New Texas Prison Regimen: Let Them Eat…Each Other

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

The news in today’s NY Times is that Texas is leading the nation in yet another innovation involving prison care: they’re going to stop allowing prisoners to order a special last meal before they are executed.  Apparently, the citizens of the state are in high dudgeon because an inmate ordered cheeseburgers, fried steak, ice cream and not only didn’t share it with them, but didn’t eat a morsel of it.  Imagine, a guy like that thumbing his nose at the extraordinary generosity shown to him by the taxpayers!  In addition, the state has cancelled lunch on weekends saving $2.5-million from the strapped state budget.

I say these pikers show no vision or ambition.  Let’s go the whole hog so to speak.  I know a way to save millions more: don’t feed ‘em any meals.  Let ‘em fend for themselves.  Let ‘em raise their own animals, butcher, cook, and eat ‘em.  And if that doesn’t work?  Marie Antoinette said: let those ol’ Parisians eat cake.  I say: let ‘em eat each other.  Just think, the fewer prisoners there are, the lower the costs to the costs to the state of caring for them.  Criminals are leeches on society anyway.  If we kill these blood suckers off early it will benefit everyone, especially their future victims.  As for the families of the prisoners eaten?  Maybe we can send ‘em a few chops and ribs as a consolation.

You say you don’t like cannibalism?  Well, how much better does Texas treat its poor and prisoners?  No, it doesn’t eat them…yet.  But considering the misery that they suffer how much better off are they living under the conditions Texas offers?  Better, sure.  But is life, even for prisoners, supposed to be just a tad better than the jungle?  In Texas, the answer is a definite Yes.

I especially admire the statement by the Democratic state senator who took away those last meals:

“If they don’t like the menu,” he said, “don’t come there in the first place.”

Real cute slogan, good sound bite.  May this man, on his death bed, when he asks for his last meal, be told the same thing.  What goes around, comes around.

UN Security Council to Vote November 11th on Palestinian Statehood

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Reuters is reporting that western diplomats say the UN Security Council will vote on November 11th on the Palestinian bid for statehood.  Tantalizingly, it says the vote is very close:

Diplomats currently expect eight council members to back the Palestinians and six to vote against or abstain. There is uncertainty over Bosnia, the three members of whose collective presidency — Muslim, Serb and Croat — disagree over which way to vote, diplomats say.

It will be terribly symbolic that the vote for statehood may be decided by a nation that was itself riven by inter-ethnic hatred and bloodshed: Bosnia.  The fact that it cannot agree on how to vote is indicative of the ongoing trauma that such strife can generate.  One wonders what sort of bribe Bibi can offer Bosnia in return for a No vote as he’s done with several other voting countries.

The recent Shalit prisoner exchange allowed the Netanyahu government and Hamas to distract the world’s attention from this Palestinian statehood bid.  But invariably, attention will be drawn back as the date approaches for the vote.  The U.S. will, of course, veto if the PA gets the nine votes necessary to approve the measure.  The veto is an obedience school prize offered by the U.S. for the far-right Netanyahu government, which opposes statehood despite the fact that its leader made a half-hearted speech several years ago endorsing the two state solution.

All this will open the door for an overwhelming vote in the General Assembly in favor of statehood, or barring that, an upgraded status which will allow Palestine to make Israel’s life much more miserable by bringing complaints before the International Criminal Court.  This is precisely the sort of reining-in that Israel detests, and which will likely moderate Israel’s behavior for the better, if not eventually lead to a peace agreement.

H/t Eyal Clyne, who notes there are 22 fateful days remaining in which to gain a recognition which has eluded Palestinians for 64 years.  The last UN vote was also in the month of November, 1947.

Former Mujahadeen Khalq Leader: Alleged Iran Terror Plot Conspirator MEK Member

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

UPDATE: I’ve updated the second paragraph below to reflect a new private e mail that confirms the original version of the paragraph, in which I’d claimed and then withdrawn the charge that a Gholam Shukari is associated with MEK.

