Dirar Abu Seesi: Breaking the Israeli Gag

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Looks like we’re in the infant stages of breaking the Israeli gag on reporting the kidnapping, extraordinary rendition, & imprisonment of Dirar Abu Seesi, first in a Shabak torture facililty and now in Shikma Prison.  Rechavia Berman has published the news at his blog. So far it has not been taken down.  But Haggai Mattar reported the story in MySay (motto: “a free press in Israel,” turns out not so free).  That story was taken down.

I’m trying to interview Abu Seesi’s wife, Veronika in Ukraine, but she doesn’t speak English and I’m trying to surmount the language barrier by finding someone in her family who can translate for me.  Interviewing his sister in Gaza is also impossible as they don’t speak English either.

Abu Seesi’s family in Ukraine tells me AP may be publishing a story soon, which would go a long way toward pressuring the secret police to remove the gag.  I’ve approached a number of media outlets, among them the Daily Beast and London Review of Books,  which have expressed no interest in the story, which simply astonishes me.  But there is yet hope as I’m about to send a draft to a Jewish publication which may publish.

What I simply don’t understand is that Israel has violated mutiple international laws and UN convenants in performing this extraordinary rendition and yet very few seem interested.  Where’s the outrage, everyone?  Won’t someone beside me (and the two journalists I mention above) stand up for a Gaza civil engineer with six children now held secretly in the Israeli Gulag?  Break the gag now.

Peter King’s Anti-Muslim Jihad

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

peter king anti muslim hearingsTomorrow, Rep. Peter King, one of the most prominent anti-Muslim members of Congress (who wrote a suspense novel about a Congressman who foils an Al Qaeda plot), plans to hold the first of several hearings on the supposed menace posed by the radicalization of American Muslims.

As one who has studied the anti-Muslim movement over the course of the past few years, King’s rhetoric and tone in explaining the rationale for the hearings came right out of the playbook of Steve Emerson, Daniel Pipes, Pam Geller, David Yerushalmi, Robert Spencer and the like.  Among the politician’s wild claims is one that “85%” of American mosques are controlled by “radical imams” and that Muslims are “an enemy living amongst us.

Returning to the anti-jihad mafia, King consulted closely with a number of them including Emerson.  At their suggestion, he originally had planned to call Aayan Hirsi Ali, a radical anti-Muslim who has made a good living out of publishing books and telling paying audiences of the evils of Islam.  She is a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.  Another dropped witness was Walid Phares, a Lebanese Maronite Christian, darling of the anti-jihadi set, star of the lurid Clarion anti-jihadi films, Third Jihad and Iranium, and former Washington DC representative of the Lebanese Phalange, which brought the world among other things, Sabra and Shatilla.  The radical right was also under the impression King would call Emerson and Spencer to testify.  But he caved on this as well.

This happened in the face of extraordinary pressure from Pres. Obama and others defending the honor and decency of American Muslims, causing him to tone down his witness list and his rhetoric.

Fear of immigrants and 'alien' religions (like Judaism, as in this cartoon) runs historically deep in America

Despite this, elements of King’s harsh anti-Muslim viewpoint remain in the form of a few of the guests.  The most noted one being Zuhdi Jasser, a right-wing Republican neocon who is the favorite “good Muslim” trotted out by people like Emerson.  Glenn Beck has called him the “Muslim that we were all searching for after 9-11″ and “a voice I trust.”  Considering how much Beck hates Muslims, that should tell you a good deal about Jasser’s views of his co-religionists.  I’ve profiled Jasser several times in this blog.  I even earned a polite request from his lawyer to edit a post I wrote about him (which I naturally refused to do).  Media Matters has also profiled him.  Unlike Christian Arab Muslim haters like Phares and Brigitte Gabriel, Jasser is Muslim, though a harsh critic of just about everything in American Islam.  He’s such a favorite that he’s been the star of not one, but two Clarion Fund films which posit a conspiracy by this country’s Muslims to topple the government and Constitution and replace it with Sharia law.  Clarion, you’ll recall, is the producer of a total of three films which take aim at various alleged Islamic conspiracies against western values, the latest one being Iranium, which advocates a military strike against Iran.  Clarion is an arm of the pro-settler group, Aish HaTorah.

