Israeli Ministers, IDF Commander to Honor Racist Rabbi

Monday, July 4th, 2011
rabbi dov lior

Rabbi Dov Lior, 'Beloved of the Settlements,' honored by ministers Eli Yishai, Bogie Yaalon and IDF commander (Flash90)

Just yesterday I wrote a post in which I called the police interrogation of Rabbi Dov Lior for incitement a “charade,” since the authorities cannot nor will not do anything meaningful to address the savagery and violence of his views against Palestinians and Israeli democracy.  He supports the murder of Palestinian children and yesterday Yisrael HaYom quoted him as calling Israeli democracy, the “idol worship of our time.”  The article quoted a supporter attacking the “Bolshevik government” which “kidnapped” the holy rabbi for questioning.

Now comes news (h/t to Dena Shunra) that the Hebron settler council will honor Lior (Hebrew) with the “Beloved of the Settlements” award.  That’s certainly nothing unusual.  But who will be guests of honor at this glorious simcha?  None other than deputy prime minister and former chief of staff Bogie Yaalon, Interior minister and Shas party leader Eli Yishai, and the current IDF commander for the West Bank.  Not only will they appear, but they will speak in the rabbi’s honor.

This is either a country in the midst of a schizoid identity crisis or else it’s a country that’s only fooling itself when it says it embraces liberal western values of democracy and human rights.  These are mere words.  By their actions, the power loci of the Israeli elites show what they really “cherish” and value.

Though Bibi may use his most grave voice when proclaiming that “no Israeli is above the law” in claiming to support such police questioning, who does Israel think it’s fooling?  This moral munchkin and spiritual mentor of the Jewish terror underground, is an exemplar of not just the Israeli rabbinate or the settler movement, but he figuratively dances at the weddings of the Israeli élite.  He is their darling.

Gaza Flotilla Boats Detained by Greeks to Sail; ‘Flight of Return’ Set for Friday, Ben Gurion Airport

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Mary Hughes-Thompson, who is aboard the Canadian ship of the Gaza flotilla, the Tahrir, which is anchored in Crete and blocked by the Greek Coast Guard is about to attempt to set sail to join its comrade boats who’ve already departed and plan to join up in the Mediterranean before they proceed to Gaza.  The Audacity of Hope has been forced to dock at a Greek military facility and there seems little likelihood it can break this new Greek siege.  To further sabotage the U.S. ship, its captain has been arrested on a trumped-up charge of “endangering the safety” of the passengers because he put to see without gaining permission from the authorities to do so.

But the Tahrir will make a valiant effort to sail.  As Mary says:

…We expect to be boarded and arrested, hopefully without the tactics expected from the IDF.  My impression is that since Israel has outsourced the blockade to Greece, we will challenge Israel on Greece’s shores.

In the comment threads here we’ve had a hearty debate about the likelihood of involvement of the IDF or Mossad in sabotaging the Irish ship, Saorise, in Turkish waters and the Audacity of Hope, each of which sustained sabotage damage.  Here Ethan “Eytan” Bronner, no friend of the Flotilla, effectively concedes that he credits the reports of Israeli attack on the ships:

Israel, for its part, has been campaigning against the flotilla and perhaps doing more — some of the boats have suffered sabotage.

In this portion of Bronner’s report on the Flotilla he as usual publishes an attack on the Flotilla without having a shred of evidence to justify his conviction:

The Turkish group I.H.H., which helps sponsor the flotillas, has ties to Hamas, and Israeli and Western concern that violence could occur if the flotilla sets sail does not seem far-fetched, despite the organizers’ vows to the contrary.

I have heard many Hasbara sources claim IHH has ties to Hamas but never seen any proof of this.  More importantly, Bronner himself never has presented such proof.  It seems journalisitcally rash to advance such a controversial claim without at least supporting it with some proof.  Further, since IHH is not at all involved in the current Flotilla, it is not only ‘far-fetched,’ but downright fraudulent to base a claim that violence might occur if the Flotilla sets sail on the fact that violence occurred last year on a boat sponsored by IHH.  Bronner has once again provided no evidence whatsoever to support the notion that THESE Flotilla organizers will resort to violence.