You’ll recall that the the U.S. claimed that the Iranian alleged conspirator in the terror plot against the Saudi ambassador, Gholam Shakuri, was a Revolutionary Guard (IRG) official.  Though many Iranians have scoured every resource they could think of, none have found evidence of such a person with any IRG affiliation.  If the U.S. has such evidence it ought to produce it if it wants to be believed.  Yesterday, the well-placed Alef site, run by an Iranian majlis member who’s run for president twice, alleged that Shakuri is in fact a high level Mujahadeen al Khalq (MEK) leader.  It offered evidence to support the charge.

Today, the official MEK leadership has denied that Shakuri is a member and the U.S. has also denied the charge.  But in fact, a former high-ranking MEK leader, Massoud Khodabandeh writing in the Gulf2000 listserv and in a subsequent personal email, confirmed that there is or was a ”Gholam Shakuri” who belongs/ed to the MEK.  In his e mail to me he wrote:

As far as I, and a few others also remember, there is a guy in the MEK called Gholam Shakouri.

He cautions that there may be a Gholam Shakuri who is an IRG member as well.  But this provides far stronger evidence supporting the MEK claim than the government has offered that Shakuri is with the IRG.

In its story containing the U.S. denial, the NY Times quotes U.S. sources responding to the Iranian charge that Shakuri held or holds a U.S. passport:

Mr. Shakuri is not a United States citizen and does not have an American passport.

I have no doubt that Shakuri is not a U.S. citizen and also that he may not currently have a U.S. passport.  But this statement, at least as portrayed by Scott Shane, does not say the U.S. never issued such a passport in his name.  There are many ways and reasons a non-U.S. citizen may obtain a U.S. passport including fraud and the possibility that Shakuri was performing a task for the U.S. government or CIA and needed such a document.  I am speculating, but in light of the paucity of evidence the U.S. has offered to support its claims, we must parse the information it has distributed to try to determine credibility and accuracy.

There is another intriguing element that the Alef story added to the mix.  It claimed that Interpol had released information allowing confirmation of Shakuri as an MEK official.  The NY Times says this:

An Interpol spokeswoman declined to comment. But an American official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Interpol had discovered no link to the opposition group, calling the Iranian news report “pure fiction.”

While I do not know the protocols that Interpol follows in making public statements, I’d think that if the organization had been portrayed falsely by Iran, that it would want to say so.  I’d also think that the U.S. would be a far more important national partner to Interpol than Iran and that Interpol would also want to deny this story if it were false because the U.S. would benefit from this.  The fact that it refuses to do so raises if not a red, then surely a yellow flag for me.

The fact that a U.S. official seeks to speak on behalf of Interpol and under the cloak of anonymity is highly dubious.  If they want us to believe what they claim, then I’m afraid it will have to be Interpol speaking on its own behalf.

UN High Commission for Human Rights Begins Informal Inquiry into Anatot Pogrom

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Thanks to reporting here and the eyewitness testimony of Stavit Sinai which I translated (she was sexually assaulted during the recent Anatot pogrom), a human rights officer of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has begun an informal inquiry into the violence that occured there.  He will be interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence that may be used to make the world aware of what happened there.

Unfortunately, in cases such as this there is no way to get Israeli authorities to investigate the wild hooliganism of its citizens who are de facto acting on behalf of the interests of the state.  Sometimes, unwelcome attention from a respected international body or outside pressure is the only tool that gets Israel to observe the rule of law.

Assaf Sharon, leader of Sheikh Jarrah Solidarity movement was interviewed by Robert Wright of Bloggingheads.tv about the riot as well.  It’s a bit elementary and repetitive for those who know the incident well.  But it’s terrific that a more mainstream media outlet is putting this video up at the NY Times website.  And the interview does add some information I didn’t know, for example that Assaf’s nose was broken in the melee.  Unfortunately, Wright doesn’t appear to use Tikun Olam as a source and doesn’t link to any of my reporting (though he does link to 972 Magazine, which reported on it as well), despite the fact that I’ve tried to bring my work to his attention and and that of Blogginheads.tv editors a number of times.

Iran Reports Alleged Terror Conspirator Actually MEK Leader

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

I’ve been able to confirm with enough comfort level to publish the report from Iranian media that Gholam Shakuri, the alleged Iranian Revolutionary Guard co-conspirator in the Iran terror plot, is a member of the Mujahadeen al-Khalq (MEK).  This is the group which engages in acts of terror within Iran in order to overthrow the regime.  It also collaborates with the Mossad in spreading disinformation about the Iranian nuclear program.  MEK has paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaker and consulting fees to U.S. political figures like Howard Dean in a so far vain attempt to get the group removed from the Treasury Department list of recognized terror groups.

