Rabbi Rotter’s False Claims

Monday, January 17th, 2011

rotter warning

Rabbi Rotter's warning of alleged fake Facebook profile created in the name of 'Kafe'

Within the past hour, Channel 10 Israel news aired a segment (see YouTube Hebrew video above) on our expose of Jerusalem police officer Meir Rotter’s incitement to violence against the non-violent demonstrators at Sheikh Jarrah.  In the segment, the reporter called this blog the “Wikileaks of Israel,” to which I can only reply that I’m proud to be.

Rabbi Yeshayahu Rotter is disseminating several false claims in order to protect his son, Meir, who I proved yesterday is the Rotter.net member, Kafe.  The latter posted at Rotter.net raged-filled rants against the protesters, Israeli government and media and leftists of all stripes.

First, Rotter.net posted a fictitious claim that someone had created a Facebook account for a “Kafe” who purported to be a moderator of Rotter.net.  Second, Rabbi Rotter posted a further distortion when he claimed that my goal was not to harm Meir, but him.  In reply, I should point out that my intent was to harm no one, but rather to expose dangerous violent views expressed by an Israeli policemen about citizens he was supposed to be protecting instead of assaulting.  And my goal is certainly not to harm Rabbi Rotter unless he decides to join his son in the police force and attack unarmed demonstrators.  Besides, I post at Rotter.net myself.  Why would I want to harm the forum or its owner?

In the thread they also complain that their privacy has been violated a charge that is ridiculous since Rotter, as a visible, aggressive police officer has become a public figure.  Furthermore, his public posts have made him even more so.  If I really wanted to violate their privacy I could do so much more than I have already.  I know their Israeli ID numbers, home addresses, birth dates, spouses’ names, etc.  But my goal isn’t to expose such private information.  My goal is make Meir Rotter and the Israeli police aware that there are civilized norms that the former has violated and that he will be held accountable.

Isn’t this the way of the violent Israeli settler right, though?  They commit or incite acts of violence against their Arab or Jewish enemies and then when they’re called on it they whine about how THEY are the victims of blood libels.  Remember the aftermath of the Rabin assassination when Israel looked in horror at the hatred spewed against their prime minister even before the killing?  What did the far right say then?  ”Boo-hoo, blood libel, you big bad meanies.  We’re the victims, not you.  Not Rabin.  He only lost his life. You’re destroying our reputation.”

Compare this to what Kafe and Rabbi Rotter write in the thread I linked to above.  It’s beyond pathetic.  Someone should tell them that when you vent hate you shouldn’t back away from it.  You should accept it.  Don’t collapse in self-pity.  That’s a trick designed to divert attention and throw the blame back on the real victims, in this case the Sheikh Jarrah protesters who Meir Rotter assaults with regularity and impunity every Friday in Jerusalem.

The two Rotters are engaged in a rather pathetic attempt to cover their tracks and make themselves out to the victims in this farce of Meir’s own making.  They’re clearly trying to sweep up the mess left from Meir, who took the “Kafe” name as a forum member and who uses ‘[email protected]” as an e-mail address, which exposed his identity.  Interestingly, “Kafe’s” member profile at Rotter.net is marked “secret.”  Why would he need to use such a designation unless he was attempting to conceal his real identity from fellow forum members?  If Kafe is not Meir Rotter then they can prove this by providing a screenshot or link to Kafe’s real member profile along with a date on the page to show that it was retrieved on a date before yesterday, when I exposed the connection between the two.  If they do not provide this date, then it would be far too simple for them to change Kafe’s personal data now to make it look like there is no connection.

Meir Rotter is quoted lying in the Channel 10 interview as saying: “Why would I need to post in the forum?  Anything I have to say can be said by the police spokesperson[ on my behalf].  I’m a policeman, that’s all.”  The Israeli police themselves reacted angrily, according to the reporter, saying they would not respond to the charges and that this was an attempt to smear one of their own.  Can you imagine how the formal complaint against Rotter registered with the police by the protesters will be handled?

At least Rotter will know that the world will be watching his behavior.  If he behaves in the manner he advocates at Rotter.net, he will be held accountable–if not by the police as he should, at least by this blog and the “anti-Zionist, post-Israeli” Israeli media.

