Australia Expels Israeli Diplomat Over Forged Passports in Dubai Assassination

Monday, May 24th, 2010

These Mossad assassins used forged Australian passports (ABC/AAP)

Australia today informed Israel that it was expelling a diplomat as a penalty for Israel’s role in forging Australian passports used in the Dubai assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabouh. Though the government would not say who was expelled, Britain expelled Israel’s local Mossad station chief and one would assume Australia did the same.

The fact that Australia took months after the infraction to act indicates it wanted to do little more than slap Israel on the wrist.  The statement by the foreign minister confirms this:

“The Government takes this step much more in sorrow than anger or retaliation,” Mr Smith said.

The problem with Australia’s wrist slap is that all of those nations whose passports were forged or whose sovereignty was violated have essentially given Israel a green light to do something like this again in future.  U.S. credit cards were abused by the Israelis and two of the assassins traveled to this country after the murder, yet not a peep has come out of the Obama administration.  Contrast this with the whirlwind of U.S. intelligence activity and press briefings that accompany word of Islamic terrorism on these shores.  Why do we give Mossad a pass?

Israel is like a substance abuser who requires intervention to prevent self-destructive behavior.  The nations of the world have basically washed their hands of Israel in this matter.  The only silver lining is that Australia promised that if such acts happen again it will take stronger action:

He also said Israel should realise it is on notice that if it again fabricates Australian passports similar or stronger action would be taken.

But one has to wonder what the value of these nice sounding words is.  When push comes to shove will Australia do anything different next time?

And Israel of course has learned no lesson from all of this:

When asked if Israel had acknowledged its part in the affair or had apologised, Mr Smith replied: “In terms of the substance of these matters Israel has not been drawn in those conversations or drawn on those matters.”

Kamm Trial to Begin

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Israeli reporters bring word that the Anat Kamm trial is to begin tomorrow.  This means that the Shin Bet was unwilling to compromise and to negotiate for a reduced sentence. It also means that they feel the need to make an example of her.

For those who know Hebrew, here is a radio discussion about Kamm (audio stream), her current living conditions and the upcoming trial. The hosts interviews Kamm’s spokesperson, Nissim Dweck, who notes that “calling her act spying is to demean the meaning of the term.”

Don’t Like an Israel Palestinian MK? Burn Him

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010
burn talib a-sana

Israeli rightists call for burning Israeli Palestinian MK

burning at the stake

Let's bring back the good old days of yesteryear when torture was in vogue

One of my Israeli readers brings word of a truly ghoulish Israeli right-wing Facebook group, I Too Want to Burn MK Talib A-Sana. It seems that A-Sana, the Israeli Palestinian elected representative of the Raam-Tal Arab nationalist party has asked the officers of the Knesset for permission to travel to Gaza to witness conditions under which the residents live while under Israeli siege. He wanted to explore Israel’s use of weapons during Operation Cast Lead that violate international law and to amass evidence that could be used before the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

Provocative? Yes. But who’d a thunk there’d be Israelis nutty enough to advocate publicly in Facebook burning the guy at the stake for his alleged sins? One of the most entertaining passages in the Facebook page actually argues that Israeli rightists really don’t want to be racists, but Israeli Palestinians make them that way. Truly:

They don’t understand that they are greatest promoters of the growth of the Israeli extremist right. We’re disgusted with the games you play daily in the Knesset. Your loyalty to the enemy turns us more and more into extremists. You’ve forgotten who you’re supposed to represent and who pays your salary. You won’t exist after the next election when Lieberman gets 20 seats. The Supreme Court, which refused to allow you to be banned, and your fellow Arab Knesset members leave us no other choice.

Some Israeli peace activists have posted hilarious rejoinders on the group’s Wall. Here’s one from Ziv Kitlaro:

Dear friends, If you haven’t already assigned all the jobs for the burning ceremony, I can bring the benzene. Who’s bringing Talib? We can collect firewood and bring potatoes to roast. I can also bring some books. It’ll be a great bonfire!

How else can you deal with horror than by satire and ridicule? If you didn’t laugh you’d cry for the poisoning of Israeli society with hate such as this.

The group was founded by Or and Dor Hasson (the rhymin’ Simon twins of the Israeli far right Facebook crowd). Who belongs to such a reprehensible group? Typical right-wing thugs perhaps? Not at all. The list of members reads like a Who’s Who of Israel’s finest education institutions. Here are a few of the credentials of the members of this estimable group:

Group founder Or Hasson is a real sweetheart who loves Grey’s Anatomy. Perhaps he’s looking for medical ways to increase the pain he can inflict on A-Sana?  His twin or kissin’ cousin Dor, loves trance music and Baruch Marzel.  What a combination!  Then there’s David Elatov, a mechanical engineering student at Israel’s most prestigious scientific university, the Technion.

