Israel, National Security State

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

I had lunch recently with an Israeli fellow blogger who I sometimes consult in my attempts to parse Israeli politics and government policy.  I’d never met him before in person though we’ve been in contact for several years.  We got to talking about the Mossad, Shin Bet and Israeli intelligence matters.  He is a seruvnik who helped found one of the early seruvnik groups.  Almost any effective pro-peace group, he told me, whether Jewish or Arab, is infiltrated by the Shin Bet.  At times the intelligence agency will meet openly with leaders of such groups and tell them that they may protest up to a certain point, but that if they cross a line they will be punished.  At other times, the Shin Bet plants individuals within groups either to divide them from within or else to foment actions which will discredit the group and allow it to be criminalized by the authorities.

My companion also told me that young people are recruited to careers in the Shin Bet or Mossad and consider it a badge of honor.  Such a job is looked on as a great adventure by many.  And every family seems to have at least one member of the extended family working for the intelligence services.  It’s an open secret.

I asked him what was the difference between this and the CIA.  He said the CIA had overt and covert branches.  One could work honorably for an open department within the CIA.  In Israel, the Mossad and Shin Bet are entirely shrouded in secrecy.  There is no such thing as a public face or overt action.  Budget figures are never public information.

This is the price Israel pays for being a national security state, for which citizens sacrifice rights that Americans take for granted.

Lest you think the harm is confined to Israel, intelligence analysts here estimate that Israel has one of the largest and most active intelligence apparatuses in the United States.  Only countries like Russia and China have larger capabilities.

This country is by no means a perfect democracy.  But I breathe more easily knowing there are rights and laws that protect me in ways they do not protect Israeli citizens (Israel has no constitution).  So the next time you hear someone boast about Israel being the “only democracy in the Middle East,” you can fill in what’s missing from that specious claim.

Many Israelis seem prepared to sacrifice their rights for the sake of the supposed security that a strong national security state provides.  But I question whether its an even exchange.  Does it really provide the ironclad security it claims?  And should security shorn of principle become a be-all and end-all of national existence?  Here in the U.S., we’ve experienced eight years of this and thankfully the electorate turned away in revulsion from such an approach.  Would that something like this one day happened in Israel.

Bibi: Two-State Solution ‘Kid’s Stuff’

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Bibi Netanyahu showed yet again what a numbskull he can be in yesterday’s Ynetnews:

“This idea of two states for two peoples is a stupid and childish solution to a very complex problem,” senior members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu staff said on Wednesday as the entourage made its way back to Israel from Washington.

They were determined to emphasize that Israel would continue to build in the larger settlement blocs and Jerusalem despite US President Barack Obama’s resolute opposition.

Senior aide Ron Dermer later clarified that “when I say ‘childish’ I mean the media’s obsession with the two-state plan, the fixation with that idea rather than focusing on the fundamental issues.

Another top advisor had no qualms with explicitly deriding the solution itself as “juvenile.”

You’ve just had your first meeting with the president of the United States.  He has laid out for you his vision of a two-state solution as the recipe for peace in the region.  And no sooner do you hop on a plane to return home, but your senior staff begin snickering behind the president’s back and calling his preferred solution “juvenile” and “childish.”

What’s wrong with this picture?  Do they take Obama for a fool?  Do they really believe they can get away with such utterly stupid and inane comments?

It is the riposte by Bibi’s staff that in reality is juvenile. But I do hope they keep these insults coming if it makes them feel better.  One of these days and it won’t be long–Obama will fix their wagon but good.  He’ll present to them the solution to the conflict and they’ll either accept it or risk being toppled as Yitzhak Shamir was when he tried to cross swords with George H.W. Bush.

You’ll notice that Obama and Clinton have begun repeating a mantra that Bibi will hear much more of over the next few months: a call for a complete settlement freeze.  This isn’t George Bush’s wink and a nod for public consumption.  This is a president who’s as serious as a heart attack and aims to get what he wants.  Bibi can call Obama and his ideas names, but it’s going to come back and bite him when he finally realizes he has no choice but to acquiesce.  May that day come soon.

Lt. Col. Ralph Peters on Journalists: ‘Kill Them All’

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Thanks to Cecilie Surasky for pointing out this gem of neocon war-mongering.

