of Israeli police officer, Meir Rotter (and son of major Israeli web portal owner, Rabbi Yeshaiya Rotter), for publicly calling for vandalism and violence against Sheikh Jarrah protesters.

6. The exposure of the collusion between Standwithus and the Israeli foreign ministry in bringing lawsuits against U.S. companies (i.e. Olympia food coop) endorsing BDS.

7. The Mossad-MEK black ops campaign to destabilize Iran’s military and nuclear research program including the missile base explosion which caused 40 deaths.

8. I offered the broadest coverage of any English language media outlet of the harshly critical views of former Mossad chief Meir Dagan toward an Israeli attack on Iran, which may’ve singlehandedly prevented or delayed an Israeli strike.

9. I offered some of the strongest critical analysis available of U.S. government claims of an Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador.

10. I offered a broad-ranging critique of Anders Breivik’s anti-Muslim manifesto before it was widely available in the media, and accused Jewish anti-jihadis like Pam Geller of being fellow travellers in his hate campaign.

11. Tikun Olam was the first English language source to identify Israeli Orthodox rabbis calling for putting Israeli Palestinians citizens in concentration camps.

12. I first reported that the IDF lied in claiming the Eilat terror attackers were Gazan, and I further wrote that the killing campaign in revenge against Gaza was based on a cynical fraud.

13.The failure of the historic preservation campaign to preserve California’s Jackling House, which Steve Jobs destroyed a few months before his death. Nonetheless, we fought the good fight.

14. The victory in my libel defense against pro-Israel activist, Rachel Neuwirth.

15. I criticize Israeli and American Jewish journalists when warranted for their timid, defensive coverage of the Israeli-Arab conflict, including the NY Times’ Ethan Bronner and Tom Friedman, and Haaretz reporters as well.

16. I reported the most comprehensive list of members of the largest Aipac Congressional delegation to visit Israel and sharply rebutted Jesse Jackson Jr.’s false assault on the Palestinians for adopting violence over non-violence in their national struggle, winning me a smear from J Street.

17. I broke a gag on reporting the story of Border Policewoman Shani Sevilla, who cocked her weapon in the ear of a blindfolded Palestinian boy and pulled the trigger it in order to frighten him. She was convicted for her act of abuse.

18. Widespread settler violence and sexual assault against Israeli peace activists at settlements like Anatot, Jalud and elsewhere along with my translation of eyewitness testimony to the savage attacks against female protesters.

Captain George (aka Doron Zahavi) Rides Again

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

One thing you have to say about Israeli torturers, you can’t keep a good one down. I reported here some time ago about one Doron Zahavi aka Captain George, an infamous commander of the IDF intelligence unit 504. Until my report, his real name was secret and no publication has reported it. I was delighted to bring his brutal acts into the public light and attach a real name to the torturer. Zahavi and his boys specialized in “interrogating” (i.e. torturing) foreign security suspects captured by the IDF abroad.

One of them was Mustafa Dirani, who Israel suspected of having held the MIA airman, Ron Arad. Zahavi subjected Dirani to the “royal treatment” which included sodomizing him with a billy club. We know this because Dirani sued the State and is attempting to hold it accountable for what its represenative did to him. One of the reasons Dirani exposed methods of torture used by Unit 504 is that the Supreme Court forced the State to allow him to proceed with his claims against it. In the process, Zahavi’s commander, a colonel whose first initial is Het, had a bout of conscience and spilled the beans. Here are some of the Zahavi’s patented methods (in Hebrew):

Het said Captain George played a role in every interrogation. “He would just come in, burst into the room, grab the suspect, shake him, get him onto the floor, punch him in the chest, yell and threaten,” Het said. Het added that George would enter with a baton, hit the suspect and threaten to insert it into his rectum if he “continued to lie or not talk.” Het also recounted an interrogation in which George allegedly stripped a suspect naked and forced him to drink tea or coffee from an ashtray full of cigarette ashes and then forced shaving cream or toothpaste into the suspect’s mouth. “I simply walked out,” Het said. Het said George dealt with almost every case involving an infiltrator into Israel from a neighboring country, including Iran, Iraq and Syria, but also in special circumstances such as the interrogation of Dirani. Het recalled an instance in which he inserted a baton into a suspect’s rectum and asked him [Het] to sit on the baton unless the suspect was willing to speak.

The Hebrew version is even more graphic. It describes further brutality by Zahavi:

He always employed brutality. I was shocked. I would sit in the room and watch [shocked]. He would come into the interrogation room, knock the detainee off the bench, jump on him, kick him, threaten that he would fuck him, or that others would fuck him and rape him. The detainees were afraid of him.

Het said that the reason Zahavi was never charged with any violation was that his superiors didn’t want to deal with investigations or committees of inquiry:

When you have dirty laundry you don’t want to wash it outside because everyone [in the unit] could be hurt by it. That’s why everyone tried to close it internally, within the family and not to take it outside.