Within the article he mentions the outrageous, unfounded Israeli claim that passengers plan to pour sulfur on boarding soldiers and light it on fire.  The only refutation he offers is a statement by the organizers that the claim isn’t true.  But in this case that isn’t good enough.  When a government flat-out lies, it’s the job of a journalist to either say so explicitly or at least say the government has provided no proof for its charges.  The fact that he does not do so indicates not just his shoddy journalism, but bias and bad faith.

In the meantime, 700 Palestinian peace activists plan to fly into Ben Gurion airport this coming Friday, as part of the Flight of Return.  They will promote the notion that Palestinians should be free to “return” to Israel and travel and move freely within a country they or their parents were driven from in 1948:

“We are flying to Ben-Gurion on July 8 to visit friends in Palestine, and we insist that our own governments support us in doing so. Supporting our visit to Palestine will be one small step towards bringing about the freedom of movement for all the peoples of Israel/Palestine that is essential for peace and justice in the Middle East,” the group added.

…“We are not trying to do anything threatening. Everyone should have the right to free movement and travel in the Palestinian territories. That is what this action is about,” [Laura Durkay] said. “We are here in the spirit of peaceful solidarity.”

972 Magazine noted another important aspect of the protest:

Palestinians wishing to travel abroad must apply for special permission from the Israel authorities. Those wishing to travel to the United States must first obtain a permit to visit the American Consulate in East Jerusalem and obtain their visa.

Human rights organizations have often cited the complete authority over entries and exits from the occupied territories as further proof of Israel’s effective control over Palestinians’ lives, in stark contradiction to the claim that since the Oslo agreement, “Palestinians run their own business.”

The Israeli media, undoubtedly under the influence of the government and police authorities have described the protest as yet another provocation or as an attempt to start a riot at the airport.  The Israeli spin machine manufactures the same paranoid responses to legitimate sources regardless of content or intent.

Rabbi Dov Lior: ‘Democracy, Idol Worship of Our Time’

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011
rabbi dov lior

1,000 well-wishers greeted Rabbi Dov Lior on his release from police custody

For those of you not privy to the vicissitudes of daily Israeli politics, you may not have heard of the long-running charade involving Rabbi Dov Lior, one of Israel’s leading extremist settler rabbis.  Keep in mind that he, and hundreds more Jewish clerics with the same or similar views, are on the public payroll with salaries paid for by Israeli taxpayers most of whom are secular and revolted by their homicidal political-theological views.

Rabbi Lior wrote a forward endorsing the book, Torat Hamelech, which promotes the murder of Palestinian children on the theory that they’ll all grow up to kill Jews anyway.  He was then “asked” to show up for interrogation by the police on charges that he was promoting incitement.  Lior angrily refused.  This went on for months bouncing back and forth.  Only recently has he been forced to appear to answer for his views.

It should also be noted that Nahum Barnea, Israel’s most popular columnist, says Lior played an instrumental role in either directly abetting or inspiring other more flamboyant crimes like the Baruch Goldstein massacre and Rabin assassination.  Of course, he’s never been made to answer for any of that since the Israeli settler movement has the government by the cajones.

Today, Yisrael Ha-Yom quotes (Hebrew) Lior as equating himself to Father Abraham, saying “they investigated him too.” He may be referring to Abraham’s father who interrogated him after he destroyed the idols of his uncle.  The only difference is that Abraham didn’t advocate killing the children of idol-worshippers or anyone else for that matter.  So the self-flattering analogy falls a bit flat.

Among the choicest of his statements in the article is that Israeli democracy (i.e. the democracy that would force a righteous rabbi like him to undergo the effrontery of police interrogation) is the:

“Idol worship of our time.  Once there was Baal and Ashtera [Biblical pagan gods worshipped by Israelites and their neighbors], now there is democracy.  Instead of being a form of government, it’s become a value in itself.  This is fine for people who live a life of licentiousness, because they want no limit on themselves or their appetites.”