The following are graduates of the renowned Leo Baeck School, named for the famed Reform liberal, humanist rabbi who perished during the Holocaust.  I’m virtually certain that Rabbi Baeck would be pleased by the ethical excellence displayed by students who studied at an educational institution named in his memory:

Tal Shem-Tov
Shani Hazout
Tanya Zilberfain
Sagi Amsalem
Ron Evron
Naftali Naftlive
Menashe Azar
Mor Golan
Sapir Moyal
Avi Hermon
Tali Rivkin
Asaf Yeshurun
Barak Machtinger
Anna Arutiunian

Ori De-Paz is doing post-graduate work at Bar Ilan’s graduate school of management. Ido Madmon’s motto is:

When you trample on an ant for a joke, it dies for real

Perhaps Ido betrays more concern for ants than he does Arabs, who he’s fully prepared to burn alive. Or maybe he thinks Arabs won’t burn when you light a match to them and that it’d all be a most excellent game.

The greatest enemies of the my people have burned Jews at the stake from the Romans to the Inquisitors. The Nazis burned our books on Kristallnacht. Now there are Jews who want to inflict the same punishment on their enemies. A schande. What do I have in common with these hooligans, thugs and pogromists? Can Jewish blood really flow in their veins? They may’ve photoshopped horns onto Talib A-Sana’s head but the only devils I see are the ones who are making a mockery out of Israel in the eyes of the world through their hate.

Jewish Forward Helps Hagee Wash Away His Sins

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010
john hagee

Hagee ♥ Jews--or so he claims

Many Jews know John Hagee, founder of Christians United for Israel and leading Christian Zionist zealot, as an anti-Semite who believes Hitler was sent by God to help create the State of Israel.   They may also know he supports an Israeli attack on Iran and that he likens Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Hitler.  They may also know that he is a pro-settler, not-one-incher, who believes every bit of Biblical Israel was given to the Jewish people by God.  Hagee condemns any peace settlement or Israeli leader who considers withdrawing from a single settlement and labels withdrawal or territorial compromise a betrayal of God’s covenant with Israel.  Perhaps he is most notoriously known for embracing an End Times narrative that calls for Jews who refuse to convert to be killed with the remaining remnant coming to Jesus to be reborn in the blood of the Christian lamb.  Less well-known is his classical anti-Semitic view that the world economic order is controlled by a group like the Illuminati, one of whose primary members are the Rothschild family:

Our economic destiny is controlled by the Federal Reserve system that is now headed by Alan Greenspan. Think about this. It is not a government institution. It is controlled by a group of Class A stockholders including the Rothschilds of Europe…So get this one thought : The value of your dollar is controlled by an organization that is not controlled by America.

Jewish leaders like Rabbi Eric Yoffie have railed against Hagee in the pages of the Jewish Forward, urging their members not to collaborate with or participate in events sponsored by CUFI.

So imagine my surprise when I read John Hagee’s name plastered on The Forward’s website this week.  Astonishingly, the liberal Jewish publication had given the uber-Zionist. anti-Semite a platform for his noxious views.  The piece the Forward published is extraordinary in so many ways.  I have read many speeches and sermons by John Hagee.  While they are always deeply disturbing, the Forward op ed is startingly different because it advances a revisionist version of Hagee as philo-Semite, two-stater, land-for peacer that is entirely at variance with his preceding career.  It’s as if a plastic surgeon took a flabby, balding, flat-footed, nondescript man and turned him into George Clooney (or to be more political accurate, Charlton Heston–when he was alive at least).

In fact, the Forward column is so poles apart from the Hagee that anyone who’s read him knows that I half-believe it wasn’t written by him; but rather by a Jewish ghost-writer (possibly like his PR flack Ari Morgenstern or political lobbyist, David Brog).

In short, the Forward piece is a tissue of lies easily disproved by the most basic Google searches of his previous writings.  For the most detailed and cmprehensive refutation of Hagee’s claims read this primer researched and published by Talk2Action’s Rachel Tabachnick, one of the most authoritative of the former’s Jewish critics.  The main howlers are his claim that he is willing to accept a two-state solution (although he doesn’t endorse this path himself even in this column) if Israel itself does:

Another concern that some individuals have expressed is that Christian Zionists will use our influence to stand in the way of efforts to advance a two-state solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. Such a claim shows a complete disregard for our record.

What is Hagee’s record?  Just after 30 evangelical leaders wrote a letter to Pres. Bush endorsing a two-state solution, the good Pastor penned his own letter which laid out his negative views of a two-state solution.  It read in part:

Mr. President, we write this letter to state we are opposed to America pressuring Israel to give up more land for any reason.