The N.Y. Times has exposed Rep. King’s own ties to terrorism in his avid fundraising on behalf of the Irish Republican Army, when it was designated a terror group by the U.S. government.  The fundraising done in this country for the IRA was largely used to purchase and devise bombs and other weapons used in the IRA struggle against British rule in Northern Ireland.  In fact, he defended the IRA’s deadly attacks on civilians:

“If civilians are killed in an attack on a military installation, it is certainly regrettable, but I will not morally blame the I.R.A. for it.”

King even complained that the Secret Service was investigating him for his close ties to Irish terror operatives.

King’s rather unconvincing defense of his actions notes that the IRA didn’t attack Americans (with the implication being that American Muslims would).  It seems to me that while the IRA may’ve been different from Al Qaeda and other radical Islamist groups in some respects, they both kill/ed civilians and a lot of them.  The fact that the IRA killed British civilians or Irish Protestants and Al Qaeda killed Americans seems meaningless sophistry.

The tone of these hearings invokes a similar hysteria of an earlier era, that of the House Committee on Un-American Affairs (HUAC), which rooted out so-called Reds and radicals from positions of influence in American society.  This is an era of the Communist witch-hunt which most Americans today deplore as a badge of shame for this country.  It seems to me that without strenuous objection to King’s hearings, he may take us down a similar road.  The pols who sat on HUAC too were looking to burnish their careers and score quick, easy political points with their constituents.  Like them, Peter King is looking to make a name for himself as a terrorist hunter.

But, just as HUAC was long on outrageous claims and short on results, so King is doing a deep disservice to the vast majority of American Muslims who live lives like ours, share values like ours, and seek the same goals for themselves and their families.  Demonizing Muslims is a cheap shot, a political trick.  It’s easy to score points on a relatively small, politically vulnerable minority.  American politics has a long history of xenophobia regarding the most recent wave of immigrants.  In the 19th century it was Know Nothings raving about the Irish Catholic Papist.  In the 20th, it was the KKK campaigning against Blacks and Jews.  In the 21st century, Muslims become the immigrants du jour of the Know Nothing American right (better known as the Tea Party).

If Peter King and his committee were serious about this subject, they would explore ALL of American Muslim life, not just alleged proclivity toward terrorism.  That would be a set of hearings that would teach Americans much more comprehensively about their fellow citizens.  Or alternatively, King could study radicalization of many different groups within American society, of which Muslims might be one.

King specifically rejected the latter approach in a statement that betrays his racism:

If we included these other violent events in the hearings, we’d be sending the false signal that we think there’s a security threat equivalency between Al Qaeda and the neo-Nazi movement, or Al Qaeda and gun groups. There is none.”

Mr. King added, “I’m not going to dilute the hearings by including other extremists.”

In the minds of the radical right figures I mentioned above, of course it would dilute the hearings to include other dangerous Americans prone to terrorism, because in their view Muslims are the most prone to violence.  Which of course is an odious lie.

Dirar Abu Seesi Kidnapped by Mossad, Now in Israeli Prison, Censor Gagged Reporting Story

Dirar Abu Seesi, kidnapped Gaza engineer

I have just confirmed through the Israeli NGO, HaMoked, that the story of Dirar Abu Seesi, who appears to have been kidnapped by the Mossad and transferred to Israel (though the NGOs have not confirmed this particular part of the story), is under a military censor’s gag order.  I’ve just spoken to his attorney, Michal Rochabi-Dansiger, a government appointed public defender, and she is not allowed to breath a word of his story or detention.  I am still trying to contact his sister, but it is late Israel/Gaza time so I haven’t been able to speak to her.

Thanks to reader John Dickerson, who notes that Israel, in kidnapping him, has violated at least one major UN human rights convention (and probably many other sections of international law), the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.  The document has been signed by 110 countries with several notable exceptions including Israel and the U.S.

At least now I know why the story has been met with a resounding silence by the Israeli media.  But I still don’t understand why foreign reporters based there with whom I’ve shared the story have not been willing to publish.

I’m also still waiting to hear an explanation from Ukrainian authorities about how Israeli intelligence agents were able to kidnap a foreign citizen on their state transport system and spirit him out of the country right under the noses of Ukrainian authorities.  It would be an embarrassment to any other nation.  I wonder what the Ukrainians have to say.  So far, they’ve been mum.

As I wrote yesterday, Abu Seesi is now in Shikma Prison outside Ashkelon after being transferred from the Shabak torture (er, detention) center in Petah Tikva.