Let me start by saying that one of the sub-specialties of this blog involves featuring the paranoia, delusions and outright mania of the neocon right.  Today, we have one hot sample.  Lt. Col. Ralph Peters, writing at the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, a hard-right pro-Israel national security site, pens  a virtual fever dream of a proto-fascist, anti-democratic screed.

Let me be plain, this man is the enemy.  He hates everything about this country that, to me, makes it worth living in or dying for if necessary.  He is the Buck Turgidsen and Dr. Strangelove of early 21st century America.  If he has his way, we will turn into a military garrison state.  Something little short of ancient Sparta.

Peters begins with the questionable premise that there is a war between radical Islam and the west and that the wild-eyed terrorists are way ahead because they are fearsomely committed to their cause and we are effete wimps.  Here is a sampling of his questionable thinking:

…Collective memory has effectively erased the European-sponsored horrors of the last century; yesteryear’s “unthinkable” events have become, well, unthinkable. As someone born only seven years after the ovens of Auschwitz stopped smoking, I am stunned by the common notion, which prevails despite ample evidence to the contrary, that such horrors are impossible today.

Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo, Darfur, Cambodia…I could go on.  You get my drift.  What universe is this guy living in?  What human being half-aware of the contemporary AND historical record believes that genocide is “unthinkable” today?  What Peters is REALLY complaining about is that we don’t credit the possibility that MUSLIMS want to exterminate us as Nazis exterminated Jews.  And here the answer is, unfortunately for Peters, that yes, most of us don’t believe radical Muslims, even had they the will to do so, actually have the ability to do “the unthinkable.”

That doesn’t mean that we should lull ourselves into complacency on the subject or that we should refuse to monitor anti-western Islamists for the danger they truly represent.  But it DOES mean that we won’t be rounding up American Muslims and placing them in concentration camps as wingnuts like Peters, Daniel Pipes, David Yerushalmi, Michael Ledeen and others would have us do.

Peters betrays a nostalgia for a lost American past, a time out on the frontier when men were men and they knew how to settle their differences with their fists or at the muzzle of a Colt .44 pistol:

…We have become largely a white-collar, suburban society in which a child’s bloody nose is no longer a routine part of growing up, but grounds for a lawsuit; the privileged among us have lost the sense of grit in daily life. We grow up believing that safety from harm is a right that others are bound to respect as we do. Our rising generation of political leaders assumes that, if anyone wishes to do us harm, it must be the result of a misunderstanding that can be resolved by that lethal narcotic of the chattering classes, dialogue.

Betraying more hankering for our grim, murderous “heroic” historic past, Peters betrays his first bit of animus toward contemporary media:

More Americans died in one afternoon at Cold Harbor during our Civil War than died in six years in Iraq. Three times as many American troops fell during the morning of June 6, 1944, as have been lost in combat in over seven years in Afghanistan. Nonetheless, prize-hunting reporters insist that our losses in Iraq have been catastrophic…

Again, I’m not sure what universe Peters lives in.  I’ve read no reporter who’s made such a claim.  It’s different to say our losses in Iraq have been unacceptably high compared to our legitimate national interest in being there; than it is to say they have been “catastrophic.”  But again, this is a distinction the essayist is uninterested in making.

Another indication of both Peters perspective and prejudices is his description of war as:

…Humanity’s most complex, decisive and vital endeavor.

Whatever happened to peace, to negotiations?  Since when is war humanity’s “most vital endeavor?”

More questionable “wisdom” from the general:

…The world in which we do live remains one in which war is the primary means of resolving humanity’s grandest disagreements, as well as supplying the answer to plenty of questions…Warfare is…the organized endeavor at which human beings excel…There is simply nothing that human collectives do better (or with more enthusiasm) than fight each other.

Last I checked Teddy Roosevelt earned a Nobel Prize for STOPPING the Russo-Japanese War, not for starting it.  Ditto, Jimmy Carter and the Camp David Accords in 1979.  I never noticed that George Patton or William Techumseh Sherman earned any Nobels.  Sure, you can say that the Civil War “resolved” the disagreements between the North and the South.  But I’m convinced that if Lincoln had thought there was any other way than war to resolve the dispute, he would gladly have chosen it.  War is not, nor should it be the PRIMARY means of resolving disputes.  There are many other methods of doing so.  It is Peters’ interest as a soldier to posit the thesis he does.  But it is not in our interest as a nation to embrace his views.