Het continued that though everyone knew that Zahavi had gone “bad,” no one wanted to deal with it because he got results:

It didn’t matter that those results might do a grave injustice to some of the detainees because results were obtained under threat or torture. Maybe the suspect was even completely clean and had no connection whatever to the incident being investigated.

Note that Het exposes precisely the problem with CIA waterboarding and other forms of torture: you extract information from the victim, but is it good information or stuff he made up to stop the suffering? The reason this story has come back into the news is that the State has now warned Het that he may be subject to criminal prosecution for his previous testimony. On the face of it, they may be charging him with some of the crimes he admitted to participating in under Zahavi’s command. Of course, though the IDF fired Zahavi after this nastiness was exposed, it never prosecuted him.

This allowed him to rise to his level of brutality in another capacity: the Israeli police hired him to be the “liaison” with the East Jerusalem Palestinian population. Don’t you dare think of community policing when you think of what this guy does. He yells and screams at Silwan community activists and threatens them unless they offer intelligence or become spies. This is how the Zahavis of the world operate. So in this best of all possible world for torturers called Israel, Doron Zahavi lands on his feet in a cushy new job while Het, the soldier with a conscience, may end up in jail. The reason? You don’t wash the IDF’s laundry in public. If you do, they’ll come after you too. “Vengeance is mine,” saith the IDF.

Though the army closed Unit 504 after Dirani’s expose caused great embarrassment, a few months ago it brought the unit back apparently by popular demand. Now that the CIA has cut down on water boarding and other forms of torture I guess there’s high demand for the services of animals like Zahavi.

Zahavi is suing the IDF for wrongful termination. He claims that his superior officers knew everything he did and approved it. He’s likely correct and figures that they’ll settle with him rather than drag guys who may even now be cabinet ministers of members of the senior IDF command into court. Those officers may even be pressuring the State not to fight Zahavi and to prosecute Het, the source of their woes to their mind.

Leading Settler Rabbi, Owner of Major Internet Portal, Incited Price Tag Violence, Vigilantism, Genocide, Insurrection Against State

Saturday, December 17th, 2011
Rabbi Yeshaiyahu Rotter

Rabbi Yeshaiyahu Rotter

Rabbi Yeshayahu Rotter, the founder of Rotter.net, Israel’s major news and gossip portal, wrote a column in HaKol Hayehudi, a website maintained by the extremist Yitzhar yeshiva run by Rabbi Yitzhak Ginsburg (co-author of Torat HaMelech, which advocates murdering Palestinian children since they’ll grow up to murder Jews).  In the column published last March, he foreshadows (and incites) some of the most incendiary acts of violence in the entire history of price tag activities: a few days ago settlers directly attacked an IDF West Bank outpost and threw a brick at a senior IDF officer in his vehicle, injuring him.  This follows three mosque arson attacks, repeated death and bomb threats against Peace Now leaders, sexual assaults against peace activists and much more.  It’s reasonable, in fact, to wonder whether the very yeshiva students who read this article last March didn’t take it to heart.  Their current activities could in fact be seen as acts of homage to their saintly teach, Rabbi Rotter.

Unlike settler rabbis harboring similar views, Rabbi Rotter lives in Haifa.  But he might as well live in Yitzhar for all the difference in his views from those who wrote Torat HaMelech.  I call him a “settler rabbi” because he is a rabbi of the settlers even if he doesn’t live there.

biderman cartoon, little shop of terror

Haaretz cartoon: the wages of Palestinian terror are DEATH

Similarly, the good rabbi can be proud because while he carefully distinguishes his incitement to violence from actual violence, his son Meir, a police officer widely known to Sheikh Jarrah protesters for his especially violent ways, published his own incitement to violence against demonstrators in the Rotter forum.  Meir Rotter urged police officers to vandalize cars of protesters, slash tires and perform other acts of violence to teach these disgusting leftists a thing or two about how Israel should be run.  You can no doubt be certain that Rotter Jr. doesn’t just write, but he does.  Do you think Meir has been reprimanded for his extracurricular taunting at Rotter?  Of course not.  Abba can’t be quite as explicit.  He’s a rabbi after all.  But the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Rotter’s statement is a lit match on a pool of gasoline.  It is the equivalent of a bunch of neo-Nazi Skinhead thugs beating up an Arab, after which a leading Christian cleric endorses the violence.

Rabbi Rotter isn’t stupid.  He makes clear (totally disingenuously, I might add) that he is merely stating his “personal opinion” and not inciting anyone to take any action illegal or otherwise.  This, he believes, gets him off the hook.  Of course, he neglects that he runs one of Israel’s most popular websites and that his views carry weight and authority especially in the far-right settler community.