Barak Leaving Labor: Rats Leaving Sinking Ship

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Put this under the category: the Mystifying Doing the Inscrutable.  Ehud Barak will announce that he and four other members of the Labor Knesset delegation will leave the party and form a new faction to be called–get this–”Independence” (other suggested names, “The New Center,” the “Jewish Democratic Zionist Center,” what a mouthful!).  This is the same guy who is the current chairman of the Party!  Two other prominent Labor Party leaders, Amir Peretz and Eitan Cabel, are about to jump to Kadima.  This, at long last, is the final gasp of the once illustrious party.  It’s a Party that Shimon Peres really killed off when he deserted it for Kadima at Ariel Sharon’s behest.  Perhaps it was brain dead even before then.

But until Barak finally drove a stake through its heart Labor was walking, zombie-like (sorry for mixing my monster metaphors) through the Israeli political landscape.  Now it is dead or will be shortly.

The Labor Party chief seems to have foreseen a vote within the Party to withdraw from the ruling coalition, which would’ve forced Barak to give up his coveted defense ministry portfolio.  He made clear that he feels he was driven from the Party by leftists who had no interest in advancing the peace process represented (!) by the current government.

Barak’s betrayal will further splinter the liberal center.  In the next election he will be lucky if he saves his own seat.  The other three MKs who jumped ship with him don’t have a hope in hell of earning enough votes to get them back into the Knesset.

The death of Labor will strengthen Kadima numerically.  But it will most help the Likud, since there will be no principled liberal alternative to it.  It will also strengthen Hadash, since it will assume the mantle of the last viable truly progressive Israeli party (I won’t even talk about Meretz, another zombie party–dead party walking).

I would say Barak is like a rat fleeing a sinking ship except that this rat gnawed through the ship’s hull and caused it to sink.  Now, he’s only confirming what everyone but him knew all along.

Meir Rotter, Undercover Sheikh Jarrah Cop, Confirmed as Forum Member Inciting Violence Against Demonstrators

Sunday, January 16th, 2011
Meir Rotter's online identity confirmed as Kafe

Message sent to a Yahoo Group listing Meir Rotter's name (underlined) and mouseover which displays his e mail address: '[email protected]'

Yesterday, I reported that Jerusalem undercover police officer, Meir Rotter, son of the founder of the popular internet portal, Rotter.net, had posted messages at his father’s website inciting violence against the peaceful Sheikh Jarrah protesters opposing the Judaizing of East Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods.  I had lots of circumstantial evidence that Meir Rotter, police officer, was Kafe, the Rotter forum member who posted angry, racist rants attacking demonstrators, the Israeli government, the media and everyone except his radical settler friends, for being gutless ‘anti-Zionist, post-Israeli’ wonders.

meir rotter manhandling sheikh jarrah protesters

Meir Rotter (in uniform this time) manhandling Sheikh Jarrah protesters last Friday (Oren Ziv/Activestills)

But until now, I hadn’t nailed the connection between the two identities.  A reader published a comment earlier today with a link to a Yahoo Group which displayed a message sent to Meir Rotter. If you mouseover the name, you see the e mail address resolves to ‘kafe1 at netvision.net.il’ (I’ve removed the @ sign that is in the real address in order to prevent Rotter’s e mail address from being spammed).  If you follow the link and your browser doesn’t properly resolve the Hebrew characters, mouseover the first name after the “To” and the e mail address will display for you.

The fact that Meir Rotter has chosen an e mail address ‘kafe1′ clinches his connection to Rotter member ‘Kafe.’

Among the things Rotter wrote in the forum were that settlers should spray yellow paint on the protesters and throw rocks at the individuals and their vehicles.  He called this “legitimate protest.”  He also boasted that “knives and axes” were the appropriate settler form of protest.  My Israeli source for this story also reports that last Friday Rotter “brutally assaulted” three demonstrators.  So now we know that a violent hooligan not only works for the Israeli national police beating up non-violent demonstrators, but that he publicly posts this incitement at his father’s website.