For an alleged student of history, Peters seems ignorant of the truth of Gandhi’s non-violent campaign for independence from British rule:

Gandhi’s campaign of non-violence (often quite violent in its reality) only worked because his opponent was willing to play along.

The British were quite violent in their struggle against Gandhi as anyone who saw the movie can tell you.  To say that they “played along” is a gross distortion of the historical record.

Here Peters makes the claim that the west should embrace the notion of a holy religious war between us and Islam:

The problem is religion. Our Islamist enemies are inspired by it, while we are terrified even to talk about it. We are in the unique position of denying that our enemies know what they themselves are up to. They insist, publicly, that their goal is our destruction (or, in their mildest moods, our conversion) in their god’s name. We contort ourselves to insist that their religious rhetoric is all a sham…

Once again Peters misconstrues the true debate.  We are not terrified to talk about Islam or religion in general.  But we refuse to demonize all Muslims and refuse to accept the claim that Islam AS A RELIGION is at war with non-Muslims or the west in general.  We make a distinction, which the general refuses to make, between Islamists and those who worship Islam.

In Peters’ warped evangelical mindset, we preach love of Islam and hatred of our own native religions:

We have so oversold ourselves on the notion of respect for all religions (except, of course, Christianity and Judaism)…

A paralyzing problem “inside the Beltway” is that our ruling class has been educated out of religious fervor. Even officials and bureaucrats who attend a church or synagogue each week no longer comprehend the life-shaking power of revelation, the transformative ecstasy of glimpsing the divine, or the exonerating communalism of living faith. Emotional displays of belief make the functional agnostic or social atheist nervous; he or she reacts with elitist disdain.

If you had any doubt that this fellow stands at the extreme edge of political discourse, this passage should’ve allayed it.  Yet he is a retired general and respected analyst featured by the war-mongering pro-Israel JINSA.  What does that tell you about this crowd?

Here’s another passage exemplifying not only of ignorance of Islam, but outright racism:

…Islam’s long descent into cultural darkness and civilizational impotence…

Islam today is composed of over a billion essentially powerless human beings, many of them humiliated and furiously jealous…

The failures of the Middle Eastern Islamic world are self-wrought, the disastrous results of the deterioration of a once-triumphant faith into a web of static cultures obsessed with behavior at the expense of achievement. The core world of Islam, stretching from Casablanca to the Hindu Kush, is not competitive in a single significant sphere of human endeavor (not even terrorism since, at present, we are terrorizing the terrorists). We are confronted with a historical anomaly, the public collapse of a once-great, still-proud civilization that, in the age of super-computers, cannot build a reliable automobile: enormous wealth has been squandered; human capital goes wasted; economies are dysfunctional; and the quality of life is barbaric. Those who once cowered at Islam’s greatness now rule the world. The roughly one-fifth of humanity that makes up the Muslim world lacks a single world-class university of its own. The resultant rage is immeasurable; jealousy may be the greatest unacknowledged strategic factor in the world today.

Here is more bogus historiography:

…(the myth that insurgents of any kind usually win has no historical basis)…

And more hysterics:

…The age-old lesson of religion-fueled rebellions is that they must be put down with unsparing bloodshed—the fanatic’s god is not interested in compromise solutions. The leading rebels or terrorists must be killed. We, on the contrary, want to make them our friends.

Doubtless the Israeli generals who perpetrated the Gaza massacre were in touch with Gen. Peters in formulating their rules of engagement:

When the United States…decides to go to war—it must intend to win. That means…we need to bring every possible resource to bear from the outset—an approach that saves blood and treasure in the long run. And we must stop obsessing about our minor sins. Warfare will never be clean, soldiers will always make mistakes, and rounds will always go astray, despite our conscientious safeguards and best intentions. Instead of agonizing over a fatal mistake made by a young Marine at a roadblock, we must return to the fundamental recognition that the greatest “war crime” the United States can commit is to lose.