Yeah, when the [Torah] revolution comes, he’ll line up all the Jewish democracy advocates and shoot us.  On second thought, there’s no provision for shooting as punishment for a capital offense in Torah, so we’d be drawn and quartered or hung or stoned.

Lior also, in the article, calls for Israel to “send the terrorists around us back to their countries of origin.   Only then can we have peace here.”  So where would he propose sending indigenous Israeli Palestinian citizens?  Back to Africa, since if you go back far enough, that’s where we’re all from??

The article quotes a Yair Lior, likely a son or relative, as saying about the Rabbi’s arrest and detention:

Because the authorities kidnapped him, we have to make sure he has a proper security detail of at least two to accompany him against the Bolshevik [i.e. the police and prosecutor] government.

Do NOT make the mistake of believing these homicidal Jewish terrorists and their rabbinic enablers are marginal or aberrant.  They and their views are not only at the heart of the settler movement, they’re at the heart of the ruling Likud party and its governing coalition.  This is Israel, at least Israel at the present moment.  Though it pains me to say so.

Also keep in mind that Dov Lior is welcome in Britain anytime, while Sheikh Raed Salah, who’s never advocated killing anyone, is in a British prison appealing an order banning him from the country.  And Dov Lior is likely welcome in the U.S. as well where his supporters probably raise tons of tax-deductible dollars to support his holy works.  With Israel now added to the enhanced terror watch list, what’s the likelihood that we’ll ban someone like Lior from our shores?  I know, don’t hold your breath.

Department of Homeland Security: Israel ‘Promotes, Produces, Protects Terrorists’

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

This is one of the stranger and more interesting news to come out of the Department of Homeland Security.  Last May, DHS issued a report which enunciated the rules Immigration and Customs Enforcement would use to arrest, detain and deport undesirable aliens.  Part of this document lists countries whose detained nationals will be subjected to enhanced  examination.  To my shock, Israel is on the list, along with some of seamier countries of the world including Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia and others.  It’s also interesting to note the language used to describe these countries:

Screening Aliens From Specially Designated Countries

In addition to the Terrorist Watchlist screening, ICE uses a Third Agency Check (TAC) to screen aliens from specially designated countries (SDCs) that have shown a tendency to promote, produce, or protect terrorist organizations or their members (see appendix D for a list of SDCs).

So the question is: who is DHS thinking of when it included Israel on the list?  Settler extremists?  Or Israeli Palestinian leaders like Sheikh Raed Salah, who is in a British prison resisting his banning order from the Home Office?  Or is DHS leaving its options open to include both groups?

nadia matar calls for assassination of mahmoud abbas

Nadia Matar, defending convicted spy, Jonathan Pollard; called for assassination of Mahmoud Abbas in NY synagogue; target of DHS future investigation?

My devout hope is that this designation could allow DHS and ICE to prevent the most homicidal of the settler leaders from spreading their hate here.  The type of person I’m thinking of is Nadia Matar of Women in Green who told an audience at a Manhattan synagogue that Mahmoud Abbas should be assassinated.  She did all this while on a fundraising trip here to raise money to support the theft of Palestinian land on behalf of settlers and other acts of violence and fraud.  I see no reason why our government should allow such individuals to roam freely and spread their hate.  Not to mention that the funds they raise here are tax-deductible, meaning that U.S. citizens help subsidize the gifts.

But would DHS and the Obama administration actually have the chutzpah and backbone to take on the murderous among the settlers who arrive on our shores?  Surely it would be far easier for them to target Israeli Palestinians who Israel does a much better job of criminalizing as spies and terrorists.  It would be easier to follow Israel’s lead on this rather than striking out on our own and actually applying the laws and rules uniformly to both sides.  I’d love to be surprised.  We shall see.