I was raised always to respect rabbis and though I’ve learned otherwise (regarding some rabbis) over the years, I try to give any rabbi the benefit of the doubt since they still retain at least an aura of moral authority.  But not Rabbi Rotter.  What he’s counseling is not just immoral and illegal, but he’s counseling violence as both a tactic and strategy for the settler movement.  Given his stature, what he’s doing is evil.  It is very hard for me to say that anything a rabbi would do is evil.  But this is.  If his was just Baruch Marzel or David HaIvri I’d just chalk it up to political sloganeering, but once you mix in Judaism, halacha and related issues, you have a rabbi declaring that our religion countenances violence, illegality and hilul haShem.  This cannot be.  This is a rabbi who must be denounced by other rabbis and anyone who cares about Judaism.  Rabbi Rotter is perverting Judaism.

The rhetoric below is little better than Der Shturmer.  In fact, it’s the Jewish equivalent.  Do we want genocidaires among us Jews?  For that is what Rabbi Rotter is.  He believes he’s saving Jewish lives and avenging Jewish dead.  But that is not what the State of Israel needs right now.  It doesn’t need avenging angels.  In fact, avenging angels in the current political climate are Angels of Death.  And they will kill Jews and Palestinians without distinguishing between them.

Here is his op-ed:

In the calculations of the murderers [Palestinians] these days more than previous ones, there is no sense of deterrence.  Every potential murderer among the Palestinians knows that he will receive the critical support from the Arabs and from Jewish leftists who hate settlers more than Arabs hate them.  The only thing that restrains murderers from slaughtering Jewish families in the Land of Israel is “price tag.”

In the past I was very much against this.  Because in essence this is taking the law into one’s own hands and you cannot have such a situation in a civilized country.  Even this statement could place me in trouble with Shai Nitzan [State prosecutor who pursues security cases].  But I am expressing an opinion and not inciting anyone to act on such an opinion.  I am not organizing anyone to do anything, only expressing a difficult opinion in a difficult time.

In a civilized society which takes responsibility for its citizens, who know that it will take every possible measure to protect their lives and will respond with all possible strength to deter such deaths, there is no reason to take such measures [as price tag].  In fact, this is something that is absolutely forbidden.  But the question is whether the State of Israel today, under the leftist domination of a twisted media, extreme leftist media figures, some of whom justify crimes against the settlers, and obtuse courts which act as if they are in Belgium or Holland–is it not the case that in such circumstances [the rules prohibiting] taking the law into one’s hands in the face of the enemy slaughtering children upon their parents [the reference is likely to the Fogel family murdered in Itamar] is no longer relevant.

As I said, for these murderers there is no deterrence, it’s only a question of opportunity.  They don’t murder every day not because anyone frightens them off, but only because they don’t have opportunity to murder children, women, and the elderly.

When there is no deterrence, when there is no price tag then there is no cost for the murderers ["everything is free"].  What is free?  Even the blessings and satisfaction offered by various Israelis who arent’t afraid to express their views [favoring killing settlers] and the media which airs these views.

In such circumstances we must examine deterrent forces like price tag and just as in a there are no limits [constraints], “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”  ”In a place where there is no man, be a man.”  To my sorrow, in everything concerning settlers and deterrence “there is no man.”

If there is only one consideration why not let it be price tag, since the only price to be paid is by the person who commits such an act.  He will find himself in prison for many years and he and his family will suffer greatly for this.    Therefore, it’s appropriate to consider the cost when considering price tag [attacks].  But this should be his only consideration and nothing beyond it [i.e. he shouldn't take into account any moral considerations either regarding the State of Israel or the intended victims].  Because the Palestinians are “dead men” [a chilling locution meaning "as good as dead" or lit., "children of death"].  There is no better definition for them.  Every one of them intends to kill us, even an infant a single month old.

There is much to consider in this racist, rancid rant.  First, I’d say Rabbi Rotter is not just an extremist, but he’s delusional.  In fact, Biderman’s cartoon above is a perfect representation of the minds of Jewish paranoiacs like him.  He has absolutely no sense of reality.  He’s little different from schizophrenics and individuals with bipolar disorder who engage in acts of violence because they misperceive reality.  But in this case, it isn’t just himself that he endangers or those around him.  He in fact incites others who respect and admire him and infects them with his own demented perception of the world.

Second, price tag as a policy will not deter a Palestinian militant as Rotter claims.  In fact, as was shown in the case of the Palmer stoning incident, those Palestinians threw rocks because settlers had previously torched their village mosque in a price tag attack.  Such acts incite Palestinian violence, not deter it.  Price tag has little to do with the Palestinians in fact.  It is actually an act of political protest meant to both damage the State’s power and protest policies which rein in settler power.  The only way price tag might become a deterrent to Palestinian violence is if it turned into mass pogroms against Palestinians.  And even then, it would still do just the opposite.  For every Palestinian into whom was thrown the fear of God, there would be two who would turn in the opposite direction and attempt to take it to Israelis and make them pay.  That’s the thing about price tag.  Everyone pays, not just the Palestinians.