…Simply stated, land for peace is a policy is a failed policy of the past that has produced nothing but more war.

And further:

There will be grave consequences for the nation or nations that attempt to divide the land of Israel… This is not a time to provoke God and defy him to pour out judgment on our nation for being a principal in the division of the land of Israel.”

–from Hagee’s Jerusalem Countdown: a Warning to the World

In this video, Hagee argues that if the U.S. pressures Israel to give up land for peace that God will judge this country be releasing a terrorist who will wreak havoc on us:

To give up more land for peace, Joel 3:2, says any nation that tries to get Israel to divide my land, I will bring it into judgement,  I want those of you in the State Department and in Washington to hear this..  If America does not stop pressuring Israel to give up land I believe that God will bring this nation into judgment because I believe what this book says.  And if God brings this nation into judgement he will very likely release the terrorist that you’ve already let here  through the ridiculous immigration policy that you refuse to stop and this nation is going to go through a blood bath that you have permitted because of what you have done.”

In fact, Hagee defines for us what he believes Israel’s legitimate modern borders should be, which if implemented, would be a whopper of a land for peace deal in Israel’s favor!

“In modern terms, Israel rightfully owns all of present-day Israel, all of Lebanon, half of Syria, two-thirds of Jordan, all of Iraq, and the northern portion of Saudi Arabia.”

The Battle for Jerusalem

So, if you read Hagee’s Forward screed carefully you will see what he is really saying is I detest a two state solution and land for peace.  But if Israel embraces it, I won’t stand in the way. But even that is undermined by his seeming endorsement of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin as detailed by Max Blumenthal in The Nation:

…In his 1996 book The Beginning of the End, Hagee described the murder of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin as fulfillment of prophecy and suggested admiration for Rabin’s assassin, Yigal Amir.

Imagining Amir’s mindset as he prepared himself to kill Rabin, Hagee wrote, “Tonight, if God was good, an opportunity would show itself. No longer would Rabin be able to transfer Israeli lands to Palestinians. The damage he’d done in the West Bank and Gaza was enough. Israel had a divine right to the land, and to give it away was an act of treason against Israel and an abomination against God.”

Does this suggest to you someone who’s prepared to accept an Israeli peace plan that betrays such principles?

Hagee claims, in the Forward, to be uninterested in the conversion of Jews:

The first rule adopted by Christians United for Israel was that there would be no proselytizing at our events. CUFI exists only to honor and support the Jewish people, never to convert them.

Well, get a gander of this:

“There are several purposes [in the Tribulation which accompanies the End Times], and the first is to bring Israel to the place where she will recognize Jesus Christ as the Messiah…

While CUFI itself may not proselytize, Hagee has in fact endorsed a Christian ministry preaching to Jews in Israel:

“Your gift to support the ongoing work of Maoz Israel Ministries enables us to continue on our mission – to bring the Good News of the Gospel of Messiah to the people of Israel until ALL ISRAEL IS SAVED!”

A CUFI director, Stephen Strang, who publishes much of Hagee and CUFI’s materials also brings out a magazine, Charisma, which offered this appraisal of missionary work in Israel :

“In this issue, we offer a look at the Christian peacemakers who are taking the gospel of Jesus Christ not only to Jews and Muslims but also to Russian and Ethiopian immigrants, prisoners, unwed mothers, drug addicts and tourists who visit this unique land. We hope that when you visit Israel you will look beyond the stone monuments, churches and biblical sites to discover the people of faith who are transforming the land.”

Hagee claims to have nothing but respect for the Jewish religion.  Yet, this is what he had to say about Rabbi Hillel, perhaps the most important rabbinic figure of the Talmudic era:

“Hillel was an extremist...

Final Dawn Over Jerusalem

And this concerning those stiff-necked Jews who refused to accept the divinity of Jesus:

“When will the divinely imparted spiritual blindness upon the Jewish people end concerning the identity of Jesus Christ as Messiah?

Jerusalem Countdown

Do feel some pity for the poor godless Reform Jews Hagee excoriates here:

“I think if I could put a dividing line, the Orthodox and Conservatives who have a Torah appreciation give us wholehearted support. The rest who are not driven by the Word of God have a liberal agenda. And the liberal agenda is they are pro-abortion. They’re pro-homosexual. They’re pro-gay marriage — they want men to marry men and women to marry women…

–San Antonio Express, July 2006

And then there is the whigged-out Hagee devising a theory of Jewish demons so convoluted that it would drive even a conspiracy theorist to drink:

“The case of Esau and Jacob is the pinnacle of divine election.  Each was a pure-blooded Jew…Esau’s descendants would also produce a lineage that would attack and slaugher the Jews for centuries…It was Esau’s descendants who produced the half-breed Jews of humanity who have persecuted and murdered Jews beyond human comprehension.