We should be forthright and concede that DHS is falling all over itself to explain that because Israel is listed does not mean the U.S. is calling Israel a terrorist state.  It means that certain citizens of Israel may be designated as terrorists.  But the plain fact is that if DHS wanted to write the above quoted passage differently it easily could’ve, but it didn’t.  So we have a perfect right to parse the language of that statement and note that it states clearly that Israel “has a tendency to promote, produce, or protect terrorist organizations.”

This blog has documented scores of examples of Jewish terrorists, some of whom are U.S. citizens, running free in Israel.  Most of them, even if they’re monitored, never face charges, let alone imprisonment for their crimes.  Those few who do face charges, and are held nominally accountable for their crimes (like Jack Teitel) usually end up in mental asylums rather than prison, under the assumption that not even a Jewish terrorist deserves prison (though of course Palestinian terrorists DO).

We’ll have to see how DHS enforces this provision; whether it singles out Israeli Palestinians alone or whether it applies it fairly and proportionately.

Israeli Deputy Prime Minister: Flotilla Sabotage Thanks to IDF

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Well, Bogie Yaalon’s actual words quoted in Ynet (Hebrew) were: “Those problems the Flotilla’s having in realizing their plans didn’t just happen. They’re thanks to the work of the political echelon whose focus was on diplomatic political issues, and operational work of the IDF to prepare for every possible eventuality.”  The last phrase is doublespeak which both reveals and conceals at the same time, a formulation any Israeli would recognize as not just alluding to an IDF role in sabotage, but practically bragging about it.  What possible role could the IDF be playing currently in frustrating the plans of the Flotilla if it isn’t the round of sabotage that struck at least three boats?  Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink wink.

Lest you doubt the guy’s bona fides, he’s a former IDF chief of staff and current minister for strategic affairs.  His statement of course was meant to toot his ministry’s horn since he was claiming credit for the role he played in the sabotage.

Apparently the foreign ministry didn’t get the memo and took a totally contradictory tack in attacking the credibility of the Flotilla activists who claimed sabotage.  Yigal Palmor, clearly in his uber-mendacious mode said this:

Paranoids, cry-babies.  The Flotilla organizers haven’t even done the minimum to prove there was sabotage.  They live in a James Bond movie.

You mean an admission by the deputy prime minister of his own government doesn’t suffice?  As for James Bond, whenever an Israeli journalist wishes to praise the work of the Mossad in assassinating Iranian scientists or implanting computer worms in Iranian nuclear facilities, he uses the James Bond example meant as a compliment.  What I think Palmor really means to say is “We’re James Bond and we’re proud of it.”  That’s what Ronen Bergman said of Meir Dagan’s Mossad a few months ago before the chief spook retired.

Back in the 60s, we used to hear a great song by the Mamas and the Papas: “And the beat goes on.”  In the Israeli government’s case, it’s “the lies go on.”  Yesterday, the NY Times dutifully reported more rubbish from the IDF:

…The Israeli Army told journalists that Tarek Hamud, 32, a son-in-law of Khaled Meshal, the Damascus-based head of Hamas, was with the flotilla in Athens, playing a leading role in its organization. Mr. Hamud leads the Palestinian Association of Hamas, according to Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich, a military spokeswoman.

Flotilla activists denied any links to radical or terrorist organizations and said they had never even heard of Mr. Hamud. Izzat al-Risheq, a spokesman for Hamas in Damascus, said Mr. Hamud “has nothing to do with the flotilla in any way. He is in his house right now in Damascus.

Given the mounting pile of steaming bulls(^t being served by the Israelis to the world on this subject, why in God’s name would anyone believe Yigal Palmor’s protestations?  And note that in his statement he didn’t deny the charge of sabotage, which he could’ve done.  He merely stated that the Flotilla hasn’t proven the charge.  By which I presume he means he’d like to see an underwater video of a diver in an IDF wetsuit sawing off the propeller shaft of one of the boats.  Maybe there could be a little snappy Hebrew dialogue to go along with it.  Yeah, in that case, they don’t have a smoking gun.  But in Israel’s case you don’t need one.  If you believe the opposite of what they tell you in most cases you can’t go far wrong.

