Bogie Yaalon’s Excellent Adventure with Feiglin, Kahane Kids

Monday, August 17th, 2009

A journalist friend of mine attended a recent lecture by Bogie Yaalon, former IDF chief of staff and Likud minister in the current Israeli government. Nothing unusual in that. He was introduced by Moshe Feiglin, one of the most extreme pro-settler leaders and a fellow Likudnik. That’s a bit odd but still nothing terribly out of the ordinary.

In order to attend this Likudnik soiree my friend had to call a local activist to RSVP (for all I know he may’ve had to provide the password: “Never again!”), who happened to be Nitza Kahane, Meir Kahane’s daughter-in-law.  When he called, the phone was answered by Meir Kahane–no not THAT Meir Kahane, the great man’s grandson.  Now that IS interesting.

Peace Now anti-Bibi banner: "In Jerusalem, I established a bi-national state!"

Here’s what my friend had to say:

I met Nitza, and Meir jr. – respectable looking, very determined people.

In other words, not a bearded right-wing prophet with a messianic zeal in his eyes like grandpa Meir.  Nice people.  The kind you could bring home to meet bubbe and zeideh.  Imagine what all this means: that had Meir Kahane lived he would not be in herem, he would be a minister in the current government.  It means the Likud has been willingly taken over by the pro-settler extreme right.

Baruch Marzel's message to U.S., Obama, and moderate American Jews: Drop Dead!

Baruch Marzel holding banner with message for Obama (whose first name he misspells) and his American Jewish supporters: Drop Dead!

One of Feiglin’s most interesting comments of the night was: Ani lo rotzeh shalom (“I don’t want peace”).  This means that the Israeli wingnut right doesn’t even want the status quo, they want a war to the death with the Arabs.  Nuclear Armageddon if necessary I imagine.  It is therefore no accident that Mike Huckabee is palling around today with his settler buddies like Irving Moskowitz at the Shepherd Hotel.  The evangelicals and settlers want the same thing: a war to the death against evil which will lead to some kind of messianic age.

We should rememeber that one of Feiglin’s partners in crime is Baruch Marzel, another devout Kahanist.  Here is an image of Marzel at a demonstration at the Shepherd Hotel today.  The banner’s text tells you all you need to know.  For the Israeli extreme right this is a war to the death.  They will take no prisoners.  They will lie, cheat, steal in order to preserve the status quo.  If they could get away with assassinating Barack Hussein Obama, “anti-Semite Jew-hater,” or any Israeli politician who stood in their way they would do so (as they have done in the past).  Accordingly, we must recognize that we are not dealing with rational human beings who can be reasoned with.  They are no different than the anti-abortionists prepared to murder the Dr. George Tillers of this world.  They are on a holy crusade and need no approbation but for God’s.  And God is definitely on their side.

But do we want to ride the bomb down to the target as Slim Pickens’ character does in Dr. Strangelove??  Will we go along for this wild, insane in fact, ride?

If Barack Obama doesn’t maintain the same iron resolve and determination in pursuing his Middle East agenda, then all will be lost.  We must win against these evil people.  If we don’t, then Israel will eventually cease to exist as it currently does.  The first image above illustrates this point.  I love Bibi’s maniacal smile as he talks on his cell phone.  The caption gives you the impression that all of his wild-eyed machinations will end with Israel becoming the very thing he most detests: a bi-national state. Thanks to Sol Salbe for pointing out the sly bit of historical Zionist irony in it. The caption twists the original quotation from Theodore Herzl who, on returning from the first World Zionist Congress in 1897, wrote in his diary: In Basel, I founded the Jewish state.” What delicious irony!

