Shalit Moved to Egypt?

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

I preface this post with the caveat that everything reported here is from Arab and Israeli media sources which are not always fully reliable and vetted.  Even so, if there is any truth in the reports they are worth noting.

Haaretz says that a Kuwaiti newspaper is reporting that Gilad Shalit has been secretly moved by Hamas to Egypt as part of the initial stages of a prisoner exchange.  He was accompanied by two high-ranking Hamas operatives.  What puzzles me about this if it’s true is, why Hamas would take such a critical step given that there is not yet complete agreement with the Israelis on who and how many will be released.  I would’ve thought that Hamas would want to wait to take such a dramatic step until all its ducks were in a row.

Charles Johnson, Political Baal Teshuva?

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

By God, there’s something strange going on over at Little Green Footballs.  Charles Johnson, after a long period involving huge amounts of turmoil and combat among his Lizard followers, has turned away from his far-right Islamophobic rantings and penned an amazing post, Why I Parted Ways With The Right.  If I didn’t know better, it might be likened to political teshuva.  Here are his reasons:

1. Support for fascists, both in America (see: Pat Buchanan, Robert Stacy McCain, etc.) and in Europe (see: Vlaams Belang, BNP, SIOE, Pat Buchanan, etc.)

2. Support for bigotry, hatred, and white supremacism (see: Pat Buchanan, Ann Coulter, Robert Stacy McCain, Lew Rockwell, etc.)

3. Support for throwing women back into the Dark Ages, and general religious fanaticism (see: Operation Rescue, anti-abortion groups, James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Tony Perkins, the entire religious right, etc.)

4. Support for anti-science bad craziness (see: creationism, climate change denialism, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, James Inhofe, etc.)

5. Support for homophobic bigotry (see: Sarah Palin, Dobson, the entire religious right, etc.)

6. Support for anti-government lunacy (see: tea parties, militias, Fox News, Glenn Beck, etc.)

7. Support for conspiracy theories and hate speech (see: Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Birthers, creationists, climate deniers, etc.)

8. A right-wing blogosphere that is almost universally dominated by raging hate speech (see: Hot Air, Free Republic, Ace of Spades, etc.)

9. Anti-Islamic bigotry that goes far beyond simply criticizing radical Islam, into support for fascism, violence, and genocide (see: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, etc.)

10. Hatred for President Obama that goes far beyond simply criticizing his policies, into racism, hate speech, and bizarre conspiracy theories (see: witch doctor pictures, tea parties, Birthers, Michelle Malkin, Fox News, World Net Daily, Newsmax, and every other right wing source)

And much, much more. The American right wing has gone off the rails, into the bushes, and off the cliff.

I won’t be going over the cliff with them.

Frankly, I’m so astonished I don’t know what to say.  But one thing Jewish tradition tells us is that if someone’s repentance is sincere you have no right to question it or doubt the penitent’s sincerity.  And I don’t.  I don’t want to make too much out of this but to me this is something akin to Saul’s conversion at Tarshish.  Charles Johnson was the epitome of the pro-Israel neocon.  He could always be counted on to bash Islam and Arabs.  He’s even smeared me one or two times.  I saw him not as the intellectual leader of the movement, but more as the tough drill sergeant fighting the good neocon fight in the trenches.

Now Johnson calls himself an “independent.”  That’s all right by me.  I’d rather have him as an independent than a neocon.  But what does it all mean?  Of course, you can see in Johnson’s turning (the original meaning of the word teshuva) a statement about the meltdown occurring within the Republican Party amidst internecine warfare between the right and the farther right.  Those like Johnson who’ve retained a certain amount of reason and common sense have come to a parting of the ways with the incipient insanity.  That’s the way the [little green foot]ball bounces.

I think it also signifies the end of the War on Terror and the Bush national security agenda.  People like Johnson are beginning to understand that the 9/11 era is over and our country is returning to a more normal set of political priorities.  While this by no means that Obama’s political agenda will succeed (though it can’t hurt that neocons are deserting the sinking ship), it does mean that the ranks of the far right are thinning.

“So may it be His will.”

For an even more powerful indictment of the Republican right from a former fellow traveler, read this by Andrew Sullivan.  For a more cynical and funny critique of Johnson’s conversion by someone who detests him read Dennis the Peasant.

Hey, is it too much to ask that a few Zionist liberals like the Goldberg boys, Jeffrey and J.J., and Tom Friedman will have a reverse-Benny Morris-like change of heart, abandon their own political and moral infirmities, and come on over to our side?