Isn’t it ironic that if the Israeli Navy was involved in this sabotage operation it might’ve been the same unit Shayetet 13, the one which murdered nine Turkish activists on the Marmara last year, which provided the personnel for the underwater sabotage.

The Greeks have struck another blow against the Audacity of Hope by arresting its captain for allegedly endangering the passengers (presumably by sailing without explicit permission of the port authorities).

I propose that we begin a boycott of Greek tourism and Greek goods until Greece gets a bit of spine and stops being Bibi’s enforcer.  If the Greeks are weak enough that Bibi’s blandishments enticed them to stop the boats, perhaps they’ll understand the import of a boycott against them by supporters of peace and justice around the world. What’s really ironic is that the current prime minister’s father, Andreas Papandreou, was a devout socialist and supporter of Palestinian rights.  He would be rolling in his grave at the spinelessness of his son, George, the current Greek prime minister.

Papandreou is assisted in pandering to Israeli interests by the fact that the Greek public is so distracted by the economic crisis threatening their country, that they likely have little patience or energy to be enraged, as many of us are, by the government’s poodling for Israel.

Israel Announces Ten Year Ban on Hope

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011
bust of bibi

Bust of Bibi sculpted by Code Pink and destined for Greek Parthenon (UPI/Kevin Dietsch)

Israel, which recently threatened to ban for ten years any foreign journalist joining the Gaza flotilla, has announced that it also plans to ban the following words and phrases for ten years: Audacity, Hope, liberation, Tahrir, Nakba, Naksa, Al Quds, Occupation, BDS, boycott, divestment, sanctions, targeted assassination. It is also considering a ten year ban on any living organisms found on the Flotilla ships including various bacteria, rodents, barnacles, etc.

Greece is considering following suit.  It may ban the following words: bailout, bankruptcy, Merkel, complicity, collaborator, stooge, deadbeat, austerity, courage, bravery, spine.  If you have any suggestions for “dangerous” words for either country, please add them in the thread.

Prime Minister Papandreou has announced plans to place a bust of Bibi Netanyahu in the new Parthenon museum.  Bibi, in turn, is planning to drink a bottle of choice Greek retsina (if there is such a thing) until he can’t tell the difference (ad lo yada)* between the names Papandreou and Obama.

* A Purim custom of drinking until one can’t tell the difference between the names Mordechai and Haman.

Michael Weiss Supports Banning Palestinian, But Not Israeli Jewish Racists

Friday, July 1st, 2011

This is getting to be a habit.  I seem to have gotten under Michael Weiss’ skin.  He takes umbrage with a minor error in my blog post attacking his hysterical coverage of Sheikh Salah’s banning.  I said that his Henry Jackson Society brought Doron Almog via video uplink to speak at a British conference on avoiding Israeli accountability for war crimes.  I did that because a British blogger informed me that this was the case.  It turns out that the the overall conference was sponsored by Dore Gold’s Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and that the Jackson Society paid for Gold to attend.  Almog, who was featured on a panel together with Gold, appeared thanks to Gold’s group.  Got that?  You can be forgiven for having a bit of trouble following all the permutations of sponsorship.  You go to the conference page and see if you follow it any better than I could.  But that’s it.  That’s the extent of his rebuttal of my claims against him.

So what has he refused to address?  An awful lot it seems.  I’ve noted that while Weiss raves about Sheikh Salah’s alleged anti-Semitic outbursts, he says nary a word about similar anti-Muslim outbursts by Israeli Jewish leaders too numerous to mention including, but not limited to foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman.  I pointedly asked Weiss whether he supported their banning.  Whether he supported the banning of settler extremist and Likud party leader Moshe Feiglin, who actually was banned by a previous Labor government.  Not a word from Weiss on those much more salient, substantive issues.