Yes.  Forget about human rights, constitutional safeguards.  All those little niceties of democracy that only get in the way.  Kill many and kill often for that will bring victory.  And victory is all that matters.  You’ll have to forgive me for believing there are a few other principles more important than victory like morality, civilization.

Martin Luther King was willing to die for his cause.  Should he have preferred to hire hit squads to assassinate every American who stood in his way to attain “victory?”

Believe it or not the following subject is, if anything, more disturbing than the ones I’ve covered here so far.  Peters is a devout enemy of the media.  He calls the final section of his essay, Killers Without Guns, and have no doubt he’s talking about the entire Fourth Estate, an entity whose protection is inscribed into constitution and law.  Yet would Peters have his way, we would entirely exterminate the press.  This is frightening stuff:

There will always be a hostile third party in the fight, but one which we not only refrain from attacking…: the media. While this brief essay cannot undertake to analyze the psychological dysfunctions that lead many among the most privileged Westerners to attack their own civilization and those who defend it, we can acknowledge the overwhelming evidence that, to most media practitioners, our troops are always guilty (even if proven innocent), while our barbaric enemies are innocent (even if proven guilty). The phenomenon of Western and world journalists championing the “rights” and causes of blood-drenched butchers who, given the opportunity, would torture and slaughter them, disproves the notion—were any additional proof required—that human beings are rational creatures.

…The neo-pagans who dominate the media serve as lackeys at the terrorists’ bloody altar.

Considering that this guy appears to be an intelligent individual with some expertise in military strategy, the following indicates he’s completely at sea as far as understanding what really happened in Lebanon 2006 and Gaza 2008:

While journalists and editors ultimately failed to defeat the U.S. government in Iraq, video cameras and biased reporting guaranteed that Hezbollah would survive the 2006 war with Israel and, as of this writing, they appear to have saved Hamas from destruction in Gaza.

In fact, Israel could not win either war.  The first war it clearly lost, the second it failed to achieve its objectives, which is the same as losing.  Now, if Israel had been willing to wage a war like the Romans did on Carthage and exile every inhabitant of south Lebanon and Gaza, raze every building to its foundation, and sow salt in the ground so it would never produce another living thing, then perhaps it COULD win.  That is possibly the kind of victory Peters wants.  But he’s living in the wrong era if he thinks such an atrocity is possible in this age.

Here Peters advocates outright criminality in my opinion, overt military attacks on the media:

…Future wars may require censorship, news blackouts and, ultimately, military attacks on the partisan media. Perceiving themselves as superior beings, journalists have positioned themselves as protected-species combatants. But freedom of the press stops when its abuse kills our soldiers and strengthens our enemies. Such a view arouses disdain today, but a media establishment that has forgotten any sense of sober patriotism may find that it has become tomorrow’s conventional wisdom.

In my opinion, any media outlet that interviews this man or pays him a red cent in consulting fees is doing the deepest disservice to itself and the entire profession of journalism.  Even Fox News, where this guy is most comfortable, should shun him.  He’s advocating killing journalists!  This man is the lowest of the low.  And as for JINSA, whose journal features this essay–by spewing such hate they tell us a great deal about their own hateful, anti-democratic views.

To top it all off, Peters closes his essay with this piece of horrific, self-justifying logic:

The point of all this is simple: Win. In warfare, nothing else matters. If you cannot win clean, win dirty. But win. Our victories are ultimately in humanity’s interests, while our failures nourish monsters.

He hasn’t the faintest notions that it is possible that our victory, if we win dirty and betray every principle of value, will turn us into monsters.  Then we won’t really need an enemy.  We will have become out own worst enemy.

Dore Gold’s Jerusalem Center: ‘Iranian ICBMs Could Rain Down on NYC!’

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

You remember when Hillary Clinton claimed there was a vast right-wing conspiracy out to get her husband when he was president. Well, one of the subthemes of this blog is documenting a vast pro-Israel right-wing conspiracy to advance what they perceive as Israel’s interests, which aren’t Israel’s (true) interests and certainly aren’t U.S. interests.

Iranian ICBM reaches NYC! Dore Gold says: "You can take it to the bank!"

Iranian ICBM reaches NYC! Dore Gold says: "You can take it to the bank!"

