I'd like to send a vote of confidence to Mary McCarthy, who is no kin that I know of. (My Great Grandmother Mary McCarthy emigrated in 1852 from Cork County Ireland). I am proud that this Mary McCarthy has risked her job and retirement to do the right thiing. The current administration is guilty of many things illegal including lying to justify starting a was in Iraq. Torturing prisoners is illegal in the US so our Defence Dept. and Bush authorize shipment of prisoners to foreign countries where the can be tortured secretly. Hooray for Mary McCarthy! President Bush and Dick Cheney should be impeached as soon as a Democratic House of Representatives is elected to vote for impeachment. Elect Mary McCarthy to Congress to help. Thanks from Bonnie McCarthy (Drumm).

As always, Dan, thanks for the most interesting link to Larry Johnson's blog. I've heard of him & perhaps seen him on TV but didn't know about his blog. He has a fascinating personal take on this story which people should read.

And, not surprisingly, there's more to this than meets the eye. As former CIA Analyst Larry Johnson blogs http://noquarter.typepad.com/my_weblog/2006/04/the_firing_of_m.html#more McCarty was never in Operations at the CIA and at the time was working in the Inspector General's office - so the only reason she would have had access to this information would be if there was an investigation related to a complaint filed internally by someone at the CIA...

I've never understood why American newspapers did not cite sources in foriegn intelligence services. If the CIA had not leaked the information on the prisons, then the only people who would know of such things would be other intelligence services and people who can read non-English newspapers.

You may recall that the Iran-Contra story didn't break in the USA media first. It was an Israeli publication that broke the news. Actually, the late Joseph Kraft reported a scandal to rival Watergate in an August 1985 column, over a year before the story broke. So there was knowledge circulating out of print for more than a year before the public learned of it. Isn't it always true that the readers are the last to know?