Adolph Hitler was a distant descendant of Esau.”

In the following passage from Hagee’s Forward article, he addresses the End Times scenario of which so many Jews are leery:

Other [Jews suspicious of us] posit that our Zionism is tied to an effort to speed the second coming of Jesus. [This] allegation is flat wrong…

…The fact is that the vast majority of Christian Zionists and Evangelicals do not believe there is anything we can do to hasten the second coming of Jesus. Our theology is clear that we humans are utterly powerless to change God’s timetable. Yes, like many Jews we do believe that the creation of Israel was the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. And like our Jewish friends we also search the Scriptures to understand what may come next in God’s plans for His creation. But since we are powerless to change these plans, our motives for standing with Israel come from elsewhere.

In other words, Hagee’s belief in an apocalyptic future in which Jews are fated to die (curiously any discussion of this theological belief of his is missing from the Forward)  is nothing personal.  Rather it is a divine plan over which Hagee has no control.  So if Jews have any problem with it don’t take it up with Hagee, take it up with the Guy Upstairs.  Further, he would have us believe that he and his followers are quiescent folks who sit back and wait for the Lord’s will to be done.  That they do nothing in order to hasten God’s plan.  And whatever they do do, they do for the purest of motives having nothing to do with End Times theology.

In fact, this view of Hagee and CUFI flies in the face of everything we know about them.  The truth is they are an activist group and the purpose of their activism is to hasten the Second Coming.

Hagee in The Forward is only too happy to play the religious hate card by making Israel’s and America’s chief enemy, Islam:

Christian Zionists also recognize that Israel is not the cause of militant Islam’s hatred of America, but an ally in the fight against militant Islam. Until 9/11 and the ensuing events, Israel largely confronted this threat alone. And to this day the frontline of this conflict remains Israel’s backyard. But Christian Zionists understand that Israel is merely militant Islam’s first target. While American and Israeli soldiers do not fight on the same battlefield, they defend the same values.

In penning this bilge, Hagee is oblivious to the fact that Israel’s chief opponent is not “militant Islam,” but the Palestinian people, who are not motivated primarily by religious hatred, but rather by a political grievance, that is 42 years of Occupation.  Even if you argue falsely that Hamas is no different from Al Qaeda and it is motivated by religious hatred of Israel, how do you explain the equally implacable resistance of Fatah and West Bank Palestinians to Occupation?  Such nuance is lost on Hagee.

Finally, the idea that American and Israeli soldiers defend the same values is ludicrous, unless you want to argue somehow that U.S. occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan are parallel to Israel’s Occupation of Palestinian lands.  This, of course is Al Qaeda’s argument and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to find the latter in agreement with John Hagee, as they are both religious extremists.

Finally, I take strong exception to The Forward’s decision to publish this execrable nonsense. The paper’s op-ed editor, the right-leaning Daniel Treiman commissioned this piece and he should have his license to practice journalism suspended. Did he do any fact-checking before publishing this? Or did he feel his author was of such impeccable reputation that such rudimentary editorial review was unnecessary?

Furthermore, the Forward deleted comments posted by Rachel Tabachnick and Bruce Wilson of Talk2Action, Jewish opponents of Hagee, in the thread for this article. Their contributions offered Hagee quotations like the ones above to rebut the claims he made. I’m assuming that Treiman as op-ed editor made the decision to excise these perfectly reasonable comments. Did he or did someone higher in the food chain? If so, why?

Until recently, Rachel Tabachnick contributed articles twice a month to Zeek, a progressive Jewish publication which shares a website with The Forward, about Hagee and Christian Zionism. Her work on this subject has been suspended by Zeek’s editor, Jo Ellen Kaiser. No one can now write for Zeek about either matter.

This is the first in a series of posts I’ll be writing about Hagee’s relationship with The Forward and Zeek, threats levelled against them by Hagee, and questions raised about the suspension of Tabachnick’s work. Stay tuned…

Dershowitz for President…of Israel

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Yes, I kid you not. President of Israel.  The guy is a pure megalomaniac.  Dersh melech Yisrael, Chai, Chai v’kayam (“Long live Dersh King of Israel…”)

On a related subject, this is the first news that Dershowitz may be considering Bibi’s urgent offer to become Israel’s chief UN flack otherwise known as ambassador:

Last Saturday night, Dershowitz told Channel 1 (Israel Television ) that he was considering Netanyahu’s offer to become Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations. A week earlier, he spoke at Tel Aviv University, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate. After his talk, the actor Alex Ansky told him, “You must be our next president.” To which Dershowitz replied, “That’s a job I won’t turn down.”