So let’s challenge him again, Michael, tell us what your specific view is on entry to Britain for Israeli Jewish racists.  What are your criteria to justify banning alleged Palestinian racists and are there any Israeli Jews who would justify banning?  Do you support the banning of Feiglin?  Lieberman?  Rabbis Dov Lior or Dov Wolpe, who are the Jewish “spiritual” equivalents of Salah’s supposed anti-Semitic views?  By the way, Michael, if you know Hebrew, which is doubtful, you should read this Haaretz article about Lior which notes that while he publicly supports the murder of Palestinian children, Salah does not support the murder of Israeli Jews.

Weiss also rewrites history I’m afraid, about our past when he was an editor at the ill-fated online magazine, Jewcy.  What actually happened, as opposed to what Weiss claims, is that he invited me to transfer my blog to Jewcy, which was a big move for me to consider since it meant my blog would essentially be owned by Jewcy as I understood it.  I told him initially that I was interested.  He said he would send me a contract to review.  And then I waited, and waited, and waited.  And I called him a few times asking in a friendly way what was going on.  He always replied that things were in the works and I’d receive the contract shortly.  But it never came.

Then, after two months or so of waiting, the Gaza war intervened.  In looking through the Jewcy site, I noticed 20 posts or so addressing the war in various guises.  I counted two posts that could be construed to be even remotely critical.  Weiss only refers to one writer, Adam LeBor, as offering this view.  There was probably at least one other.  So I began to think of what I would represent in such a mix of right-wing pro-Israel coverage.  At that time, I didn’t know Weiss to be the spiteful, mean-spirited egotistical fellow I now know.  So I called him in an attempt to ask forthright, candid questions about the editorial content and direction of Jewcy.

Eventually, he became so angry he told me to take a hike in an incredibly vicious, vitriolic fashion.  Which was fine with me.  In fact he did me a favor.  Within a week or so of Weiss’ banishment, came news that pro-Israel neocon Michael Steinhardt and the other money-bags behind the venture were pulling the plug.  Then Weiss himself was out of a job.  It seems to have stopped his U.S. literary career in its tracks as he made his way subsequently to England, where he’s become the toast of the tawdry tabloid circuit with his Telegraph blog.

Jewcy’s imminent demise was likely the real reason he never sent the contract.  But, as he seems to prefer opacity over transparency, he didn’t want to let me know the website was about to go belly up and they couldn’t have paid me if they’d wanted.

Among Weiss’ other vain attempts to demean me he talks nonsense of a long night of the soul regarding whether I should move my blog to Jewcy.  To which, all I can say is that at least I have a soul.  Where his should be there’s an empty place filled with hollow words and silver-tongued vitriol.

I wonder why Weiss never told his readers at Harry’s Place about Jewcy’s demise and the real reason he refused to send that contract?

While you’re there take a look at the comment thread and note the high level of discourse there including pathetic ad hominem attacks on my physical appearance.  It’s makes the threads here look like the Oxford debating union.

Greek Commandos Hijack Audacity of Hope, Bankrupt Government Does Israel’s Bidding, Sabotages Hope

Friday, July 1st, 2011

greek coast guard hijack audacity of hope

Greek coast guard hijacks Audacity of Hope earlier today (Yiorgos Karahalis/Reuters)

The Greek government has now become a direct accomplice of the Israeli plan to sabotage the Gaza flotilla.  When the Audacity of Hope set sail earlier today from its Greek port, a Coast Guard boat intercepted it followed by another full of Greek commandos.  Apparently a nation teetering on the brink of bankruptcy can muster armed to the teeth commandos to commandeer an unarmed civilian vessel full of peace activists.  Instead of saving its country from impending collapse, Greece is petrified of 60 American peace activists in a small boat sailing to Gaza.  For shame.  But this is what happens when your country has mortgaged its future through economic indulgence, leaving itself open to the pressure, blandishments, and extortion of other nations.

In fact, this Haaretz story notes (English) that Bibi Netanyahu engaged in direct personal lobbying of the Greek PM and promised Greece help in its sensitive bailout negotiations with the EU:

Netanyahu recently decided to come to the aid of his newfound friend in a meeting of foreign ministers and European leaders, imploring them to provide Greece with financial aid.

