Bibi Set to Name Amidror National Security Advisor

Friday, March 4th, 2011
yaakov amidror

National security advisor candidate, Yaakov Amidror (Maya Levin/JINI

No sooner did the Bibi-Yvet show give us the public defenestration of Uzi Arad, whose appointment to be Israel’s next ambassador to Britain was confirmed and rejected all in leaked news stories within a single week, than Bibi has given us an even better show.  While Arad was the real thing, a genuine Mossad spy who’d run spies and been instrumental in the Rosen-Aipac spy episode, Amidror seems a parody of Dr. Strangelove; a Maj. Gen. who’s never had a field command, and who sees the troops as little more than ideological cannon fodder.

Peace Now’s Ori Nir calls him an “ultra-hawk” and “National-Religious icon.”  It’s hard to believe that anyone can be worse than Arad, but Amidror really and undoubtedly is:

Amidror…told a conference last year that soldiers should kill anyone who gets in the way of completing their mission – and that soldiers who refuse to attack should be shot, too.

“A soldier who won’t attack when they tell him ‘forward’ because he says, ‘Two soldiers to my right and two to my left have been killed, so I won’t move’ – any normal military system should put a bullet in his head, and a liberal system should put him in jail,” Amidror said, speaking at a conference organized by the Israel Democracy Institute on “National Values in the Israel Defense Forces.”

“The education we give soldiers is an education of risking or being willing to sacrifice one’s life … of knowing that some of the soldiers won’t return, but still, everyone goes. And anyone who doesn’t go should get a bullet in the head or be in jail.”

…When journalist Haim Yavin, a fellow panelist, noted the army’s orders during the first Lebanon war were to “fight carefully,” Amidror responded: “That’s a totally illegal order. What should be said is ‘kill more of the bastards on the other side, so that we’ll win.’ Period.”

He also criticized the IDF code of ethics drafted by Prof. Asa Kasher. “I said this should remain unwritten, so there wouldn’t be anything written, as [then] it would become technical,” Amidror said.

…Yesterday Amidror…told Haaretz that in some countries soldiers who won’t attack are executed…

This guy would’ve been right at home at the Wansee Conference.  You’ll recall that’s where the Nazis devised the Final Solution, while writing down almost none of their plans because they were wise enough to understand that if they did and anyone found out about it they’d be in mighty hot water.  To be clear, I’m not accusing Amidror of planning a genocide against anyone (expect perhaps Arabs or Palestinians if given half a chance).  But I’m noting an absolute similarity of thought and mindset.

As Bibi prepares for his ersatz peace offensive, let the world keep in mind that his incoming top security advisor said the following about the peace process:

Earlier this month, Amidror wrote that “negotiations with the Palestinians and even an agreement with the Palestinians (…) will not benefit Israel in any way…

Ori also notes the ultra-hawk’s “vicious attacks on the New Israel Fund.”  He has derided the Obama administration’s “naive” policies.  Politically, he was the public face of the far-right religious, Jewish Home party.  He’s not just a settler, but a supporter of the most radical and messianic among them.  He believes, in other words, that Israeli sovereignty over the entire greater Land of Israel will hasten the coming of the messiah.

Amidror espouses a stridently anti-Arab strategic doctrine which attributes annihilationist views to all Muslism and Arabs.  Further, his own views are completely out of touch with the developments of the Arab democratic revolutions sweeping the Middle East:

His approach to Israel’s national security attributes little value to political accords between Israel and its neighbors. In Amidror’s view, Israel’s chief national security asset in its relations with its neighbors is deterrence…Amidror wrote that…the Arab world “does not accept the very presence of a sovereign and independent Jewish state in the heart of the Middle East and will do its best to annihilate it.” Any other basic assumption, Amidror wrote, is “self deception.” Amidror repeated…that Israel’s goal should not be to change the minds and hearts of its Arab neighbors – such attempts would be in vain – but to deter them by force. “The processes taking place in the Middle East are leading it toward becoming more fundamentalist, less tolerant and less democratic.”

…[In his recent essay] The Chief Lesson – Security is Preferable to Peace…Amidror argues that because Israel lives “on the edge of a volcano,” it must always be ready for the worse. “The main lesson is that we must emphasize Israel’s security needs and its ability to defend itself over any other requirement, including the lofty dream to reach political agreements [with its neighbors].