Huckabee: broadcasting his FoxNews show live from liberated Jerusalem's Shepherd Hotel

Huckabee to broadcast his FoxNews show live from 'liberated' Jerusalem's Shepherd Hotel

If Mike Huckabee ever becomes president of the United States (heaven forfend!) we may have the first ever alumnus of the Hilltop Youth as U.S. ambassador to Israel.  Or better yet, as U.S. secretary of state!  All this by way of saying that a friendly journalist has graciously shared with me the travel schedule for the former Republican presidential candidate’s upcoming visit to Israel:

Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee will visit Israel next week (August 17-19) to underscore his support for a united Jerusalem and for the right of Jews to live and build in Judea and Samaria.

His trip is sponsored by a settler wingnut outfit called the Jewish Reclamation Project, which is a front group for Ateret Hacohanim,** a U.S. registered non-profit which raises an average of $2 million each year used to displace Arab residents of Jerusalem and replace them with pro-settler Jewish fanatics:

His visit to Israel is hosted by The Jerusalem Reclamation Project and its Chairman, Dr. Joseph Frager.  NY State Assemblyman Dov Hikind, will join also join the popular columnist and Fox News host.

ateret logo
Ateret is also handsomely supported by U.S. bingo king and settler financier, Irving Moskowitz.  Hikind is a former leader of the Jewish Defense League, who now represents some of the most rabidly pro-settler ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in Brooklyn.  His wife, Shoshana happens to also be Ateret Cohanim’s U.S. fundraiser (surprise, surprise).

What I find extraordinary is that Huckabee is spending almost all his time visiting settlements.  And not just any settlements, he’s going into the heart of the most extreme of the settler extremists meeting with the Gush Katif dissidents and Hebron settlers (who produced Baruch Goldstein, among other Jewish gifts to humanity).  Keep in mind, these Gush Katifniks were diametrically opposed not to the policy of the U.S. government, but to policy of their own democratically elected ISRAELI government.  And they didn’t express their opposition by petitioning or demonstrating, they expressed it through acts of violence and mayhem.  This is who Mike Huckabee chooses to spend time with when he visits the Holy Land.  Read it and weep:

MONDAY, Aug. 17:

• Visit to City of David
• Maaleh HaZeitim
• Kidmat Zion (Abu Dis) – site of a future Jewish neighborhood:

TUESDAY, Aug. 18:

• Atarot and the Security Fence around Jerusalem
• Maaleh Adumim and the controversial E1 area
• Visit to Givat HaYovel, a neighborhood designated as an “illegal outpost” and slated for dismantling by the Israeli government…

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 19:

• Visit and briefing by Gush Katif evacuees
• Hebron

Huckabee (in highway patrol shades) and Hikind with minor Muslim curiousity (Al Aqsa Mosque) in background (Menachem Kahane/AFP)

This schedule neglects to mention Huckabee’s attendance at a Sunday evening gala fundraising event at Irving Moskowitz’s Shepherd Hotel.  During his visit to the disputed site, he will broadcast his FOXNews show live from the heart of “liberated” Arab-rein East Jerusalem.  Moskowitz and the city of Jerusalem plan to begin the process of removing Arab residents of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood by turning the historic Palestinian landmark into a major new settler residential project.

The Obama administration has specifically warned the Netanyahu government that this project is an incendiary one that it vehemently opposes.  Is this the image Huckabee really wants to project?  That he supports those who wish to see a race war between Israelis and Palestinians to the death?  That he so detests the current president and his policy that he’s willing to sink up to his ankles in the swamp muck that these extremists live and breath?

If I were Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign manager I’d be chortling with glee at the opportunity to run against this guy.

Huckabee could become the leader of our country (I know it’s highly unlikely but still remotely possible).  He might be interested in visiting the economic hub of Israel, Tel Aviv.  He might be interested in visiting with the U.S. ambassador while he’s here or Israeli government leaders.  There is absolutely no indication he or his handlers are interested in any of this from his schedule.  It’s all settlers all the time.