“Netanyahu has become Greece’s lobbyist to the European Union,” an Israeli diplomat said.

In recent weeks, as efforts to stop the impending pro-Palestinian flotilla to Gaza came to a head, Netanyahu reaped the benefits of his investment in Israel-Greece ties and his gamble on the European country paid off.

Several of Israel’s good friends among my readers have taken me to task for my alleged fantasies about collusion between Israel and Greece and my claim (along with that of the Flotilla organizers) that Greece’s current financial crisis has virtually forced it into Israel’s embrace.  Now we have our proof.

Further, Mary Hughes-Thompson, a co-founder of the Gaza Flotilla movement and a passenger on the Canadian boat, Tahrir (also stopped by the Greeks), writes this tonight:

After more than a week of stalling by the Greek authorities, while we were required to produce one form, one authorization, one receipt, one piece of paper after another… and inspection after inspection even though our boat had already passed inspection by the Greeks a few days earlier… yesterday while I was on board doing my “security boat-watch shift,” we were boarded by officials from the coast guard.

After much discussion between the officials and our captain…we realized it wasn’t about pieces of paper or inspections but was in fact a decision already made some days ago that no boat would be allowed to leave Greece with a destination of Gaza.  We quickly mobilized all our delegates to come to the boat with banners and flags, Banners were hung around the boat, we chanted:  FREE GAZA, FREE THE FLOTILLA.  Meantime a huge Coast Guard vessel passed in front the TAHRIR and clearly intended to block us if we tried to leave the port (as the U.S. boat had already done, though we didn’t realize it yet.)

The Opinionator blog wrote earlier today, in a post that otherwise tried to have it both ways and convinced few, about Greece’s decline from the heights of western civilization to its current low state:

Greece, the country that is ever revered as the cradle of democracy, philosophy and pretty much the entirety of Western civilization (no oxymoron jokes, please), is having a tough year. A recent economic near-collapse, European bailout, the difficult passage of a raft of unpopular austerity measures and, of course, angry demonstrations, protests and bloody riots in the streets have tested the country’s fortitude.

…Scott Sayare of The Times reported the latest on Friday, and quoted one activist, who described the situation this way: “It’s like they’ve moved the blockade from Gaza to Greece.”

I can’t help the feeling that Greece is so insolvent that Israel has agreed to pay for all the expenses of mounting this military operation to sink the Hope.  This has to be a new low in the foreign policy of a once proud, independent country.

The U.S. activists aboard the boat believe the government, which has no jurisdiction over the largely American passengers, will target the individual over whom they do have jurisdiction, the Greek captain.  The expectation is that the government will bring charges against him and so effectively torpedo the chances that the boat can sail.  It’s a nice piece of work on the government’s part.  They’ve collaborated with the Israeli and U.S. governments in frustrating the peace plans of the U.S. contingent and removed yet another possible thorn in the side of the Israelis, who will have one less boat to hijack in international waters when the time comes.

As the U.S. boat of course, it was likely to garner the most media attention and leverage the most pressure on the U.S. government.

I have a modest proposal that may shock the Greeks into recognizing that they are playing with fire.  There may be dock workers and port authorities in foreign countries who may not take kindly to Greece’s violation of maritime custom in this case.  They might want to consider treating Greek vessels in their own ports and waters with the same “courtesy” Greece is according the Tahrir and Audacity of Hope.  Two or three can play this game, Greece.

Joseph Dana has published his latest piece from aboard the Hope.  Here is Assaf Geffen’s piece in Ynetnews, Israel Lost Flotilla War:

It appears that the current flotilla was meant to present Israel’s stupidity.

…Instead of realizing that the best way to counter a public relations flotilla is to ignore it, Israel’s PR geniuses made sure to promote the event with spine-tingling leaks to the media about flotilla members being equipped with chemical weapons, laser guns and dragons.

The only optimistic aspect of this conduct is the hope that flotilla organizers would realize that they don’t really have to sail here and get seasick and all. Their objective – isolating Israel on the international stage and driving it mad – had already been secured.