A commenter below with a totally straight face wrote the following:

I can’t think of anyone who would make a better president of Israel.  I think that he would lend the office all the dignity it deserves.

Her second sentence unintentionally conveys all the irony necessary when regarding the possibility of this political car crash.

Makhoul’s Lawyers Accuse Shin Bet of Possible Torture

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010
omar said and ameer makhoul

Dr. Omar Said and Ameer Makhoul imprisoned amid allegations of mistreatment

The Israeli court and Shin Bet acquiesced to a demand by Ameer Makhoul’s lawyers to consult with him after they’d been denied access to him for 12 days after his arrest.  They’d threatened to refuse to continue cooperating with the legal process in protest.  It appears that Israeli authorities only understand such threats and that is all that makes them do anything in conformance with standard due process procedures observed by most democracies.

Makhoul’s lawyers also added that they suspected that his treatment in detention violated the Geneva Convention governing treatment of prisoners.  Adalah, who is representing him, published a press release Serious Suspicion of Shabak (GSS) Use of Illegal Methods of Interrogation Against…Ameer Makhoul. The Israeli reports don’t details their reasons for suspecting this.  The director of Adalah said they expected to publish an affidavit from their client tomorrow which should shed more light on the subject.  In addition, the Shin Bet has refused to divulge Makhoul’s medical records while under detention, which raises further suspicions of what, if anything, they may be hiding.

Hassan Jaja, who is the mystery-man accused falsely of recruiting Makhoul, Omar Said and Jamal Juma’a to spy against Israel on behalf of Hezbollah, has released the transcript of his remarks at the opening of the 2007 conference his NGO sponsored in Amman on traditional Arab medicine.  Omar Said also spoke at this conference about his own experience in the field of pharmacology and traditional herbal medicine.  It was here, apparently, that the alleged fatal plot was hatched between Said and Jaja to betray the State of Israel.  After reading Jaja’s talk (translation from Arabic, Nadav Franckovitch; from Hebrew, Rechavia Berman), you’ll have to explain to me how likely it is that this environmental and peace activist is engaged in anything like what he’s accused of:

We greet you all in joy and warmth upon your arrival to the abode of Jordan, twin of Palestine.

Welcome to the first regional conference on Arab and Islamic Medicine, taking place under the auspices of the Master of the Land who is ever striving – and with God’s aid, successfully so – at instilling dynamism, momentum and development for the benefit of this good people, the noble nation and future generations.

The holding of this conference withing the domain of the Jordanian Hashemite Kingdom lends it special flavor and deep significance, under a stable, secure and balanced Arab and Islamic canopy.

We hold this conference today under…circumstances which bring to the forefront a poignant, primal and continuing conflict between a vivacious inclination…committed to the good in human nature, respectful of common sense, of mankind’s nature, its innate decency, its freedom and benefit – a direction which views man created in the image of the creator as the main part of creation due to his tendency towards reciprocal relationships, harmony and integration with all other creatures…rather than at their expense – and another inclination predicated on control, racism, seizure, exploitation and maximization of profits by any and all means, an inclination which serves neither man nor nature but fails them both, and heeds not the words of the sublime creator “Walk not complacent upon the earth so that thou shalt not destroy it, and thou shalt not exceed the mountain tops”.

Believe the sublime God who also said, in his dear book, “And we have created thee male and female and made you into nations and tribes so that thou shalt know that God has blessed thee”.

Believe the sublime God when not to Muslims or to Arabs alone He speaks. Therein lies a universal, human, open, healthy and just message.

…We see the Islamic culture as but an inseparable part of global culture, with which it once had expansive relations of mutual and fertile influence. This is our version of globalization which is consistent with the wisdom of the Creator, who laid the foundation for human knowledge and achievement…

This blessed conference we hold here today wishes to modestly direct efforts towards the revival and the imparting of learning of truth and justice, of equality and decency, and the freedom of nations and of man, learning of which the essence is to serve people, through an continuing aspiration to detect the true and practical needs and problems of man, and thus bring about serious, effective, proper and healthy scientific study, in search of proper solutions.

This is what we believe and according to this we act. And some may ask, is their any other approach in this world? Are there those who do not see man – whatever his color, whatever his religion, his language and nationality, his sex and appearance – as God’s creation? As one’s brother of equal value?

…Yes. There are forces, institutions, commercial corporations and groups whose concepts, aims, plans and modes of operation are based on exploitation, aggression and usurpation of the other, of people, of human societies, of countries and cultures, nations and religions.