Meir Rotter acknowledged earlier today at an Israeli police online forum that he was both Rabbi Rotter’s son and an officer who worked the Sheikh Jarrah protest beat.  Though he denied that he was an administrator or moderator of Rotter.net, he pointedly did not deny that he was Kafe.  And for good reason…because he is!

Rabbi Rotter’s Son, Undercover Jerusalem Police Officer, Incites Violence Against Sheikh Jarrah Protesters

Meir Rotter, undercover police officer publicly advocates violence against Sheikh Jarrah protestors

For those not steeped in Israeli culture, there is an online forum called Rotter that plays a unique role in certain segments of Israeli society.  It’s a cross between FoxNews, Matt Drudge, DebkaFiles and NewsMax.  It is a wildly popular internet forum (Alexa ranks it 83rd in Israel) that deals in everything from celebrity gossip to political scoops and intelligence matters, all with a far-right political focus.  It’s especially known for its brand of vituperative, scabrous political debate, sorta like the Jerusalem Post talkbacks on steroids.  I’m routinely called “Terrorist” there as if it were my first name, which I wear of course as a badge of courage.

meir rotter leads west bank hike

Meir Rotter (note blue knitted skullcap) leading West Bank hike

Rotter.net was founded in 1999 by Rabbi Yeshayahu Rotter, who now runs the site with at least a few of his children helping administer and moderate it.  Meir Rotter, 37, married and the father of two, is Yeshayahu’s son and serves as a police officer in Jerusalem.  In a Wikipedia discussion, his sister Tamar confirms that her brother is a police officer.

He is a fixture at the weekly Sheikh Jarrah demonstrations where he’s been assigned for the past six months.  You can see him “in action” toward the end of this Sheikh Jarrah video in which he steals a Palestinian flag from the hands of an Israeli demonstrator.  He’s known to be a particularly nasty, odious presence wearing his enormous blue settler-style skullcap, wraparound sunglasses, and a pistol strapped to his waist (see picture).  Since he never wears a police uniform at the protests, he would appear to be a plain clothes officer.  Frankly, I can’t quite figure out why he’d be there in plain clothes dressed as a settler.  He wouldn’t be fooling anyone.

Most of this could be figured out pretty easily using public and online records.  But what is hitherto unknown is that an Israeli source tells me that Meir Rotter is not only an administrator of Rotter, but a member who posts under the name Kafe, some of the most offensive material inciting violence against the Sheikh Jarrah demonstrators.  He routinely calls them “leftist fascist, anti-Zionist, post-Israeli.”  That Meir Rotter is a police officer isn’t news.  That a Rotter administrator posts material advocating violence against lawful Israeli citizens isn’t news either.  But the fact that a police officer paid by the Jerusalem municipality ostensibly to enforce the law and keep the peace speaks of knives and axes as “legitimate means of  protest” should open a few eyes somewhere.

It certainly won’t open the eyes of Doron Zahavi, the former IDF torturer of Mustafa Dirani, who is the now the Jerusalem police “liaison” to the East Jerusalem Arab community.  Undoubtedly, Zahavi and Rotter work together, perhaps in the same unit.  Perhaps Zahavi is teaching Rotter a thing or two about torturing Arabs, just as the former’s subordinates sodomized Dirani in an Israeli prison several years ago.

There is compelling evidence to support the claim that Kafe and Rotter fils are one and the same person.  First, Kafe was one of the earliest members to sign up for the forum (on October 21, 2001) just after it was revamped in the format it presently has.  Second, for the past seven months many of his posts deal with the Sheikh Jarrah protests and police affairs related to them.  In particular, they often deal with intelligence about either the Israeli protestors or the East Jerusalem Arab community.  This is intelligence that would only be available or even interesting to either a police officer or a Shabak agent.

The image above on the right is from one of the hikes Rotter leads in the West Bank for his religious-nationalist acolytes.  Here one of the participants names Rotter and refers to pictures that he took on one of these hikes.  Another gallery on the same Picasa account displays images of Rotter himself (see right-hand image above) leading the hikes.

There is another stylistic element of Rotter’s writing that nails his identity as Kafe.  In Wikipedia, he writes (in Hebrew) under his own name:

Often the number in Shomron reaches into the hundreds! of hikers.