It’s one thing to be an Eric Cantor and make vague murmurings about Obama’s Israel policy being insufficiently supportive of Israel.  That at least presents a vaguely legitimate political argument.  But Huckabee is off in wingnut land.  He’ll probably be holding hands with Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein and John Hagee and praying for the End Times over the fields of Armageddon.  Scary stuff folks.  Republicans, if there are any of you out there, do something to avoid making your Party the laughingstock of the democratic world.

Frankly, I don’t know which is worse Huckabee or Palin.  If one of them is nominated Obama will easily win a second term.  Contrary to what some might believe, I actually believe it’s a good idea to have a two party system in this country (though I never have voted for a Republican).  To think that this Party is sentencing itself to years if not decades in the political wilderness through the embrace of such lunatics is sad in the extreme.

Comment Filter Issues

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

I’ve come to realize that the most noxious comments I seem to be receiving are being sent through proxy servers, which allow the commenter to hide their true IP address and so avoid identification.  The spam filter I use allows me to prevent commenters using proxy servers from publishing comments.  I have now turned this feature on.  It will not end the problem, but it will deny trolls and cyber bullies one more tool from their arsenal of deceit.

The only problem is that WP Spamfree, the filter I use, while generally a good product, has a history of false positives and preventing some legitimate commenters from publishing here.  It is possible that adding this new level of protection will increase the number of false positives.  In particular, commenters who attempt to add hyperlinks to their comments are often prevented from publishing.  I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused or may cause any of you.  If any of your comments are ever filtered in error please let me know via the Contact link in my sidebar.  If you retain a copy of the actual comment forward it to me and I will publish it in your name for you.

From the Annals of Pro-Israel PR Flackery

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

I just received this e-mail from Gerald Steinberg’s NGO Monitor, one of Israel’s most virulent anti-Arab groups.  The insincerity and utter ignorance displayed actually tickled me, including the reference to being a “fan” of Tikun Olam.  If he’s a fan of my blog then he certainly hasn’t been reading my own attacks on his group and his boss:

Hi,

My name is David Sterling.  I work at NGO Monitor.  We are a small Jerusalem based research organization.  NGO Monitor’s work focuses on the role of Human Rights NGO’s and their involvement in the Arab-Israeli conflict.  I am a fan of Tikun Olam and I think you might find some of our research informative and useful in relation to your work.  I encourage you to visit our website www.ngo-monitor.org.  If our work is of interest to you please send me your email address and I will make certain to put you on our press/report release list.

Thanks for your time.

StandWithUs Director Says I Need “Help,” Claims I Fabricated Blog Comment in SWU’s Name

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

I have been in a long-running political fracas with the hardline pro-Israel advocacy group, StandWithUs, and its Northwest director, Rob Jacobs.  Recently, I received a blog comment from someone calling himself “swustaff:”

swu smear comment

I wrote to Jacobs suggesting that he examine the IP addresses of StandWithUs supporters and members to discover whether someone affiliated with the group (the IP is located in Dallas, TX) might be sending this sort of disgusting smut.  [UPDATE: a reader has discovered that this IP is a proxy, which is entirely unsurprising.  Such cowards would certainly wish to cover their tracks so they cannot be identified.]  I doubt anyone on SWU staff would be stupid enough to send this but you should never underestimate the stupidity of people who write crap like this.  Jacobs’ of course, falsely charges that I claimed that the comment actually came from a member of the SWU staff.    I did not (though of course I would’ve liked for him to definitely rule this out).  I decided I would forward the comment to Rob and allow him to try to deal with it internally if he chose.  I deliberately decided not to circulate the comment to the Jewish federation, which maintains extremely close relations with StandWithUs.

So how did Rob repay me?  First, he accuses me of writing the comment myself.  Yes, that’s right, in the world according to Rob I’m the new Tawana Brawley of Seattle’s Jewish community.  Then he accuses me of “needing help” and “intervention.”  This is how the pro-Israel right chooses to deal with the lunatics in THEIR midst who appropriate their organizational name to smear Jewish progressives.  They accuse the victim of being the lunatic and this somehow washes their hands of the problem.  This is Rob’s e mail to me:

Stop making these things [blog comments] up and get some therapy.