Yesterday, the NY Times published this report:

Iran injected a new twist on Tuesday into the week-old American accusation of an Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington, asserting that one of the defendants really belongs to an outlawed and exiled opposition group.

The defendant, Gholam Shakuri, identified by the Justice Department as an operative of the élite Quds Force of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, is actually a “key member” of the Mujahedeen Khalq, Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported.

The agency did not explain the group’s possible motive but left the implication that the plot was a bogus scheme meant to frame and ostracize Iran.

… “The person in question has been traveling to different countries under the names of Ali Shakuri/Gholam Shakuri/Gholam-Hussein Shakuri by using fake passports including forged Iranian passports,” Mehr said.

…Mehr said it had learned what it called the new information about Mr. Shakuri from Interpol but was not more specific.

Muhammad Sahimi, working directly from Iranian media sources reports:

Alef, the website published by Majles deputy Ahmad Tavakoli, claimed that the second person named in the U.S. Justice Deaprtment’s indictment of the alleged culprits in the plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador in Washington, D.C., is a member of the Mojahedin-e Khalgh Organization (MKO, or MEK). According to Alef, Gholam Shakuri — who, the website claims, has used the aliases Ali Shakuri and Gholam-Hossein Shakuri — is a high-ranking MKO member who has used faked passports to travel to various countries over the years. One of those passports was issued on November 30, 2006, in Washington with the number K10295631. Alef asserted that its information was obtained through Interpol. The website’s claims cannot be independently verified.

As I noted above, MEK has a history of planting fraudulent “evidence” designed to support the claim that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon.  It therefore is entirely possible that it cooked up this scheme to further tarnish Iran’s reputation and relations with western countries.  My only question is wouldn’t they care if they hatched such a slipshod plot that it made Barack Obama end up looking like an utter fool?

For those wondering, Alef is a website published by a well-connected Iranian legislator who’s run for president twice.

UPDATE: Trita Parsi has suggested using caution regarding this story since both the MEK and Iran have their reasons for the claims and accusations made, meaning it’s hard to pinpoint with precise accuracy who may be right or wrong.  So I wanted to add this to the mix.

Fox-Werrity UK Scandal Exposes Meeting With Mossad Chief and New Wealthy Pro-Israel Donor

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

The Daily Telegraph added some tantalizing new details to its reporting on the Liam Fox-Adam Werrity case.  Fox, you’ll recall resigned last week as defense minister in the Tory led government.  He had allowed a close personal friend to masquerade as a trusted aide in meetings around the world.  All the while the friend, Werrity seemed to be carrying on his own personal freelance foreign policy that included, among other things, attempting to topple the Iranian regime à la Michael Ledeen.  The difference is that Werrity actually had entre to the British political élite, while Ledeen seems to be a wannabe warrior long removed from his days of influence during the Reagan era.

Now the Telegraph reveals that Werrity and Fox met not just with Mossad agents at a dinner during an anti-Iran security conference held in Herzliya (probably this conference), they actually met with Meir Dagan, Mossad chief at the time:

The Daily Telegraph can disclose that Mr Werritty and Dr Fox had a private meeting with the head of Mossad, Israel’s secret service. The meeting may undermine the former defence secretary’s assurances that national security was not jeopardised.

We know that the Mossad is extremely interested in promoting violence, disruption and regime change in Iran.  It’s why it has assassinated nuclear scientists and possibly been involved in massive sabotage at Iranian missile facilities and other acts of state sponsored terror.  It appears interested as well in supporting the Iranian insurgencies represented by the MEK and Jundallah.

That Dagan would meet with Werrity and Fox to discuss these issues isn’t surprising.  Of course, Dagan would want to find out what Werrity knew.  Even MI6 appeared interested enough to hold debriefings with Werrity after his return from trips to Iran where he supposedly met with the political opposition.  But the real question should be what specifically was discussed in these meetings.  Did they discuss regime change?  If so, I would think the British government and its citizens would be interested in the fact that someone masquerading as a British government official was jetting around the world in order to foment rebellion in Iran, in contradiction to the official position of the actual government.