In Rotter, he writes as Kafe:

Every day, my dear friend receives free, at no cost! these two newspapers at the doorstep of his home.

meir rotter violent post

Meir Rotter advocates spraying Sheikh Jarrah protesters with yellow paint

I’d say it’s a pretty rare thing for two different people to place exclamation marks in the middle of sentences as Rotter has done here.  Using brackets [!] would not be unusual, but unbracketed is highly so.

I think the State might take an interest that one of its police officers is writing material like the following.  Keep in mind that these are entirely non-violent demonstrations at which the only violence comes from the side of the police:

We should bring some yellow spray paint and spray the rioting anarchists and their band of left-wing fascists who join and even lead them.  With the slogan: “Paint the traitors yellow [the color of cowardice], we’ll tar and feather ‘em for the traitors against their people and terrorists against the state that they are.

Since axes, knives and clubs are a legitimate form of protest, spray paint will be my favorite weapon.

meir rotter violent post

Meir Rotter's forum post advocating rock-throwing and damaging vehicles of Sheikh Jarrah protesters

Or that he here advocates stoning protestors and vandalizing their property.  Keep in mind that there is never any violence of any kind at the Friday Sheikh Jarrah protest except that perpetrated by the police against the protesters:

The anarchists view it as suitable to express their protests using massive stones thrown at vehicles, homes and people [in Sheikh Jarrah], why should we not wait for them at the exit of the village and take the same form of protest to them and their vehicles.  Why wouldn’t they think that legitimate?

At last Friday’s Sheikh Jarrah protest, my source reveals that Officer Rotter “brutally assaulted” three demonstrators.  It sounds like he’s a very loose cannon prone to do some serious and personal damage if not reined in.

Here (Hebrew original) our favorite officer of the law even lumps the policies of the Israeli government with those of the “anarchists” and radical Islamists:

Not all is rosy in East Jerusalem.  The policy of the Israeli government itself, along with the activism of the leftist-fascist-anarchists in the eastern part of the city, and including the unceasing attempts by the PA and/or the Islamic Movement –they all cause severe harm to the control of the State of Israel over Jerusalem.  The topic of what the Arabs really want [to destroy Israel] is never broached in  Israeli [political] discussion.

Kafe advocates an iron hand against the Palestinian community.  He suggests that protests must be isolated to the Arab villages and not be allowed to spread to the streets of the city.  His ultimate goal is that the Jewish residents of the city never even hear about the protests in their own city except in the media.  The price, if there is any, will be paid by the Arabs themselves who will harm, or so he claims, only themselves and not the city’s Jewish residents.

Rotter seems obsessed with the notion that the protests might spread outside East Jerusalem and infect Jewish neighborhoods.  That would be, in his fervid imagination, making the mistake that any government makes when faced with civil unrest and chaotic conditions.  If you engage even a moment’s doubt and fail to use every means at your disposal to violently clamp down, you will find the bastards running down your own street committing acts of hooliganism and God knows what to Jews.  Before you know it you’ll have anarchy and Arabs taking over the country.

Rotter/Kafe is contemptuous of the gutless Israeli media (Hebrew original):

Once again, the Israeli media in its true ugliness and degradation

It’s no secret that the Israeli media, by and large, is precisely like the UN, hypocrites, anti-Zionist, post-Israeli.  A megaphone and platform for the extreme leftist-anarchist agenda.  Yes, yes, they’ll deny it and say that anyone making such a claim is a fascist, someone who suppresses democratic rights and shuts people up.  They say that their role must be to expose and question and all sorts of bullshit coming from their demagogic lips.

In a survey of media coverage of Sheikh Jarrah we find not just hypocritical lies and falsification of facts, because the tendency in such coverage is toward a post-Israel, anti-Zionist, racist ideology which negates the rights of Jews to the Land of Israel

In a later portion of the same post, he brags that he persuaded a good friend to cancel the two subscriptions to Israeli daily newspapers which he had.  One was to Haaretz.  He didn’t specify the name of the other but it would either be Maariv or Yediot Achronot.  It is an indication of just how radical his political views are that he cast scorn even on these two dailies known for their right-of-center reporting.