Today, I’m going to cover two of these Jewish neocon outfits and their bellicose panting after war with Iran and other members of the Arab/Muslim world. Thanks to Phil Weiss for pointing to Dore Gold’s Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, which features this unintentionally humorous (if it weren’t so frightening) graphic at its site. One of the “cool” features is that you can select your missile of choice and discover how much of the world the Iranians can devastate if the west allows that nation to get “the bomb.”

Of course, the Iranians do not have an ICBM to carry such a warhead.  Nor do they have a nuclear weapon.  But these are mere technicalities when it comes to frightening the world into adopting the Israeli government’s priorities and interests.

Those who follow this blog will remember a similar map in Aipac’s glossy brochure produced for its national policy conference last month.  I have this vision of one computer designer sitting in front of his screen designing all the maps for all the pro-Israel groups featuring various threats that Iran poses to the world.  Of course, he’d have so many clients he wouldn’t know what to do with all the work: Aipac, Jerusalem Center, JINSA, WINEP, ZOA, Conference of Presidents, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Israel Project, to mention just a few.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly seeks out diverse politial debate

Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly seeks out diverse political debate

Speaking of the foreign ministry, on my site stats I’ve noticed a few visits to this site over the past few weeks from the Ministry in Israel and wanted to welcome all those new readers of this blog.  I presume they honestly come to educate themselves about the diversity of political expression among the Jewish blogworld on the Israeli-Arab issue.

Haaretz reports that Iran has just tested a missile with a 1,200 mile range.  Well, that seals it.  War is all but guaranteed, right?  Not so fast:

Some analysts saw the timing of the launch of the Sejil 2 missile – a more accurate, solid-fuel version of an existing missile that is capable of reaching Israel, US bases in the Mideast, and parts of Europe – as more worrisome than the technology on display.

“Certainly the timing is significant and conveys a message of defiance,” said Steven Aftergood, senior research analyst at the Federation of American Scientists. “It’s a bit early to say whether the launch reflects a significant technological advance or not.”

…Ahmad Sadri, a professor at Lake Forest College in Illinois and a frequent contributor to a liberal newspaper in Iran, said “…[The missile test] is not directed at the United States. It is for domestic consumption.”

Mark Gasiorowski , professor of political science at Louisiana State University who has taught and done research at the University of Tehran, said Iran routinely organizes parades and launches to publicize their missiles and stoke nationalist feelings inside the country. But he said that such displays do not mean that Iran won’t eventually decide to normalize relations with the United States and compromise on its nuclear ambitions.

“All of this is meant to show the world – and Iranians – that Iran is strong,” he said. “This is not going to affect steps on both sides toward rapprochement.”

There is a difference between being prudent, careful, and watchful regarding Iran’s actions; and lobbying strenuously for all-out war, which is the barely concealed policy of the pro-Israel camp.

Museum of In-Tolerance Screens Muslim-Hating Film, Third Jihad

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

3rd-jihad-banner

Los Angeles’ Museum of In-Tolerance, named in honor of Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal, is now steeped in Muslim hatred. Rabbi Marvin Hier, its current leader, has endorsed the Iran yellow star hoax. Now, he’s actively promoting one of the most Islamophobic films ever produced, Third Jihad.

The Clarion Fund is listed as the sponsor of the film, though its creators (including Rabbi Raphael Shore) are affiliated with the pro-settler Aish Hatorah, a group based in Israel.  Clarion appears to be little more than a domestic shell organization designed to enable the producers to claim the film was made in the U.S.

Third Jihad features Zuhdi Jasser, who though he professes to be Muslim, seems to detest almost everything about his religion, especially anything that remotely hints of Islam existing in a political context.  Jasser runs a one man Muslim organization which is characterized in an IPS story thus:

American Islamic Forum for Democracy…according to its website, is a non-profit which seeks to “intellectually stand against the religious fanatics who exploit the religion of Islam for a nihilistic, anti-American anti-Western war.”

Jasser makes common cause with Muslim haters like Daniel Pipes and other Jewish neocons.  Years ago, he was active in CAIR but that relationship turned sour.  Now he detests everything to do with the national Muslim organization and takes every chance he can to attack it.  Third Jihad provides him all the opportunity he needs.