Your U.S. Tax Dollars Support IDF Insurrection

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

'Shimshon will not evict Homesh' Pro-settler IDF refusers earned 20,000 shekels for this stunt (Daniel Bar On)

That may seem an outlandish headline but let me finish: I’ve written here several times about Israel’s most popular Chabad rabbi, Dov Wolpe.  The man is one of the most despicable representatives of the rabbinic class I’ve come across.  He offers money to IDF soldiers to disobey orders to evacuate settlements.  Wolpe’s Israeli organization is SOS-Israel.  Akiva Eldar reports in Haaretz that the American Jewish group, Machanaim, funnels money to Wolpe from donors here in the States:

The Task Force to Save the Nation and the Land [aka SOS Israel]…offered every soldier refusing to evacuate a settlement, and the Kfir Brigade soldiers who publicly demonstrated their opposition to evacuation, NIS 1,000 for every day they spend in military prison…

The group receives donations from a U.S. based group that are tax exempt…

Among the rewards it has given was NIS 20,000 to each soldier who lifted a sign of “The Shimshon Battalion does not evict from Homesh” at the Western Wall a month ago, and gave NIS 1,800 to the soldier Tzach Kortz, who shot a terrorist in Kiryat Arba last week.

As Machanaim is a 501c3 group that means that you and I are subsidizing insurrection in the IDF.  And that 20,000 shekel payoff to Shimshon Brigade members to unfurl that despicable banner before the Kotel–well, that’s your and my tax dollars at work.

It cannot be that the IRS and federal government intend American Jews and U.S. taxpayers to support policies in direct contravention to both Israeli and U.S. policies concerning the settlements and receive a tax benefit in doing so.  Further, I’ve examined Machanaim’s IRS reporting and they don’t even file the required 990 forms, claiming that they are exempt as a “church.”  Now, it may be that churches do not have to file (I’m not an expert on non-profit tax law), but I would dispute any claim that this group is a church.  If they’re contributing to Wolpe they have to be filing 990s.

If anyone among my readers knows of an attorney who is an expert on non-profit and IRS regulations governing them, I really could use a legal expert to help pursue cases like this.  I find that the IRS either does not investigate citizen complaints or doesn’t inform a complainant about the adjudication of a complaint, which leaves you in the dark about whether you have had any success in your efforts.

The inestimable Didi Remez notes that the execrable NGO Monitor is sponsoring a Knesset conference meant to bash Israeli human rights NGOs for their alleged lack of transparency.  Prof. Gerald Steinberg is ‘shocked, I say shocked’–because groups like B’Tselem and Breaking the Silence actually do work judged important enough that it is supported by the EU and its member states.  This somehow is a grievous violation of Israeli sovereignty in much the same way that the ayatollahs and Putins of the world rail against George Soros and the Open Society Institute because it supports democracy and other such values presumably alien to such countries.  Why Steinberg’s rhetoric should so closely resemble that of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Vladimir Putin is a question worth pondering.

At any rate, the Hebrew version of the Haaretz article questions whether NGO Monitor will also be examining the funding of SOS Israel to determine why foreign organizations like Machanaim are supporting it.  What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right?  Apparently not in this case.  NGO Monitor actually only cares about poking a stick at progressive Israeli NGOs.  Right-wing NGOs are kosher and need no hashgacha (kashrut supervision).

Clemmons Killed, Relatives Arrested as Accomplices

Police surround ambulance containing Clemmons' body (Joshua Trujillo/Seattle PI)

Apparently, Maurice Clemmons was right about one thing he wrote in his petition to Gov. Mike Huckabee asking for commutation of his prison sentence.  He did have a close knit circle of family, friends (and fellow ex-cons) who would “support” him on his release.  The only problem is that this circle was also willing to act as accomplices in helping him evade capture which is why it took 48 hours before he was found and killed early this morning by a lone Seattle police officer during a routine traffic stop.

The policeman found a car idling on a South Seattle street and noted it had been stolen shortly earlier.  While filling out the paperwork, he noticed a man approaching from his side of the car.  The cop exited his car, immediately recognized Clemmons and told him to put his hands up.  When the suspected police killer backed away from him and reached in his waist the police officer shot him, hitting him twice and killing him.

None of this is particularly revelatory (though scenes like this are exceedingly rare in Seattle).  But what does disturb many here is that there was a network which aided and abetted Clemmons in eluding capture.  The Seattle Times reports that they provided him with getaway cars, money, cellphones and were arranging for him to escape the state when he was killed.  His sister attempted to treat his stomach wound.  Three people are in custody and will likely be charged with crimes and at least one or more others are being sought.  I also heard a report that some of these people deliberately lied to police about the convict’s whereabouts.