The ultimate goal of price tag and Rabbi Rotter isn’t just vengeance against Palestinian murderers, it is the toppling of the civil state and its replacement with a Torah-true kingdom in which religion and nationalism have become united.  Sort of an Islamic Republic of Iran, if you will.  There will be no democracy there.  No Arabs too.  No secular Jews.  And God forbid, no leftist media.  Only Torah-true Jews.  Judeans, if you will.

You can just imagine what will be necessary to attain this vision.  How much blood will be shed.  Both Palestinian and Israeli, Jewish and Muslim.  Make no mistake, this is the cry of the genocidaire.  It was like Milosevic’s cries for Serbians to kill Croat Muslims in Srebrenica before they could kill Serbians.  Others may think of other parallel historical situations.  If your enemy has nothing but murder in his heart, then you’re justified in killing him first.  That’s why Rotter must lie and claim that it is the Palestinians who will be guilty of the genocide he wishes for them.

Settler Terror: Aberration or National Vanguard?

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

The level of settler violence, always high, has reached a fever pitch of late.  Usually the attacks go by the common name “price tag,” which alludes to a form of payback against the government for dismantling illegal settlements.  Though lately, the attacks seem to have taken on a life of their own and need no spark to ignite them: three mosques have been burned, two in the past week; a West Bank IDF outpost was trashed and a senior officer injured with a brick thrown through his car window; settlers occupied an abandoned monastery on the Jordanian border to warn King Abdullah not to interfere in matters concerning the Temple Mount; death threats and vandalism against Peace Now leaders.

In particular, the assault against the IDF unit and wounding of the officer seems to have unnerved many in Israel.  While Israelis argue about many things, there is an avowed reverence for the IDF in many circles.  Whatever you trash, you don’t trash our boys, the ones who protect us.  The most radical of the settlers have violated this national covenant because, while there are few threats against their political agenda, if the nation ever turns against them, they understand it will be the army that will face them.  In the few instances where the State musters the fortitude to dismantle an outpost or settlement, it is the army that does it.  That’s why the most radical settlers espouse outright hatred of the army and engage in regular acts of vandalism and harassment though till now, they’d never risen to this level of intensity.

All of Israel seems to wringing its hands, with the common refrain being–these settlers are not representative of the overwhelming majority of law-abiding settlers.  They’re an extremist minority within a minority.  They’re an aberration, a schandeh, an embarrassment to Israel in the face of the world community.  This Jerusalem Post editorial is typical:

What is needed is some proportion. The burning of mosques by Jewish hooligans is deplorable, but it is no more representative of the country – or the direction it is going – than Florida Pastor Terry Jones’ burning of a Koran in May was a reflection of America.

Terry Jones doesn’t live in occupied territory (unless you want to argue we should return Florida to the Pensacolas).  He doesn’t have the mortgage for the house where he resides and which sits on occupied territory, subsidized by the U.S. government.  The government hasn’t built roads to his home cutting through land belonging to a foreign nation.  Terry Jones doesn’t elect members of Congress who mirror his views precisely.  The president doesn’t meet regularly and consult with Terry Jones’ best friends.  Terry Jones hasn’t yet killed anyone, let alone a neighbor living next door to him on that occupied land.  Terry Jones is a Christian lunatic crackpot.  Settlers are most definitely not.

The Israeli government, which itself shares most, if not all of the values of the settler extremists went into emergency session to determine how to deal with the threat posed by the hooliganism and violence.  The answer Bibi Netanyahu devised is to begin treating settler criminal suspects just as badly as Palestinian security detainees.  In other words, arrest without speedy trial, denial of legal representation, etc.  So techniques and tactics which have failed to quell Palestinian resistance will now be used in a failed effort to suppress settler revolt.  Not to mention that Israel’s vaunted democratic values, what’s left of them anyway, will be further eroded.  But this doesn’t matter to most Israelis, who see security detainees as individuals who don’t deserve any rights.

There was one bridge too far for Bibi, though.  He won’t say the “T” word.  He wouldn’t call the settlers terrorists.  Doing so would allow the State to treat the settlers basically as the U.S. treats Guantanamo detainees, offering them virtually no rights at all.

Former defense minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer’s response to the settler pogroms was to recommend shooting them as the IDF would any Palestinian group which had the chutzpah to invade one of their camps.  Shimon Peres called the settlers a schandeh fahr di goyim (but in Hebrew, of course).  Jeffrey Goldberg said Israel should “declare war” on them and throw them in the desert prison where it houses Fatah and Hamas terror prisoners, Ketziot (where Goldberg himself served in the IDF).