Abu Seesi has six children who haven’t seen their father since February 18th, and until today didn’t know where he was.  They still don’t know when they’ll ever see him again.

Abu Seesi Kidnapped by Mossad and Now in Israel’s Shikma Prison

Dirar Abu Seesi with three of his six children

B’Tselem and HaMoked have helped me track down Dirar Abu Seesi, after his kidnapping by the Mossad in Ukraine on February 18th. I reported earlier this month that he was in an Israeli prison. Now my NGO friends have tracked him down to Shikma Prison, near Ashkelon, where he is being held. Initially, he was held in the Shabak detention center Petah Tikvah, which would mean the Mossad handed him off to the Shabak once he landed on Israeli territory.  Petah Tikvah is where they do the really bad stuff to you if you’re a Palestinian security detainee.

Now that he’s in Shikma, he has a public defender as his attorney.

I believe if there ever was a gag on this story it has probably been lifted.  Otherwise, the NGOs wouldn’t have been able to access the information above.

Israel must be made to explain how a resident of Gaza can be kidnapped by the Mossad in a sovereign country and then smuggled back to Israel and imprisoned there.  I can’t imagine how many violations of international law this entails, but it’s got to be a lot.  What possible justification can Israel offer that would explain kidnapping him in a foreign country?  After Israel kidnapped the Iranian Revolutionary Guard general Ali Asgari in Istanbul in 2006, violated the sovereignty of Dubai to assassinate Mahmud al-Mabouh last year, and murdered several Iranian nuclear engineers over the past few years, it again thumbs its nose at the notion of national sovereignty.

Further, it’s shameful that Ukraine appears to have had some level of complicity in this.  Otherwise, why would its police have denied the story that two individuals claiming to be security officials removed Abu Seesi from a train the night he was kidnapped?

We still do not know with what the Gaza civil engineer is charged.

By the way, just in case any Israelis wish to disparage the country’s human rights NGOs, this is an example of precisely why they’re crucial to Israeli “democracy” such as it is.  Without them, Abu Seesi might just as well have disappeared into the maw of the secret police.

Now will some Israeli publication finally pick up this story and report it for God’s sake!!

For any Russian speakers, here is a new Russian-language blog called: Where’s Dirar?

Israeli Black Shirts (aka Border Police) Provoke Sheikh Jarrah Violence

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Above you’ll find 9 minutes of riveting video of the fisticuffs and mauling used by Israel’s Black Shirt Border Police to “quell” a noisy, but entirely peaceful protest by Sheik Jarrah’s Solidarity activists.

This past Friday’s Sheikh Jarrah solidarity demonstration against the dispossession of East Jerusalem Palestinians from their homes provoked a round of extreme violence from Israel’s Black Shirt police force.  They trampled old men to the ground, all while masked with balaclavas intended to shield them from being identified and to intimidate the demonstrators.  Some officers were mounted on horses though all protestors were completely non-violent and posed no threat to anyone.

This is the face of Israel’s national security state.  A “democracy” afraid of its own shadow.

Compare the images of the activists–youthful, open, hopeful, brash and even eccentric, with those of the police–hooded, mounted, watchful, bored.  They tell the whole story.  They show us that there are two choices for Israel: the Sheikh Jarrah protestors or the Black Shirts.

There are 124 marvelous images at the Amir Bitan’s Facebook photo gallery page.  I read two telling comments here about an image of the masked Black Shirt whose eyes were the only part of his body visible to the camera.  One was: “the eyes are the mirror to the soul.”  The other: “when the gaze is vacant–what does this tell you about the soul?”

Protesting Israeli Diplomat Joins Sheikh Jarrah Demonstration

Among those joining last Friday’s weekly Sheikh Jarrah demonstration was recently retired Israeli senior diplomat Ilan Baruch.  This offers the government a double whammy.  First Baruch resigns in protest over the government’s charade of a peace plan which “disgusted” him and drove him into retirement.  Then within days he attends the Sheikh Jarrah protest, one of the most visible and vociferous public protests against the government’s land grab policies in East Jerusalem.

Haaretz reports that this week’s demonstration was especially violent and pitted the Solidarity activists and Palestinians against security forces and right-wing goons itching for a fight.