EU to Recognize East Jerusalem as Palestinian Capital

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

This is potentially big news.  Haaretz reports that Sweden is leading a drive within the EU to recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.  The statement, expected next week, would also announce that the EU will recognize the unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state should the PA go that route:

The document expressed the EU’s concern over the stalemate in the peace process and calls for the immediate renewal of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in accordance with a prescribed timetable. The goal, it states, is “an independent, democratic, contiguous and viable state of Palestine, comprising the West Bank and Gaza and with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

The draft refers directly to the situation in East Jerusalem, calling on “all parties to refrain from provocative actions” and stating the EU Council “has never recognized the annexation of East Jerusalem. If there is to be a genuine peace, a way must be found to resolve the status of Jerusalem as capital of two states. The Council calls for the reopening of Palestinian institutions in Jerusalem in accordance with the road map. It also calls on the Israeli government to cease all discriminatory treatment of Palestinians in East Jerusalem.”

…On the issue of borders, the document states that the EU will not accept any changes made by Israel to the 1967 borders unless they have PA approval. The EU, it says, welcomes PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s proposal of a unilateral declaration of statehood and would “be able, at the appropriate time, to recognize a Palestinian state.”

And to give you some idea of the hopelessness of the Israeli foreign ministry under Avigdor Lieberman, here is its response, which I guess is supposed to make the EU shiver in its boots:

Senior Foreign Ministry officials said the belief is widespread across the foreign policy echelon that Sweden is advancing an explicitly “anti-Israel” line, rendering Europe “irrelevant” to the peace process.

Translation: Lieberman is pissed as hell at those Arab-loving Swedish cock suckers.

I’m presuming that the EU has at least consulted with Pres. Obama on this and would not go forward so boldly without at least tacit encouragement from the U.S.  Let’s wait and see whether he makes any public statement.  It’s doubtful he would say anything positive.  But if the EU is going it alone then he might criticize the EU initiative.  Somehow I think we won’t hear anything out of Washington and that Obama sees this as a trial balloon for a potential partnership with the EU regarding which the U.S. can join at a later date.

Maurice Clemmons' commutation petition

Mike Huckabee has some explaining to do.  He commuted Maurice Clemmons 95-year prison sentence after the man petitioned for reconsideration of his case.  Clemmons’ letter was, in retrospect masterfully manipulative and catered to Huckabee’s homespun belief in Christian values and the notion of repentance and redemption from sin.  In other words, Clemmons played Huckabee for a fool, using every cliché in the book:

I come from a very good Christian family and I was raised much better than my actions speak.  (I’m still ashamed to this day for the shame my stupid involvement in these crimes brought upon my family name.)

He also asks for mercy:

Since that [parole] hearing the angel of death has visited and taken away my dear sweet mother and this more than anything has effected change for the good in my heart.  Because now I have to live with all that I put her through I wasn’t able to be with her and make her proud of me before she passed.

I’ve never done anything good for God but I’ve prayed for him to grant me in his compassion the grace for a start…

I think my institutional adjustment has been exemplary…and the ends of justice have been achieved because I am no longer the same misguided youth I was  11 years ago.  I know I can, if given the opportunity lead a productive life in society.

…God bless You for Your time and consideration.  It is so prayed.

I have no problem that Mike Huckabee commuted sentences of three times as many prisoners as the three previous governors.  I have a problem with the fact that he introduced purely religious considerations into the commutation process substituting Christian dogma for good, hard-heated penal-oriented evaluation.  The governor wanted to believe that these prisoners could change through faith in Jesus or whatever.  But he did so in cases like this with almost no other evidence to back up such faith.  That was his mistake.

And the reason this is relevant to his presidential aspirations is that there is no reason to assume he won’t use the same considerations in formulating national policy.  Just look at his rabid support for the most extreme of settler groups, which follows his Christian Zionist principles that the Jews shouldn’t give up a single inch of divinely bestowed land to the Palestinians.  I don’t want a preacher or evangelist in the White House.  I want a president.

In the Comment is Free piece published today I forgot to mention the clear connections to Willie Horton.  Let this be a political cross that Mike Huckabee has to bear going into the 2012 primary race.

Huckabee is clearly attempting to do damage control with his statement released today which blamed errors of the “Washington State and Arkansas criminal justice systems.”  What he omits of course is that the governor is also a partner in that system.  In his case, he provided the signature on the commutation.  That’s his error.  He wants you to forget that in a blizzard of finger-pointing.

Don’t good Christians believe in accepting responsibility for their actions and their mistakes?  When will you do that, Mike?  There are four police officers dead and nine children without fathers or mother.  Don’t they deserve better from you?  Or is a pro forma statement preserving your political ass the best you can do.

On a related subject, Seattle police have accused family and friends of Clemmons of aiding him in his escape and possibly misleading police about his whereabouts.  Several individuals have been taken into custody and may be charged with violations.  This is a massive manhunt costing the taxpayers millions of dollars and wasting resources and diverting police from their normal job of protecting the city.  And Clemmons’ accomplices are acting like fools.  Does this sound like the good Christian family the convict boasted about in his petition to Gov. Huckabee?

But lest anyone think there’s no more blame to go around, get a load of this comedy of errors between Arkansas and Washington State prosecutors which reminds me of the Keystone Cops.