This guy is a troglodyte.  A Curtis LeMay.  A Gen. Jack D. Ripper.  Is this what Israel and the Middle East needs right now?  An ideological flamethrower who wants to cast oil on the fire that is the Israeli-Arab conflict?

Clearly, it seems that Amidror’s appointment is meant to be red meat to those coalition partners farther to his right (yes, there are, I know it’s hard to believe).  Perhaps Bibi means for the arm-chair general to be little more than a figure-head with no influence over policy.  But the guy scares me and should scare anyone who has even a scintilla of faith that the conflict can and should be settled sometime by someone.

Lions, and Tigers, and Bi-National States–Oh My!

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Bibi Netanyahu is being shaken out of his lethargy by the imminent threat that the Quartet may announce its recognition of a Palestinian state within 1967 borders as early as next week.  To shock the other right-wingers in his coalition out of their stupor he’s raised the bi-national state bogeyman:

…Netanyahu is expected in the coming weeks to put forward a peace initiative in a bid to break through the deadlock in the peace process and extricate Israel from international isolation.

Netanyahu has warned in recent days during closed meetings that “a binational state would be disastrous for Israel,” and therefore it is necessary to undertake a political move that will remove this threat.

…“This trend will intensify and become stronger,” Netanyahu told his advisers. “However there are those in Israel who think that one state is a good idea. I think it is a disaster.”

I’m not sure how or why he equates a Quartet recognition of a Palestinian state with a bi-national state.  Perhaps he thinks that the words “bi” (as in bi-national) and “two” as in “two states” mean the same thing…Or maybe he just can’t count.

At any rate, if you’re like me I know you’ve been wowed by Bibi’s new “peace initiative” which would–are you sitting down–declare temporary borders for a Palestinian state that would include 65% of the West Bank!  Such a handsome, generous offer.  How could any self-respecting Palestinian turn it down?  Bibi reminds me a bit of the shopkeeper who sets a price for his merchandise with a customer, then when the customer hesitates he names a higher price and is shocked when the customer becomes angry.  65%?  What’s so bad about that?  It’s better than 0% isn’t it?

But the real laugher is this passage from the Haaretz story (whoever said Israeli leaders weren’t jokesters?):

Netanyahu would like to announce his peace plan in a speech in the coming weeks. One of the ideas being considered is that Netanyahu would speak before a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

Netanyahu is scheduled to travel to Washington for an AIPAC conference in May, but his advisers are trying to move the trip to an earlier date. Discussion of a speech before a joint session was central to the talks between the Prime Minister’s Office and the White House.

A well-positioned Israeli source said that at this stage U.S. President Barack Obama and his advisers are reluctant to run with the idea over fears it has the imprint of talks between Netanyahu’s advisers and Republic Congressmen. Moreover, the White House is not yet convinced that Netanyahu’s speech will have sufficient substance for it to constitute a political breakthrough.

“Not yet convinced?”  If there’s any chance that Obama could be convinced that this initiative has even a shred of substance, then he might just as well ask Bibi to piss on his back and call it rain.  It’s not so much that this cockamamie idea is a Republican contrivance, it’s that Bibi is attempting to use Obama and the U.S. Congress as a fig leaf to conceal his absolute inertness when it comes to negotiating seriously for a deal.  To the Obamaites I say, repeat after me: this plan is not a breakthrough, it’s a sham.  S-H-A-M.  It fools nobody.  If it fools you, then shame on you.

What they should do when Bibi talks about an interim deal based on temporary borders is hold up flash cards that spell out: 1-9-6-7.  That would be a suitable answer.  The Obamaites may not have a Middle East policy when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  But at least they’re not fools.  If they go for this, then they are.

Hasbaristas, Clickbombers and Other Fraudsters

Friday, March 4th, 2011

I like to be as transparent as I can in writing and running this site, which sometimes involves revealing things other bloggers in my position might not.  So this post is in that vein.  In some ways, this blog relies on the “kindness of strangers.”  I don’t personally know some of the people who pass on tips and scoops to me.  I have to rely on their past reputation if they’ve worked with me before; or the credibility of the information they’re offering if they haven’t.