UPDATE: Earlier today, Meir Rotter posted a reply to this post at an Israeli police officer’s online forum in which he acknowledged that he is an officer assigned to Sheikh Jarrah and that he is Rabbi Rotter’s son.  He denies that he is a moderator of the Rotter forum (because his father won’t pay him!).  But he specifically does not either mention or deny the most important claim of my source, that he is the Rotter member, Kafe.  There is a principle in the law: “silence is assent.”  It applies here.

I’m afraid my source may’ve passed this information on to me because s/he was afraid that if it was revealed in Israel alone Meir Rotter might receive a promotion, instead of being disciplined.  At least, if a foreign media source reports the matter, it may be treated as more than a curiosity.

It will surprise no one that the Jerusalem police force harbors in its midst violent radical settler thugs.  But it may surprise Israelis that such individuals will express their venom, hate and rage in such a public setting.  A question for the police superintendent to ponder: is he comfortable with his officers publicly advocating violence against peacefully, legally protesting Israeli citizens?  Is that the standard of law his personnel uphold?

Gaza Doctor Whose Family IDF Killed During Cast Lead on National Speaking Tour

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish Interview.

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, whose wife and three daughers were killed by an Israeli tank shell during Operation Cast Lead, is in the midst of a national speaking tour (see list for cities and dates) and promoting a new book he’s written on his life and the lessons he’s learned from the tragedy.  Though 1,400 were killed in Gaza, the doctor’s suffering was especially keenly felt as he had been a correspondent for Israeli TV reporting regularly on the assault.  Just as the TV news anchor called him, the shell hit and you can hear the wailing of Dr. Abuelaish as he realizes what’s happened.  It is some of the most heart-rending footage you will ever see or hear.  Subsequently, his story was told around the world including extensively in this blog and in the NY Times.

As a result, the doctor, who had been a gynecology specialist at an Israeli hospital and beloved by patients and staff there alike, left Gaza and moved to Toronto, where’s he raises the three other daughters who survived the attack.  The tank unit which massacred Dr. Abuelaish’s family has received no discipline of any kind.

He will be speaking at Seattle’s Town Hall on Wednesday, January 19th at 7:30PM.  He will also speak on Steve Scher’s KUOW show at 10AM on January 17th. If you live in the Pacific NW I urge you to hear a truly remarkable man, someone who has suffered enormously, but who manages to project a vision of peace that remains possible for these two peoples who have caused each other such pain.

His new book is I Shall Not Hate and is reported in this Guardian story.  If it’s half as extraordinary as the example this man has set, it is must reading.  Dr. Abuelaish’s tour began in Los Angeles on January 12th and will take him to a score of U.S. cities by April 1st.  If you have a chance see him it’s a wonderful opportunity.

Dagan, Peace Activist, Humanitarian?

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Yes, you read the headline right.  Though there is a touch of sarcasm in it.

Meir Dagan‘s valedictory on leaving the Mossad, where he was director for eight years, was remarkable for a man who was asked when appointed by Ariel Sharon, to go about his job with a “knife between his teeth.”  In fact, if Yossi Melman is to be believed, Dagan has become a remarkable pragmatist regarding the burning strategic issues confronting Israel, most notably Iran (I’ve amplified the Haaretz English version with elements removed from the translation of the original):

…Dagan was quoted last week as saying…that Israel should use military force only if it is attacked, or if it has “a sword at its neck.”

These remarks were interpreted, and rightly so, as undermining the position of the prime minister, who wants to create the impression that if Iran doesn’t halt its efforts to attain nuclear weapons, there will be no way to avoid the use of military force against it. So during a meeting with foreign correspondents in Israel on Tuesday, Netanyahu argued that only a credible threat that military force will be used could get Iran to stop trying to obtain nuclear weapons.

The prime minister was not the only who did not like what Dagan said. Representatives of Western powers were also upset. “His remarks harmed the international effort to persuade Iran’s leaders that if they do not voluntarily suspend their uranium enrichment, Israel will attack it,” a liaison officer with the Mossad of a large Western intelligence organization told me. He wondered why Dagan even had to say anything.