Organizations which thrive on the creation of problems, which convince people of a myriad of imaginary needs and trumped-up ailments in order to sell their products and reap profits. Forces who bring about the destruction of the environment, the environmental balance and the health of mankind in order to foist their interests and designs upon others.

Our guiding principle and concept regarding professional and human interactions between people and institutions is “do no harm and you will suffer none.”

We at the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature have close ties and full cooperation with our brethren at the Galilee Society and its special center for scientific studies (“al-Maisam”), and with the ground-breaking al-Antaki firm, whose motto “When the Wisdom of the East Meets Modern Knowledge” I took a great liking to, and who I felt immensely proud upon learning that it exports its products to European markets at world-class standards.

…This scientific conference marks an important achievement. We express the humble hope that our efforts here shall lay the foundations…to revive the Arab-Islamic scientific heritage, which is engaged in harmonious dialogue with the cultures of other nations, and we begin this effort with the field of folk medicine. We extend our hand to our co-nationals in Jordan and our brethren in Palestine and throughout the Arab homeland, across the spectrum of occupations and professions, vocational organizations and trade unions and to artisans among the people, to create contacts and fruitful cooperation across borders – despite…hardships and…obstacles.

We may act together with determination, patience and faith that our variety is a building block of our unity and one of the sources of our strength.

May God be with us and grant us pure faith materialized in action beneficial to man, granting him satisfaction, peace of mind, calm and joy.

Peace be upon you, the mercy of God and His blessing.

Yes, Israel is the country that dare not speak Hassan Jaja’s name.  In fact, Haaretz’s Jack Khoury wrote an entire piece about him and not only didn’t mention his name, but refused to acknowledge that there are those of us out there who have mentioned it.  This, by the way, is something that other journalists did do during the Kamm-Blau case, but that was because Judith Miller acknowledged my role and it was difficult for such journalists to ignore the credit she’d offered.

Supporters of Dr. Omar Said have released this statement in support of a petition campaign on his behalf.  It is an excellent portrait of the man and his work on behalf of traditional Arab medicine:

Dr. Omar Said, pharmacologist…academic, peace and ecological activist, was arrested and accused of spying for Hizbollah…[He] is an important international intellectual figure, a scientist…and one of the world’s top experts on traditional Arabic medicine, Arabic medical history and medicinal plants. He has written many scientific papers, and the author of a forthcoming academic text which will be the most authoritative text on Arabic medicine in the world. He is the founder and director of the largest botanical garden of medicinal plants in the Middle East, run by an Israeli NGO. It is used both for research, preservation, and also education, ecology and co-existence…He has invited and given classes to many thousands of Arab and Jewish children at the botanical garden, bringing them together to study something of interest to all communities.

He is close to both Jews and Arabs in daily life, in work and in the intellectual community. He has been politically active, and was the deputy mayor of Kfar Kanna, in the Galilee. Much of this work has been to bring healing to his community and to the relationships between Jews and Arabs. All those who have worked with him on a daily basis, including many Jewish colleagues, know him to be a friend, a warm partner, a lover of peace and a great man with a big heart.

Dr. Said is constantly travelling throughout the world, in particular Jordan, where he buys herbs, carries out research, and meets experts from Arab countries. It is shameful that this activity is the reason for the suspicion of the Israeli security apparatus. It is likely that a great mistake and a serious injustice is happening right now.

Omar was arrested…under a very vague law that criminalises contact with anyone that the security authorities define as suspect. We call for the immediate release of Dr. Omar Said, and the end of the use of this law to harass individuals who are no actual risk or threat to security.

To sign this statement on behalf of Dr. Said, send an e mail with your name and any other identifying information to amar at al-antaki dot com.

One of the great shames of this case is how little public support Israeli Jews have offered to their persecuted fellow Palestinian citizens.  Not a peep out of a Jewish Knesset member.  Some support in op-eds.  Apart from an academic like Tel Aviv University’s Yehuda Shenhav, not a peep from that sphere.  They apparently have forgotten Pastor Niemoller’s warning: first they come for the Palestinians but since you are not one you don’t speak up; then they come for Naomi Chazan, the New Israel Fund, and human rights NGOs, but you are not one of them and so don’t speak up.  By the time they come for you, there’s no one left to speak up.

Israel’s Attack on Goldstone Belies Its Own Support of Apartheid

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Sasha Polakow-Suransky writes tellingly in Foreign Policy and Huffington Post about the current smear campaign against Judge Goldstone mounted by the Israeli government with the help of willing collaborating journalists like Tehiya Barak, Jeffrey Goldberg and Jonathan Chait. It was Barak who opened the floodgates with his Yediot Achronot hit-piece, undoubtedly inspired by material developed by the Lieberman-Ayalon foreign ministry.  Don’t ya just love the incestuous relationship the hacks in government ministries have with the hacks in the newsroom?