For the past several months, a reader/commenter calling himself Dedi Rozenthal has posted comments regularly.  He’s riled me and other commenters up quite a bit with his right-wing comments.  But there was nothing remotely close to causing me to ban him.

However, a few weeks ago he began offering information about intelligence-related stories, which is a subject I’m very interested in.  I did some research and discovered that if this commenter is indeed Rozenthal, then he’s a retired colonel in the Israeli air force.  Frankly, I’ve never known of any colonel in the IDF offering intelligence information to a lefty blogger.  But at the start, the information, which related to corruption involving Gabi Ashkenazi, seemed quite plausible.  Since it didn’t reflect well on the IDF, I figured anyone offering the information to me within the IDF would have no reason to do so if it was false.

But then Dedi brought me a story claiming five Israeli Palestinians had been secretly detained and one of them, a minor, had died.  I reported this story too in the spirit of pikuach nefesh, because I thought lives might be in danger.  Afterward, it turned out that key details of the story couldn’t be authenticated.

Around that time, he brought me an even more ‘amazing’ story which claimed to expose the identity of the head of the Israeli intelligence unit which created Stuxnet.  There was a side story about the allegedly stunning 25 year-old woman, Noia Dar Artzi, who commanded the unit engaging in multiple affairs with subordinates, and the son of a friend who was drummed out of the unit for filing a sexual harassment complaint.  He worked up a whole life history for Dar Artzi that sounded impressive.  Though the idea of a woman of 25 commanding one of the IDF’s premier cyber-warfare units gave me pause.

Given the problems I discovered with the earlier story, I held off on publishing the Stuxnet story.  It just seemed too wild to believe given that his earlier information hadn’t panned out.  But I had to hand it to Dedi.  He knew how to spin a yarn.  And like all lovers of literature, I like a good story.

Then Dedi claimed he was coming to California and would bring with him a package containing incriminating e mails Ameer Makhoul had sent which proved he was a Hezbollah agent.  My Israeli friend even wrote me that he’d shipped off the package to me.  But I never received it and I told him so.

Then came the clincher.  Dedi started warning me about people hacking our e mails and wanted me to get a new e-mail address to write to him.  When I refused, he told me that when he’d returned to Israel someone (I think he was implying it was the American authorities or possibly Israeli) gave him the package back and told him never to do it again.

It was at that moment that Dedi lost all usefulness to whoever put him up to this charade (if anyone did).  Now, it’s possible that Dedi, or whoever he is, did this of his own initiative.  Or it’s possible he has an intelligence connection of some sort.  At any rate, his goal was clearly to discredit me and my work.  So the reason I write all this is to let you know that there may be times you get a story wrong or are fooled.  And if you do, it’s because you tried your hardest to vet it given the inherent limitations of writing a blog in the U.S. about Israeli intelligence matters.  And something got by you.

Dedi was pretty good, I’ve got to hand it to him.  Far more credible than other jokesters who in the past came to me claiming to know the date of the coming Israeli attack on Iran.  Dedi worked into his narrative death under torture, illicit sex, computer hacking and other skullduggery.  It was perfect for the age.  But ultimately he couldn’t carry it off.  Alas, poor Dedi, we thought we knew him well.

UPDATE:  There is evidence that the person/s behind this hoax is/are active in the threads of at least one other progressive blog, so I thought it worthwhile to expose the IP addresses, e mail addresses and other information about those who’ve proven to be frauds in connnection with this and earlier incidents at my blog.

‘IlanP’ used the e mail address [email protected] and IP 188.40.33.213

‘Arijay’ used the e mail address [email protected] and IP 38.108.124.153

This IP has also been used by the merry little band of hoaxsters:

193.202.110.204

He/they clearly have access to an an array of e mail addresses and IPs, so the above list is by no means exhaustive.  But if you have any commenters using these IPs be forewarned.

I also wanted to let my readers know that I’ve had a Google Adsense ad tower in this blog’s sidebar (it’s not the ad tower at the top of my sidebar, which is a separate entity) since it began in 2003.  No more.  Some malicious hasbarist has click bombed my ads and Adsense has punished me with banishment.  This will no doubt give the Rotterites or other juvenile delinquents who would engage in such fraud great pleasure.  Until they realize that the small amount of income I was earning from Google Adsense will be more than offset by my readers replacing it with direct donations.  So please, show the bastards that they don’t own the web and don’t get to damage my reputation without paying a price.  I’d love to collect from you ten times what I’m losing from Adsense ad revenue.  To participate, go to the Paypal button and give as generously as you can.