…The answer is that Dagan, as always, said what was in his heart, and did not tailor his assessments to correspond to the requirements of premiers and top ministers. As someone who’s been wounded twice in Israel’s wars, he well knows the price and danger of war.  And it’s possible that upon his retirement and with the impending retirement of Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, who like him is said to oppose the reckless, crazy idea that Israel should attack Iran, Dagan is trying to relay a warning to Netanyahu, and to his successors in the executive branch, not to make an adventurous decision.

There are several ways to evaluate this interesting passage.  First, Melman seems to have a bit of a soft spot in his heart both for the Mossad as an institution and Dagan in particular.  From what I know of Melman from his lacerating e mails they share a similarly sharp, unforgiving, self-righteous personality type.  So you could somewhat discount the remarks above in that sense.

But overall I think they testify to the fact that despite the monstrous nature of some of Dagan’s acts, at bottom he’s capable of rational, pragmatic analysis of the facts put before him.  He hates the Iranian regime no doubt as much as Michael Ledeen and if he could would topple it in a heartbeat.  But from a purely pragmatic perspective I think he understands that an attack would be a disaster and end with the death not only of Israeli soldiers, but likely Israeli civilians as well.  To his credit and in a way that separates him from political leaders like Netanyahu, he comprehends the horror that would be a regional war with Iran and likely her proxies (Hezbollah and Syria, among others).

Bibi in 1989 Supported Palestinian Mass Expulsions

Thursday, January 13th, 2011
bibi supports palestinian expulsion

Original Hebrew text of Netanyahu statement supporting Palestinian expulsion from Territories

For the life of me I don’t know why this 1989 statement from Bibi Netanyahu, when he a was a junior minister in the Shamir government, hasn’t received more play.  The following is from Yaakov Lazar (note his biting satire in the second paragraph) in the left-wing, now defunct Al Ha-Mishmar (translated by Mark Marshall):

Deputy Foreign Minister MK Bibi Netanyahu, the man who this week bitterly lamented the lack of Glasnost in the Arab states, is the same man who said this week: ‘Israel should have taken advantage of the suppression of the demonstrations in China [Tiananmen Square], when the world’s attention was focussed on what was happening in that country, to carry out mass expulsions among the Arabs of the Territories. However, to my regret, they did not support that policy that I proposed, and which I still propose should be implemented.’

It is a good thing that there is Glasnost in Communist bloc countries, because that permits us to say to the Arab states: why don’t you try a little Glasnost yourselves? Isn’t it about time you joined the family of civilized nations? But on the other hand, there is no need to carry this blessed process too far, because it is useful that a few Communist states remain that suppress Glasnost with an iron fist, preferably with bloodshed. Because if none such remain, how can we take advantage of the world’s attention being focussed on what is going on there, in order to transfer our Arabs in a civilized way here?

Alas, in those days Bibi was more inclined to speak what he really believes as opposed to now, when he’s learned how to speak with a forked tongue, saying nothing and meaning precisely the opposite of what comes from his mouth (or meaning nothing at all).

Lest anyone believe that this man will bring peace, that this man will negotiate in good faith with Palestinians, that this man will recognize a Palestinian state, let them read this and try to say otherwise.

Hey, and for those of you who complain about how nasty and racist Yvet Lieberman is compared to his polished boss, Bibi, just remember when the latter was in foreign ministry his views were frightening similar to Lieberman’s.

H/t to Yossi.

Israeli Settler-Rabbi to Infertile Jewish Couples: ‘Goyish Sperm Leads to Criminality, Barbarism’

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

I swear these rabbis are such sitting ducks sometimes I feel sorry for ‘em that I have write posts like this.  But given the nuttiness they espouse, what choice does one have?

rabbi dov lior arab hater

Rabbi Dov Lior, exemplar of settler-rabbinic wisdom

One of Israeli Orthodoxy’s leading rabbinic lights, Rabbi Dov Lior, chief rabbi of that idyllic Jewish town of Hebron, told a conference at an Israeli fertility conference that Jewish couples must not use the sperm of non-Jewish men for artificial insemination because the traits of the goy will pass on to the child:

According to Lior, a baby born through such an insemination will have the “negative genetic traits that characterize non-Jews.”