In the film, he purports to have discovered a radical Muslim version of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion:

“The Third Jihad” is largely based on a document the producers say the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) discovered in 2003. The film’s creators purport the document is a “’Grand Jihad Manifesto’ authored by the Muslim Brotherhood in North America, according to the promotional materials.

“The 15-page document outlines goals and strategies for the infiltration and domination of America from within,” says the release. “Among the strategies discussed is the establishment of ‘moderate’ groups, mosques and Islamic centers across North America in an effort to strategically position Islam so that it might weaken western culture and promote the implementation of Sharia Law.”

CAIR wrote a letter of protest to Rabbi Hier about the profound insult that this film poses to all American Muslims.  But Hier has about as much sensitivity to the concerns of Muslims as a deaf person would have to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

The Wiesenthal Center screenings were co-sponsored by another extremist group, the American Freedom Alliance.  One look at its website makes you realize you’re visiting territory so far off the right side of the universe it might as well be Pluto.  Here’s but a taste:

The American Freedom Alliance is a non-political, non partisan, movement of concerned Americans which identifies threats to western civilization. The organization promotes networking, activism and education in the following six areas:

* The Islamic penetration of Europe
* The collapse of academic freedom
* The identification and sources of media bias
* The growth of radical environmentalism
* The necessity for missile defense
* The dangers presented by the global governance movement

IPS notes that the Washington, D.C. screening of the film was promoted and documented by the International Free Press Society, which also heavily publicized the U.S. speaking tour of far-right Dutch Muslim hater, Geert Wilders.  He himself produced an anti-Muslim film screed, Fitna, which I jokingly called here “Dutch for garbage.”  Even the ADL has labelled Wilders “inflammatory” and Britain has refused him entry.  Both Wilders and some members of IFPS have been linked to the Belgian neo-fascist group, Vlaams Belang.

All in all, this is a nice set of bedfellows with whom the Clarion Fund and the Museum of Tolerance are sleeping.  But Rabbi Hier and Raphael Shore should remember what happens when you lie down with dogs…

I find it sad to report that just as Wilders spoke to synagogue audiences during his tour here, Detroit’s Temple Israel also screened Third Jihad.  Someone should ask Rabbi Joshua Bennett what he was thinking when he invited these hatemongers into his shul.

The brutal truth of the matter is that instead of awakening the world to the danger of radical Islam, films like this actually promote Islamophobia and are conducive to an atmosphere that provokes violence against American Muslims.

H/t to Aziz Poonawalla.

Pro-Settler Website Features Schumer, Yet He Claims He Won’t Speak at Their Rally

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

If Chuck Schumer isn't speaking at this event, why does its website feature him?

If Chuck Schumer isn't speaking at this event, why does its website feature him?

A source reports that Chuck Schumer will not speak at the Israel Independence Day pro-settler concert as was reported earlier here.  A glossy poster advertising the concert features Schumer’s name prominently and lists him as a speaker.  The senator was approached to participate in the main community rally, but never approached about speaking to the settlers.  Apparently, the concert organizers were only too willing to appropriate Schumer’s name for their cause.

But one has to ask why no one on Schumer’s staff noticed that the concert website features his smiling visage appearing to endorse the pro-settler hate that will be spewed at this event sponsored by the Hebron Fund, Ateret Cohanim and Arutz Sheva (settler radio).  And now that his people know (or will know shortly) will they insist his image be removed?

Other New York Democratic political leaders featured as speakers are Anthony Weiner, Dov Hikind, and Sheldon Silver.  I know for a fact that these are Dov’s kind of people.  But aren’t Silver and Weiner the least bit embarrassed about consorting with Jewish pogromists?

Woodside Colludes With Jobs to Destroy Jackling House

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009
Jackling House

Jackling House

Recently, the town of Woodside, CA. voted 6-1 to allow Steve Jobs to tear down the historic Jackling House.  Previously, the State Superior Court and Court of Appeals had overturned an earlier Town ruling permitting the demolition on the grounds that this violated state law which called for preservation of culturally significant buildings.  Despite these losses and no change in the evidence or arguments presented, Jobs returned to the Town and asked for them to reapprove his plan.  They obediently did so.