Mossad Kidnaps Gazan Engineer in Ukraine, Now Held Incommunicado in Israeli Prison

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011
abu seesi

Abu Seesi, kidnapped Gaza engineer, with three of his six children

A Ukrainian news source reported in late February that the Mossad kidnapped the chief engineer of Gaza’s only power plant in Ukraine:

The wife of a Palestinian engineer has accused the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad of abducting her husband. Derar Abu Sisi went missing five days ago while visiting his Ukrainian wife in her home country.

The Ukraine-based Al Raed Press said that Mr. Abu Sisi is the head of operations at the only power station in the Gaza Strip and was on a visit to Ukraine when he disappeared during a train journey on 18 February. Mrs. Abu Sisi accused Mossad of kidnapping her husband…She stressed that her husband is a governmental employee in Gaza but is not involved in any political activities and is not a member of any political party or movement.

“My husband didn’t have any enmity against any person or entity in Palestine or Ukraine, and he is not a prominent business owner or rich enough to be kidnapped by a gang,” she added.

…Railway staff on duty on the night of the disappearance had claimed in an early statement that two people in plain clothes boarded the train at a station and kidnapped the Palestinian engineer after they showed him identity cards claiming that they were security personnel. The railway employees then changed their statements, claiming that everything was fine and that no one was kidnapped from the train. The media reports claim that the officials changed their story under pressure from the Ukrainian police.

According to Irenynko Mykola, a lawyer and president of a Ukraine human rights organization, there are no mutual cooperation agreements between Ukraine’s intelligence service and the Mossad. If it is proven that the Israeli agency did carry out the kidnap it will raise many questions about Mossad activity in the former soviet republic.

Now an Israeli source confirms that Dirar Abu Seesi (note correct spelling) is being held incommunicado in an Israeli prison where he’s being interrogated.

My source does not yet tell me what he’s charged with, but one can presume if a detainee is being interrogated it’s on an intelligence-security related issue.  Usually when they arrest a Palestinian outside Israel or who’s recently been outside Israel they accuse him of contact with a forbidden organization (which usually means Hezbollah or Hamas).  It’s possible they’ve cooked up such charges in this case.

But Abu Seesi may be a different case.  As the chief engineer of Gaza’s power plant he may know a good deal of technical information Israel would like to have about the plant, how it operates, how it can be shut down.  In fact, given the success of Stuxnet in penetrating Iran’s nuclear facilities, Israel would have a definite interest in being able to penetrate the Gaza plant with a remote program and shut it down during hostilities without having to destroy it as it did during Operation Cast Lead.

Or they may be concocting a story by which he’s engaged in some terror plot which would exploit his skills as a civil engineer.

If these reports are true, then the Mossad is continuing its violation of the sovereignty of other nations and kidnapping foreign nationals on foreign soil.  This is a massive violation not only of Ukrainian sovereignty, but of international law for which Israel and the Mossad should be held accountable.  It also shows since the al-Mabouh disaster Mossad has learned nothing and changed nothing.  It operates with impunity and flagrantly disregards the norms of civilized discourse.  Once again showing why Israel has placed itself squarely outside the realm of western democratic nations.

Israeli intelligence services must account for Abu Seesi’s whereabouts and provide information about the charges against him.  He must be allowed to consult with an attorney.  He must not be tortured or abused (though that no doubt has already happened).  This man is a professional, a civil engineer, not a terrorist.

Senior Israeli Diplomat Quits in Disgust, Can No Longer Support Government Policies

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011
ilan baruch

Ilan Baruch, veteran Israeli diplomat, could no longer defend the indefensible (Guy Raivitz)

An Israeli diplomat with over 30 years of foreign service experience has quit his job in disgust, saying he can no longer defend or interpret to a foreign audience the policies of his government under the leadership of Bibi Netanyahu or Avigdor Lieberman.  Ilan Baruch, a decorated IDF veteran, served in numerous major diplomatic postings including stints as ambassador to South Africa and the Philipines.  Several months ago, after one too many stiff diplomatic cables from Lieberman chiding his colleagues for braying insufficiently loudly on behalf of Israel, Baruch decided he’d had enough.  He put in his papers and retired though he was not scheduled to do so for several more years.