Sefer HaChinuch (The Book of Education) states that the character traits of the father pass on to the son,” he said in the lecture. “If the father in not Jewish, what character traits could he have? Traits of cruelty, of barbarism! These are not traits that characterize the people of Israel.“Lior added identified Jews as merciful, shy and charitable – qualities that he claimed could be inherited. “A person born to Jewish parents, even if they weren’t raised on the Torah – there are things that are passed on (to him) in the blood, it’s genetic,” he explained. “If the father is a gentile, then the child is deprived of these things.

“I even read in books that sometimes the crime, the difficult traits, the bitterness – a child that comes from these traits, it’s no surprise that he won’t have the qualities that characterize the people of Israel,” he added.

A few years ago when I wrote about the Terry Schiavo mess one of the major points I tried to make was that religion and science and politics and science can be a toxic mixture.  It seems that Rabbi Lior has taken my advice to heart.  He’s devoted himself totally to religion and divorced himself totally from science.  Which would be OK had he not decided that he somehow became a scientific expert by dint of his alleged mastery of Jewish law.  You see, that’s where people get in trouble.  Like when Tom DeLay decided he would legislate Terry Schiavo’s medical care regimen.

Here the good rabbi retreats to 16th century genetic theory by positing that traits of temperament that are allegedly Jewish can be inherited.  I think this notion was discredited somewhere around the time of Lamarque.  But don’t tell Lior and his followers.  It might disturb their ignorance.

Lior, not to be outdone by Dr. Mengele, once said that it was permissible to conduct medical experiments on captured Arab terrorists.  You see what happens when morons arrogate to themselves a medical degree?  He’s one of those who calls Baruch Goldstein a saint and martyr.  He also joined the pulsa dinura which gave rabbinic blessing to the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.  Finally, Foreign Policy Magazine in 2008 named Lior one of the “world’s worst religious leaders.”  Right up there no doubt with Osama bin Laden (if you consider him a religious leader), Savanorola and Rasputin.

Returning to the subject of fertility, if these idiots would have an ounce of humility and allow scientists to be scientists and not interpose themselves between science and their religious adherents, the world would be a lot better off.

I also enjoyed the notion that goyim are brutes while Jews are kind.  I guess he hasn’t visited Gaza lately to see what the ‘merciful, shy and charitable’ IDF (Jewish boys almost all) is doing there.  Oh, I forgot, Jews don’t have to be merciful toward Palestinians, only toward their fellow Jews (or more likely toward their fellow Orthodox Jews as the rest of us Jews are mere apostates in their eyes).

Unfortunately, we’re not done with Lior’s ‘wisdom’:

Lior condemned artificial insemination and sperm donation in general, saying that they lead to waste of sperm, unclear genealogy and other Jewish law offenses. He warned against undergoing intrauterine insemination at hospitals, where the workers may mix sperm samples for one reason or another – a major halachic violation.

On the subject of women who freeze their eggs to use at a later date, the rabbi asserted that instead they should concentrate their efforts on getting married younger. “Our public has been influenced by a part of the Western culture in which every woman, instead of becoming a mother, needs to get a Masters Degree,” he lamented. “The role of women – child rearing – is not less important than an academic degree.” Lior noted that there is nothing wrong with attaining a profession, but it should not be a priority.

Moreover, the rabbi spoke against single women getting pregnant. “We can understand the desire of every woman to have a child, but according to our Torah it is impossible to address the demand of a certain woman when it can cause someone else [the child] suffering,” he said.

“If a child is born without a father, he cannot be 100% normal.” He stated that rabbinical literature defines these kids as “criminals and subjects of other negative phenomena.”

There was a time earlier in my life when I believed that rabbis represented, or at least should represent the most enlightened aspects of Judaism.  They should be lights unto Jews and non-Jews alike.  They should exemplify a life well led according to high ethical norms.  But after Rabbi Meir Kahane, it’s now clear that rabbis harbor some of the worst tendencies reflected in all human beings.  Many don’t even bother to temper these noxious tendencies.  In fact, they may be proud of ‘em.

I should add that Lior’s declarations fly in the face of normative Orthodox halacha which says that sperm of non-Jews is preferable to that of an unknown Jewish donor because the latter, if Ashkenazi, might cause genetic defects like Tay Sachs and other possible abnormalities.