[Someone should] try to help Richard before he really hurts himself and others….When all of a sudden, out of nowhere and without precedent, from three different sources, nearly simultaneous sets of obscene messages tending to focus on his genitals shows [sic] up apparently coming from false email addresses that all have some vague similarity to individuals or groups that he’s recently attacked on his blog . . . that’s not a coincidence, it’s a problem that, as friends or acquaintances of Richards, deserves some kind of intervention.

First, the comments did not start “all of a sudden.”  I’ve been receiving similar comments since I began writing the blog.  Second, they don’t come from “out of nowhere.”  I’ve criticized StandWithUs, Rob Jacobs and David Brumer (a local board member) for their behavior during a recent local Jewish federation fracas in which a local Jewish progressive group was attacked for hosting a talk by Palestinian anti-Occupation cleric, Naim Ateek.  The abusive comments follow directly on these posts.

What “proof” does Rob produce to support his claim?  Recently, another commenter appropriated the name of Z Street, another loopy pro-Israel advocacy group which I’ve criticized, and tried to publish this comment here:

Z Street
[email protected]

Submitted on 2009/08/05 at 7:04am

We at Z Street are offering for sale Richard Silverstein’s foreskin with his penis still attached. It is our way of saying thanks to all those who support our now campaign against treason and self-hatred.”

Jerry Gordon of Israpundit, a real Sherlock Holmes of pro-Israel extremist blogging, claims that the e mail address used in this fraudulent smear comment is located in Redmond, WA.  Frankly, I’ve never heard of being able to associate an e-mail address with a geographical location, though this site Gordon dreamed up claims it can do this. [UPDATE: A reader below has discovered that what this website actually tells you is the geographical location of the domain registrant, NOT the owner of the e mail address.  Nice try Jerry, you've made the brilliant discovery that Microsoft, which owns Hotmail, is located in Redmond, WA.  Unlike you, most of the rest of the world already knew this.]

I live in Seattle, WA. nearly 20 miles from Redmond.  I’ve never lived or worked in Redmond nor does anyone in my family, nor do I have any friends or acquaintances from that town, nor do I ever visit it for business or any other reason.  But somehow all this means that the e mail address is mine and hence I wrote the above comment.  And to cap it all off, I entered my own e mail address into this supposed service and it claims I am located in Aurora, IL!  Maybe Rob might want to rethink reliance on this as evidence.  Unfortunately for our little detectives they didn’t bother to look up the IP address associated with this comment.  It is located in Seacaucus, N.J., quite a long way from Redmond or Seattle.

What these two geniuses, Jacobs and Gordon neglect to understand is that any commenter can invent any e mail address they wish when they publish a comment.  An e mail address is an indicator or proof of precisely nothing.

Further, if Jacobs really believes I’ve slandered StandWithUs by inventing these comments, he must present real evidence.  If he does not, then he’s taking the cheap way out.  You smear someone, but don’t have the courage of your convictions to back it up.  I doubt Jacobs would want to defend a tissue of lies in court.  But if he does, then have at it.

There are real issues which Jacobs is obfuscating beneath a blizzard of scummy insinuations and claims.  That is, why would anyone of the pro-Israel right feel the need to smear me in the name of Z Street, StandWithUs or David Brumer?  Could it be that the smears, lies and hatred which they’ve disseminated against me have impacted someone already mentally unstable and goaded them to get in on the act?  Unfortunately, Jacobs’ response is not only that he has no responsibility for this, but that it’s something I’ve invented in my head.  This tells you a great deal about the quality of leadership offered by StandWithUs.