He wrote a letter to his colleagues in which he noted a few of reasons for ending his career prematurely:

“Over the past two years the political and diplomatic messages by the state’s leaders, which have grown more pointed, have infuriated me and given me no rest. I find it difficult to represent them and explain them honestly.”

…Baruch said there is a great deal of frustration brimming below the surface at the Foreign Ministry.

The veteran diplomat explained the genesis of his discontent:

…He sensed an initial warning sign, he added, the day Lieberman took office as foreign minister and gave a speech in which he rejected the possibility of peace with the Palestinians.

“Lieberman completely denied [Israel's] role in the failure of the peace process,” Baruch said. “The outcome is not good and it is not only because of the Palestinians’ conduct.”

Baruch is not alone is his “disgust” at the course Israel’s diplomatic efforts are taking:

“It has become impossible to explain Israel to others these days,” one ambassador said. “There is no clear policy and it is very difficult to respond to international criticism.”Another ambassador said: “The diplomatic impasse is dangerous to the State of Israel, and it doesn’t seem as if the prime minister has a solution in the form of a diplomatic initiative. Under such circumstances, the international community will simply force a solution on us.”

It is always tempting in circumstances like this to read too much into the courageous act of one individual.  One wants to see a groundswell of opposition and hopes that this is but the beginning.  But the truth is that Israel’s Occupation regime is entrenched.  There are many others in the system waiting for their chance to replace someone of Baruch’s high rank.  His leaving may only be a blip on the screen.

Nevertheless, it is a cri de coeur that some will hear and heed both within the foreign ministry and perhaps outside it.

Top Israeli Academics Censure Bar Ilan for Firing Professor Over Political Beliefs

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

70 senior Israeli academic signed a letter to the Council for Higher Education denouncing Bar Ilan University for using political considerations in its hiring and firing decisions.  Dr. Ariella Azoulay, an international authority on photography and visual culture, was denied tenure after teaching there since 1999.  Her appeal too was denied, which motivated the professors to protest that her firing was motivated by political persecution.

The University responded that its decision was solely based on academic considerations without detailing what they were.  Critics give the lie to this claim, noting that Azoulay has published ten books, even more articles in scholarly journals, and is a highly sought after speaker at academic conferences in her field in the U.S. and Europe.  She has also mentored scores of students and guided them in their careers in this and related fields.  In short, she’s a model scholar.  One almost any other university would be proud to have on its faculty.

She does have one severe blemish: she is a stout opponent of Israeli government policies.  Apparently, it makes some higher-ups at Bar Ilan uncomfortable to have to rub shoulders with such a dissident for the next few decades.  They’d rather share meals at the faculty club with like-minded souls than with anyone who might challenge too strongly their cherished illusions.

One of Israel’s most distinguished scholars, Prof. Yaron Ezrahi, criticized Bar Ilan:

Prof. Ezrachi of Hebrew University’s political science department said “Bar-Ilan has learned to conceal political considerations, disguising them as academic processes. We fear the precedent of firing lecturers for radical political views of any kind, despite their international academic excellence. This could contaminate the entire higher education system in Israel.”

Another major important consideration to which the University seems oblivious is its academic reputation.  It seems far more interested in having a homogenous faculty which adheres to an imaginary political consensus than having a diverse, free-wheeling academic environment that is open to discourse and the free exchange of ideas.

Not reported in any Israeli news story about this is an alarming incident conveyed to me by an Israeli source that Navi Pillay, UN High Comissioner for Human Rights, was scheduled to address Bar Ilan’s law faculty during a recent visit to Israel. When the Forum for Eretz Yisrael, a far-right settler advocacy group, got wind of the speech it protested at the highest levels of the University and threatened a letter-writing campaign to wealthy donors which would harm the school’s fundraising prospects. The invitation was rescinded and Pillay never appeared.

Does this sound like a University that is playing in the big leagues or the bush leagues? Where major leaguers play, academics aren’t afraid of controversy, nor of rocking the boat. Controversial ideas don’t spook intellectuals who are secure in their faith in their own ability to think for themselves without having a censor to think for them. Apparently, that’s not how it works at Bar Ilan.