Since Barak claims that his story is a “special Yediot investigation,” let’s do the same thing it claimed to do to Goldstone’s record and shine a light on its journalistic claims. Well, it falls short right from the beginning when it claims that Goldstone “asserted that Israel committed war crimes.” He did nothing of the sort. What he DID assert was that his commission had amassed enough evidence that there MAY have been war crimes committed by BOTH sides that the charges should be investigated formally by both sides themselves.  Goldstone said many times that he was not a finder of fact as a judge would be in a formal legal proceeding.

The Yediot hit-piece continues with this breathless commentary:

The man who authored the Goldstone Report criticizing the IDF’s actions during Operation Cast Lead took an active part in the racist policies of one of the cruelest regimes of the 20th century.

During his tenure as sitting as judge in the appellant court during the 1980s and 1990s sentenced dozens of blacks mercilessly to their death.

This claim too falls by the wayside. Goldstone, as an appellate judge, reviewed sentences handed down by lower courts. And as such courts function everywhere, he could only overturn a verdict if he found a flaw in procedure or the earlier ruling.  Appellate judges don’t make law. They apply existing law. And in the rare instances in which they do innovate and plow new ground, they must do so in the context of the legal and legislative system in which function.

Not to mention that Goldstone only actually sentenced two individuals to death. The other 26 cases were appeals in which he upheld a lower court ruling.

The Goldstone smearmeisters have it all figured out with their 20-20 hindsight view of history. Goldstone’s responsibility was either to overturn capital punishment or resign his judgeship and emigrate from South Africa. Don’t you just love it when 20 years after the fact the smug hypocritical moralists come along and give advice about how others should behave in order to retain their moral purity?

Here Barak accuses Goldstone of committing the heresy of writing in favor of capital punishment, a crime committed–surprise, surprise–by most judges in this country who’ve ever affirmed such a sentence:

Goldstone sentenced at least 28 black defendants to death. Most of them were found guilty of murder and sought to appeal the verdict. In those days, he actually made sure he showed his support for the execution policy, writing in one verdict that it reflects society’s demands that a price be paid for crimes it rightfully views as frightening.

We’re going to have Supreme Court confirmation hearings soon for Elena Kagan. Would these same hypo-moralists demand that Kagan renounce capital punishment in her hearings? And if she couldn’t get four of her colleagues to agree that capital punishment should be overturned should she resign her seat and leave the country in disgust?

And keep in mind that Barak is in high moral dudgeon about South Africa’s policy of capital punishment when his own army regularly executes Palestinian militants without any trial. Is that the pot calling the kettle or what?

Here is another claim about which the only proper response is–not so fast, Barak:

Even when it came to far less serious offenses, Goldstone sided through and through with the racist policies of the Apartheid regime.

Actually, Barak is abysmally ignorant of the real history of the era as corrected by Polakow-Suraksy, who argues that the critics:

…Fail to acknowledge Goldstone’s crucial role in facilitating South Africa’s transition to democracy by chairing the investigative Commission on Public Violence and Intimidation from 1991-1994. Among other things, this commission exposed the apartheid government’s links to a so-called Third Force–made up of government security and ex-security operatives seeking to derail peaceful democratic elections.

The Goldstone Commission’s revelations outraged Nelson Mandela, leading him to conclude that F.W. de Klerk’s government had organized covert death squads…Goldstone’s work earned him Mandela’s respect and, in 1994, South Africa’s first black president appointed Goldstone to the Constitutional Court…

Further, it was Goldstone’s landmark ruling that overturned the Homelands policy that was a bulwark of the apartheid system. Amazing how an ignorant journalist with an axe to grind can reduce history to a steaming heap of rubble.

U.S. Federal Judge Thelton Henderson went to South Africa in the 1980s and according to a close friend of his who wrote me, discovered this about Judge Richard Goldstone:

Thelton first went to South Africa in the 1980s. In fact, being African-American, he was detained there and endured a very unpleasant experience. He will tell you about black leaders repeatedly telling him there were three good judges in the country, and the best of the three was a remarkable man, Richard Goldstone. In addition to being regarded for his fairness and justice in the courtroom, he was known by prisoners for his regular visits to the prisons. He went regularly because he was concerned about their being tortured and about their not getting medical care. (Another friend has told me about this aspect of Richard and that some black prisoners felt he literally saved their lives as a result of his visits to prisons.)

This is the very same judge who “sided through and through” with the apartheid regime. Shameful.