Another new development in the story is the addition of yet another Anglo-Jewish fatcat to Werrity’s donor list.  The new arrival is Mick Davis, a mining magnate who has been the chair of the British Board of Deputies, the leading body of UK Jewry.  He is now chair of the United Jewish Appeal, the leading fundraising body for British Jewry.  One of its purposes is to raise funds that support English and Israeli charities.  The Guardian reveals that three of Britain’s wealthiest pro-Israel donors gave at least 140,000 pounds to support Werrity’s Bondsian jaunts on behalf of a new pro-Israel world order.

I find it laughable that the government investigation into Werrity’s dealings finds he derived no financial advantage from his relationship with Fox.  What do you call those 140,000 pounds?  Do you really think six of the most powerful UK British Jewish leaders gave him that money because they thought he was a fine chap?  Of course they were wowed by his access to Meir Dagan and Liam Fox.  And Werrity used these funds to live in a grand style flying first class in his world travels while staying at the finest luxury hotels.  If this isn’t corrupt at the worst and a conflict of interest at the least, then British politics are even more ethically-challenged than I thought.

Channel 10 Tzinor Layla Interview on Bibi and Barak’s Next Excellent Adventure

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

I’m dating myself here, but there once was a movie called Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, hence the title of today’s post.  The adventure” in the title of course refers to Bibi Netanyahu and Ehud Barak’s next military adventure.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an Israeli prime minister in search of political fortune must be in want of a war.  Most previous Israeli prime ministers have had an excellent war to add to their political resumes, but poor Bibi has none.  During his previous term he didn’t even get to invade Lebanon or bomb any nuclear reactors in Syria.  What a diadem to add to his political crown if he could just be a bit more like Menachem Begin, Ariel Sharon or Yithak Rabin and lead the nation to victory in a rollicking good war.

I write all this by way of introducing a TV interview I did yesterday for Channel 10′s Tzinor Layla news program (at 6:20 of the above video), which was naturally devoted to the (then) coming prisoner exchange that would free Gilad Shalit and hundreds of Palestinian prisoner.  A number of well-placed Israeli military and intelligence correspondents have been writing with virtual certainty that the next major project on Netanyahu’s agenda is an attack on Iran.  That’s the subject of the interview.  I haven’t seen the video so I don’t know how much of what I say in English will be audible.  But Israelis can certainly watch it and hopefully English speakers as well.

Hey, New York, Freedom Theater is in Town!

Monday, October 17th, 2011
freedom theater

Freedom Theater director Udi Aloni with actors during rehearsal of 'While Waiting' (Michael Nagle/NYT)

All you Jews (and Palestinians and anyone else) at the Occupy Wall Street protests are hereby urged to take a break tomorrow night.  That’s because you have a rare opportunity to see Palestine’s Freedom Theater perform their adaptation of Waiting for Godot, which they call While Waiting (it appears they had to change the name of the play to satisfy objections by the Beckett estate to casting women in the leading and supporting roles) at Columbia University’s Miller Theater.  In the event the performance is sold out, there will also be an October 30th performance at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater in a benefit for the Theater.  Tony Kushner will host the event and David Byrne and other New York cultural/musical luminaries will appear.

The founder of the ensemble, Juliano Mer Khamis, was murdered outside the Theater in Jenin about six months ago in a crime that has never been solved either by Palestinian or Israeli authorities.  Instead of investigating, the Israelis arrested the actor playing Pozzo in the performance and held him for a month before releasing him with no charges.  They also attacked the Theater and arrested two of the key staff.  This was all in some way understood, only by the IDF mind you, as an effort to solve the murder.  But certainly not an attempt to harass the company.  Certainly not.

You see, official Israel is deeply threatened by Israelis who act in solidarity with Palestinians.  The fact that Mer-Khamis was the child of a Jewish-Palestinian marriage must also have enraged official Israel in the same way miscegenation drove Southern white supremacists around the bend in the 1960s.

The actor and director certainly enraged the radical element within the Palestinian community as well by criticizing the narrowness of gender roles in its society.  Hamas and the Islamists were none too happy with him.  But that only makes Juliano Mer-Khamis a more compelling figure.

New Yorkers, whatever you do–get thyself there.