But there is one basic, fundamental problem with everything I’ve described above and which renders Israel’s response the height of hypocrisy.  The settlers are not an aberration.  They are not a schandeh.  They don’t represent an extremist minority.  In fact, about them you could say: “L’etat c’est moi.”  The settlers ARE the State.  They may be slightly ahead of the conventional political mainstream, but as the American politicians say about Israeli prime ministers when they come to DC: “there’s no daylight between Israel and the U.S.”

I can hear liberal Zionists like Goldberg or Gershom Gorenberg protest that I overstate my case.  Even some readers will no doubt try to take me to task.  But I maintain that just as Malcolm X said after the Kennedy assassination that the latter’s killing was the “chickens coming home to roost,” so settler killings and general hooliganism are a manifestation of an overall national consensus that Israel must maintain the Occupation virtually forever.

Yes, I know there is supposedly general support for a two state solution, liberal Zionists are fond of pointing out that Bibi even claims to support this approach.  But that’s not how to determine what a nation believes.  Watch what I do, not what I say, is an old motto regarding politicians.  It holds true of nations as well.  The vast majority of Israelis may say they support two states, but they also don’t believe there will ever be peace with the Palestinians.  A nation which has given up on peace will never make the choices necessary to achieve it.

Why else are settlers who are guilty of major crimes like murder, maiming, arson, etc. almost never charged, let alone prosecuted?  Why else when a settler is imprisoned (but only for the most heinous of crimes like mass murder) are they invariably sent to a mental hospital and judged insane, rather than to prison?  Why else do Israeli presidents invariably pardon or grant clemency to almost every single Jewish terrorist?   At some point, you have to recognize that the terrorist, he is us.

So if Israel wants to maintain the Occupation.  If it approves of the ongoing theft of Palestinian land.  If it supports the building of the Separation Wall and the consequent sequestration of another 15% or more of available Palestinian land.  If it shrugs its shoulders at the constant drip-drip-drip of settler and IDF homicidal violence against both Palestinians and Israeli peace activists, then it must take responsibility for the criminals within, who are little more than mirrors of Israel itself.

Frankly, I’m sick and tired of the faces and arms raised to the sky whenever a settler commits an especially outrageous act (such as the assassination of Rabin, for one).  These are not alien acts committed by body snatchers or pod people.  These are your own kin, your own fellow citizens.  They act on your behalf.  They ARE you.  You cannot deny them.  You cannot distance yourself.  You cannot say they work for themselves alone.

From the very first moment of the settlement enterprise shortly after the 1967 War, Israel blessed it and said it was doing God’s and the nation’s work.  Even Shimon Peres, who leads the hand-wringers today in claiming these settlers are bad, bad boys who must be spanked by their mommies; even Peres went to the settlements at a critical juncture in the early stages and threw in his lot with them.  There would be no Hilltop Youth, no Baruch Marzel, no Yigal Amir without the prior approval offered by Israel’s power élite to the Greater Israel-Gush Emunim movement.

Many Israeli commentators are getting carried away talking about a cancer in the body politic.  The most extreme of the settlers are not alien to Israel, they ARE Israel.  Look at the Israeli government, at the Knesset.  The bright, shiny faces representing Israel on the world stage could just as easily be throwing bricks and Molotov cocktails at IDF officers if they took off their suits and ties (when they wear them).  Lieberman?  A former Kach member.  Yaalon?  Committed an act of insubordination against PM Sharon in refusing to evacuate Gaza settlers.  Netanyahu?  Spoke openly of expelling Israeli Palestinian citizens as recently as 1988.  There is almost a seamless web of ideological conviction and action between the current Israeli governing élite and the settlers.

What is to be done?  That’s one of the hardest questions to answer.  This is why I’ve come to despair that an answer can come from within Israel.  Until he died, on good days I believed that Sharon might take on the settlers in the same way Ben Gurion took on Begin by sinking the Altalena in 1948.  Now that Sharon is gone, there’s no one.  Tzipi Livni?  Gimme a break.  She may not even win the next Kadima Party primary, let alone become prime minister.  Barak?  Don’t even go there.  So who?

The key is outside intervention.  Israel is rapidly turning into Serbia or apartheid era South Africa or Putin’s Russia.  It is an outlaw nation.  A nation not of laws but of whims and caprices.  What Bibi wants, Bibi gets.  A TV channel airs documentaries critical of you?  Shut it down.  An NGO exposes injustices committed by the army or intelligence services?  Turn off the tap of foreign support.

Similarly, what settlers want, they get.  They are never satisfied with half a loaf when they could have the whole.  And the whole invariably involves a Palestinian village or family who owns an orchard or spring which would look might fine with some sprightly new tile-roofed settler homes sitting on that land.