I also note that Prof. Menachem Klein was recently denied promotion to professor in the political science department at Bar Ilan.  Unlike Azoulay, who did not have tenure, Klein cannot be fired because he does.  The decision in Klein’s case also was political in nature since he too has numerous outstanding books, monographs and articles to his credit in his field, which is the study of Palestinian nationalism.  In fact, he has a new book out in English which I’ll feature here.  But Klein too is a harsh critic of Israeli policies and as such persona non grata in certain university circles.

David Yerushalmi, Islam-Hating White Supremacist Inspires Anti-Sharia Bills Sweeping Tea Party Nation

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

david yerushalmi

David Yerushalmi

You’ve gotta hand it to David Yerushalmi.  Until now, I can’t recall a Jew who’s ever been called a white supremacist before (actually now that I think of it, I called him a Jewish white supremacist way back in 2007).  Thanks to him, we now can.  They said that one of the virtues of Zionism was that now Israel could have Jewish criminals.  I guess the same holds true for Jewish racists.  Thanks to Dovid Yerushalmi Jews are really breaking new ground.

I’m referring to an eye-opening expose in Mother Jones about the inspiration the Jewish extremist is offering for the anti-Muslim legal initiatives that are sweeping the south after the victory of one such campaign in Oklahoma a few months ago.  Now Tennessee stands ready to draw the line at Muslim infidels thrusting their scimitars into the private parts of Christian maidens.  The legislature there is considering a bill which would ban the use of foreign legal systems like Sharia in the adjudication of any legal matters within the state.  So far, I haven’t seen any Tennesseans clamoring to apply Sharia to the laws governing horse-racing at Churchill Downs.  But that doesn’t deter Yerushalmi, who has projects like this cooking in several other southern Tea Party strongholds.

One of the most delicious phrases used to describe the Jewish anti-jihadi is “white supremacist,” to which I say: if the shoe fits…I’ve also called him a Jewish fascist.  But white supremacist will do just as well.

As Murphy notes, this is a guy who endorses the principle that “Caucasians” are superior to blacks and that Jewish liberals are a cancer in the U.S. body politic.  The nearest Jewish “intellectual” antecedent I can determine would be Meir Kahane.  But Yerushalmi’s views are far more radical than Kahane’s.  The only difference is that Kahane embraced violence as a tool in his campaign against Arabs and anti-Semites.  The latter-day Jewish Islamophobe, an attorney, is far too slick for that.  He merely suggests that all non-citizen Muslims in the country be deported and many of the rest thrown in concentration camps.  In Yerushalmi-world, any Muslim who espoused Sharia would earn him or herself a 20 year stay in the federal pen.  Why would you need violence when you can throw the entire weight of the federal government into criminalizing merely being a Muslim?

I wouldn’t at all be surprised if Yerushalmi, a fedora-totin’, tzitis-wearing ultra-Orthodox Jew, was an avid supporter of the settler movement, the Israeli equivalent of the Tea Party with Uzis.

David Yerushalmi is the nasty, sleazy side of the more refined Muslim-bashing proposed by Rep. Peter King, who plans on quizzing Muslim-Americans about their nasty un-American habits in Congressional hearings soon.  The former is Roy Cohn, to King’s Joe McCarthy.  Can you imagine white Christian Congress members summoning American Jews to defend their Americanism in public hearings?  It’s preposterous, nauseating.

And just think, if Mike Huckabee gets the Republican nomination, we’ll have a settler-loving presidential candidate espousing such a foul, racist agenda.

After Mossad Cloned British Passports to Kill al-Mabouh, Promised Never to Do It Again, IDF General Does

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011
avi benayahu

Brig. Gen. Avi Benayahu used false identity to enter Britain after Mossad promised not to engage in similar behavior

In its assassination conspiracy against Mahmoud al-Mabouh, the Mossad cloned the legitimate passports of numerous Israeli dual-nationality citizens, among them several from Britain.  As a result, Mossad station chiefs were ejected from several major western capitals.  For the second time in the past twenty years or so (yes, it had done this earlier) Mossad promised the Brits that it wouldn’t abuse its sovereignty in the future.

