Tom Douglas’ Ice Cream Sandwiches Are Back!

I’ve mourned over the last two years since Tom Douglas discontinued his summer ice cream sandwiches. They were out of this world delicious. He made them using his chocolate chip cookies as the wafers and filled them with a slab of vanilla or (too rarely) chocolate ice cream. When the Bakery stopped offering them I practically got down on bended knee and begged to bring them back. They told me that the item was just too time-consuming. Well, it turns out they now have a new pastry chef and I guess this dude thinks ice cream sandwiches are cool.

Today, when I stopped in with my son I saw them again on the board and my delight knew no bounds. I also noticed on the bakery’s wall a blurb about the sandwiches from Tom’s Fish for the 4th article in this month’s Bon Appetit. Unfortunately, the magazine features none of its current articles on its site, so I can’t display the wonderful picture that accompanied the blurb. Maybe a little later I’ll go take a picture of one of the morsels from my freezer with my digital and we’ll see how it comes out. If anyone has a digital version of the article or the blurb about the ice cream sandwiches, please let me know.

Lamentably, Dahlia will only carry them for the month of July. So you have only 13 more days to hightail it over there and enjoy THE taste delight of a Seattle summer.

In a Google search, I discovered that Tom’s former executive pastry chef, Toby Matasar has opened a new West Seattle restaurant, Eats Market Cafe which features–you guessed it…those wonderful ice cream sandwiches (they’re $5.50 here though–and I would imagine larger–and $3.50 at Dahlia). Perhaps these will be more like the ones I remember from the Bakery in years past.

For two years or so there was a woman from West Seattle selling ice cream sandwiches at the Columbia City Farmer’s Market. They were to die for delicious. I’d dearly love to see someone selling them again at a few of the Markets.