The settlers have theft in their heart, which means that Israel is a nation built on theft.  And you cannot separate settlerism from Zionism (as practiced by the Israeli political élite) or Israeli national identity.  They are interchangeable.  That is why I despair that any Israeli leader would have the political will to make a virtual political suicide pact to extirpate the settlers as a power base within Israel.  For that is what it will take.  There can be no compromise, no saying that settlers may be criminals but not terrorists as Bibi does.  Someone’s got to look this scourge in the eye and say: we’ve seen the enemy and he is us.  Until then, you’re just talking about window-dressing.

I’ve been watching the bitter unfolding of a vendetta between the Israeli government and Tom Friedman, who’s writing increasingly vitriolic prose about the Netanyahu government.  The spectacle of Israel’s liberal Zionist forward cadre turning its back on the current government in a most public and disconcerting way is almost a joy to behold.  Not that Friedman has grown much wiser from the thrashing.  He’s still touting Fayyadism as the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  But as far as his analysis of the current Israeli government, he’s quite acute on that score.

The problem of course for liberal Zionists like Friedman is that they hold out hope that Israel can save itself, which I no longer believe.  It will be interesting to watch for any evolution in Friedman’s thinking on that score.

New Evidence Iran Cracked Communications System of U.S. Stealth Drone, Downed It

There is new evidence to support Iran’s claim that the U.S.’ most advanced stealth drone, the RQ-170, did not crash inside Iran due to a simple malfunction as U.S. officials claimed.  But rather, the Iranians attacked weaknesses in its GPS system to force it to land inside Iran.  Jeffrey Carr and Public Intelligence released separate statements adding credence to the Iranian claims.  Public Intelligence released a secret air force report that described serious weaknesses in the drone communications systems which might allow them to be sabotaged or jammed by those it is targeting.  After reading this report, Carr, a top cybersecurity expert wrote this:

With this report as background, the capture of the RQ-170 by Iranian forces needs to be evaluated fairly and not dismissed as some kind of Iranian scam for reasons that have more to do with embarrassment than a rational assessment of the facts.

An Iranian engineer familiar with his country’s campaign to sabotage U.S. drones described it to the Christian Science Monitor:

“The GPS navigation is the weakest point,” the Iranian engineer told The Monitor, giving the most detailed description yet published of Iran’s “electronic ambush” of the highly classified US drone. “By putting noise [jamming] on the communications, you force the bird into autopilot. This is where the bird loses its brain.”

The “spoofing” technique that the Iranians used – which took into account precise landing altitudes, as well as latitudinal and longitudinal data – made the drone “land on its own where we wanted it to, without having to crack the remote-control signals and communications” from the US control center, says the engineer.

CNN reported on December 6th that U.S. officials claimed the drone was doing reconnaissance on an “intelligence” flight over western Afghanistan and not intending to enter Iranian airspace:

A senior U.S. official with direct access to the assessment about what happened to the drone said it was tasked to fly over western Afghanistan and look for insurgent activity, with no directive to either fly into Iran or spy on Iran from Afghan airspace.

Since there are no quotations in this passage it’s hard to know what this official said.  But it may very well be that the drone wasn’t surveilling Iran from within Afghanistan but rather from within Iran itself.  This would allow the statement to be nominally true, with an emphasis on very nominally.

Today, defense secretary Leon Panetta reacted to Iran’s demand of Afghanistan that it cease serving as a host for U.S. drones and their incursions into its territory.  Instead of denying this as it had earlier, Panetta said such flights would continue:

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta, visiting with Afghanistan’s president, Hamid Karzai, in Kabul on Wednesday, said that surveillance flights over Iran would continue despite the loss of the drone.

A major about-face in U.S. policy which few in the media seem to have noticed.  So in fact, the U.S. is now admitting that it is invading Iran’s territory, which is a major escalation in the battle of wills between Israel-U.S. and Iran.

In that December 6th report, the U.S. official seemed to lie again when he said all the Iranians have is a “pile of rubble.”  Given that the Iranians are displaying an intact RQ-170 for public viewing, that would seem to give the lie to this claim as well.  Unless the U.S. would like to claim that the craft on display isn’t the one the Iranians brought down.  But then again, how did they get this one if not the way they claim?

Aside from its implications for heating up the covert U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, these reports raise another serious issue: the U.S. now has near zero credibility in almost anything it has to say about Iran.  Its claims about the nature, trajectory and imminence of the Iranian bomb program; its claims about IRG hit men seeking to assassinate Saudi ambassadors; its claims it is not involved with acts of sabotage and violence inside Iran; its claims not to be involved in cyber warfare episodes like Stuxnet…all of these have been questioned, even ridiculed by seasoned analysts.  This new development will hold U.S. protestations up for even greater disdain.  They will also cause future claims by the U.S. on these and related subjects to be treated dubiously.

I’m also reminded of U.S. claims that Osama bin Laden was not murdered in cold blood.  They have the videotape to prove what happened.  The fact that they don’t release them tells us the truth.

