Ya Gotta Love That Google Algorithm

careers in anti-terrorism

We’ve all heard about that vaunted Google Algorithm, something like McDonald’s secret sauce. Well, the algorithm sometimes fails as it did in this instance in which Google Adsense generated this ad in my sidebar. Somehow, I don’t think many of my readers are seeking careers in anti-terrorism.

What’s wrong with “anti-terrorism”. Aren’t the “anti-terrorists” keeping you alive?

“Those who would surrender essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” - Benjamin Franklin

If “anti-terrorism” is used to attack American freedoms (as has been the case since 9/11) and create a police state, then everything is wrong with it.

That’s absolutely right, Andy. Imjudy lives in the Israeli national security state & sees no need for such personal freedoms unless they’re the freedom to live in the Occupied Territories in settlements created out of Palestinian land. Those freedoms are sacrosanct to her.

“Anti-terrorism” is like “anti-Communism” “defending civilization” used be: an excuse to do all the nasty things one would otherwise be ashamed to do.

It’s worth noting that Google also enables site-specific targeting using cost-per-thousand-impressions, so maybe someone has just decided to target you specifically :P

More likely, of course, is that the ad only targeted the word “terrorism” or something else inadequate to determine the behavioral tendencies of their targets. Keywords only go so far in determining relevance of a particular ad…