The arguments presented by Town board members showed just how little they understood the law, which clearly states that the California Environmental Quality Act not only intrinsically values the House, but prohibits its destruction.  It is sad to note that the Town’s elected officials not only don’t do their homework, they really could care less:

“I didn’t see any reason to try to restore or maintain this house,” he [council member Dave Tanner] said of the Jackling House.

Tanner cited the structure’s enormous size, associated heating and energy costs, as well as the town’s stated preference for smaller homes on large lots as reasons restoration don’t make sense.

Clearly, the state courts will once again stop Jobs and the Town in their tracks.  But this doesn’t bother Jobs who is used to getting his way in life since he is a virtual Master of the Universe.

A representative of the National Trust for Historic Places called Jackling House “”one of California’s masterpieces.” The Trust’s blog featured this post on the story. It was designed by George Washington Smith, who was responsible for Santa Barbara’s Spanish revival masterpieces including the Biltmore Hotel and art museum.

Montana State University history professor Timothy LeCain noted in a letter to the Town, the irony in their decision to destroy the historic home of the great American copper baron, Daniel Jackling:

Daniel Jackling “wired” America. The copper from his mine…has been strung over thousands of miles of power lines, threaded into the walls of millions of homes, and built into countless electric devices from toasters and autos to cell phones and computers. There, of course, lies the sharp irony of our dangerously forgetful age. That Steven Jobs–a man whose entire career has been built on devices that are essentially useless absent our copper-based electric power grid–proposes to tear-down the home of the very man whose own innovations made that electric grid possible, strikes me as a particularly egregious case of historical ingratitude and amnesia.

In an analogy that is especially pertinent to my home here in Seattle, LeCain notes that this would be like William Boeing buying and destroying Wilbur and Orville Wright’s birthplace. Would we accept such architectural vandalism?

Another dark irony is that one of the arguments Jobs and his supporters use to justify tearing down the house is that it is a dilapidated wreck.  A commenter here proudly linked to images taken by a photograher who broke into the house as if to say: “You see what kind of mess you want to preserve?”  They neglect to mention that the current owner, Steve Jobs, is responsible for the boarded up hulk Jackling House has become.  There is no provision in state law saying an owner should be shown special consideration for neglecting his property.

Interestingly, the Town has hired as its special counsel in this matter, Anna Shimko of Cassidy, Shimko, Dawson & Kawakami, has another important client (pdf).  Are you ready?  Pixar.  That’s right.  Steve Jobs’ company is represented by a lawyer also working for the Town.  Do I hear conflict of interest anyone?  If I were a resident of Woodside I’d be yelling my head off: how are the Town’s interests represented fairly and objectively when the attorney representing them has Steve Jobs interests at heart?  And I can tell you that Pixar represents a far more important client to her law firm than Woodside does.  So who’s interests will she have at heart?  Or are the interests of the Town and Steve Jobs indistinguishable?

WANTED: IDF Murderer of Bilin Protester

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009
The face of a murderer and his victim

The face of a murderer and his victim (Javier Martinez)

A few weeks ago I covered here the murder of Bassem Ibrahim Abu-Rahma by IDF forces at the weekly Friday protest at the Separation Wall in Bilin.  Abu-Rahma, as is seen on extensive video footage of his killing, is unarmed and doing nothing other than shouting for the IDF to stop firing on peaceful, unarmed protestors.  For his trouble, the thug pictured here nailed him with a high velocity tear gas canister which essentially pulverized his chest, causing massive bleeding and death.

I was astonished that Palestinian peace activists had been able to isolate from the video such a clear and ominous image of the murderer as he was about to fire the lethal volley.  Israel’s war against the Palestinians is usually nameless and faceless since the IDF bombs targets from the air or fires from a distance.  But here is the face of an Israeli about to kill in cold blood.  This is the Occupation.  This is its face.  This is its name.

If any Israeli sees this image and can identify who it is, and is willing to pass this information along to those who would like such people not to enjoy impunity for such actions, please contact me.

May we ask what “progress” the IDF is making in investigating this crime?  The “most moral army in the world” should certainly by now have the soldier brought up on charges since even the IDF acknowledges the firing was “unauthorized.”