If SWU was a fringe group in our local community I would chalk all this up to wingnut behavior.  But it is a mainstream player looked to by the leadership of the community as “experts” on the Israeli-Arab conflict.  But after this, how can the Jewish community look at SWU with a straight face and continue to claim it deserves the respect of Seattle’s Jews?  Actually, it is Rob Jacobs and SWU that requires the intervention of the local Jewish community.  But that apparently won’t happen anytime soon as the group is quite useful in promoting the community’s pro-Israel agenda.  The marriage between the Jewish federation and SWU is apparently quite convenient for both parties.

One final laugher from Jacobs:

…So far I have never been anything but respectful toward you…

If lying about my views, claiming I need “help” and “intervention” and that I falsely concocted blog comments designed to smear SWU (while an SWU board member accused me of being “deranged” and being “fascinated” with gay porno) is “respectful” then I’d hate to find out what Rob considers disrespectful.

Tom Friedman: Consultant to IDF General Staff

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Now here I thought Tom “Terrific” Friedman was the Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist for the N.Y. Times.  Little did I know he’s carrying on a nice little consulting business on the side giving lectures to members of the IDF general staff and passing on intelligence information to them he gleaned from visits to Arab states:

…Friedman gave a lecture last week to a number of members of the IDF General Staff. He spoke to them about his impressions of his recent visits to Arab countries.

Friedman visited Israel and the territories last week and published a two-part column on the situation in the territories after most IDF checkpoints were removed and Palestinian security forces moved in.

Friedman met personally with IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi during his visit, and spoke to the deputy chief of staff, the head of Military Intelligence, the head of the Home Front Command and the head of the planning branch.

Nice work if you can get it, Tom.  Helena Cobban summed it up best I think:

Someone tell me why anyone should consider this guy a “neutral observer” of matters Middle Eastern?  Someone tell me whether him behaving like this is quite okay by the New York Times– sort of par for the course for the way they expect their very handsomely [paid] columnists to behave?

Someone tell me why anyone in the rest of the Middle East would even agree to meet with this guy, given that he sees his role as being a snoop for the Israeli generals?

Clark Hoyt, the NY Times ombundsman, and Friedman’s editors should explain to his readers how this doesn’t violate the paper’s ethics rules.  How should this guy be allowed to write a word about Israel’s relations with the Arab world when he is entirely compromised on that score?  If you want to make your own feelings know, send an e mail.

Helena also correctly notes the egregious error in the Haaretz article which claims “most” IDF checkpoints were removed from the West Bank.  SOME checkpoints were removed, not “most.”

Returning to Friedman…Tom has fallen very far from earlier in his career when he actually had something interesting to say about Israel once in a while. But that was before his ego swelled to the size of an overripe watermelon (I’m really doing the watermelon an injustice here).  It is sad how whatever promise he once had has dissipated.  But I guess someone’s got to pay the mortgage on that $9-million home he owns in suburban Maryland:

As the July edition of the Washingtonian Magazine notes, Friedman lives in “a palatial 11,400-square-foot house, now valued at $9.3 million, on a 7½-acre parcel just blocks from I-495 and Bethesda Country Club.” He “married into one of the 100 richest families in the country” – the Bucksbaums, whose real-estate Empire is valued at $2.7 billion.

So OK, that was from 2006 and his manse is only worth $5 million (a guess) and the Bucksbaum fortune (if they weren’t tight with Bernie Madoff) is down to a paltry $1 or $2 billion.  The point is that with all that money Tom is now coasting through life and a journalism career, phoning it in for his adoring readers and editors.  Now, everyone should know he’s little more than a shill for the IDF general staff and the hasbara crowd.  Yes, he’s a cut above the rest with a bit more class and intelligence.  But there’s very little difference between a con man and a smart con man.  They just wear better suits, use bigger words, and go to better colleges.

You’re going to have to trust me that once (a long time ago) Tom Friedman stood for something and had something to say.  No longer.