In fact, I’m thinking that U.S. officials may be taking lessons from the Israeli hasbara apparatus: when anything happens that makes you look bad, lie and deny it.  If someone catches you in a lie it will take so long for them to do so that you’ll already be onto the next story and the media and public will be scrambling to catch up.  When you can, make up stuff to make your opponent look bad.  This is why I treat pronouncements from the Israeli military-intelligence apparatus skeptically.  Any statement from the Israelis that is at odds with or contrary to their interests I treat with deference and respect; any statement that advances their ulterior motives must be taken with great a grain of salt unless it can be verified independently.  Now we need to do the same with our own government.

New IDF Special Forces Command to Attack Iran

Thursday, December 15th, 2011
Idf special forces iran command

Yediot headline: 'General Iran Command'

The IDF announced in the past few days that it was creating a new Special Forces command (Hebrew) that would be designed to project Israeli force far beyond its borders.  It would operate behind enemy lines and take the fight to the other side and sabotage key infrastructure and generally wreak havoc.  The Yediot headline announces, only slightly facetiously, the promotion of the new commander to “General of the Iran Command.”  Haaretz’s article (Hebrew, and a shorter version in English) also points out that this will be one of the special purposes of the new operational command.

The units in the new command would not operate in areas like Lebanon or Gaza where there are already Special Forces who could serve.  It would be designed to operate at longer distances of more than 50 miles from Israeli territory.  To give one an idea of how important the new “Deep Command” is, its military leader will report directly to the chief of staff.

The Mossad already engages in such operations, but the new command would engage in more complex operations involving numbers of personnel and military-type firepower.  It would also combine air, land and sea operations that cross operational boundaries.  That’s why Israeli reporter’s first thought is that this would be a perfect match for Iran.  My only question would be how it could operate so far from Israeli territory.  But if you think about Iran’s neighbors and the fact that American forces are based right next door in Afghanistan (where the U.S. super-drone was based which fell inside Iran last week), it’s not beyond the realm of possibility for Israeli personnel to operate secretly from territory much closer to Iran.  It might also be possible for Israeli commandos to be delivered to Iran by sea.  If it were discovered though that Israeli forces were based even secretly in a Muslim country it would be terribly embarrassing to the host nation.

Another type of mission this new unit could pursue would be something like the reconnaissance allegedly performed by Israeli forces at the Syrian nuclear site before IAF jets destroyed it in 2007.  As the IDF is known to have intercepted and destroyed purported shipments of Iranian arms in Sudan and elsewhere that were destined for Gaza, this is another role the Deep Command could perform, interdicting arms shipments while still far from Israel’s borders.  The latter is especially concerned about arms shipments to Hezbollah routed from Iran through Syria.  This too would be an operations responsibility for the new unit.

This is without doubt an escalation in the war of nerves and sabotage by Israel against Iran.  The former is already conducting a covert war killing Iranian generals and scientists and blowing up key military bases.  Now it may secure the wherewithal to mount even larger scale operations.  The drawback is that just like the Bay of Pigs invasion, in which the CIA bit off far more than it could chew, ending in a disaster that sorely embarrassed a new U.S. president, this new combat command too could attempt a mission inside Iran that could misfire badly.  Think Jimmy Carter’s abortive rescue mission of the U.S. hostages in Iran in 1979.

The new IDF deployment is also designed to spook the Iranians into believing that the ‘long arm’ of the IDF has just grown longer.  You hear this sort of testosterone-infused bragging from IDF generals, Israeli intelligence sources and their journalistic enablers all the time.  The problem is that I doubt the Iranians are spooked.  In fact, the more Israel brags about its capabilities the more likely they are to make a mistake, of which the Iranians are sure to take advantage.

IDF PR Flacks Branch Out into Tourism Promotion and Touting Nation’s Nobel Laureates

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

During the recent uproar over IDF Captain Peter Lerner’s cold-hearted Twitter #fail put-downs of the murdered Palestinian protester, Mustafa Tamimi, I spent some time reviewing his Twitter feed and that of others like Avital Leibovich and Captain Barak Raz.  Despite the fact that their lies and pimping for the IDF were to be expected since it is, after all their job to lie on behalf of their country and army, I hadn’t expected is that their PR efforts were far broader.