Now Defense News brings word that an Israeli general has done almost precisely that, only a few months after the promise was made to Britain.  The IDF’s chief spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Avi Benayahu traveled to  England a few weeks ago in secret.  He used a false name and (apparently) false papers to do so:

Q. EVEN IN FRIENDLY COUNTRIES LIKE BRITAIN, WHERE SOLDIERS ARE FIGHTING TERROR AT HOME AND ABROAD, YOU AND OTHER IDF OFFICERS ARE THREATENED WITH MASS PROTESTS AND EVEN ARREST WARRANTS. WHY?

A. It’s true. In my last visit to London, I had to assume a false name because well-funded anti-Israel activists are exploiting universal jurisdiction powers to wage lawfare against us.

I’d like some of my British readers to query Whitehall about whether its customary for generals of foreign militaries to use fake IDs to enter their country.  Or did British authorities participate in this fiction?  I know if I were a foreign minister I wouldn’t take too kindly to such shenanigans especially given Israel’s predilection for engaging in such fraud on a regular basis.

Benayahu is trying to wriggle out of his predicament by claiming that his security detail directed him to engage in such fraud.  Further, in defending his behavior he attacked European nations like Britain which allow the issuance of warrants for the arrest of Israeli leaders on charges of war crimes.  He made this espeically inflammatory statement in a Yediot Achronot interview:

It’s absurd.  Britain and other European countries are no less concerned about terror than we.  Their leaders understand that he who feeds the radical Islamist snake will get bitten by it.

I’m wondering what an Islamic snake looks like and what it has to do with anything.  And why is issuing an arrest warrant against an Israeli general or defense minister “feeding the Islamist serpent?”  Israel’s problems are not with radical Islamists, but with Palestinian nationalists.  Despite all its attempts to raise the specter of Al Qaeda in Gaza, Israel would be hard-pressed to argue that it invaded Lebanon or Gaza in order to prevent Al Qaeda from taking over Palestine or Lebanon.  Besides, this is just a rhetorical smokescreen to divert attention from Benayahu’s own act of duplicity.

Frankly, I don’t care what his reason for such behavior is.  Other Israeli leaders have refused to travel to Britain for fear of arrest, why does Benayahu earn a right they don’t, to do so using a fraudulent passport and identity?

The interview also reveals other views toward the social networking revolution that are diametrically opposed to the prevailing wisdom.  Benayahu frets that social media pose threats to “operational security” in urban areas (like Gaza), presumably because Palestinian victims can report on the location of Israeli forces.  Perhaps this is why Gazans using cell phones were murdered during Cast Lead.

If you listen to this passage without know who said it, you might think it was Hosni Mubarahk or Muammar Qaddafi speaking:

Even more disturbing is the fact that anyone with a 3.5-generation camera and Internet access can outreach mainstream media to disseminate lies, distortions and calls for unlawful action. It’s ironic that technology developed in the West can be co-opted to serve the interests of decidedly anti-Western, anti-democratic forces.

What he means to say is that Palestinians (a number of whom were provided video cameras by B’Tselem to record IDF abuse) may use digital media to expose the crimes and injustices of Israel.  Can anyone think of a single instance in which cameras or internet access was used during the Arab democratic revolts of the past month to “serve the interests of anti-western, anti-democratic forces??”

The interview is really a flackery masterpiece of its kind.  The interviewer asks him generally probing questions and he replies without addressing the questions at all.  Instead, he makes whatever point he wishes even if it has little or nothing to do with what he’s been asked.  I recently wrote a post about Benayahu in which I expressed strong negative views about him.  This was before I’d read a full interview with him.  Now I find myself even more disgusted.  One of my Israeli readers who is a retired IDF officer told me he knew Benayahu and that if I did I’d like him.  Not on your life.  In fact, the thought crossed my mind, given Benayahu’s announced plans to employ IDF internet geeks to expound pro-Israel hasbara online, thay my interlocutor might be Benayahu himself.  But I’m afraid that the honorary general (whose rank was as well earned as “Colonel” Sanders), has bigger media fish to fry than me.

Many in the English-speaking world think Mark Regev is the most mendacious, oily IDF press representative.  That’s because they haven’t read enough of Benayahu.  He even has the chutzpah to tell the reporter interviewing him that as long as he’s “wearing the uniform” he’ll never express a political opinion!