Human Rights Watch Accuses IDF of ‘Stonewalling’ on White Flag Murders

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

During the Gaza war, Israel killed 1,400 Gazans of whom 1,100 were civilians.  The latter were killed in varied ways, some by accident, some by negligence, and some in cold blood.  Human Rights Watch released a stinging rebuke of the IDF’s “investigation” of so-called “white flag” deaths in which soldiers murdered civilians displaying white flags who were in uncontested areas where there was no fighting:

During Israel’s recent Gaza offensive, Israeli soldiers unlawfully shot and killed 11 Palestinian civilians, including five women and four children, who were in groups waving white flags to convey their civilian status, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today…

The 63-page report, “White Flag Deaths: Killings of Palestinian Civilians during Operation Cast Lead,” is based on field investigations of seven incident sites in Gaza, including ballistic evidence found at the scene, medical records of victims, and lengthy interviews with multiple witnesses – at least three people separately for each incident.

…In one case documented in the report, on January 7 in eastern Jabalya, two women and three children from the family of Khalid ‘Abd Rabbo were standing in front of their home after an Israeli soldier ordered them outside – at least three of them holding pieces of white cloth – when a soldier near a tank opened fire, killing two girls, ages 2 and 7, and wounding the third girl and their grandmother.

“We spent seven to nine minutes waving the flags, and our faces were looking at them [the soldiers],” said the grandmother, who was shot twice. “And suddenly they opened fire and the girls fell to the ground.”

Accounts from witnesses, tank tracks, an ammunition box and bullet casings found at the scene, and an examination of the grandmother’s wounds by forensic experts indicate that the Israeli soldier fired upon identifiable and unarmed women and children.

In five of the seven incidents detailed in the report, Israeli soldiers shot at civilians who were walking down the street with white flags, trying to leave the areas of fighting.

On January 13 in the village of Khuza’a, an Israeli soldier shot and killed Rawiya al-Najjar, 47, and wounded her relative, Jasmin al-Najjar, 23. The women were walking in a small group on a straight road during daylight, with Rawiya al-Najjar holding a white flag, following Israeli military orders to leave their neighborhood after it had come under Israeli control. Soldiers had occupied a house 230 meters down the street, but apparently fired no warning shots to deter the group as it approached.

The Israeli army whitewashes these murders because there is simply a culture of impunity with regard to such behavior especially during the Gaza war, where the usual caution was thrown to the winds and Gaza was turned into a pure killing zone.  The IDF is incapable of investigating itself and apparently the Israeli justice system is incapable in any serious way of holding its military accountable for violations of Israeli civil, military or international law.

So let’s call a spade a spade.  There is a very high likelihood that most or all of these killings constitute war crimes for which these personnel and the IDF in general, which refuses to seriously investigate them, will be culpable at some point in the future.  In fact, the Israeli press has published multiple stories indicating that the foreign ministry legal staff is already preparing legal briefs to use in the eventuality of such legal action.  So the question is no longer “if” but “when.”

This is what Zionism has become, at least Zionism as practiced by the frauds who claim its mantle within Israel and the IDF.  I am frankly ashamed to share the term with them.  They are a disagrace to every Jewish, Zionist and human value I know.  Their time will come and they will know justice.

Israel-Palestine Blogs Relauched

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I’m relaunching the Israel Palestine Blogs website.  It is an aggregator of 40+ sites by Israeli and American Jews, Arab-Americans, and others devoted to discussion of the Israeli-Arab conflict and the only such blog resource on the web.

I began it several years ago when there were far fewer ways to read a broad cross-section of such peace blogs in one place.  Since then, RSS readers have come into vogue.  But I still think this format is helpful and relevant.

For some time, the technical aspects of the site didn’t work properly.  But thanks to Jonathan Horniblow, my technical support person, we’ve ironed out the problems, implemented a new theme, and the site works perfectly now.  I hope you will give it a look and visit at your leisure.

I also maintain the Israel-Palestine Forum for progressive discussion of these issues.  I invite anyone looking for a community of like-minded folks to delve into debate check it out.