Yediot Finally Publishes Story of Kidnapping of Gaza Engineer

Sunday, March 6th, 2011
abu seesi story

Yediot's headline: 'Claim: Mossad Kidnapped Palestinian Engineer'

It’s only taken three weeks, but finally today an Israeli publication has written about the kidnapping of Gaza’s chief power plant engineer by the Mossad in the Ukraine (which happened on February 18th).  Unfortunately, the reporter only repeated the story already published in Ukrainian media about the kidnapping.  He didn’t include the new development reported by my Israeli source that Dirar Abu Seesi is now in an Israeli prison.  No one has reported this despite the fact that I’ve informed a score of Israeli journalists about it.

UPDATE: An Israeli Russian language online news portal just reported my contribution to this story.  The story is slowly making its way out there.

The Jerusalem Media and Communications Centre (affiliated with the Israeli online think tank Bitterlemons) has reported my story and quoted extensively from it.  It’s only a matter of time before those sleeping giants of the Israeli press get on it.  After they get permission from the censor of course.

I posted my story at Rotter a few days ago and those intrepid souls who love a good news scoop promptly took it down.  When an Israeli friend posted it again they took that thread down as well.  The Israeli intelligence community definitely doesn’t want anyone knowing it has Abu Seesi.  Probably trying to get everything it can out of him before his fate is known and pressure starts being brought to bear to provide him with all the niceties typically offered to prisoners in western democratic systems like a lawyer and access to family, all of which are being denied him.

Pam Geller Named to Southern Poverty Law Center Hate Hall of Fame

Saturday, March 5th, 2011
pam geller

Pam Geller huffs and puffs on FoxNews

The Southern Poverty Law Center comes a bit late to the game in understanding the power and danger of anti-Muslim hate.  But they’ve made great strides by naming Pam Geller’s Stop the Islamization of America as an official hate group, alongside such wonderful representatives of the species as the Westboro Baptist Church, the Aryan Nation, KKK, and the Nation of Islam.  It’s about time Pam was recognized for her important contribution to the genre of hate.

She responded by publishing Morris Dees divorce papers, as if that was supposed to somehow defame SPLC.  Such lunacy on her part is rich when you consider that she and her husband operated a car dealership with alleged ties to the mob and an especially gruesome murder.  She also exhibited her typical histrionic bellowing observed whenever her ox is gored:

“It’s outrageous that the SPLC designates a group dedicated to protecting the freedom of speech, the freedom of conscience, and legal equality for all Americans as a ‘hate group,’” she said. “The SPLC, instead of standing for those freedoms, is carrying water for the real haters, the real neo-Nazi Jew-haters: the forces of Islamic supremacism and jihad. The SPLC doesn’t even have a category for Islamic jihadi groups. The greatest threat facing our nation, our people, our world, and they are shilling for them.”

…The SPLC is just a cash cow for the clueless and/or complicit tools of Islamic supremacism on the Left. The SPLC is reviled in civil rights circles for its notorious reputation. It does little to no work, while its officials enriching themselves by raising huge amounts from unsuspecting donors.”

I hate to spoil the party Pammy, but precisely which “civil rights circles” revile SPLC for its “notorious reputation?”  She of course means her own organization which she (seriously, now) views as a “civil rights” organization.  Why sure, she’s for the civil rights of everyone who isn’t Muslim.  I wonder if she’s opposed to allowing Muslims to be American citizens.  You see it creates a rather inconvenient problem because once they’re citizens they’re entitled to the rights we white people (and even Black people, heaven forfend) enjoy.

Her talk about SPLC being a cash cow for its officials is also rich when you consider the tony digs Pammy enjoys on New York’s Upper Eastside in her multi-million dollar condo, thanks to the support of her “clueless complicit tools of anti-Muslim hate on the right” whose largess offers her the lifestyle to which she’s become accustomed and entitled.  Not to mention her husband–who conveniently passed away just as she began her anti-Muslim jihad–willing her the gains, gotten and ill, of their Long Island car dealership.

I’m also delighted to see the Jewish Task Force on the list, which is a JDL-spinoff run by Chaim Ben Pesach, aka Victor Vancier.  The latter served time in federal prison for engaging in acts of terror while he was in the JDL.  Many believe that Vancier is the owner of the Masada2000 hate site.

SPLC, by rights, should add other American Jewish extremist settler support groups like Hebron Fund and Central Fund of Israel to its list since they echo Geller’s anti-Muslim ideology.  Several years ago, I called and spoke to Mark Potok about this, but I don’t think he felt the urgency that I did.