And then you have the outright lies of Alan Dershowitz which Yediot quotes as if they were halacha l’Moshe mi’Sinai:

“Goldstone took a job as an apartheid judge. He allowed dozens of black people who were unfairly tried to be executed,”

How does Dersh know they were “unfairly tried?” Did he do any research into the cases? Or does he argue that anyone sentenced to death under apartheid was tried “unfairly.” And would Dersh concede the same about Palestinian civilians killed by the IDF during the Gaza war? No, of course he wouldn’t. That’s his double-standard. He can denounce the sins of apartheid with clean hands and a clear conscience. But he refuses to acknowledge any sins of Occupation.

Dersh then goes on to quote his infamous comparison of Goldstone to Mengele, which I’ve eviscerated in a previous post:

“You know, a lot of people say we just followed the law, German judges… That’s what Mengele said too. That was Mengele’s defense and that was what everybody said in Nazi Germany. ‘We just followed the law.’ When you are in an apartheid country like South Africa, you don’t follow the law,” Dershowitz added.

I pointed out in that post that Mengele never mounted such a defense because he was never prosecuted for his crimes.

Here Dershowitz also uses a rhetorical smearing technique he accuses the far left of using against Israel: the Nazi charge. When you want to pull out all the stops and prove you have absolutely no sense of historical proportion liken your opponent or the regime your opponent supports to Nazis.

Was apartheid evil? Certainly. Was it worthy of comparison to Nazis? I don’t know. Perhaps as worthy as comparing Israel to Nazis. If you’re uncomfortable with the abuse of one historical analogy you should be uncomfortable with the other. Did South Africa commit genocide against Blacks? I don’t think so. Crimes yes. Injustice yes. But genocide?

Personally, I think someone ought to give Alan Dershowitz a Valium and get him to calm down a bit. He really does a grave disservice to his side every time he opens his mouth.

Both Barak and the Israel foreign ministry make a telling admission in this quotation from a ministry statement about the Yediot report (and this is why I believe this is an orchestrated government sponsored campaign):

A Foreign Ministry official referred to the investigation as “explosive PR material”

“PR material?” Really. Is that what working in the Israeli foreign ministry has become? PR flackery? Hasbara? Is that what this campaign against Goldstone is all about? Two-bit fakery?

The Yediot story quotes Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin making this specious claim against the South African jurist:

“Such a person should not be allowed to lecture a democratic state defending itself against terrorists, who are not subject to the criteria of international moral norms…”

The actual truth of the matter is that Goldstone did not quarrel with Israel’s right to defend itself or respond to the rocket attacks by Palestinian “terrorists,” which he conceded might be war crimes.  What he DID concern himself with was the Israeli attacks which killed 1,100 civilians, 300 of them children.

The enormous contribution that Polakow-Surasky makes to this debate is his revelation of the deep ties between Israel and apartheid era South Africa.  I’m just beginning to read his new book, The Unspoken Alliance.  It uncovers the hitherto secret dealings between the two nations which brought much-needed cash to Israel in return for nuclear weapons technology and advanced weapons systems which South Africa used in its wars in Namibia and Angola.  In fact, Israel was the apartheid nation’s primary arms supplier ($1.5 billion worth in 1988 alone) and violated international sanctions to do so.  South Africa was Israel’s single largest customer for military exports.  Overall, the former country was Israel’s second or third largest trading partner after the U.S.  And this during a period when there were strict international sanctions in place to prevent precisely such trade.

In 1980, the UN voted for an oil embargo against South Africa much as Israel is urging the world body to do against Iran.  Where was the Israeli representative at the time?  Absent.  Is that how Israel showed its opposition to apartheid?  By failing to cast its vote when it had a chance?

So what you have is a current Israeli government hypocritically complaining about the alleged collaboration of one South African Jewish judge with a system which the entire Israeli military establishment at the same time was propping up with all the might at its disposal.  Who committed the worse sin?  Richard Goldstone or the State of Israel?  Was it worse for Goldstone to allow blacks to be sent to their execution or that Israel expedited South Africa’s development of a nuclear weapon?

We complain about the threat of nuclear proliferation if Iran gets a nuclear bomb.  We complain about Pakistani scientists giving WMD secrets to North Korea?  What about Israeli’s role in exporting such nuclear technology to South Africa?  We complain that Russia and China aren’t willing to coöperate with punishing sanctions against the Iranian regime to prevent it from getting nuclear weapons.  What about Israel’s own surreptitious violation of similar sanctions?

And what is Israel’s defense for its actions then?  We had few friends.  It was a relationship of convenience.  We had something they needed and vice versa.  We did what we had to do.  And is Israel’s excuse much different or superior to Goldstone’s own defense of his actions?