They view their job as promoting Israel in all its infinite variety.  If an Israeli won an international sailing competition, they’d tweet it.  Captain Lerner seems to admire Jewish comedy in particular as he retweets about Tom Lehrer.  Perhaps that #fail hashtag was another feeble attempt at Jewish wit (or snark).  I suppose also Lerner feels compelled to throw a sop to “the other side” as when he promotes the beauties of the Israeli Palestinian town of Nazareth (unless he really means to tout the higher class Jewish-only enclave, Upper Nazareth.  He also gets into the spirit of the holidays by wishing the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles “hot doughnuts, chilly nights, and cozy evenings” during Hanukah.  I tell you, if I hadn’t known Lerner was a heartless SOB who valued Palestinian lives as little more than dirt, I’d have been downright touched at his humanity.  Lerner also appears to be a cheerleader and career advisor for the foreign ministry as he wished Israel’s new ambassador (the last one was run out of town on a rail after Israel invaded Egypt to kill five Egyptian policemen) well in his new job.  He probably should’ve warned him to always know where the key to the panic room is just in case.  Lerner’s also a bit of a foreign policy wonk who takes a great interest in the goings on around the Middle East including the toppling of the ruler of Israel’s neighbors, Syria.

Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich’s specialties seems to be tourism promotion as she touts the beauty of Bethlehem during the Christmas season with a heartwarming video from the “Civil Administrator” about peace on earth and good will to man…except for Palestinians it appears.  I tell you, I never knew a Civil Administrator could be so menschlich.  Here she praises the desert beauty of Beersheva.  Leibovich’s skills are so acute she may’ve even been on the Nobel Committee which awarded Prof. Dan Shechtman the most recent Israeli Nobel Prize.  At least you might think that from her tweet congratulating him.  Israel may be the only country in the world which feels national pride when its citizens win such prizes and use them as apparent confirmation of the righteousness of the cause in oppressing the Palestinians.  But don’t ask the Lt. Col. any “political questions” because she’s not allowed to offer such opinions.  Leave aside the fact that her very job as PR flack and her Twitter feed are political statements in themselves.

It makes you wonder why the IDF would feel it needed to employ spokespeople who delved in tourism promotion, touting of the nation’s IQ, and promoting observance of the Jewish holidays.  Don’t know about you, but I always thought that soldiers fought and defended their country and should leave extraneous subjects to others.  Can you imagine a U.S. military spokesperson tweeting to a Bulgarian about how gorgeous a Rocky Mountain sunset is?  There seems to be a great deal of confusion within the IDF about its purpose.  It has ranged far outside defending the country from military threat and bled over into PR flackery and hasbara puffery.

I suppose it’s possible that Israel’s national army, like that of China or Egypt plans to branch out into numerous profit-making enterprises which could be used, in these parlous economic times, to subsidize all those mega-billion arms system purchases and R&D.  That may explain some of the diverse interests of the IDF’s spokesrepresentatives.

Finally, all of the IDF’s PR flacks seem to have majored in basic elementary math as they count fastidiously every rocket fired by every Palestinian militant which lands harmlessly in open fields.  You’d be hard-pressed though to find even a whisper about routine killings of Palestinian civilians by the IDF and Border Police.

Adelson Plans to Give $20 Million to Palestine-Denier, Gingrich

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Politico reports that billionaire uber-Israel gambling tycoon, Sheldon Adelson plans to give independent PACs acting on behalf of Newt Gingrich $20-million as early as this week.  This jibes nicely with the post I wrote a few days ago which predicted precisely this sort of mega donations flowing into the Palestine denier’s campaign.  I predicted this based on the huge subsidy Adelson provides for Yisrael HaYom, which Bibi himself credits for bringing him to power and keeping him there.  Though Adelson doesn’t own a U.S. newspaper or TV station that can offer that sort of support for Gingrich, for now a huge infusion of unregulated cash offers a great substitute.

It should be noted that Adelson is quite prickly and demanding and that he has been reputed to have funded previous far-right organizations with which he became disenchanted and turned off the spigot.  So we’ll have to watch this one to see if the romance with Gingrich maintains its ardor throughout the campaign.  Further, if the romance develops I’d expect that this would be only a downpayment from the pro-Israel hawk, as it will be used almost solely to buy ads for the Iowa caucuses.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see total gifts in the $100-million range for the entire primary and election campaign (if there is one for Gingrich).

Now, the question is what will the Jewish Republican donors do who support Romney.  Will they rise to the occasion and open their pocketbooks or sit back and let Sheldon steal the show?  I’m guessing that no one will want to get into a “mine’s bigger than yours” contest with Sheldon as he has one of the biggest wallets when it comes to supporting his hand-picked candidates.

What does $20-million buy?  It buys a candidate’s Israel policy for sure.  You can be sure that every word out of Newt’s mouth from here on concerning Jews and Israel will be personally pre-approved and scripted by Adelson.  As far as the latter is concerned, Newt is the best candidate money can buy.  If you think denying Palestine was wild, just wait to see what comes next.  Hearing Sheldon Adelson’s views regurgitated by a major American presidential candidate should be a mind-altering experience.

I’m looking for a picture of Newt and Sheldon together.  If anyone has or knows of one please let me know.  It’s gonna be a long campaign and these guys will no doubt be in the news again, repeatedly.  H/t Paul Mutter.
